Rydberg Atomic Quantum Satellites for Enhanced Ground-to-Space Direct Uplink Access

This paper investigates the performance advantages of Rydberg atomic quantum (RAQ)-based multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) satellites for enhancing direct ground-to-space uplink access. We analytically evaluate the impact of Rydberg atoms on channel estimation by deriving closed-form expressions for the mean-square error (MSE) and normalized mean-square error (NMSE). Based on the estimated channels, we further derive lower bounds on the achievable data rates for maximum ratio combining (MRC) and zero-forcing (ZF) detection schemes. Rigorous analysis demonstrates that RAQ-MIMO outperforms conventional radio-frequency (RF) MIMO under both Rayleigh and satellite channel conditions. Specifically, compared with conventional MIMO, RAQR achieves a ``squaring" gain under Rayleigh fading, especially in long-distance transmission scenarios with stringent power constraints. In contrast, under line-of-sight (LoS)-dominated satellite channels, this gain saturates as channel-estimation benefits diminish, with the remaining improvement primarily arising from the normalized noise background. Monte Carlo simulations validate the analytical results and show that the performance gains of RAQ-MIMO satellites translate into smaller antenna apertures, lower transmit power, and longer communication ranges, thereby paving the way for next-generation satellite networks.

From Active to Battery-Free: Rydberg Atomic Quantum Receivers for Self-Sustained SWIPT-MIMO Networks

In this paper, we proposed a hybrid simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT)-enabled multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) architecture, where the base station (BS) uses a conventional RF transmitter for downlink transmission and a Rydberg atomic quantum receiver (RAQR) for receiving uplink signal from Internet of Things (IoT) devices. To fully exploit this integration, we jointly design the transmission scheme and the power-splitting strategy to maximize the sum rate, which leads to a non-convex problem. To address this challenge, we first derive closed-form lower bounds on the uplink achievable rates for maximum ratio combining (MRC) and zero-forcing (ZF), as well as on the downlink rate and harvested energy for maximum ratio transmission (MRT) and ZF precoding. Building upon these bounds, we propose an iterative algorithm relying on the best monomial approximation and geometric programming (GP) to solve the non-convex problem. Finally, simulations validate the tightness of our derived lower bounds and demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm over benchmark schemes. Importantly, by integrating RAQR with SWIPT-enabled MIMO, the BS can reliably detect weak uplink signals from IoT devices powered only by harvested energy, enabling battery-free communication.

Exploring the Advantages of Sparse Arrays in Near-Field XL-MIMO Systems: Beam Analysis and EDoF Function

This paper investigates near-field XL-MIMO systems with sparse uniform planar arrays (UPAs). Based on the Green's function-based channel model, the paper derives closed-form expressions for the signal beam power when the distance coordinate or the angular coordinates varies with respective to the focused position. Based on that, closed-form expressions for the lobe length and the suppressing ratio are obtained, indicating that both the distance-focusing property and the grating lobe behavior can be enhanced as the focal distance decreases or the antenna spacing increases. Furthermore, the paper introduces a crucial constraint on system parameters, under which effective degrees-of-freedom (EDoF) of XL-MIMO systems with sparse UPAs can be precisely estimated. Then, the paper proposes an algorithm to obtain a closed-form expression, which can estimate EDoF with high accuracy and low computational complexity. The numerical results verifies the correctness of the main results of this paper.

Agentic AI Empowered Multi-UAV Trajectory Optimization in Low-Altitude Economy Networks

This paper proposes a novel Agentic Retrieval-augmented generation with Mamba-Attention Integrated Transformer (ARMAIT) framework for multi-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) trajectory optimization. The framework is built upon Large Language Models (LLMs), incorporating Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) empowered by Agentic AI and integrated with a UAV-specific knowledge base. Through the Agentic RAG, the LLM autonomously interprets high-level task requirements and identifies the key components necessary for trajectory optimization, including model inputs and outputs, network architecture, reward functions, and task constraints. To support efficient modeling across different system scales, we introduce the Mamba-Attention Integrated Transformer (MAIT), a hybrid neural architecture that combines the long-range dependency modeling capability of attention mechanisms with the efficient temporal dynamic representation of Mamba. Furthermore, a Trajectory-Group Relative Policy Optimization (T-GRPO) method is proposed to achieve unified policy gradient optimization in both discrete and continuous trajectory spaces for MAIT training. Extensive experimental results validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed ARMAIT framework.

