Discovery of a Magnetic Topological Semimetal Eu$_3$In$_2$As$_4$ with a Single Pair of Weyl Points

Magnetic Weyl semimetal (MWS) is a unique topological state with open surface Fermi arc states and other exotic transport phenomena. However, most reported MWSs show multiple pairs of Weyl points and complicated Fermi surfaces, which increases the difficulty of the investigation into the intrinsic chiral transport property. In this wor, we successfully synthesized a soft magnetic Weyl semimetal Eu$_3$In$_2$As$_4$ with a single pair of Weyl points under magnetic fields. The Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) oscillation with a single frequency, as well as a linear hall resistance with the same carrier density, is observed up to 50 Tesla, indicating a single pair of Weyl points around the Fermi level with a massless fermion ($m^* = 0.121 m_0$, $π$ Berry phase). Such a single pair of Weyl points is further confirmed by the density functional theory calculations. The magnetic ordering and band topology can be easily tuned by the external magnetic field. The field-induced MWS Eu$_3$In$_2$As$_4$ with a single pair of Weyl points is a good platform to detect chiral transport properties, including possible quantum anomalous Hall effect.

Discovery of a Single-Band Mott Insulator in a van der Waals Flat-Band Compound

The Mott insulator provides an excellent foundation for exploring a wide range of strongly correlated physical phenomena, such as high-temperature superconductivity, quantum spin liquid, and colossal magnetoresistance. A Mott insulator with the simplest degree of freedom is an ideal and highly desirable system for studying the fundamental physics of Mottness. In this study, we have unambiguously identified such an anticipated Mott insulator in a van der Waals layered compound Nb3Cl8. In the high-temperature phase, where interlayer coupling is negligible, density functional theory calculations for the monolayer of Nb3Cl8 suggest a half-filled flat band at the Fermi level, whereas angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments observe a large gap. This observation is perfectly reproduced by dynamical mean-field theory calculations considering strong electron correlations, indicating a correlation-driven Mott insulator state. Since this half-filled band derived from a single 2a1 orbital is isolated from all other bands, the monolayer of Nb3Cl8 is an ideal realization of the celebrated single-band Hubbard model. Upon decreasing the temperature, the bulk system undergoes a phase transition, where structural changes significantly enhance the interlayer coupling. This results in a bonding-antibonding splitting in the Hubbard bands, while the Mott gap remains dominant. Our discovery provides a simple and seminal model system for investigating Mott physics and other emerging correlated states.

Temperature-Dependent Collective Excitations in a Three-Dimensional Dirac System ZrTe$_{5}$

Zirconium pentatelluride (ZrTe$_{5}$), a system with a Dirac linear band across the Fermi level and anomalous transport features, has attracted considerable research interest for it is predicted to be located at the boundary between strong and weak topological insulators separated by a topological semimetal phase. However, the experimental verification of the topological phase transition and the topological ground state in ZrTe$_{5}$ is full of controversies, mostly due to the difficulty of precisely capturing the small gap evolution with single-particle band structure measurements. Alternatively, the collective excitations of electric charges, known as plasmons, in Dirac systems exhibiting unique behavior, can well reflect the topological nature of the band structure. Here, using reflective high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), we investigate the temperature-dependent collective excitations of ZrTe$_{5}$, and discover that the plasmon energy in ZrTe$_{5}$ is proportional to the $1/3$ power of the carrier density $n$, which is a unique feature of plasmons in three-dimensional Dirac systems. Based on this conclusion, the origin of the resistivity anomaly of ZrTe$_{5}$ can be attributed to the temperature-dependent chemical potential shift in extrinsic Dirac semimetals.

Dramatic Plasmon Response to the Charge-Density-Wave Gap Development in $1\textit{T}-{\mathrm{TiSe}}_{2}$

1T-TiSe2 is one of the most studied charge density wave (CDW) systems, not only because of its peculiar properties related to the CDW transition, but also due to its status as a promising candidate of exciton insulator signaled by the proposed plasmon softening at the CDW wave vector. Using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, we report a systematic study of the temperature-dependent plasmon behaviors of 1T-TiSe2. We unambiguously resolve the plasmon from phonon modes, revealing the existence of Landau damping to the plasmon at finite momentums, which does not support the plasmon softening picture for exciton condensation. Moreover, we discover that the plasmon lifetime at zero momentum responds dramatically to the bandgap evolution associated with the CDW transition. The interband transitions near the Fermi energy in the normal phase is demonstrated serving as a strong damping channel of plasmons, while such a channel in the CDW phase is suppressed due to the CDW gap opening, which results in the dramatic tunability of the plasmon in semimetals or small-gap semiconductors.

