Primordial black hole formation in bulk-viscous cosmology

We investigate primordial black hole (PBH) formation in a cosmological background with bulk viscosity. Using numerical simulations, we determine the collapse threshold and the resulting PBH mass. We find that the critical threshold $μ_c$ retains a dependence on the equation-of-state parameter $w$ similar to that in the inviscid case, but is enhanced by an amount comparable to the bulk-viscosity strength $ε$. For fixed $w$, the increase in $μ_c$ is approximately linear in $ε$. By fitting the standard critical-scaling law for near-threshold collapse, we find that the bulk viscosity leads to an enhancement in the resulting PBH mass. These results indicate that bulk viscosity can systematically modify both the PBH threshold and PBH mass scaling law in the early universe.

Primordial Black Hole Abundances and Scalar Induced Gravitational Waves from Finite-Width Power Spectra in a Stiff Thermal History

We study the formation of primordial black holes (PBHs) from large primordial perturbations that re-enter the horizon during an epoch with equation of state ${\rm w}\geq1/3$. We consider a log-normal curvature power spectrum of finite width $Δ$ and determine the collapse amplitude by numerical-relativity simulations of a self-gravitating perfect fluid. Threshold scans are performed for five values of $\rm w$ and five spectral widths, and the resulting numerical thresholds are used in the PBH abundance and scalar-induced gravitational-wave (SIGW) calculations. For comparison, we also evaluate the semi-analytical $q$-function prescription. It reproduces the numerical trend close to radiation domination and for nearly monochromatic profiles, but it is not a reliable threshold estimator for generic finite-width profiles in stiffer backgrounds. We show how collapse thresholds increase with both $Δ$ and $\rm w$, changing the curvature amplitude required for PBHs to constitute all of the dark matter and, consequently, the normalization of the accompanying SIGW signal.

Primordial black holes forming during kination: the trapped, the overdense, and the void

We study primordial black-hole (PBH) formation in a single-field model which passes from slow roll, through a transient ultra-slow-roll phase, into kination. Nonlinear numerical-relativity simulations are used to follow localised, initially sub-Hubble field fluctuations across the non-attractor transition, to determine the resulting super-Hubble curvature profiles, and subsequently to evolve their re-entry during kination. Within the set of initial configurations explored here, we find three qualitatively distinct outcomes, namely a patch which remains trapped in inflation, a positive-curvature overdensity, and a negative-curvature void bounded by an overdense shell. Each may form a PBH, although by a different physical mechanism. For one selected profile in each of the overdense and void channels, we measure collapse thresholds and compare them with thresholds for sinc profiles. The comparison shows that neither the central curvature nor the peak linear compaction alone provides a profile- or channel-independent collapse criterion. PBH abundances in non-attractor models must therefore be formulated in terms of the distribution of complete profiles, with the trapped, overdense, and void channels treated separately.

Primordial Black Holes from Primordial Voids

Primordial black holes (PBHs) are a compelling dark matter candidate and a unique probe of small-scale cosmological fluctuations. Their formation is usually attributed to large positive curvature perturbations, which collapse upon Hubble re-entry during radiation domination. In this work we investigate instead the role of negative curvature perturbations, corresponding to the growth of primordial void (PV) like regions. Using numerical relativity simulations, we show that sufficiently deep PV can undergo a nonlinear rebounce at the center, generating an effective overdensity that eventually collapses into a PBH. We determine the critical threshold for this process for a variety of equations of state, and demonstrate that the resulting black holes obey a scaling relation analogous to the standard overdensity case. These results establish primordial voids as a novel channel for PBH formation and highlight their potential impact on PBH abundances and cosmological signatures.

Scalar Induced Gravitational Waves signaling Primordial Black Hole Dark Matter

Primordial black holes are a unique probe of the early Universe and offer a potential link between inflationary dynamics and dark matter. In a recent work \cite{Inui:2024fgk}, we analyse PBH formation and the associated stochastic gravitational wave background from scalar induced gravitational waves, while taking into account the contributions from local non-Gaussianities. We highlight the observable consequences for the LISA and PTA experiments.

