The isometry group of Wasserstein spaces: the Hilbertian case

Motivated by Kloeckner's result on the isometry group of the quadratic Wasserstein space $\mathcal{W}_2\left(\mathbb{R}^n\right)$, we describe the isometry group $\mathrm{Isom}\left(\mathcal{W}_p (E)\right)$ for all parameters $0 < p < \infty$ and for all separable real Hilbert spaces $E.$ In particular, we show that $\mathcal{W}_p(X)$ is isometrically rigid for all Polish space $X$ whenever $0 1$, by solving Kloeckner's problem affirmatively on the existence of mass-splitting isometries.

A divergence center interpretation of general symmetric Kubo-Ando means, and related weighted multivariate operator means

It is well known that special Kubo-Ando operator means admit divergence center interpretations, moreover, they are also mean squared error estimators for certain metrics on positive definite operators. In this paper we give a divergence center interpretation for every symmetric Kubo-Ando mean. This characterization of the symmetric means naturally leads to a definition of weighted and multivariate versions of a large class of symmetric Kubo-Ando means. We study elementary properties of these weighted multivariate means, and note in particular that in the special case of the geometric mean we recover the weighted $\mathcal{A} \# \mathcal{H}$-mean introduced by Kim, Lawson, and Lim.

Quantum Hellinger distances revisited

This short note aims to study quantum Hellinger distances investigated recently by Bhatia et al. [Lett. Math. Phys. 109 (2019), 1777-1804] with a particular emphasis on barycenters. We introduce the family of generalized quantum Hellinger divergences, that are of the form $ϕ(A,B)=\mathrm{Tr} \left((1-c)A + c B - A σB \right),$ where $σ$ is an arbitrary Kubo-Ando mean, and $c \in (0,1)$ is the weight of $σ.$ We note that these divergences belong to the family of maximal quantum $f$-divergences, and hence are jointly convex and satisfy the data processing inequality (DPI). We derive a characterization of the barycenter of finitely many positive definite operators for these generalized quantum Hellinger divergences. We note that the characterization of the barycenter as the weighted multivariate $1/2$-power mean, that was claimed in the work of Bhatia et al. mentioned above, is true in the case of commuting operators, but it is not correct in the general case.

Isometric study of Wasserstein spaces --- the real line

Recently Kloeckner described the structure of the isometry group of the quadratic Wasserstein space $\mathcal{W}_2\left(\mathbb{R}^n\right)$. It turned out that the case of the real line is exceptional in the sense that there exists an exotic isometry flow. Following this line of investigation, we compute $\mathrm{Isom}\left(\mathcal{W}_p(\mathbb{R})\right)$, the isometry group of the Wasserstein space $\mathcal{W}_p(\mathbb{R})$ for all $p \in [1, \infty)\setminus\{2\}$. We show that $\mathcal{W}_2(\mathbb{R})$ is also exceptional regarding the parameter $p$: $\mathcal{W}_p(\mathbb{R})$ is isometrically rigid if and only if $p\neq 2$. Regarding the underlying space, we prove that the exceptionality of $p=2$ disappears if we replace $\mathbb{R}$ by the compact interval $[0,1]$. Surprisingly, in that case, $\mathcal{W}_p\left([0,1]\right)$ is isometrically rigid if and only if $p\neq1$. Moreover, $\mathcal{W}_1\left([0,1]\right)$ admits isometries that split mass, and $\mathrm{Isom}\left(\mathcal{W}_1\left([0,1]\right)\right)$ cannot be embedded into $\mathrm{Isom}\left(\mathcal{W}_1(\mathbb{R})\right).$

On isometric embeddings of Wasserstein spaces -- the discrete case

The aim of this short paper is to offer a complete characterization of all (not necessarily surjective) isometric embeddings of the Wasserstein space $\mathcal{W}_p(\mathcal{X})$, where $\mathcal{X}$ is a countable discrete metric space and $0<p<\infty$ is any parameter value. Roughly speaking, we will prove that any isometric embedding can be described by a special kind of $\mathcal{X}\times(0,1]$-indexed family of nonnegative finite measures. Our result implies that a typical non-surjective isometric embedding of $\mathcal{W}_p(\mathcal{X})$ splits mass and does not preserve the shape of measures. In order to stress that the lack of surjectivity is what makes things challenging, we will prove alternatively that $\mathcal{W}_p(\mathcal{X})$ is isometrically rigid for all $0<p<\infty$.