Delay-Doppler Diversity Analysis of ODDM Modulation in Satellite Communication Systems

Orthogonal delay-Doppler division multiplexing (ODDM) modulation offers a promising solution to the problem of severe Doppler effects in low earth orbit (LEO) satellites communications. It has been suggested in the recent literature that ODDM modulation can extract full delay-Doppler (DD) diversity, yet a rigorous analysis has not been presented. In this paper, we present a formal analysis of the DD diversity achieved by ODDM modulation along with supporting simulations. Specifically, the analysis and simulations reveal that the asymptotic DD diversity order of ODDM modulation is one, and this order is achieved at lower bit error rate (BER) values for increased frame sizes. We also present low-complexity detector for ODDM modulation based on the Orthogonal approximate message passing (OAMP) algorithm, and show that this detector extracts full DD diversity with the reduced complexity.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Enabled Green and Secure Offloading for Mobile Edge Computing Networks

This paper investigates a multi-user uplink mobile edge computing (MEC) network, where the users offload partial tasks securely to an access point under the non-orthogonal multiple access policy with the aid of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) against a multi-antenna eavesdropper. We formulate a non-convex optimization problem of minimizing the total energy consumption subject to secure offloading requirement, and we build an efficient block coordinate descent framework to iteratively optimize the number of local computation bits and transmit power at the users, the RIS phase shifts, and the multi-user detection matrix at the access point. Specifically, we successively adopt successive convex approximation, semi-definite programming, and semidefinite relaxation to solve the problem with perfect eavesdropper's channel state information (CSI), and we then employ S-procedure and penalty convex-concave to achieve robust design for the imperfect CSI case. We provide extensive numerical results to validate the convergence and effectiveness of the proposed algorithms. We demonstrate that RIS plays a significant role in realizing a secure and energy-efficient MEC network, and deploying a well-designed RIS can save energy consumption by up to 60\% compared to that without RIS. We further reveal impacts of various key factors on the secrecy energy efficiency, including RIS element number and deployment position, user number, task scale and duration, and CSI imperfection.

Cooperative Sensing and Communication Beamforming Design for Low-Altitude Economy

To empower the low-altitude economy with high-accuracy sensing and high-rate communication, this paper proposes a cooperative integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) framework for aerial-ground networks. In the proposed system, the ground base stations (BSs) cooperatively serve the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which are equipped for either joint communication and sensing or sensing-only operations. The BSs employ coordinated beamforming to simultaneously transmit communication and sensing signals, while the UAVs execute their missions. To maximize the weighted sum rate under the sensing signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints, we jointly optimize the transmit beamforming, receive filtering, and UAV trajectory. The resulting non-convex problem is solved using an alternating optimization framework incorporating semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and successive convex approximation (SCA). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed joint design achieves higher communication throughput while ensuring required sensing robustness. Additionally, the sensing SINR threshold and the UAV altitude have a significant impact on the trajectory design, highlighting the necessity of adaptive deployment strategies in practical applications.

Personalized Wireless Federated Learning for Large Language Models

Large language models (LLMs) have driven profound transformations in wireless networks. However, within wireless environments, the training of LLMs faces significant challenges related to security and privacy. Federated Learning (FL), with its decentralized architecture, offers enhanced data privacy protection. Nevertheless, when integrated with LLMs, FL still struggles with several critical limitations, including large-scale and heterogeneous data, resource-intensive training, and substantial communication overhead. To address these challenges, this paper first presents a systematic analysis of the distinct training stages of LLMs in wireless networks, including pre-training, instruction tuning, and alignment tuning. Building upon this foundation, we propose a Personalized Wireless Federated Fine-tuning (PWFF) framework. Initially, we utilize the adapter and Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) techniques to decrease energy consumption, while employing global partial aggregation to reduce communication delay. Subsequently, we develop two reward models and design a personalized loss function to fulfill the goal of personalized learning. Furthermore, we implement a local multi-objective alignment to ensure the stability and effectiveness of the FL process. Finally, we conduct a series of simulations to validate the performance of the proposed PWFF method and provide an in-depth discussion of the open issues.