Bubbles kick off primordial black holes to form more binaries

Primordial black holes (PBHs) may form before cosmological first-order phase transitions, leading to inevitable collisions between PBHs and bubble walls. In this Letter, we have simulated for the first time the co-evolution of an expanding scalar wall passing through a black hole with full numerical relativity. This black hole-bubble wall collision yields multiple far-reaching phenomena, including the PBH mass growth, gravitational wave radiations, and momentum recoil that endows PBHs with additional velocities, approximately doubling the formation rate for PBH binaries and hence strengthening the observational constraints on the PBH abundances.

Primordial black holes and induced gravitational waves from logarithmic non-Gaussianity

We investigate the formation of primordial black hole (PBH) based on numerical relativity simulations and peak theory as well as the corresponding scalar induced gravitational wave (SIGW) signals in the presence of \emph{logarithmic non-Gaussianities} which has recently been confirmed in a wide class of inflation models. Through numerical calculations, we find certain parameter spaces of the critical thresholds for the type A PBH formation and reveal a maximum critical threshold value. We also find that there is a region where no PBH is produced from type II fluctuations contrary to a previous study. We then confirm that SIGW signals originated from the logarithmic non-Gaussianity are detectable in the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna if PBHs account for whole dark matter. Finally, we discuss the SIGW interpretation of the nHz stochastic gravitational wave background reported by the recent pulsar timing array observations. We find that PBH overproduction is a serious problem for most of the parameter space, while this tension might still be alleviated in the non-perturbative regime.

Were you born in an aborted primordial black hole?

We propose a mechanism of electroweak baryogenesis based on the Standard Model and explaining the coincidence between the baryon and Dark Matter (DM) densities. Large curvature fluctuations slightly below the threshold for Primordial Black Hole (PBH) formation locally reheat the plasma above the sphaleron barrier when they collapse gravitationally, leading to regions with a maximal baryogenesis at the Quantum Chromodynamics epoch. Using numerical relativity simulations, we calculate the overdensity threshold for baryogenesis. If PBH significantly contribute to the DM, aborted PBHs can generate a baryon density and an averaged baryon-to-photon ratio consistent with observations.

Beginning inflation in conformally curved spacetimes

We investigate the initiation of cosmic inflation, in full numerical relativity, from pre-inflationary scenarios with large tensor and vector fluctuations in the metric. These settings are characterized by having large values in the Weyl curvature tensor. In the matter sector, we consider a single scalar field with inhomogeneous field velocities, corresponding to a kination period. In the context of large-field inflation, it is shown that the onset of inflation continues to be robust to this type of initial conditions, and that during inflation the Universe successfully homogenizes and flattens any type of curvature, leading to a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker Universe after just a few tens of efolds of accelerating expansion.

Primordial black holes and their gravitational-wave signatures

In the recent years, primordial black holes (PBHs) have emerged as one of the most interesting and hotly debated topics in cosmology. Among other possibilities, PBHs could explain both some of the signals from binary black hole mergers observed in gravitational wave detectors and an important component of the dark matter in the Universe. Significant progress has been achieved both on the theory side and from the point of view of observations, including new models and more accurate calculations of PBH formation, evolution, clustering, merger rates, as well as new astrophysical and cosmological probes. In this work, we review, analyse and combine the latest developments in order to perform end-to-end calculations of the various gravitational wave signatures of PBHs. Different ways to distinguish PBHs from stellar black holes are emphasized. Finally, we discuss their detectability with LISA, the first planned gravitational-wave observatory in space.

