Realistic Standard Model Fermion Mass Relations in Generalized Minimal Supergravity (GmSUGRA)

Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) usually predict wrong Standard Model (SM) fermion mass relation m_e/m_μ = m_d/m_s toward low energies. To solve this problem, we consider the Generalized Minimal Supergravity (GmSUGRA) models, which are GUTs with gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking and higher dimensional operators. Introducing non-renormalizable terms in the super- and Kähler potentials, we can obtain the correct SM fermion mass relations in the SU(5) model with GUT Higgs fields in the {\bf 24} and {\bf 75} representations, and in the SO(10) model. In the latter case the gauge symmetry is broken down to SU(3)_C X SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R X U(1)_{B-L}, to flipped SU(5)X U(1)_X, or to SU(3)_C X SU(2)_L X U(1)_1 X U(1)_2. Especially, for the first time we generate the realistic SM fermion mass relation in GUTs by considering the high-dimensional operators in the Kähler potential.

Supersymmetry Breaking Scalar Masses and Trilinear Soft Terms in Generalized Minimal Supergravity

In the generalized minimal supergravity (GmSUGRA) scenario, we systematically study the supersymmetry breaking scalar masses, Standard Model fermion Yukawa coupling terms, and trilinear soft terms in SU(5) models with the Higgs fields in the {\bf 24} and {\bf 75} representations, and in SO(10) models where the gauge symmetry is broken down to the Pati-Salam SU(4)_C X SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R gauge symmetry, SU(3)_C X SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R X U(1)_{B-L} gauge symmetry, George-Glashow SU(5) X U(1)' gauge symmetry, flipped SU(5) X U(1)_X gauge symmetry, and SU(3)_C X SU(2)_L X U(1)_1 X U(1)_2 gauge symmetry. Most importantly, we for the first time consider the scalar and gaugino mass relations, which can be preserved from the unification scale to the electroweak scale under one-loop renormalization group equation running, in the SU(5) models, the Pati-Salam models and flipped SU(5) X U(1)_X models arising from SO(10) models. With such interesting relations, we may distinguish the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) and GmSUGRA scenarios if the supersymmetric particle spectrum can be measured at the LHC and ILC. Thus, it provides us with another important window of opportunity at the Planck scale.

Realistic Flipped SU(5) from Orbifold SO(10)

We propose a realistic flipped SU(5) model derived from a five-dimensional orbifold SO(10) model. The Standard Model (SM) fermion masses and mixings are explained by combining the traditional Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism with the five-dimensional wave function profiles of the SM fermions. Employing tree-level spontaneous R-symmetry breaking in the hidden sector and extra(ordinary) gauge mediation, we obtain realistic supersymmetry breaking soft mass terms with non-vanishing gaugino masses. Including the messenger fields at the intermediate scale and Kaluza-Klein states at the compactification scale, we study gauge coupling unification. We show that the SO(10) unified gauge coupling is very strong and the unification scale can be much higher than the compactification scale. We briefly discuss proton decay as well.

Low-Scale SU(4)_W Unification

We embed the minimal left-right model SU(2)_L*SU(2)_R* U(1)_{B-L} into an SU(4)_W gauge group, and break the unified group via five-dimensional S^1/(Z_2*Z_2) orbifolding. Leptons are fitted into SU(4)_W multiplets and located on a symmetry preserving O brane, while quarks are placed onto an O' brane where the symmetry is broken. This approach predicts \sin^2θ_W=0.25 for the weak mixing angle at tree level and leads to a rather low weakly (strongly) coupled unification scale of order 3*10^2 TeV (several TeV) with supersymmetry, or as low as several TeV in the non-supersymmetric case. Another symmetry breaking chain with the low-energy gauge group SU(2)_L*U(1)_{3R}*U(1)_{B-L} can also give rise to a weak mixing angle \sin^2θ_W=0.25 at tree level after gauge symmetry breaking by orbifolding. Such theories with low-scale unification have interesting phenomenological consequences.

Likelihood analysis of the next-to-minimal supergravity motivated model

In anticipation of data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the potential discovery of supersymmetry, in this work we seek an answer to the following: What are the chances that supersymmetry will be found at the LHC? Will the LHC data be enough to discover a given supersymmetric model? And what other measurements can assist the LHC establish the presence of supersymmetry? As a step toward answering these general questions, we calculate the odds of the next-to-minimal version of the popular supergravity motivated model (NmSuGra) being discovered at the LHC to be 4:3 (57 %). We also demonstrate that viable regions of the NmSuGra parameter space outside the LHC reach can be covered by upgraded versions of dark matter direct detection experiments, such as super-CDMS, at 99 % confidence level. Due to the similarities of the models, we expect very similar results for the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM).

