Probing Saturation Effect in Heavy Meson Pair Correlation in Forward $pA$ Collisions

Forward two-particle angular correlations in $pA$ collisions have long been recognized as a particularly sensitive observable for exploring gluon saturation effects. In the back-to-back regime, two-particle correlations receive substantial contributions from both soft-gluon radiation and saturation effects. In this work, we study heavy meson pair correlation in forward proton-nucleus collisions by incorporating a unified Sudakov resummation for heavy meson pair correlations in the Color Glass Condensate effect theory. Our results are in good agreement with the $Δϕ$ data measured by the LHCb Collaboration for $D^0 \bar D^0$ pairs in forward $pp$ and $pA$ collisions, as well as $J/ψ$ pairs from $b\bar b$ decays in forward $pp$ collisions. Furthermore, we present predictions for $D\bar D$ and $B\bar B$ correlations in the forward rapidity regions at the Large Hadron Collider. A pronounced mass-hierarchy is observed in the nuclear modification factor, $R_{pA}\big|_{m_b}<R_{pA}\big|_{m_c}$, indicating stronger sensitivity to saturation effects at small $x$. As the rapidity increases, the suppression becomes more pronounced while the mass hierarchy remains robust. This study will help us to search for the saturation signal via heavy-meson pair correlations in forward $pA$ collisions.

Back-to-back dijet production in DIS with finite-energy corrections and twist-3 gluon TMDs

This work presents the summary of calculation of the cross section of the dijet production in deep inelastic scattering at small x at next-to-eikonal accuracy. The cross section is calculated in the back-to-back limit of the produced jets using results obtained in our previous works. The cross section is expressed via the transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) parton distributions. Specifically, we show how the next-to-eikonal corrections are related to the $x$ dependent phase of twist-2 gluon TMD and to twist-3 unpolarized gluon TMDs.

Unified Resummation of Soft Gluon Radiation in Heavy Meson Pair Photoproduction

We develop a unified resummation framework for heavy-meson pair photoproduction that treats soft-gluon radiation in a massive scheme for $|\boldsymbol q| \lesssim m_Q$ and is consistent with the massless limit $m_Q \ll |\boldsymbol q|$, where $\boldsymbol q$ denotes the transverse momentum of the pair and $m_Q$ the quark mass. This framework describes the full correlation regime $|\boldsymbol q| \ll |\boldsymbol P|$, with $\boldsymbol P$ the pair's relative transverse momentum. Next, within the Color Glass Condensate framework, we quantify the impact of soft gluon radiation on two important phenomenological observables, namely, the azimuthal $Δϕ$ correlation and the harmonic asymmetries $\langle \cos(2nϕ_{qP})\rangle$. Our results show that the resummation provides an excellent description of the H1 $Δϕ$ data. We then find that the angular-asymmetry harmonics are sizable and their ratios in $γA$ to $γp$ collisions are highly sensitive to gluon saturation. We further find a clear mass hierarchy in both observables, indicating that heavy-quark masses suppress soft radiation and thereby enhance genuine small-$x$ saturation signals. Our work demonstrates that heavy-quark pair photoproduction provides a quantitative probe of gluon saturation, directly measurable in forthcoming EIC and UPC measurements. Finally, the unified resummation is readily extendable to other processes involving massive particles and jets in both $eA$ and $pA$ collisions.

SIDIS at small $x$ at next-to-leading order: transverse photon

We calculate the next-to-leading order corrections to single inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering at small $x$ using the color glass condensate formalism, for the case when the exchanged photon is transversely polarized. We show all UV and soft divergences cancel while collinear and rapidity divergences result in scale evolution of quark-hadron fragmentation function and small-x evolution of dipole amplitudes, respectively.

Sudakov double logs in single-inclusive hadron production in DIS at small $x$ from the Color Glass Condensate formalism

We investigate the high $Q^2$ (photon virtuality) limit of single-inclusive hadron production in DIS (SIDIS) at small $x$, using the color glass condensate formalism at next-to-leading order. We focus on the $Λ_{QCD}^2 \ll \mathbf{p}_h^2 \ll Q^2$ kinematic regime where $\mathbf{p}_h$ is the produced hadron transverse momentum, and extract the Sudakov double logarithms. We further argue that compatibility between the CGC calculation and TMD factorization at one-loop order can only be achieved if the small-x evolution is kinematically constrained.

