Unifying Logarithmic and Factorial Behavior in High Energy Scattering

The elegant instanton calculus of Lipatov and others used to find factorially-divergent behavior (g^N * N!) for N*g >> 1 in g*phi^4 perturbation theory is strictly only applicable when all external momenta vanish; a description of high-energy 2 --> N scattering with N massive particles is beyond the scope of such techniques. On the other hand, a standard multiperipheral treatment of scattering with its emphasis on leading logarithms gives a reasonable picture of high-energy behavior but does not result in factorial divergences. Using a straightforward graphical analysis we present a unified picture of both these phenomena as they occur in the two-particle total cross section of g*phi^4 theory. We do not attempt to tame the unitarity violations associated with either multiperipheralism or the Lipatov technique.

Astrophysical Searches For Exotic Phenomena In Ultrahigh Energy Neutrino-Nucleon Scattering

We investigate the potential of near-future neutrino telescopes like NESTOR for searches for exotic processes in ultrahigh energy neutrino-quark scattering. (NESTOR is the acronym for NEutrinos, from Supernovae and TeV sources, Ocean Range ... a water Cherenkov detector to be constructed in the Mediterranean off the coast of Greece). We consider signatures such as muon bundles and/or contained cascades from the nonperturbative production of multiple weak gauge bosons in the Standard Model, compositeness and leptoquark production.

Higgs Boson Interference in $γγ\rightarrow W^+W^-$

We study interference effects between resonant and nonresonant amplitudes for the $γγ\rightarrow W^+ W^-$ process at a backscattered photon-photon collider. We show that a Higgs boson with $M_H$ > 200 GeV is manifest as a resonant dip in the $W^+W^-$ invariant mass spectrum and we investigate its statistical significance.

Phenomenology of Multi-W Processes in Cosmic Rays

We report on a study of the potential of various cosmic ray physics experiments to search for Standard Model processes involving the nonperturbative production of O(30) weak gauge bosons. Whereas present and near-future experiments are insensitive to proton-induced processes, neutrino-induced processes give rise to promising signatures and rates in AMANDA, DUMAND, MACRO and NESTOR provided that a cosmic neutrino flux exists at levels suggested by recent models of active galactic nuclei. The Fly's Eye currently constrains the largest region of parameter space characterizing multi-W phenomena.

Multiple Muons From Neutrino-Initiated Multi-W(Z) Production

Current underground detectors can search for multiple muons from multi-W(Z) production initiated by ultrahigh energy neutrinos from active galactic nuclei. O($μ$b) cross sections give rise to downward going muon bundles whose features differ from those of atmospheric muon bundles.

Prospects for Multiple Weak Gauge Boson Production at Supercollider Energies

We discuss the prospects for observing multiple weak gauge boson production at the SSC and LHC. We summarize conventional perturbative cross sections for processes involving 1-6 final state weak gauge bosons and compare them with more speculative scenarios including 1) a toy model of a strongly interacting Higgs sector patterned after hadronic multipion production and 2) the nonperturbative production of O(30) weak gauge bosons in a weakly coupled gauge sector.

Cosmic Ray Signatures of Multi-W Processes

We explore the discovery potential of cosmic ray physics experiments for Standard Model processes involving the nonperturbative production of O(30) weak gauge bosons. We demonstrate an experimental insensitivity to proton-induced processes and emphasize the importance of neutrino-induced processes. The Fly's Eye currently constrains the largest region of parameter space characterizing multi-W phenomena if a cosmic neutrino flux exists at levels suggested by recent models of active galactic nuclei. MACRO (DUMAND) can constrain or observe additional regions by searching for 1-100 (1-10) characteristic near-vertical (near-horizontal) spatially compact energetic muon bundles per year.

Multiple $W_L$ Production from Inelastic $W_L W_L$ Scattering at $\sqrt{\hat{s}} \gg M_H$

We explore the inelastic production of multiple longitudinal weak bosons as a manifestation of a strongly interacting symmetry breaking sector. By analogy with QCD, final states with large multiplicities are expected to occur not far above the energy scale of the lowest resonances of the underlying strong theory. We consider the feasibility of observing such phenomena in the environment of a very high energy hadron collider.

The Perturbative Onset of Multiparticle Production in Weak Interactions

We use perturbation theory to estimate the energy scale beyond which multiparticle final states become a dominant feature of high energy weak interactions. Using estimates from a weak parton model and comparing two, three and four body final states we deduce that multiparticle states become important at energy scales in the range 10**7 - 10**9 GeV.