Uniaxial stress effect on the quasi-one-dimensional Kondo lattice CeCo$_2$Ga$_8$

Quantum critical phenomena in the quasi-one-dimensional limit remains an open issue. We report the uniaxial stress effect on the quasi-one-dimensional Kondo lattice CeCo$_2$Ga$_8$ by electric transport and AC heat capacity measurements. CeCo$_2$Ga$_8$ is speculated to sit in close vicinity but on the quantum-disordered side of a quantum critical point. Upon compressing the ${c}$ axis, parallel to the Ce-Ce chain, the onset of coherent Kondo effect is enhanced. In contrast, the electronic specific heat diverges more rapidly at low temperature when the intra-chain distance is elongated by compressions along {a} or {b} axes. These results suggest that a tensile intra-chain strain ($\varepsilon_c >0$) pushes CeCo$_2$Ga$_8$ closer to a quantum critical point, while a compressive intra-chain strain ($\varepsilon_c <0$) likely causes departure. Our work provides a rare paradigm of manipulation near a quantum critical point in a quasi-1D Kondo lattice by uniaxial stress, and paves the way for further investigations on the unique feature of quantum criticality in the quasi-1D limit.

Observation of topological flat bands in the kagome semiconductor Nb$_3$Cl$_8$

The destructive interference of wavefunctions in a kagome lattice can give rise to topological flat bands (TFBs) with a highly degenerate state of electrons. Recently, TFBs have been observed in several kagome metals, including Fe$_3$Sn$_2$, FeSn, CoSn, and YMn$_6$Sn$_6$. Nonetheless, kagome materials that are both exfoliable and semiconducting are lacking, which seriously hinders their device applications. Herein, we show that Nb$_3$Cl$_8$, which hosts a breathing kagome lattice, is gapped out because of the absence of inversion symmetry, while the TFBs survive because of the protection of the mirror reflection symmetry. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations, we directly observe the TFB and a moderate band gap in Nb$_3$Cl$_8$. By mechanical exfoliation, we successfully obtain monolayers of Nb$_3$Cl$_8$ and confirm that they are stable under ambient conditions. In addition, our calculations show that monolayers of Nb$_3$Cl$_8$ have a magnetic ground state, thus providing opportunities to study the interplay between geometry, topology, and magnetism.

Neutron-diffraction and linear {Grüneisen} parameter studies of magnetism in NdFe$_2$Ga$_8$

We study the magnetism in NdFe$_2$Ga$_8$ by the neutron-diffraction and temperature-modulated linear {Grüneisen} parameter measurements. Previous thermodynamical measurements have demonstrated that there are two magnetic transitions at 10 and 14.5 K, respectively. Neutron-diffraction measurements confirm that the lower one is an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition with a commensurate magnetic structure. Both the commensurate and the incommensurate (IC) magnetic peaks are found below the higher transition but their intensities only gradually increase with decreasing temperature. Below 10 K, the commensurate peak intensity increases quickly with decreasing temperature, signaling the AFM transition, while the IC peak intensity disappears below 5 K. The linear {Grüneisen} parameter along the $c$ axis, $Γ_c$, shows a hysteresis behavior that is different from the hysteresis behavior for the magnetization $M$. We give a discussion of the origin of the magnetism in NdFe$_2$Ga$_8$.

Non-thermal breaking of magnetic order via photo-generated spin defects

In Mott insulators the evolution of antiferromagnetic order to superconducting or charge-density-wave-like states upon chemical doping underpins the control of quantum phases. Photo-doping can induce similar transitions on the ultrafast timescale, however the response of the spin system has remained elusive. Here, we use 4D-ultrafast optical spectroscopy to extract quantitative magnetic dynamics in the spin-orbit coupled Mott insulator Sr3Ir2O7. We demonstrate that light can non-thermally melt long-range spin order. At low fluences magnetic order recovers within 1 ps despite demagnetization of roughly 50%. However, high fluences induce a crossover to a long-lived demagnetized state without increasing the lattice temperature. We show that the generation of photo-induced spin defects enables a mechanism that stabilizes the demagnetized state which could help expose new transient phases.

