Testing the double-logarithm asymptotic gluon density in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider

In this paper, we analyze the application of an analytical gluon distribution based on double-asymptotic scaling to the photoproduction of vector mesons in coherent $pp$, $pA$, and $AA$ collisions at LHC energies, using the color dipole formalism. Predictions for the rapidity distribution are presented for $ρ^0$, $J/ ψ$, $ψ(2S)$, and $Υ(1S)$ mesons photoproduction. An analysis of the uncertainties associated with different implementations of the dipole--proton amplitude is performed. The vector meson photoproduction accompanied by electromagnetic dissociation is also analyzed.

Asymptotic gluon density within the color dipole picture in the light of HERA high-precision data

We present an analysis of the most precise set of HERA data within the color dipole formalism, by using an analytical gluon density, based on the double-logarithm approximation of the DGLAP equations in the asymptotic limit of the scaling variable, $σ=\log{(1/x)}\log{(\log{(Q^2/Q_ 0^2)})}\rightarrow \infty$. Fits to data, including charm and bottom quarks are performed and demonstrate the efficiency of the model in describing the reduced cross section, $σ_{r}$, in the wide range $Q^2:(1.5,500)$ GeV$^2$ for two dipole models including parton saturation effects. We also give predictions to $F_{2}^{c\bar{c}}$ , $F_{2}^{b\bar{b}}$ and $F_{L}$, all describing the data reasonably well in the range $Q^2:(2.5,120)$ GeV$^2$. Total cross sections of exclusive photoproduction of $J/ψ$ and $ρ$ are also calculated and successfully compared to HERA data and recent measurements at LHCb.

QCD traveling waves phenomenology revisited

In this paper we review and update the Amaral-Gay Ducati-Betemps-Soyez saturation model, by testing it against the recent H1-ZEUS combined data on deep inelastic scattering, including heavy quarks in the dipole amplitude. We obtain that this model, which is based on traveling wave solutions of the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation and built in the momentum space framework, yields very accurate descriptions of the reduced cross section, $σ_{r}(x,y,Q^{2})$, as well as DIS structure functions such as $F_{2}(x,Q^{2})$ and $F_{L}(x,Q^{2})$, all measured at HERA. Additionally, it provides good descriptions of heavy quark structure functions, $F_{2}^{cc}$ and $F_{2}^{bb}$ at small-$x$ and $Q^{2}\lesssim 60$ GeV$^{2}$. We also use the improved model to make predictions for structure functions to be measured in the near future at LHeC.

Soft Pomeron in light of the LHC correlated data

The LHC has released precise measurements of elastic proton-proton scattering that provide a unique constraint on the asymptotic behavior of the scattering amplitude at high energies. Recent reanalyses of part of these data indicate that the central values of some forward quantities would be different than initially observed. We introduce correlation information between the original and the reanalyzed data sets in a way suitable for a global fitting analysis of all data. The careful treatment of correlated errors leads to much less stringent limits on the $ρ$ uncertainty and sets up the stage for describing the forward data using a scattering amplitude dominated by only crossing-even terms. In the light of these correlated data we determine the parameters of the soft Pomeron from the Regge theory. We use Born-level and eikonalized amplitudes. In the Born-level case we estimate the contribution of the double Pomeron exchange, while in the latter case we investigate the role of the eikonalization in both the one- and two-channel models. The role of the proton-Pomeron vertex form and of the nearest $t$-channel singularity in the Pomeron trajectory receives particular attention. We discuss the implications of our results and present predictions for the total cross section and the $ρ$ parameter in proton-proton collisions at LHC and cosmic ray energies.

Soft diffraction within the QCD color dipole picture

In this work we consider the QCD parton saturation models to describe soft interactions at the high energy limit. The total and elastic cross sections as well as the elastic slope parameter are obtained for proton-proton and pion-proton collisions and compared to recent experimental results. The analyses are done within the color dipole formalism taking into account saturation models which have been tested against DIS data. The main point is that the match between soft and hard interaction occurs in the saturation region which can be described by high density QCD approaches. Discussion is performed on the main theoretical uncertainties associated with calculations.