Simple Scaling Laws for Energy Correlators in Nuclear Matter

Collider experiments involving nuclei provide a direct means of studying exotic states of nuclear matter. Recent measurements of energy correlators in both proton-nucleus (p-A) and nucleus-nucleus (A-A) collisions reveal sizable modifications, attributable to nuclear effects, compared to proton-proton (p-p) collisions. Energy correlators, and their associated light-ray operator product expansion (OPE), allow scaling behaviors of the measured spectrum to be directly mapped to properties of the underlying quantum field theory. Here, we demonstrate for the first time how this mapping occurs in nuclear collisions, and highlight how the light-ray OPE characterizes leading nuclear effects. We show that the leading modification to the energy correlator distribution is characterized by an enhancement of the expectation value of twist-4 light-ray operators, resulting in a scaling for the ratio of the two-point correlator in nuclear matter to that in vacuum of $\sim 1+aθ^2$ up to quantum corrections. We verify that this leading twist-4 correction accurately describes recent A-A and p-A data, and is thus sufficient to capture the scaling behavior within the angular range measured for jet radii used in nuclear experiments. Our light-ray OPE based approach lays the groundwork for a rigorous characterization of nuclear modification to energy correlator observables.

Back-to-back dijet production in DIS at next-to-eikonal accuracy and twist-3 gluon TMDs

We consider dijet production in deep inelastic scattering at small $x$, on a purely gluonic unpolarized target. Starting from earlier results obtained at next-to-eikonal accuracy in the high-energy limit, we perform the expansion in the back-to-back dijet limit, at next-to-leading power accuracy. We rewrite our results in the language of transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) factorization, in terms of twist-2 and twist-3 TMD gluon distributions (gluon TMDs). Among the next-to-eikonal corrections, we find in particular twist-2 contributions corresponding to the $x$ dependent phase of the twist-2 gluon TMDs. We also find two types of twist-3 unpolarized gluon TMDs, as well as correlators of three gluon field strength tensors.

Towards an Interpretation of the First Measurements of Energy Correlators in the Quark-Gluon Plasma

Energy correlators have recently been proposed as a class of jet substructure observables that directly link experimental measurements of the asymptotic energy flux with the field theoretic description of the underlying microscopic dynamics. This link holds particular promise in heavy-ion physics, where both experimental measurements and theoretical interpretations are inherently complex. With recent measurements of energy correlators in proton-proton collisions, the first measurement of these observables on inclusive jets in heavy-ion collisions underscores the importance of a theoretical understanding of their behavior in this complex environment. In this manuscript, we extend our previous calculations to account for several effects necessary for a qualitative understanding of the behavior of energy correlators on inclusive jets in heavy-ion collisions. Through a semi-analytic approach implemented in a hydrodynamically expanding quark-gluon plasma (QGP), we account for medium-induced radiation with leading broadening effects, selection biases arising from energy loss, and a description of the confinement transition. Our results represent a crucial first step towards interpreting the measurements of energy correlators on inclusive jets in heavy-ion collisions, which marks a significant milestone in connecting heavy-ion experiment and fundamental quantum field theory, in the quest to disentangle the microscopic dynamics of the QGP.

Seeing Beauty in the Quark-Gluon Plasma with Energy Correlators

Heavy quarks created in heavy-ion collisions serve as an excellent probe of the produced quark-gluon plasma (QGP). The radiation pattern of jets formed from heavy quarks as they traverse the QGP exhibits a particularly interesting structure due to the interplay of two competing effects: the suppression of small-angle radiation, also known as the ``dead-cone'' effect, and the enhancement of emitted gluons by medium-induced radiation. In this Letter, we propose a new observable, based on the energy correlator approach to jet substructure, which will allow us to disentangle the two scales associated to these two phenomena and to determine under which conditions the dead-cone is filled by medium-induced radiation. Combined with the forthcoming high-statistics measurements of heavy-flavor jets, this work provides a novel tool to unravel the dynamics of the QGP.

A Coherent View of the Quark-Gluon Plasma from Energy Correlators

The ability to measure detailed aspects of the substructure of high-energy jets traversing the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) has provided a new window into its internal dynamics. However, drawing robust conclusions from traditional jet substructure observables has been difficult. In this manuscript we expand on a new approach to jet substructure in heavy-ion collisions based on the study of correlation functions of energy flow operators (energy correlators). We compute the two-point energy correlator of an in-medium massless quark jet and perform a detailed numerical analysis of the produced spectra. Our calculation incorporates vacuum radiation resummed at next-to-leading log accuracy together with the leading order contribution in medium-induced splittings evaluated through the BDMPS-Z multiple scattering and GLV single scattering formalisms for a static brick of QGP. Our analysis demonstrates how particular features of the modifications of in-medium splittings are imprinted in the correlator spectra, particularly showing how energy correlators may be used to extract the onset of colour coherence. We further present a comprehensive discussion on the accuracy and limitations of our study emphasizing how it can be systematically improved. This work sets the foundations for a rich program studying energy correlators in heavy-ion collisions.