Discovery potential of the next-to-minimal supergravity-motivated model

Applying a likelihood analysis to the next-to-minimal supergravity-motivated model, we identify parameter space regions preferred by present experimental limits from collider, astrophysical, and low energy measurements. We then show that favored regions are amenable to detection by a combination of the CERN Large Hadron Collider and an upgraded Cryogenic Dark Matter Search, provided that the more than three sigma discrepancy in the difference of the experimental and the standard theoretical values of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon prevails in the future.

Holographic Quantum Statistics from Dual Thermodynamics

We propose dual thermodynamics corresponding to black hole mechanics with the identifications E' -> A/4, S' -> M, and T' -> 1/T in Planck units. Here A, M and T are the horizon area, mass and Hawking temperature of a black hole and E', S' and T' are the energy, entropy and temperature of a corresponding dual quantum system. We show that, for a Schwarzschild black hole, the dual variables formally satisfy all three laws of thermodynamics, including the Planck-Nernst form of the third law requiring that the entropy tend to zero at low temperature. This is in contrast with traditional black hole thermodynamics, where the entropy is singular. Once the third law is satisfied, it is straightforward to construct simple (dual) quantum systems representing black hole mechanics. As an example, we construct toy models from one dimensional (Fermi or Bose) quantum gases with N ~ M in a Planck scale box. In addition to recovering black hole mechanics, we obtain quantum corrections to the entropy, including the logarithmic correction obtained by previous papers. The energy-entropy duality transforms a strongly interacting gravitational system (black hole) into a weakly interacting quantum system (quantum gas) and thus provides a natural framework for the quantum statistics underlying the holographic conjecture.

All-orders resummation for diphoton production at hadron colliders

We present a QCD calculation of the transverse momentum distribution of photon pairs produced at hadron colliders, including all-orders soft-gluon resummation valid at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We specify the region of phase space in which the calculation is most reliable, compare our results with data from the Fermilab Tevatron, and make predictions for the Large Hadron Collider. The uncertainty of predictions for production of diphotons from fragmentation of final-state quarks is examined.

Naturalness of the Vacuum Energy in Holographic Theories

Based on the cosmic holographic conjecture of Fischler and Susskind, we point out that the average energy density of the universe is bound from above by its entropy limit. Since Friedmann's equation saturates this relation, the measured value of the cosmological energy density is completely natural in the framework of holographic thermodynamics: vacuum energy density fills the available quantum degrees of freedom allowed by the holographic bound. This is in strong contrast with traditional quantum field theories where, since no similar bound applies, the natural value of the vacuum energy is expected to be 123 orders of magnitude higher than the holographic value. Based on our simple calculation, holographic thermodynamics, and consequently any future holographic quantum (gravity) theory, resolves the vacuum energy puzzle.

Direct Detection of Dark Matter in Supersymmetric Models

We evaluate neutralino-nucleon scattering rates in several well-motivated supersymmetric models, and compare against constraints on the neutralino relic density, BF( b\to sγ) as well as the muon anomalous magnetic moment a_μ. In the mSUGRA model, the indirect constraints favor the hyperbolic branch/focus point (HB/FP) region of parameter space, and in fact this region is just where neutralino-nucleon scattering rates are high enough to be detected in direct dark matter search experiments! In Yukawa unified SUSY SO(10) models with scalar mass non-universality, the relic density of neutralinos is almost always above experimental bounds, while the corresponding direct detection rates are below experimental levels. Conversely, in five dimensional SO(10) models where gauge symmetry breaking is the result of compactification of the extra dimension, and supersymmetry breaking is communicated via gaugino mediation, the relic density is quite low, while direct detection rates can be substantial.

Yukawa coupling unification and non-universal gaugino mediation of supersymmetry breaking

The requirement of Yukawa coupling unification highly constrains the SUSY parameter space. In several SUSY breaking scenarios it is hard to reconcile Yukawa coupling unification with experimental constraints from B(b->s gamma) and the muon anomalous magnetic moment a_mu. We show that b-tau or even t-b-tau Yukawa unification can be satisfied simultaneously with b->s gamma and a_mu in the non-universal gaugino mediation scenario. Non-universal gaugino masses naturally appear in higher dimensional grand unified models in which gauge symmetry is broken by orbifold compactification. Relations between SUSY contributions to fermion masses, b->s gamma and a_mu which are typical for models with universal gaugino masses are relaxed. Consequently, these phenomenological constraints can be satisfied simultaneously with a relatively light SUSY spectrum, compared to models with universal gaugino masses.

