Heat Capacity Anomalies and Thermal Crossovers in Finite Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Chains

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of finite Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains in thermal equilibrium at fixed temperature and chemical potential. Using the canonical and grand canonical ensembles, we calculate the energy density, particle number density, entropy, and heat capacity as functions of temperature, chemical potential, and hopping asymmetry. Our analysis reveals a double-peak anomaly in the heat capacity for non-dimerized configurations, in which two maxima are separated by a local minimum. We identify this feature as a Schottky-type thermal crossover governed by two distinct energy scales. The anomaly is most pronounced when the chemical potential is comparable to the band scale, and its two maxima separate further as the hopping asymmetry increases and the chain length grows, reflecting the widening gap between the two energy scales and the increasing density of states. We demonstrate that while the topological properties are determined by boundary states, the bulk thermodynamic behavior exhibits a rich crossover structure that can be tuned through the hopping parameter ratio. These findings provide insights into the interplay between topology, finite-size effects, and thermal fluctuations in one-dimensional topological systems, with potential implications for experimental realizations in cold atoms, photonic systems, and topoelectrical circuits.

Chiral symmetry breaking in models with unconventional supersymmetry

We investigate dynamical mass generation in a geometrically constructed gauge theory based on the super Lie algebra $su(2,2|3)$, in which gravity, Yang-Mills fields, and fermions are unified as components of a single gauge connection. The model contains no elementary scalar fields and no ad hoc four-fermion interactions. Instead, fermionic self-interactions arise unavoidably from the geometric structure of the theory, through nonminimal couplings and torsion associated with the unified connection. Upon reduction to an effective low-energy description, these interactions generate a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio--type potential that triggers chiral symmetry breaking and the formation of a fermion mass gap. In this framework, mass generation emerges as a direct consequence of the underlying gauge-geometric and algebraic structure, rather than as an independent dynamical assumption.

Magnetic field induced anomalous pion couplings

Effective pion-constituent quark couplings induced by relatively weak magnetic fields are calculated in the framework based in Weinberg's large Nc Effective Field Theory. These couplings (form factors) vanish in the vacuum. In particular, single-pion couplings to a scalar and a vector constituent quark currents are investigated. These couplings might correspond to a fluctuation of the neutral pion into a scalar quark-antiquark state (meson) and to a vector meson, respectively. Some possible phenomenological implications are discussed.

Electric current from Schwinger's time-ordered propagator

The quasistatic electric current density of fermions in the presence of an external electric field is determined through the utilization of a time-ordered Schwinger propagator. The study encompasses the necessary conditions for establishing a well-defined time-ordered propagator within the Schwinger formalism, specifically concentrating on constant and uniform electromagnetic fields. Within this theoretical framework, a chemical potential is introduced, resulting in non-zero values for the electric current and charge number density. Consequently, the dependence of electric conductivity on the strength of the electric field and the charge number density is investigated.

Finite-energy sum rules at finite chemical potential and zero temperature

In this article we explore the effect of chemical potential at zero temperature in the implementation of in-medium effects in the perturbative sector in finite energy sum rules. For this purpose, we explore the axial, axial-pseudoscalar and pseudoscalar current correlators involving charged pions. The inclusion of non-normal ordered condensates with chemical potential effects in the operator mixing is considered. As a result, the contribution of the operator mixing with chemical potential dependence cancels all the explicit chemical potential contribution of the perturbative sector, aligned with the so-called "silver blaze problem". We find an abrupt transition when $μ=\sqrt{s_0}/2$, with $s_0$ representing the hadronic continuum threshold. Exploring beyond this critical chemical potential we found similarities with low-energy effective meson models at high chemical potential.

Strongly interacting matter in extreme magnetic fields

Magnetic fields are ubiquitous across different physical systems of current interest; from the early Universe, compact astrophysical objects and heavy-ion collisions to condensed matter systems. A proper treatment of the effects produced by magnetic fields during the dynamical evolution of these systems, can help to understand observables that otherwise show a puzzling behavior. Furthermore, when these fields are comparable to or stronger than Λ_QCD, they serve as excellent probes to help elucidate the physics of strongly interacting matter under extreme conditions of temperature and density. In this work we provide a comprehensive review of recent developments on the description of QED and QCD systems where magnetic field driven effects are important. These include the modification of meson static properties such as masses and form factors, the chiral magnetic effect, the description of anomalous transport coefficients, superconductivity in extreme magnetic fields, the properties of neutron stars, the evolution of heavy-ion collisions, as well as effects on the QCD phase diagram. We describe recent theory and phenomenological developments using effective models as well as LQCD methods. The work represents a state-of-the-art review of the field, motivated by presentations and discussions during the "Workshop on Strongly Interacting Matter in Strong Electromagnetic Fields" that took place in the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*) in the city of Trento, Italy, September 25-29, 2023.

