Conformal Renormalization of topological black holes in AdS$_6$

We present a streamlined proof that any Einstein-AdS space is a solution of the Lu, Pang and Pope conformal gravity theory in six dimensions. The reduction of conformal gravity into Einstein theory manifestly shows that the action of the latter can be written as the Einstein-Hilbert term plus the Euler topological density and an additional contribution that depends on the Laplacian of the bulk Weyl tensor squared. The prescription for obtaining this form of the action by embedding the Einstein theory into a Weyl-invariant purely metric theory, was dubbed Conformal Renormalization and its resulting action was shown to be equivalent to the one obtained by holographic renormalization. As a non-trivial application of the method, we compute the Noether-Wald charges and thermodynamic quantities for topological black hole solutions with generic transverse section in Einstein-AdS$_6$ theory.

Conformal renormalization of scalar-tensor theories

We study a conformally coupled scalar-tensor theory with a quartic potential possessing local conformal symmetry up to a boundary term. We show that requiring the restoration of the full local conformal symmetry fixes the counterterms that render the on-shell action finite. The building block of the resulting action is a conformally covariant tensor which is constructed out of the metric and the scalar field and it has the same conformal weight as the Weyl tensor. This allows us to obtain the counterterms for the scalar-tensor sector in a closed form. The finiteness of the conformally complete version of the action is suggestive on the validity of the Conformal Renormalization prescription. We extend this theory by adding the Conformal Gravity action and also the Einstein-AdS action written in McDowell-Mansouri form. Even though the latter breaks the conformal symmetry, we find that the action is still renormalized provided a suitable falloff of the scalar field when considering asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter solutions. Black hole solutions in these theories are studied, for which the Hawking temperature and the partition function to first order in the saddle-point approximation are calculated, providing a concrete example of this renormalization scheme.

Noether-Wald charges in six-dimensional Critical Gravity

It has been recently shown that there is a particular combination of conformal invariants in six dimensions which accepts a generic Einstein space as a solution. The Lagrangian of this Conformal Gravity theory -- originally found by Lu, Pang and Pope (LPP) -- can be conveniently rewritten in terms of products and covariant derivatives of the Weyl tensor. This allows one to derive the corresponding Noether prepotential and Noether-Wald charges in a compact form. Based on this expression, we calculate the Noether-Wald charges of six-dimensional Critical Gravity at the bicritical point, which is defined by the difference of the actions for Einstein-AdS gravity and the LPP Conformal Gravity. When considering Einstein manifolds, we show the vanishing of the Noether prepotential of Critical Gravity explicitly, which implies the triviality of the Noether-Wald charges. This result shows the equivalence between Einstein-AdS gravity and Conformal Gravity within its Einstein sector not only at the level of the action but also at the level of the charges.

Hairy Taub-NUT/Bolt-AdS solutions in Horndeski theory

We present different Taub-NUT/Bolt-anti de Sitter (AdS) solutions in a shift-symmetric sector of Horndeski theory of gravity possessing nonminimal kinetic coupling of scalar fields to the Einstein tensor. In four dimensions, we find locally and asymptotically locally AdS solutions possessing nontrivial scalar field. In higher dimensions, analytical Taub-NUT/Bolt-AdS p-branes and solitons are obtained, supported by the existence of p Horndeski scalar fields with axionic profile. The thermodynamical properties are studied through Euclidean methods and it is found that the first law of thermodynamics is satisfied. Moreover, constraints on the parameter space of Horndeski gravity and NUT charge are obtained by demanding positivity of the mass, entropy, and specific heat of the p-branes and soliton. We briefly comment on future applications in holography.

Unimodular Einstein--Cartan gravity: Dynamics and conservation laws

Unimodular gravity is an interesting approach to address the cosmological constant problem, since the vacuum energy density of quantum fields does not gravitate in this framework, and the cosmological constant appears as an integration constant. These features arise as a consequence of considering a constrained volume element 4-form that breaks the diffeomorphisms invariance down to volume preserving diffeomorphisms. In this work, the first-order formulation of unimodular gravity is presented by considering the spin density of matter fields as a source of spacetime torsion. Even though the most general matter Lagrangian allowed by the symmetries is considered, dynamical restrictions arise on their functional dependence. The field equations are obtained and the conservation laws associated with the symmetries are derived. It is found that, analogous to torsion-free unimodular gravity, the field equation for the vierbein is traceless; nevertheless, torsion is algebraically related to the spin density as in standard Einstein-Cartan theory. The particular example of massless Dirac spinors is studied, and comparisons with standard Einstein-Cartan theory are shown.