Updated Reach of the CERN LHC and Constraints from Relic Density, b->s gamma and a(mu) in the mSUGRA Model

{We present an updated assessment of the reach of the CERN LHC pp collider for supersymmetric matter in the context of the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) model. In addition to previously examined channels, we also include signals with an isolated photon or with a leptonically decaying Z boson. For an integrated luminosity of 100 fb^{-1}, values of m_{1/2}\sim 1400 GeV can be probed for small m_0, corresponding to a gluino mass of m_{\tg}\sim 3 TeV. For large m_0, in the hyperbolic branch/focus point region, m_{1/2}\sim 700 GeV can be probed, corresponding to m_{\tg}\sim 1800 GeV. We also map out parameter space regions preferred by the measured values of the dark matter relic density, the b\to sγdecay rate, and the muon anomalous magnetic moment a_μ, and discuss how SUSY might reveal itself in these regions. We find the CERN LHC can probe the entire stau co-annihilation region and also most of the heavy Higgs annihilation funnel allowed by WMAP data, except for some range of large m_0 and m_{1/2} if \tanβ\agt 50.

Chi**2 analysis of the minimal supergravity model including WMAP, g(mu)-2 and b -> s gamma constraints

Recent results from the WMAP measurements of the cosmic background radiation yield very tight constraints on the relic density of supersymmetric cold dark matter. We combine the WMAP constraint with those from the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and the b -> s gamma branching fraction in a chi^2 determination over the minimal supergravity model (mSUGRA) parameter space. The most favored region of mSUGRA parameter space for almost all tan(beta) values is the hyperbolic branch/focus point (HB/FP) region, with moderate to small values of superpotential Higgs mass |mu| and large GUT scale scalar mass m_0. These favored regions of mSUGRA parameter space can be probed by direct search experiments for supersymmetric dark matter. An exception to the HB/FP region can occur at very large tan(beta) with positive mu values, where wide regions allow resonance annihilation of neutralinos in the early universe.

Relic density of neutralinos in minimal supergravity

We evaluate the relic density of neutralinos in the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) model. All 2->2 neutralino annihilation diagrams, as well as all initial states involving sleptons, charginos, neutralinos and third generation squarks are included. Relativistic thermal averaging of the velocity times cross sections is performed. We find that co-annihilation effects are only important on the edges of the model parameter space, where some amount of fine-tuning is necessary to obtain a reasonable relic density. Alternatively, at high tan(beta), annihilation through the broad Higgs resonances gives rise to an acceptable neutralino relic density over broad regions of parameter space where little or no fine-tuning is needed.

Alternatively, at high tan(beta), annihilation through very broad Higgs resonances gives rise to an acceptable neutralino relic density over broad regions of parameter space where little or no fine-tuning is needed. Finally, we compare our results against the reach of various e+e- and hadron colliders for supersymmetric matter.

Impact of Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment on Supersymmetric Models

The recent measurement of a_μ=\frac{g_μ-2}{2} by the E821 Collaboration at Brookhaven deviates from the quoted Standard Model (SM) central value prediction by 2.6σ. The difference between SM theory and experiment may be easily accounted for in a variety of particle physics models employing weak scale supersymmetry (SUSY). Other supersymmetric models are distinctly disfavored. We evaluate a_μfor various supersymmetric models, including minimal supergravity (mSUGRA), Yukawa unified SO(10) SUSY GUTs, models with inverted mass hierarchies (IMH), models with non-universal gaugino masses, gauge mediated SUSY breaking models (GMSB), anomaly-mediated SUSY breaking models (AMSB) and models with gaugino mediated SUSY breaking (inoMSB). Models with Yukawa coupling unification or multi-TeV first and second generation scalars are disfavored by the a_μmeasurement.

Aspects of Supersymmetric Models with a Radiatively Driven Inverted Mass Hierarchy

A promising way to reconcile naturalness with a decoupling solution to the SUSY flavor and CP problems is suggested by models with a radiatively driven inverted mass hierarchy (RIMH). The RIMH models arise naturally within the context of SUSY SO(10) grand unified theories. In their original form, RIMH models suffer from two problems: 1.) obtaining the radiative breakdown of electroweak symmetry, and 2.) generating the correct masses for third generation fermions. The first problem can be solved by the introduction of SO(10) D-term contributions to scalar masses. We show that correct fermion masses can indeed be obtained, but at the cost of limiting the magnitude of the hierarchy that can be generated. We go on to compute predictions for the neutralino relic density as well as for the rate for the decay $b\to sγ$, and show that these yield significant constraints on model parameter space. We show that only a tiny corner of model parameter space is accessible to Fermilab Tevatron searches, assuming an integrated luminosity of 25~$fb^{-1}$. We also quantify the reach of the CERN LHC collider for this class of models, and find values of $m_{\tg}\sim 1600$ GeV to be accessible assuming just 10 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. In an Appendix, we list the two loop renormalization group equations for the MSSM plus right handed neutrino model that we have used in our analysis.