Quark anomalous magnetic moment in an extreme magnetic background from perturbative QCD

We compute the one-loop QCD correction to the photon-quark-antiquark vertex in an extremely strong magnetic background, i.e., one in which $\sqrt{eB}$ is much larger than all other mass scales. We resort to the lowest-Landau level approximation, and consider on shell fermions. We find that the total magnetic moment is such that the anomalous magnetic moment contributes to the electric part $\sim iE_3σ_3$, the other contributions to $\boldsymbol{B}\cdot\boldsymbolσ$ and $i\boldsymbol{E}\cdot\boldsymbolσ_\perp$ being completely suppressed. We show results for the anomalous magnetic moment of quarks up and down, scaled by their values in the vacuum, as a function of the external magnetic field, considering dressed gluons and a renormalization scale $μ_\mathrm{\tiny \overline{ MS}}=\sqrt{|eB|}$.

Magnetic field dependence of the neutral pion longitudinal screening mass in the linear sigma model with quarks

We use the linear sigma model with quarks to study the magnetic-field-induced modifications on the longitudinal screening mass for the neutral pion at one-loop level. The effects of the magnetic field are introduced into the self-energy, which contains the contributions from all the model particles. We find that, to obtain a reasonable description for the behavior with the field strength, we need to account for the magnetic field dependence of the particle masses. We also find that the couplings need to decrease fast enough with the field strength to then reach constant and smaller values as compared to their vacuum ones. The results illustrate the need to treat the magnetic corrections to the particle masses and couplings in a self-consistent manner, accounting for the backreaction of the field effects for the magnetic field dependence of the rest of the particle species and couplings in the model.

The Yukawa potential under weak magnetic field

Weak magnetic field induced corrections for the Yukawa potential due to one pion exchange between two constituent quarks (nucleons) are presented. For that, the constant magnetic field effect on the pion propagator and on the pion form factor are taken into account. An effective gluon propagator parameterized with an effective gluon mass ($M_g\sim 0.5$\,GeV) is considered. In the limit of magnetic field weak with respect to the constituent quark mass and pion mass, analytical and semi-analytical expressions can be obtained. Different types of contributions are found, isotropic or anisotropic, dependent on the pion mass and also on the constituent quark and effective gluon masses. Overall the corrections are of the order of $2\%$ to $5\%$ of the Yukawa potential at distances close to $2$fm, and they decrease slower than the Yukawa potential. The anistropic corrections are considerably smaller than the isotropic components. A sizable splitting between results due to magnetic field dependent neutral or charged pion mass is found.

Nucleon axial-vector coupling constant in magnetar environments

The nucleon axial-vector coupling constant $g_A$ is studied in the presence of an external magnetic field, and in dense nuclear environments, to emulate nuclear matter in magnetars. For this purpose we use QCD finite energy sum rules for two-current and three-current correlators, the former involving nucleon-nucleon correlators and the latter involving proton-axial-neutron currents. As a result, the axial-vector coupling constant decreases both with baryon density as well as with magnetic field. The axial-vector coupling evaluated with baryon density near the nuclear density $ρ_0$ leads to $g_A^*\approx 0.92$. In the presence of magnetic fields $g_A$ decreases in general, but $g_A^*$ does not show significant changes.

Finite volume and magnetic field effects on the two-pion correlation function in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We study the combined effects of a finite volume and an external magnetic field on the charged two-pion correlation function. For these purposes, we consider a dilute system of pions where the finite volume effects are introduced computing the pion wave functions with rigid boundary conditions in a cylindrical geometry in the presence of a uniform and constant magnetic field. We find that for slow pions, namely, for the case where the average pair momentum is small, the correlation function shows a large distortion, as opposed to the case where the average pair momentum is large. For a finite density system, the intercept of the correlation function is reduced, signaling the increasing importance of the pion ground state contribution. An increasing strength of the magnetic field reduces the importance of the ground state and the intercept becomes closer to 2.