Limits on beyond standard model messengers as ultra high energy cosmic rays

Up to date, there is no consensus regarding the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) beyond the Greisen--Zatsepin--Kuzmin (GZK) limit. In order for these UHECRs to reach the Earth, an extremely suppressed interaction between them and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is required, which is impossible for standard model (SM) particles, except neutrinos. In this letter, we present constraints on the parameter space of models involving axion-like particles and dark photons, as candidates for UHECRs, by assuming that these particles can traverse the visible Universe without decaying. In the case of axion-like particles, the constraints are tighter than those given in previous works. We present for the first time constraints on the parameter space of dark photon models, by considering their kinetic term mixing with SM photons.

Axions in gravity with torsion

We study a scenario allowing a solution of the strong charge parity problem via the Peccei-Quinn mechanism, implemented in gravity with torsion. In this framework there appears a torsion-related pseudoscalar field known as Kalb-Ramond axion. We compare it with the so-called Barbero-Immirzi axion recently proposed in the literature also in the context of the gravity with torsion. We show that they are equivalent from the viewpoint of the effective theory. The phenomenology of these torsion-descended axions is completely determined by the Planck scale without any additional model parameters. These axions are very light and very weakly interacting with ordinary matter. We briefly comment on their astrophysical and cosmological implications in view of the recent BICEP2 and Planck data.

Torsion in Extra Dimensions and One-Loop Observables

We study gravity with torsion in extra dimensions and derive an effective four-dimensional theory containing four-fermion contact operators at the fundamental scale of quantum gravity in the TeV range. These operators may have an impact on the low-energy observables and can manifest themselves or can be constrained in precision measurements. We calculate possible contributions of these operators to some observables at the one-loop level. We show that the existing precision data on the lepton decay mode of Z boson set limits on the fundamental scale of the gravity and compactification radius, which are more stringent than the limits previously derived in the literature.

Updated limits on extra dimensions through torsion and LHC data

It is well known that inclusion of torsion in the gravitational formalism, leads to four-fermion interactions. Although the coupling constant of this interaction is strongly suppressed in four dimensions, its value is enhanced in models with $n$ extra dimensions. In this context, we reinterpret the recent limits established by LHC experiments to four-fermion contact interactions, to set bounds on the size of the extra dimensions. For $n=2$, the limits are comparable to those in the literature, while for $n\ge 3$ the volume of the extra dimensions is strongly constrained.

Fermion Masses Through Condensation in Spacetimes with Torsion

In this paper we argue the possibility that fermion masses, in particular quarks, originate through the condensation of a fourth family that interacts with all of the quarks via a contact four-fermion term coming from the existence of torsion on the spacetime. Extra dimensions are considered to avoid the hierarchy problem.

Higgs Boson Phenomenology in a Simple Model with Vector Resonances

In this paper we consider a simple scenario where the Higgs boson and two vector resonances are supposed to arise from a new strong interacting sector. We use the ATLAS measurements of the dijet spectrum to set limits on the masses of the resonances. Additionally we compute the Higgs boson decay to two photons and found, when compare to the Standard Model prediction, a small excess which is compatible with ATLAS measurements. Finally we make prediction for Higgs-strahlung processes for the LHC running at 14 TeV.

Phenomenological Constraints to Dimensionality of the Spacetime with Torsion

Using the recent limits established by ATLAS to the contact four-fermion interaction, bounds on the size of the extra dimensions of space-time have been found, by assuming that the contact interactions come through the inclusion of torsion in the higher dimensional theory. For two extra dimensions, the limits are comparable to those in the literature, while for higher dimensional space-time, the volume of the extra dimensions is strongly constrained.