Exclusive production of pions and the pion distribution amplitude

Considering, as a limit case, an approximately flat pion distribution amplitude, which is determined from the hardest, in momentum space, solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the pion wave function, we compute the pion transition form factor $F_{πγγ^{*}}(Q^{2})$ and the pion form factor $F_π(Q^2)$, taking into account the LO as well as NLO form of the hard coefficient function entering the leading-twist factorization formula. We also compute the exclusive photoproduction of pions pairs at high energies, $γγ\to π^{+}π^{-}$, where perturbative QCD can be used to compute the hard scattering matrix elements. We verify that the existent data for exclusive pion production can be reasonably described as a function of such flat distribution amplitude.

Forward elastic scattering: Dynamical gluon mass and semihard interactions

The role of low-$x$ parton dynamics in dictating the high-energy behavior of forward scattering observables at LHC energies is investigated using a QCD-based model with even-under-crossing amplitude dominance at high-energies. We explore the effects of different sets of pre- and post-LHC fine-tuned parton distributions on the forward quantities $σ_{tot}$ and $ρ$, from $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ scattering in the interval 10 GeV - 13 TeV. We also investigate the role of the leading soft contribution, the low-energy cuttoff, and the energy dependence of the semihard form factor on these observables. We show that in all cases investigated the highly restrictive data on $ρ$ parameter at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV indicate that a crossing-odd component may play a crucial role in forward elastic scattering at the highest energies. In the Regge language an odd-under-crossing object is called Odderon.

Studying low-$x$ structure function models with astrophysical tau neutrinos: double bang, lollipop and sugardaddy topologies

Despite not have been yet identified by the IceCube detector, events generated from $ν_τ$ deep inelastic neutrino scattering in ice with varied topologies, such as double cascades (often called \textit{double bangs}), \textit{lollipops} and \textit{sugardaddies}, constitute a potential laboratory for low-x parton studies. Here we investigate these events, analyzing the effect of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) Parton Distribution Function (PDFs) in the total neutrino--nucleon cross section, as compared with the color dipole formalism, where saturation effects play a major role. Energy deposit profiles in the `bangs' are also analysed in terms of virtual $W$-boson and tauon energy distributions and are found to be crucial in establishing a clear signal for gluon distribution determination at very small $x$. By taking the average (all flavor) neutrino flux ($Φ_ν\sim E_ν^{-2.3}$) into differential cross sections as a function of $τ$ and $W$ energies, we find significant deviations from pure DGLAP parton interactions for neutrino energies already at a few PeV. With these findings one aims at providing not only possible observables to be measured in large volume neutrino detectors in the near future, but also theoretical ways of unraveling QCD dynamics using unintegrated neutrino-nucleon cross sections in the ultrahigh-energy frontier.

Proton-proton forward scattering at the LHC

Recently the TOTEM experiment at the LHC has released measurements at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV of the proton-proton total cross section, $σ_{tot}$, and the ratio of the real to imaginary parts of the forward elastic amplitude, $ρ$. Since then an intense debate on the $C$-parity asymptotic nature of the scattering amplitude was initiated. We examine the proton-proton and the antiproton-proton forward data above 10 GeV in the context of an eikonal QCD-based model, where nonperturbative effects are readily included via a QCD effective charge. We show that, despite an overall satisfactory description of the forward data is obtained by a model in which the scattering amplitude is dominated by only crossing-even elastic terms, there is evidence that the introduction of a crossing-odd term may improve the agreement with the measurements of $ρ$ at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. In the Regge language the dominant even(odd)-under-crossing object is the so called Pomeron (Odderon).

