The role of lighter and heavier embedded nanoparticles on the thermal conductivity of SiGe alloys

We have used an atomistic {\it ab initio} approach with no adjustable parameters to compute the lattice thermal conductivity of Si$_{0.5}$Ge$_{0.5}$ with a low concentration of embedded Si or Ge nanoparticles of diameters up to 4.4 nm. Through exact Green's function calculation of the nanoparticle scattering rates, we find that embedding Ge nanoparticles in $\text{Si}_{0.5}\text{Ge}_{0.5}$ provides 20% lower thermal conductivities than embedding Si nanoparticles. This contrasts with the Born approximation which predicts an equal amount of reduction for the two cases, irrespective of the sign of the mass difference. Despite these differences, we find that the Born approximation still performs remarkably well, and it permits investigation of larger nanoparticle sizes, up to 60 nm in diameter, not feasible with the exact approach.

Optimized Tersoff and Brenner empirical potential parameters for lattice dynamics and phonon thermal transport in carbon nanotubes and graphene

We have examined the commonly used Tersoff and Brenner empirical interatomic potentials in the context of the phonon dispersions in graphene. We have found a parameter set for each empirical potential that provides improved fits to some structural data and to the in-plane phonon dispersion data for graphite. These optimized parameter sets yield values of the acoustic phonon velocities that are in better agreement with measured data. They also provide lattice thermal conductivity values in single-walled carbon nanotubes that are considerably improved compared to those obtained from the original parameter sets.

Evidence of Skyrmion excitations about $ν=1$ in n-Modulation Doped Single Quantum Wells by Inter-band Optical Transmission

We observe a dramatic reduction in the degree of spin-polarization of a two-dimensional electron gas in a magnetic field when the Fermi energy moves off the mid-point of the spin-gap of the lowest Landau level, $ν=1$. This rapid decay of spin alignment to an unpolarized state occurs over small changes to both higher and lower magnetic field. The degree of electron spin polarization as a function of $ν$ is measured through the magneto-absorption spectra which distinguish the occupancy of the two electron spin states. The data provide experimental evidence for the presence of Skyrmion excitations where exchange energy dominates Zeeman energy in the integer quantum Hall regime at $ν=1$.