Cosmic inhomogeneities in the early Universe: A numerical relativity approach

Cosmic inflation is arguably the most favoured paradigm of the very early Universe. It postulates an early phase of fast, nearly exponential, and accelerated expansion. Inflationary models are capable of explaining the overall flatness and homogeneity of today's Universe at large scales. Despite being widely accepted by the physics community, these models are not absent from criticism. In scalar field inflation, a necessary condition to begin inflation is the requirement of a Universe dominated by the field's potential, which implies a subdominant contribution from the scalar field dynamics. This has originated to large amounts of scientific debate and literature on the naturalness, and possible fine-tuning of the initial conditions for inflation. Another controversial issue concerns the end of inflation, and the fact that a preheating mechanism is necessary to originate the hot big bang plasma after inflation. In this thesis, we present full general relativistic simulations to study these two problems, with a particular focus on the Starobinsky and Higgs models of inflation. First, we consider the fine-tuning problem of beginning inflation from a highly dynamical and inhomogeneous "preinflation" epoch in the single-field case. In our second study, we approach the multifield paradigm of preinflation, together and consistently, with the preheating phase. These investigations confirm the robustness of these inflationary models to generic initial conditions, while putting in evidence the non-negligible gravitational effects during preheating. At the end of the manuscript, we discuss potential applications of numerical simulations in cosmology, including our preliminary investigations on primordial black hole formation.

Gravitational dynamics in Higgs inflation: Preinflation and preheating with an auxiliary field

The dynamics of both the preinflationary and the preheating epochs for a model consisting of a Higgs inflaton plus an additional auxiliary field are studied in full General Relativity. The minimally coupled auxiliary field allows for parametric-type resonances that successfully transfer energy from the inflaton condensate to particle excitations in both fields. Depending on the interaction strengths of the fields, the broad resonance periods lead to structure formation consisting of large under/over-densities, and possibly the formation of compact objects. Moreover, when confronting the same model to multi-field inhomogeneous preinflation, the onset of inflation is shown to be a robust outcome. At relatively large Higgs values, the non-minimal coupling acts as a stabilizer, protecting the dynamics of the inflaton, and significantly reducing the impact of perturbations in other fields and matter sectors. These investigations further confirm the robustness of Higgs inflation to multi-field inhomogeneous initial conditions, while putting in evidence the formation of complex structures during the reheating.

Cosmology with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has two scientific objectives of cosmological focus: to probe the expansion rate of the universe, and to understand stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds and their implications for early universe and particle physics, from the MeV to the Planck scale. However, the range of potential cosmological applications of gravitational wave observations extends well beyond these two objectives. This publication presents a summary of the state of the art in LISA cosmology, theory and methods, and identifies new opportunities to use gravitational wave observations by LISA to probe the universe.

Inhomogeneous initial conditions for inflation: A wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey path to salvation

We use the 3+1 formalism of numerical relativity to investigate the robustness of Starobinsky and Higgs inflation to inhomogeneous initial conditions, in the form of either field gradient or kinetic energy density. Sub-Hubble and Hubble-sized fluctuations generically lead to inflation after an oscillatory phase between gradient and kinetic energies. Hubble-sized inhomogeneities also produce contracting regions that may end up forming primordial black holes, subsequently diluted by inflation. We analyse the dynamics of the preinflation era and the generation of vector and tensor fluctuations. Our analysis further supports the robustness of inflation to any size of inhomogeneity, in the field, velocity or equation of state. At large field values, the preinflation dynamics only marginally depends on the field potential and it is expected that such behaviour is universal and applies to any inflation potential of plateau-type, favoured by CMB observations after Planck.

Steady-state generation of negative-Wigner-function light using feedback

We propose a method of producing steady-state coherent light with negative Wigner functions in nonlinear media combined with feedback control. While the nonlinearities are essential to produce the Wigner negativities, this alone is insufficient to stabilize steady-state light with negativities. Using feedback control to control the phase in the cavity, we find that this produces significant total negativities for reasonable experimental parameters. The negative Wigner function is produced continuously and does not appear to be restricted to low-amplitude light. The technique is applicable to systems such as exciton-polaritons, where strong natural nonlinearities are present.