Maps on probability measures preserving certain distances --- a survey and some new results

Borel probability measures living on metric spaces are fundamental mathematical objects. There are several meaningful distance functions that make the collection of the probability measures living on a certain space a metric space. We are interested in the description of the structure of the isometries of such metric spaces. We overview some of the recent results of the topic and we also provide some new ones concerning the Wasserstein distance. More specifically, we consider the space of all Borel probability measures on the unit sphere of a Euclidean space endowed with the Wasserstein metric $W_p$ for arbitrary $p \geq 1,$ and we show that the action of a Wasserstein isometry on the set of the Dirac measures is induced by an isometry of the underlying unit sphere.

Jointly convex quantum Jensen divergences

We investigate the quantum Jensen divergences from the viewpoint of joint convexity. It turns out that the set of the functions which generate jointly convex quantum Jensen divergences on positive matrices coincides with the Matrix Entropy Class which has been introduced by Chen and Tropp quite recently in [Electron. J. Probab. 19 (2014), 1-30].

Applications of an intersection formula to dual cones

We give a succinct proof of a duality theorem obtained by Révész in 1991 which concerns extremal quantities related to trigonomertic polynomials. The key tool of our new proof is an intersection formula on dual cones in real Banach spaces. We show another application of this intersection formula which is related to the integral estimates of non-negative positive definite functions.

Connections between centrality and local monotonicity of certain functions on $C^*$-algebras

We introduce a quite large class of functions (including the exponential function and the power functions with exponent greater than one), and show that for any element $f$ of this function class, a self-adjoint element $a$ of a $C^*$-algebra is central if and only if $a \leq b$ implies $f(a) \leq f(b).$ That is, we characterize centrality by local monotonicity of certain functions on $C^*$-algebras. Numerous former results (including works of Ogasawara, Pedersen, Wu, and Molnár) are apparent consequences of our result.

Maps on positive definite operators preserving the quantum $χ_α^2$-divergence

We describe the structure of all bijective maps on the cone of positive definite operators acting on a finite and at least two-dimensional complex Hilbert space which preserve the quantum $χ_α^2$-divergence for some $α\in [0,1]$. We prove that any such transformation is necessarily implemented by either a unitary or an antiunitary operator. Similar results concerning maps on the cone of positive semidefinite operators as well as on the set of all density operators are also derived.

Maps on quantum states preserving Bregman and Jensen divergences

We describe the structure of the bijective transformations on the set of density operators which preserve the Bregman $f$-divergence for an arbitrary differentiable strictly convex function $f.$ Furthermore, we determine the preservers of the Jensen $f$-divergence in the case when the generating function $f$ belongs to a recently introduced function class called Matrix Entropy Class.

Optimal parameter estimation of Pauli channels

The optimal measurement configuration, i.e., the optimal input quantum state and measurement in the form of a POVM with two elements, is investigated in this paper for qubit and generalized Pauli channels. The channel directions are defined as the contracting directions of the channel with an arbitrary fixed basis of Pauli- matrices. In the qubit Pauli channel case with known channel directions it is shown that the optimal configuration that maximizes the Fisher information of the estimated parameters consists of three von Neumann measurements together with pure input states directed to the appropriate channel directions. Extensions of these results for generalized Pauli channels are also given. Furthermore, a computationally efficient estimation method is proposed for estimating the channel directions in the qubit Pauli channel case. The efficiency of this method is illustrated by simulations: it is shown that its variance is of order 1/N, where N is the number of used measurements.

Maps on positive definite matrices preserving Bregman and Jensen divergences

In this paper we determine those bijective maps of the set of all positive definite $n\times n$ complex matrices which preserve a given Bregman divergence corresponding to a differentiable convex function that satisfies certain conditions. We cover the cases of the most important Bregman divergences and present the precise structure of the mentioned transformations. Similar results concerning Jensen divergences and their preservers are also given.

On a problem of Bauschke and Borwein

Consider a differentiable convex function $f: \mathbb{R}^n \supset \mathrm{dom} f \rightarrow \mathbb{R}.$ The induced spectral function $F$ is given by $F=f \circ λ,$ where $λ: \mathbf{M}_n^{sa} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{n}$ is the eigenvalue map. Let us denote by $D_f$ and $D_F$ the Bregman distances associated with $f$ and $F,$ respectively. In the paper "Joint and separate convexity of the Bregman distance" written by H. Bauschke and J. Borwein the following open problem has been suggested. "Is $D_f$ jointly convex if and only if $D_F$ is?" In this short note we provide a negative answer to this question.

Continuous Jordan triple endomorphisms of $\mathbb{P}_2$

We describe the structure of all continuous Jordan triple endomorphisms of the set $\mathbb{P}_2$ of all positive definite $2\times 2$ matrices thus completing a recent result of ours. We also mention an application concerning sorts of surjective generalized isometries on $\mathbb{P}_2$ and, as second application, we complete another former result of ours on the structure of sequential endomorphisms of finite dimensional effect algebras.
