HEALPix View-order for 3D Radial Self-Navigated Motion-Corrected ZTE MRI

Compressed sensing has reinvigorated the field of non-Cartesian sampling in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Until now there has been no 3D radial view-order which meets all the desired characteristics for simultaneous dynamic/high-resolution imaging, such as for self-navigated motion-corrected high resolution neuroimaging. In this work, we examine the use of Hierarchical Equal Area iso-Latitude Pixelization (HEALPix) for generation of three-dimensional (3D) radial view-orders for MRI, and compare to a selection of commonly used 3D view-orders. The resulting trajectories were evaluated through simulation of the point spread function and slanted surface object suitable for modulation transfer function, contrast ratio, and SNR measurement. Results from the HEALPix view-order were compared to Generalized Spiral, 2D Golden Means, and Random view-orders. Finally, we show the first use of the HEALPix view-order to acquire in-vivo brain images.

Gap Cycling for SWIFT

Purpose: SWIFT (SWeep Imaging with Fourier Transformation) is a non- Cartesian MRI method with unique features and capabilities. In SWIFT, radiofrequency (RF) excitation and reception are performed nearly simultaneously, by rapidly switching between transmit and receive during a frequency-swept RF pulse. Because both the transmitted pulse and data acquisition are simultaneously amplitude-modulated in SWIFT (in contrast to continuous RF excitation and uninterrupted data acquisition in more familiar MRI sequences), crosstalk between different frequency bands occurs in the data. This crosstalk leads to a "bulls-eye" artifact in SWIFT images. We present a method to cancel this inter-band crosstalk by cycling the pulse and receive gap positions relative to the un-gapped pulse shape. We call this strategy "gap cycling." Methods: We carry out theoretical analysis, simulation and experiments to characterize the signal chain, resulting artifacts, and their elimination for SWIFT. Results: Theoretical analysis reveals the mechanism for gap-cycling's effectiveness in canceling inter-band crosstalk. We show phantom and in-vivo results demonstrating bulls-eye artifact free images. Conclusion: Gap cycling is an effective method to remove bulls-eye artifact resulting from inter-band crosstalk in SWIFT data.

Effects of T2 Relaxation and Diffusion on Longitudinal Magnetization State and Signal Build for HOMOGENIZED Cross Peaks

An analytical expression has been developed to describe the effects of T2 relaxation and diffusing spatially modulated longitudinal spins during the signal build period of an HOMOGENIZED cross peak. Diffusion of the longitudinal spins results in a lengthening of the effective dipolar demagnetization time, delaying the re-phasing of coupled anti-phase states in the quantum picture. In the classical picture the unwinding rate of spatially twisted magnetization is no longer constant, but decays exponentially with time. The expression is experimentally verified for the HOMOGENIZED spectrum of 100mM TSP in H2O at 4.7T. Spatially Varying Steady State Longitudinal Magnetization in Distant Dipolar Field-based Sequences

Sequences based on the Distant Dipolar Field (DDF) have shown great promise for novel spectroscopy and imaging. Unless spatial variation in the longitudinal magnetization, M_{z}(s), is eliminated by relaxation, diffusion, or spoiling techniques by the end of a single repetition, unexpected results can be obtained due to spatial harmonics in the steady state M_{z}^{SS}(s) profile. This is true even in a homogeneous single-component sample. We have developed an analytical expression for the M_{z}^{SS}(s) profile that occurs in DDF sequences when smearing by diffusion is negligible in the TR period. The expression has been verified by directly imaging the M_{z}^{SS}(s) profile after establishing the steady state. more keywords: magnetic resonance, intermolecular multiple quantum coherence, mesoscale structure, iMQC, DDF
