On components of stable connectivity of gradient-like diffeomorphisms of the 2-torus

Gradient-like diffeomorphisms of a closed surface $M^2$ are characterized by a finite hyperbolic limit set and the absence of intersections of invariant manifolds of distinct saddle points. In the case where such diffeomorphisms $f_0, f_1:M^2\to M^2$ are isotopic, they are connected by some arc $\{f_t:M^2\to M^2, t\in [0,1]\}$ in the space of diffeomorphisms. If every diffeomorphism of the arc has a finite limit set and the arc is stable (does not change its qualitative properties under small perturbations) in the space of diffeomorphisms, then $f_0,f_1$ are said to be {\it stably connected}. Thus, the set of isotopic diffeomorphisms splits into components of stable connectivity, of which there may, in general, be infinitely many. For instance, it is known that gradient-like diffeomorphisms of the 2-sphere (both orientation-preserving and orientation-reversing) consist of a countable number of stable connectivity components. Moreover, belonging to a particular component is uniquely determined by the periodic data of the diffeomorphism. In the present paper, we consider gradient-like diffeomorphisms of the 2-torus that are not isotopic to the identity. We establish that the set of such diffeomorphisms splits into a finite number of stable connectivity components. For each isotopy class, we define the periodic data of the diffeomorphism, which uniquely determine membership in a given component.

Status and initial physics performance studies of the MPD experiment at NICA

The Nuclotron-base Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), with commissioning of the facility expected in late 2022. The Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) has been designed to operate at NICA and its components are currently in production. The detector is expected to be ready for data taking with the first beams from NICA. This document provides an overview of the landscape of the investigation of the QCD phase diagram in the region of maximum baryonic density, where NICA and MPD will be able to provide significant and unique input. It also provides a detailed description of the MPD set-up, including its various subsystems as well as its support and computing infrastructures. Selected performance studies for particular physics measurements at MPD are presented and discussed in the context of existing data and theoretical expectations.

Dark-field imaging as a non-invasive method for characterization of whispering gallery modes in microdisk cavities

Whispering gallery mode microdisk cavities fabricated by direct laser writing are studied using dark-field imaging and spectroscopy in the visible spectral range. {Dark-field imaging allows us to directly visualize the spatial intensity distribution of whispering gallery modes. We extract their azimuthal and radial mode indices from dark-field images, and find the axial mode number from the dispersion relation. The scattering spectrum obtained in the confocal arrangement provides information on the density of optical states in the resonator. The proposed technique is a simple non-invasive way to characterize the optical properties of microdisk cavities.

Open Universe Model: Description by Mathieu Functions

A model of the open Universe described by a conformally flat 4-metric is considered. The gravitational equations with a perfect Pascal fluid as a source are reduced to the nonlinear equation of oscillations. It is proposed to consider this equation as the Mathieu equation encompassing some cosmological models. It is shown that the behaviour of the Universe state function is in qualitative accordance with the Big Bang scenario.