Discovery of Ĉ$_2$ rotation anomaly in topological crystalline insulator SrPb

Topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) are insulating electronic states with nontrivial topology protected by crystalline symmetries. Recently, theory has proposed new classes of TCIs protected by rotation symmetries Ĉ$_n$, which have surface rotation anomaly evading the fermion doubling theorem, i.e. n instead of 2n Dirac cones on the surface preserving the rotation symmetry. Here, we report the first realization of the Ĉ$_2$ rotation anomaly in a binary compound SrPb. Our first-principles calculations reveal two massless Dirac fermions protected by the combination of time-reversal symmetry T and Ĉ$_{2y}$ on the (010) surface. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we identify two Dirac surface states inside the bulk band gap of SrPb, confirming the Ĉ$_2$ rotation anomaly in the new classes of TCIs. The findings enrich the classification of topological phases, which pave the way for exploring exotic behaviour of the new classes of TCIs.

Direct observations of chiral spin textures in van der Waals magnet Fe3GeTe2 nanolayers

In two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) magnets, the presence of magnetic orders, strong spin-orbit coupling and asymmetry at interfaces is the key ingredient for hosting chiral spin textures. However, experimental evidences for chiral magnetism in vdW magnets remain elusive. Here we demonstrate unambiguously the formation of chiral spin textures in thin Fe3GeTe2 nanoflakes using advanced magnetic electron microscopy and first-principles calculations. Specifically, electron holography analyses reveal the spin configurations of Néel-type, zero-field-stabilized skyrmions in 20-nm-thick Fe3GeTe2 nanoflakes at cryogenic temperature. In situ Lorentz transmission electron microscopy measurements further provide detailed magnetic phase diagrams of chiral spin textures including spirals and skyrmions in Fe3GeTe2 as a function of temperature, applied magnetic field and specimen thickness. First-principles calculations unveil a finite interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the Te/Fe3Ge/Te slabs that induces the spin chirality in Fe3GeTe2. Our discovery of spin chirality in the prototypical vdW Fe3GeTe2 opens up new opportunities for studying chiral magnetism in two-dimensional vdW magnets from both fundamental and applied perspectives.

Ultra-Low Latency (ULL) Networks: The IEEE TSN and IETF DetNet Standards and Related 5G ULL Research

Many network applications, e.g., industrial control, demand Ultra-Low Latency (ULL). However, traditional packet networks can only reduce the end-to-end latencies to the order of tens of milliseconds. The IEEE 802.1 Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) standard and related research studies have sought to provide link layer support for ULL networking, while the emerging IETF Deterministic Networking (DetNet) standards seek to provide the complementary network layer ULL support. This article provides an up-to-date comprehensive survey of the IEEE TSN and IETF DetNet standards and the related research studies. The survey of these standards and research studies is organized according to the main categories of flow concept, flow synchronization, flow management, flow control, and flow integrity. ULL networking mechanisms play a critical role in the emerging fifth generation (5G) network access chain from wireless devices via access, backhaul, and core networks. We survey the studies that specifically target the support of ULL in 5G networks, with the main categories of fronthaul, backhaul, and network management. Throughout, we identify the pitfalls and limitations of the existing standards and research studies. This survey can thus serve as a basis for the development of standards enhancements and future ULL research studies that address the identified pitfalls and limitations.

Anisotropic hybridization in a new Kondo lattice compound CeCoInGa$_3$

We report a detailed and comparative study of the single crystal CeCoInGa$_3$ in both experiment and theory. Resistivity measurements reveal the typical behavior of Kondo lattice with the onset temperature of coherence, $T^*\approx 50\,$K. The magnetic specific heat can be well fitted using a spin-fluctuation model at low temperatures, yielding a large Sommerfeld coefficient, $γ\approx172\,$mJ/mol K$^2$ at 6 K, suggesting that this is a heavy-fermion compound with a pronounced coherence effect. The magnetic susceptibility exhibits a broad field-independent peak at $T_χ$ and shows an obvious anisotropy within the $bc$ plane, reflecting the anisotropy of the coherence effect at high temperatures. These are compared with strongly correlated calculations combining first-principles band structure calculations and dynamical mean-field theory. Our results confirm the onset of coherence at about 50 K and reveal a similar anisotropy in the hybridization gap, pointing to a close connection between the hybridization strength of the low-temperature Fermi-liquid state and the high-temperature coherence effect.