Near-Field Directional Modulation for RIS-Aided Movable Antenna MIMO Systems with Hardware Impairments

Movable antennas (MAs) are a promising technology to achieve a significant enhancement in rate for future wireless networks. The pioneering investigation on near-field directional modulation design for a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted MA system is presented, with the base station equipped with a MA array. To maximize the secrecy sum rate (Max-SSR) with hardware impairments (HWIs) and imperfect channel state information (CSI), which involves a joint optimization of beamforming vectors for confidential messages and artificial noise (AN), power allocation factors, phase shift matrices, MA positions, and receive beamforming vectors. Firstly, the transmit beamforming vectors and phase shift matrices are iteratively optimized, leveraging leakage theory and phase alignment techniques. Then, two novel algorithms for discrete MA positioning are proposed, respectively, employing uniform and compressed sensing (CS)-based non-uniform grouping strategies. Subsequently, the AN is considered and designed as the additional energy required for zero-space projection, and the receive beamforming vector is derived using the minimum mean square error (MMSE) method. The proposed algorithms have low computational complexity. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms. Under HWIs and imperfect CSI, the proposed algorithm can achieve a 28\% enhancement in SSR performance while reducing the number of antennas by 37.5\% compared to traditional fixed-position antenna (FPA) systems.

Performance Analysis of Cooperative Integrated Sensing and Communications for 6G Networks

In this work, we aim to effectively characterize the performance of cooperative integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) networks and to reveal how performance metrics relate to network parameters. To this end, we introduce a generalized stochastic geometry framework to model the cooperative ISAC networks, which approximates the spatial randomness of the network deployment. Based on this framework, we derive analytical expressions for key performance metrics in both communication and sensing domains, with a particular focus on communication coverage probability and radar information rate. The analytical expressions derived explicitly highlight how performance metrics depend on network parameters, thereby offering valuable insights into the deployment and design of cooperative ISAC networks. In the end, we validate the theoretical performance analysis through Monte Carlo simulation results. Our results demonstrate that increasing the number of cooperative base stations (BSs) significantly improves both metrics, while increasing the BS deployment density has a limited impact on communication coverage probability but substantially enhances the radar information rate. Additionally, increasing the number of transmit antennas is effective when the total number of transmit antennas is relatively small. The incremental performance gain reduces with the increase of the number of transmit antennas, suggesting that indiscriminately increasing antennas is not an efficient strategy to improve the performance of the system in cooperative ISAC networks.

Modular XL-Array-Enabled 3-D Localization based on Hybrid Spherical-Planar Wave Model in Terahertz Systems

This work considers the three-dimensional (3-D) positioning problem in a Terahertz (THz) system enabled by a modular extra-large (XL) array with sub-connected architecture. Our purpose is to estimate the Cartesian Coordinates of multiple user equipments (UEs) with the received signal of the RF chains while considering the spatial non-stationarity (SNS). We apply the hybrid spherical-planar wave model (HSPWM) as the channel model owing to the structual feature of the modular array, and propose a 3-D localization algorithm with relatively high accuracy and low complexity. Specifically, we first distinguish the visible sub-arrays (SAs) located in the VR and estimate the angles-of-arrival (AoAs) from each UE to typical visible SAs with the largest receive power via compressed sensing (CS) method. In addition, we apply the weighted least square (WLS) method to obtain a coarse 3-D position estimation of each UE according to the AoA estimations. Then, we estimate the AoAs of the other SAs with a reduced dictionary (RD)-CS-based method for lower computational complexity, and utilize all the efficient AoA estimations to derive a fine position estimation. Simulation results indicate that the proposed positioning framework based on modular XL-array can achieve satisfactory accuracy with evident reduction in complexity. Furthermore, the deployment of SAs and the allocation of antenna elements need to be specially designed for better positioning performance.

Machine Learning-based Near-field Emitter Location Sensing via Grouped Hybrid Analog and Digital XL-MIMO Receive Array

As a green MIMO structure, the partially-connected hybrid analog and digital (PC-HAD) structure has been widely used in the far-field (FF) scenario for it can significantly reduce the hardware cost and complexity of large-scale or extremely large-scale MIMO (XL-MIMO) array. Recently, near-field (NF) emitter localization including direction-of-arrival (DOA) and range estimations has drawn a lot of attention, but is rarely explored via PC-HAD structure. In this paper, we first analyze the impact of PC-HAD structure on the NF emitter localization and observe that the phase ambiguity (PA) problem caused by PC-HAD structure can be removed inherently with low-latency in the NF scenario. To obtain the exact NF DOA estimation results, we propose a grouped PC-HAD structure, which is capable of dividing the NF DOA estimation problem into multiple FF DOA estimation problems via partitioning the large-scale PC-HAD array into small-scale groups. An angle calibration method is developed to address the inconsistency among these FF DOA estimation problems. Then, to eliminate PA and improve the NF emitter localization performance, we develop three machine learning (ML)-based methods, i.e., two low-complexity data-driven clustering-based methods and one model-driven regression method, namely RegNet. Furthermore, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of NF emitter localization for the proposed grouped PC-HAD structure is derived and reveals that localization performance will decrease with the increasing of the number of groups. The simulation results show that the proposed methods can achieve CRLB at different SNR regions, the RegNet has great performance advantages at low SNR regions and the clustering-based methods have much lower computation complexity.