Leading components in forward elastic hadron scattering: Derivative dispersion relations and asymptotic uniqueness

Forward amplitude analyses constitute an important approach in the investigation of the energy dependence of the total hadronic cross-section $σ_{tot}$ and the $ρ$ parameter. The standard picture indicates for $σ_{tot}$ a leading log-squared dependence at the highest c.m. energies, in accordance with the Froissart-Lukaszuk-Martin bound. Beyond this log-squared (L2) leading dependence, other amplitude analyses have considered a log-raised-to-gamma form (L$γ$), with $γ$ as a real free fit parameter. In this case, analytic connections with $ρ$ can be obtained either through dispersion relations (derivative forms), or asymptotic uniqueness (Phragmén-Lindelöff theorems). In this work we present a detailed discussion on the similarities and mainly the differences between the Derivative Dispersion Relation (DDR) and Asymptotic Uniqueness (AU) approaches and results, with focus on the L$γ$ and L2 leading terms. We also develop new Regge-Gribov fits with updated dataset on $σ_{tot}$ and $ρ$ from $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ scattering, in the region 5 GeV-8 TeV. The recent tension between the TOTEM and ATLAS results at 7 TeV and mainly 8 TeV is considered in the data reductions. Our main conclusions are: (1) all fit results present agreement with the experimental data analyzed and the goodness-of-fit is slightly better in case of the DDR approach; (2) by considering only the TOTEM data at the LHC region, the fits with L$γ$ indicate $γ\sim 2.0\pm 0.2$ (AU) and $γ\sim 2.3\pm 0.1$ (DDR); (3) by including the ATLAS data the fits provide $γ\sim 1.9\pm 0.1$ (AU) and $γ\sim 2.2\pm 0.2$ (DDR); (4) in the formal and practical contexts, the DDR approach is more adequate for the energy interval investigated than the AU approach. A review on the analytic results for $σ_{tot}$ and $ρ$ from the Regge-Gribov, DDR and AU approaches is presented.

The non-diffractive pp cross-section and Survival Probabilities at LHC

We present an estimate of survival probability from an eikonal mini- jet model implemented with a proposal for soft gluon resummation to all orders. We compare it with experimental data for diffractive di-jet production from LHC experiments, CMS and ATLAS, both at LO and NLO order.

Bounds on the rise of total cross section from LHC7 and LHC8 data

Recent measurements of the proton-proton total cross section $σ_{tot}$ at 7 and 8 TeV by the TOTEM and ATLAS Collaborations are characterized by some discrepant values: the TOTEM data suggest a rise of the cross section with the energy faster than the ATLAS data. Attempting to quantify these different behaviors, we develop new analytical fits to $σ_{tot}$ and $ρ$ data from $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ scattering in the energy region 5 GeV - 8 TeV. The dataset comprises all the accelerator data below 7 TeV and we consider three ensembles by adding: either only the TOTEM data (T), or only the ATLAS data (A), or both sets (T+A). For the purposes, we use our previous RRPL$γ$ parametrization for $σ_{tot}(s)$, consisting of two Reggeons (RR), one critical Pomeron (P) and a leading log-raised-to-gamma (L$γ$) contribution (with $γ$ as a free fit parameter), analytically connected to $ρ(s)$ through singly-subtracted derivative dispersion relations and energy scale fixed at the physical threshold. The data reductions with ensembles T and A present good agreement with the experimental data analyzed and cannot be distinguished on statistical grounds. The quality of the fit is not as good with ensemble T+A. The fit results provide $γ\sim 2.3 \pm 0.1$ (T), $2.0 \pm 0.2$ (A), $2.1 \pm 0.2$ (T+A), with $χ^2/\mathrm{DOF} \sim 1.07$ (T), $1.09$ (A), $1.14$ (T+A), suggesting extrema bounds for $γ$ given by 1.8 and 2.4. Fits with $γ= 2$ (fixed) are also developed and discussed.

