Continuity of the bending map

The bending map of a hyperbolic 3-manifold maps a convex cocompact hyperbolic metric on a hyperbolic 3-manifold with boundary to its bending measured geodesic lamination. In the present paper we study the extension of this map to the space of geometrically finite hyperbolic metrics. We introduce a relationship on the space of measured geodesic laminations and shows that the quotient map obtained from the bending map is continuous. October 2025, an erratum has been added that corrects an error in the main Theorem. The topology used in the quotient space should not be the quotient topology but the "tubular topology" defined in this erratum.

Properness of the bending map

The bending map of a hyperbolic 3-manifold with boundary maps a geometrically hyperbolic metric to its bending measured geodesic lamination. We show that the bending map is proper. As a byproduct of the proof we show that the group of isotopy classes of homeomorphisms of M acts properly discontinuously on the set of doubly incompressible measured geodesic laminations.

Homoclinic leaves, Hausdorff limits and homeomorphisms

We show that except for one exceptional case, a lamination on the boundary of a 3-dimensional handlebody H is a Hausdorff limit of meridians if and only if it is commensurable to a lamination with a 'homoclinic leaf'. This is a precise version of a philosophy called Casson's Criterion, which appeared in unpublished notes of A. Casson. Applications include a characterization of when a non-minimal lamination is a Hausdorff limit of meridians, in terms of properties of its minimal components, and a related characterization of which reducible self-homeomorphisms of the boundary of H have powers that extend to subcompressionbodies of H.

Thurston's Bounded image theorem

Thurston's bounded image theorem is one of the key steps in his proof of the uniformisation theorem for Haken manifolds. Thurston never published its proof, and no proof has been known up to today, although a proof of its weaker version, called the bounded orbit theorem is known. In this paper, we give a proof of the original bounded image theorem, relying on recent development of Kleinian group theory.

Horospheres in degenerate 3-manifolds

We study horospheres in hyperbolic 3-manifolds $M$ all whose ends are degenerate. Towards this, we study which almost minimizing geodesics in $M$ go through arbitrarily thin parts.

An extension of the Masur domain

The Masur domain is a subset of the space of projective measured geodesic laminations on the boundary of a 3-manifold M. This domain plays an important role in the study of the hyperbolic structures on the interior of M. In this paper, we define an extension of the Masur domain and explain that it shares a lot of properties with the Masur domain.

Convergence and divergence of Kleinian surface groups

We characterize sequences of Kleinian surface groups with convergent subsequences in terms of the asymptotic behavior of the ending invariants of the associated hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Asymptotic behavior of end invariants in a convergent sequence predicts the parabolic locus of the algebraic limit as well as how the algebraic limit wraps within the geometric limit under the natural locally isometric covering map.

Strong convergence of Kleinian groups: the cracked eggshell

In this paper we give a complete description of the set of discrete faithful representations SH(M) uniformizing a compact, orientable, hyperbolizable 3-manifold M with incompressible boundary, equipped with the strong topology, with the description given in term of the end invariants of the quotient manifolds. As part of this description, we introduce coordinates on SH(M) that extend the usual Ahlfors-Bers coordinates. We use these coordinates to show the local connectivity of SH(M) and study the action of the modular group of M on SH(M).

Primitive stable closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds

We show that closed 3-manifolds with high Heegaard distance and bounded subsurface Heegaard distance are primitive stable when they are regarded as representations from the free group corresponding to the handlebody. This implies that any point on the boundary of Schottky space can be approximated by primitive stable representations corresponding to closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

The convex core of quasifuchsian manifolds with particles

We consider quasifuchsian manifolds with "particles", i.e., cone singularities of fixed angle less than $π$ going from one connected component of the boundary at infinity to the other. Each connected component of the boundary at infinity is then endowed with a conformal structure marked by the endpoints of the particles. We prove that this defines a homeomorphism from the space of quasifuchsian metrics with $n$ particles (of fixed angle) and the product of two copies of the Teichmüller space of a surface with $n$ marked points. This is analoguous to the Bers theorem in the non-singular case. Quasifuchsian manifolds with particles also have a convex core. Its boundary has a hyperbolic induced metric, with cone singularities at the intersection with the particles, and is pleated along a measured geodesic lamination. We prove that any two hyperbolic metrics with cone singularities (of prescribed angle) can be obtained, and also that any two measured bending laminations, satisfying some obviously necessary conditions, can be obtained, as in [BO] in the non-singular case.

Convergence of freely decomposable Kleinian groups

We consider a compact orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with a compressible boundary. Suppose that we are given a sequence of geometrically finite hyperbolic metrics whose conformal boundary structures at infinity diverge to a projective lamination. We prove that if this limit projective lamination is doubly incompressible, then the sequence has compact closure in the deformation space. As a consequence we generalise Thurston's double limit theorem and solve his conjecture on convergence of function groups affirmatively.

Convexity of strata in diagonal pants graphs of surfaces

We prove a number of convexity results for strata of the diagonal pants graph of a surface, in analogy with the extrinsic geometric properties of strata in the Weil-Petersson completion. As a consequence, we exhibit convex flat subgraphs of every possible rank inside the diagonal pants graph.