Secure Directional Modulation with Movable Antenna Array Aided by RIS

In this paper, to fully exploit the performance gains from moveable antennas (MAs) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), a RIS-aided directional modulation \textcolor{blue}{(DM)} network with movable antenna at base station (BS) is established Based on the principle of DM, a BS equipped with MAs transmits legitimate information to a single-antenna user (Bob) while exploiting artificial noise (AN) to degrade signal reception at the eavesdropper (Eve). The combination of AN and transmission beamforming vectors is modeled as joint beamforming vector (JBV) to achieve optimal power allocation. The objective is to maximize the achievable secrecy rate (SR) by optimizing MAs antenna position, phase shift matrix (PSM) of RIS, and JBV. The limited movable range (MR) and discrete candidate positions of the MAs at the BS are considered, which renders the optimization problem non-convex. To address these challenges, an optimization method under perfect channel state information (CSI) is firstly designed, in which the MAs antenna positions are obtained using compressive sensing (CS) technology, and JBV and PSM are iteratively optimized. Then, the design method and SR performance under imperfect CSI is investigated. The proposed algorithms have fewer iterations and lower complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that MAs outperform fixed-position antennas in SR performance when there is an adequately large MR available.

Uplink Transmission Design for Fluid Antenna-Enabled Multiuser MIMO Systems with Imperfect CSI

This paper investigates a two-timescale uplink transmission framework for a fluid antenna-enabled multiuser multi-input multi-output system (MIMO-FAS). Antenna positions are optimized based on statistical channel state information (CSI), while beamforming vectors at the base station (BS) adapt to instantaneous CSI. Under a Rician fading channel with imperfect CSI, we establish a linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE)-based channel estimation approach and derive a closed-form expression for the achievable uplink rate using a low-complexity maximal-ratio-combining (MRC) detector. The optimization problem is formulated as a minimum user rate maximization problem by optimizing the fluid antenna positions, subject to the feasible region and the minimum spacing distance constraints. To address this non-convex problem, a genetic algorithm (GA) method is proposed, encoding antenna configurations as population individuals. Additionally, an accelerated gradient ascent algorithm is proposed to enhance computational efficiency. Numerical results validate the mathematical derivations and demonstrate that the proposed two-timescale transmission strategy significantly outperforms traditional FPA systems, with both algorithms achieving enhanced gains.

CommGPT: A Graph and Retrieval-Augmented Multimodal Communication Foundation Model

Large Language Models (LLMs) possess human-level cognitive and decision-making capabilities, making them a key technology for 6G. However, applying LLMs to the communication domain faces three major challenges: 1) Inadequate communication data; 2) Restricted input modalities; and 3) Difficulty in knowledge retrieval. To overcome these issues, we propose CommGPT, a multimodal foundation model designed specifically for communications. First, we create high-quality pretraining and fine-tuning datasets tailored in communication, enabling the LLM to engage in further pretraining and fine-tuning with communication concepts and knowledge. Then, we design a multimodal encoder to understand and process information from various input modalities. Next, we construct a Graph and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (GRG) framework, efficiently coupling Knowledge Graph (KG) with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) for multi-scale learning. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the CommGPT through experimental validation.

M4SC: An MLLM-based Multi-modal, Multi-task and Multi-user Semantic Communication System

Multi-modal Large Language Models (MLLMs) are capable of precisely extracting high-level semantic information from multi-modal data, enabling multi-task understanding and generation. This capability facilitates more efficient and intelligent data transmission in semantic communications. In this paper, we design a tailored MLLM for semantic communication and propose an MLLM-based Multi-modal, Multi-task and Multi-user Semantic Communication (M4SC) system. First, we utilize the Kolmogorov-Arnold Network (KAN) to achieve multi-modal alignment in MLLMs, thereby enhancing the accuracy of semantics representation in the semantic space across different modalities. Next, we introduce a multi-task fine-tuning approach based on task instruction following, which leverages a unified task instruction template to describe various semantic communication tasks, improving the MLLM's ability to follow instructions across multiple tasks. Additionally, by designing a semantic sharing mechanism, we transmit the public and private semantic information of multiple users separately, thus increasing the efficiency of semantic communication. Finally, we employ a joint KAN-LLM-channel coding strategy to comprehensively enhance the performance of the semantic communication system in complex communication environments. Experimental results validate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed M4SC in multi-modal, multi-task, and multi-user scenarios.