Exploring central opacity and asymptotic scenarios in elastic hadron scattering

In the absence of a global description of the experimental data on elastic and soft diffractive scattering from the first principles of QCD, model-independent analyses may provide useful phenomenological insights for the development of the theory in the soft sector. With that in mind, we present an empirical study on the energy dependence of the ratio $X$ between the elastic and total cross sections; a quantity related to the evolution of the hadronic central opacity. The dataset comprises all the experimental information available on proton-proton and antiproton-proton scattering in the c.m. energy interval 5 GeV - 8 TeV. Generalizing previous works, we discuss four model-independent analytical parameterizations for $X$, consisting of sigmoid functions composed with elementary functions of the energy and three distinct asymptotic scenarios: either the standard black disk limit or scenarios above or below that limit. Our two main conclusions are the following: (1) although consistent with the experimental data, the black disk does not represent an unique solution; (2) the data reductions favor a semi-transparent scenario, with asymptotic average value for the ratio $\bar{X}$ = 0.30 $\pm$ 0.12. In this case, within the uncertainty, the asymptotic regime may already be reached around 1000 TeV. We present a comparative study of the two scenarios, including predictions for the inelastic channel (diffraction dissociation) and the ratio associated with the total cross-section and the elastic slope. Details on the selection of our empirical ansatz for $X$ and physical aspects related to a change of curvature in this quantity at 80 - 100 GeV, indicating the beginning of a saturation effect, are also presented and discussed.

Soft edge of hadron scattering and mini-jet models for the total and inelastic pp cross-sections at LHC and beyond

We show that the onset and rise of QCD mini-jets provide the dynamical mechanism behind the appearance of a soft edge in pp collisions around ISR energies and thus such a soft edge is built in our mini-jet model with soft gluon resummation. Here the model is optimized for LHC at $\sqrt{s} = 7, 8 TeV$ and predictions made for higher LHC and cosmic ray energies. Further, we provide a phenomenological picture to discuss the breakup of the total cross-section into its elastic, uncorrelated and correlated inelastic pieces in the framework of a one-channel eikonal function.

Fine structure of the diffraction cone: from ISR to the LHC

Following earlier findings, we argue that the low-$|t|$ structure in the elastic diffractive cone, recently reported by the TOTEM Collaboration at $8$ TeV, is a consequence of the threshold singularity required by $t-$channel unitarity, such as revealed earlier at the ISR. By using simple Regge-pole models, we analyze the available data on the $pp$ elastic differential cross section in a wide range of c.m. energies, namely those from ISR to LHC8, obtaining good fits of all datasets. This study hints at the fact that the non-exponential behaviour observed at LHC8 is a recurrence of the low-$|t|$ "break" phenomenon, observed in the seventies at ISR, being induced by the presence of a two-pion loop singularity in the Pomeron trajectory.

Updating an empirical analysis on the proton's central opacity and asymptotia

We present an updated empirical analysis on the ratio of the elastic (integrated) to the total cross section in the c.m. energy interval from 5 GeV to 8 TeV. As in a previous work, we use a suitable analytical parametrization for that ratio (depending on only four free fit parameters) and investigate three asymptotic scenarios: either the black disk limit or scenarios above or below that limit. The dataset includes now the datum at 7 TeV, recently reported by the ATLAS Collaboration. Our analysis favors, once more, a scenario below the black disk, providing an asymptotic ratio consistent with the rational value 1/3, namely a gray disk limit. Upper bounds for the ratio of the diffractive (dissociative) to the inelastic cross section are also presented.

p-air production cross-section and uncorrelated mini-jets processes in pp-scattering

For the p-air production cross-section, we use a Glauber formalism which inputs the pp inelastic cross-section from a mini-jet model embedded in a single-channel eikonal expression, which provides the needed contribution of uncorrelated processes. It is then shown that current LO parton density functions for the pp mini-jet cross-sections, with a rise tempered by collinearity induced by soft gluon re-summation, are well suited to reproduce recent cosmic ray results. By comparing results for GRV, MRST72 and MSTW parametrizations, we estimate the uncertainty related to the low-x behavior of these densities.

Asymptotic Scenarios for the Proton's Central Opacity: An Empirical Study

We present a model-independent analysis of the experimental data on the ratio $X$ between the elastic and total cross-sections from $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ scattering in the c.m. energy interval 5 GeV - 8 TeV. Using a novel empirical parametrization for that ratio as a function of the energy and based on theoretical and empirical arguments, we investigate three distinct asymptotic scenarios: either the black-disk (BD) limit or scenarios above and below that limit. Our analysis favors a scenario below the BD, with asymptotic ratio $X = 0.36 \pm 0.08$.