Resolving the Scales of the Quark-Gluon Plasma with Energy Correlators

Jets provide us with ideal probes of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in heavy-ion collisions, since its dynamics at its different scales is imprinted into the multi-scale substructure of the final state jets. We present a new approach to jet substructure in heavy-ion collisions based on the study of correlation functions of energy flow operators. By analysing the two-point correlator of an in-medium quark jet, we demonstrate that the spectra of correlation functions robustly identify the scales defined by the properties of the QGP, particularly those associated with the onset of colour coherence.

Low projectile density contributions in the dilute-dense CGC framework for two-particle correlations

At leading-order, the standard dilute-dense Color Glass Condensate formula used for two-particle correlations in proton-nucleus collisions, whose symmetries prevent the generation of odd azimuthal anisotropy harmonics, is the dilute projectile limit of the dense-dense formalism. However, when the projectile is genuinely dilute, the complete formulation contains additional contributions at the same leading order in the strong coupling constant. In this work we investigate those low projectile density contributions that are relevant when the particles are produced at forward rapidities. We find that they are responsible for non-zero odd harmonics which are negative, in qualitative agreement with recent experimental measurements at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider.

Dijet photoproduction at low $x$ at next-to-leading order and its back-to-back limit

We compute the cross section for the inclusive photoproduction of a pair of jets at next-to-leading order accuracy in the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective theory. The aim is to study the back-to-back limit, to investigate whether transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization can be recovered at this order. In particular, we focus on the large Sudakov double logarithms, which are major ingredients of the TMD evolution. Interestingly, the kinematical improvement of the low-$x$ resummation scheme turns out to be a key ingredient in the analysis.

Prospects for quarkonium studies at the high-luminosity LHC

Prospects for quarkonium-production studies accessible during the upcoming high-luminosity phases of the CERN Large Hadron Collider operation after 2021 are reviewed. Current experimental and theoretical open issues in the field are assessed together with the potential for future studies in quarkonium-related physics. This will be possible through the exploitation of the huge data samples to be collected in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, both in the collider and fixed-target modes. Such investigations include, among others, those of: (i) J/psi and Upsilon produced in association with other hard particles; (ii) chi(c,b) and eta(c,b) down to small transverse momenta; (iii) the constraints brought in by quarkonia on gluon PDFs, nuclear PDFs, TMDs, GPDs and GTMDs, as well as on the low-x parton dynamics; (iv) the gluon Sivers effect in polarised-nucleon collisions; (v) the properties of the quark-gluon plasma produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions and of collective partonic effects in general; and (vi) double and triple parton scatterings.

On systematic effects in the numerical solutions of the JIMWLK equation

In the high energy limit of hadron collisions, the evolution of the gluon density in the longitudinal momentum fraction can be deduced from the Balitsky hierarchy of equations or, equivalently, from the nonlinear Jalilian-Marian-Iancu-McLerran-Weigert-Leonidov-Kovner (JIMWLK) equation. The solutions of the latter can be studied numerically by using its reformulation in terms of a Langevin equation. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of systematic effects associated with the numerical framework, in particular the ones related to the inclusion of the running coupling. We consider three proposed ways in which the running of the coupling constant can be included: "square root" and "noise" prescriptions and the recent proposal by Hatta and Iancu. We implement them both in position and momentum spaces and we investigate and quantify the differences in the resulting evolved gluon distributions. We find that the systematic differences associated with the implementation technicalities can be of a similar magnitude as differences in running coupling prescriptions in some cases, or much smaller in other cases.

Low-$x$ improved TMD approach to the lepto- and hadroproduction of a heavy-quark pair

We study lepto- and hadroproduction of a heavy-quark pair in the ITMD factorization framework for dilute-dense collisions. Due to the presence of a nonzero quark mass and/or nonzero photon virtuality, new contributions appear compared to the cases of photo- and hadroproduction of dijets, for which the ITMD framework was originally derived. The extra terms are sensitive to gluons that are not fully linearly polarized. At small $x$ those gluons emerge only when saturation effects are taken into account, and in a proper way. As a result, in linear small-$x$ frameworks where gluon are fully linearly polarized, such contributions are absent. We show however that they are not always negligible, even for large gluon transverse momentum, due to the behavior of the off-shell hard factors.