QCD phase diagram in a magnetized medium from the chiral symmetry perspective: The linear sigma model with quarks and the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model effective descriptions

We review the main features of the QCD phase diagram description, at finite temperature, baryon density and in the presence of a magnetic field, from the point of view of effective models, whose main ingredient is chiral symmetry. We concentrate our attention on two of these models: The linear sigma model with quarks and the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. We show that a main ingredient to understand the characteristics of the phase transitions is the inclusion of plasma screening effects that capture the physics of collective, long-wave modes, and thus describe a prime property of plasmas near transition lines, namely, long distance correlations. Inclusion of plasma screening makes possible to understand the inverse magnetic catalysis phenomenon even without the need to consider magnetic field-dependent coupling constants. Screening is also responsible for the emergence of a critical end point in the phase diagram even for small magnetic field strengths. Although versatile, the NJL model is also a more limited approach since, being a non-renormalizable model, a clear separation between pure vacuum and medium effects is not always possible. The model cannot describe inverse magnetic catalysis unless a magnetic field dependent coupling is included. The location of the critical end point strongly depends on the choice of the type of interaction and on the magnetic field dependence of the corresponding coupling. Overall, both models provide sensible tools to explore the properties of magnetized, strongly interacting matter. However, a cross talk among them as well as a consistent physical approach to determine the model parameters is much needed.

Magnetic field dependence of nucleon parameters from QCD sum rules

Finite energy QCD sum rules involving nucleon current correlators are used to determine several QCD and hadronic parameters in the presence of an external, uniform, large magnetic field. The continuum hadronic threshold $s_0$, nucleon mass $m_N$, current-nucleon coupling $λ_N$, transverse velocity $v_\perp$, the spin polarization condensate $\langle\bar qσ_{12} q\rangle$, and the magnetic susceptibility of the quark condensate $χ_q$, are obtained for the case of protons and neutrons. Due to the magnetic field, and charge asymmetry of light quarks up and down, all the obtained quantities evolve differently with the magnetic field, for each nucleon or quark flavor. With this approach it is possible to obtain the evolution of the above parameters up to a magnetic field strength $eB < 1.4$ GeV$^2$.

Magnetic effects of QCD parameters from finite energy sum rules

One of the advantages of the finite energy sum rules is the fact that every operator in the operator product expansion series can be selected individually by the use of an appropriate kernel function which removes other operator poles. This characteristic is maintained by QCD systems in the presence of external homogeneous magnetic field, providing interesting information about the magnetic evolution of QCD and hadronic parameters. In this work finite energy sum rules are applied on QCD in the light quark sector, combining axial and pseudoscalar channels in the presence of an external homogeneous magnetic field, obtaining the magnetic evolution of the light quark masses, pion mass, the pion decay constant, the gluon condensate and the continuum hadronic threshold.

Pions near condensation under compact star conditions

The behavior of pions is studied in systems where their normal leptonic decay is forbidden. When thermal fluctuations are present, a low decay rate is generated, and as a consequence of lepton recombination, the amount of pions remains almost unaltered. Compact stars conditions are favorable for the formation of such intermediate state of charged pions: near condensation and almost stable, leading to a continuum source of anti-neutrinos. In particular, protoneutron stars could be an scenario where this state of matter is relevant.

Aspects of the pseudo Chiral Magnetic Effect in 2D Weyl-Dirac Matter

A connection is established between the continuum limit of the low-energy tight-binding description of graphene immersed in an in-plane magnetic field and the Chiral Magnetic Effect in Quantum Chromodynamics. A combination of mass gaps that explicitly breaks the equivalence of the Dirac cones, favoring an imbalance of pseudo-chiralities, is the essential ingredient to generate a non-dissipative electric current along the external field. Currents, number densities and condensates generated from this setup are investigated for different hierarchies of the energy scales involved.

Induced Bremsstrahlung by light in graphene

We study the generation of an electromagnetic current in monolayer graphene immersed in a weak perpendicular magnetic field and radiated with linearly polarized monochromatic light. Such a current emits Bremsstrahlung radiation with the same amplitude above and below the plane of the sample, in the latter case consistent with the small amount of light absorption in the material. This mechanism could be an important contribution for the reflexion of light phenomenon in graphene.
