Decoupling of the leading contribution in the discrete BFKL Analysis of High-Precision HERA Data

We analyse, in NLO, the physical properties of the discrete eigenvalue solution for the BFKL equation. We show that a set of eigenfunctions with positive eigenvalues, ω, together with a small contribution from a continuum of eigenfunctions with negative ω, provide an excellent description of high-precision HERA F_2 data in the region, x<0.001, Q^2 > 6 GeV^2. The phases of the eigenfunctions can be obtained from a simple parametrisation of the pomeron spectrum, which has a natural motivation within BFKL. The data analysis shows that the first eigenfunction decouples completely or almost completely from the proton. This suggests that there exist an additional ground state, which is naturally saturated and may have the properties of the soft pomeron.

Two aspects of the Regge limit in QCD: Double Logs in Exclusive observables and Infrared Effects in Cross Sections

Two relevant points related to the application of the BFKL formalism to phenomenology are discussed. First, we have presented a set of observables characterizing multi-jet configurations event by event (average transverse momentum, average azimuthal angle, average ratio of jet rapidities) which can be used to find distinct signals of BFKL dynamics at the LHC. A numerical analysis has been shown using the Monte Carlo event generator BFKLex, modified to include higher-order collinear corrections in addition to the transverse-momentum implementation of the NLO kernel. We require to have two tagged forward/backward jets in the final state. Second, the structure of the BFKL equation changes if infrared boundary conditions are imposed when considering the running of the coupling. The cut in the complex angular momentum plane becomes an infinite series of Regge poles. Integrating along a contour off the real axis we find a strong dependence of the intercepts and collinear regions on the choice of the boundary conditions. The mean transverse scales dominant in the gluon ladder increase. This could have interesting phenomenological consequences.

The Behaviour of the Green Function for the BFKL Pomeron with Running Coupling

We analyse here in LO the physical properties of the Green function solution for the BFKL equation. We show that the solution obeys the orthonormality conditions in the physical region and fulfills the completeness requirements. The unintegrated gluon density is shown to consists of a set of few poles with parameters which could be determined by comparison with the DIS data of high precision.

NLO Leptoquark Production and Decay: The Narrow-Width Approximation and Beyond

We study the leptoquark model of Buchmüller, Rückl and Wyler, focusing on a particular type of scalar ($R_2$) and vector ($U_1$) leptoquark. The primary aim is to perform the calculations for leptoquark production and decay at next-to-leading order (NLO) to establish the importance of the NLO contributions and, in particular, to determine how effective the narrow-width-approximation (NWA) is at NLO. For both the scalar and vector leptoquarks it is found that the NLO contributions are large, with the larger corrections occurring for the case vector leptoquarks. For the scalar leptoquark it is found that the NWA provides a good approximation for determining the resonant peak, however the NWA is not as effective for the vector leptoquark. For both the scalar and vector leptoquarks there are large contributions away from the resonant peak, which are missing from the NWA results, and these make a significant difference to the total cross-section.

Order-by-order Analytic Solution to the BFKL Equation

We propose a regularization of the BFKL equation which allows for its solution in each order of perturbation theory by means of a sum over multiple poles. This sum can be presented in a rather simple formula for the Fourier transform in the azimuthal angle of the gluon Green function. In order to test our method, we have compared a few orders in the expansion to previous results by Del Duca, Dixon, Duhr and Pennington, finding agreement. Our formalism is general and can be applied to other, more complicated, kernels.

BFKL Evolution as a Communicator Between Small and Large Energy Scales

We analyze, in leading and next to leading order of BFKL, a possible influence of Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) effects on the structure of the discrete pomeron states. We show that the eigenvalues of the states which contribute significantly to the gluon density in the observable region are substantially modified by BSM effects irrespective of the assumptions about the infrared boundary conditions. We also develop a physically motivated heuristic model of the infrared boundary condition which determines the gluon structure function and argue, using this model, that the analysis of the present and future low-$x$ data could allow the detection of a supersymmetry scale in the multi-TeV range.

On the top-antitop invariant mass spectrum at the LHC from a Higgs boson signal perspective

We investigate the effect of one-loop corrections of ${\cal O}(α_S^2α_W)$ on the $t\bar t$ invariant mass spectrum at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in presence of both resonant and non-resonant Higgs boson effects. We show that corrections of ${\cal O}(α_S^2α_W)$ involving a non-resonant Higgs boson are comparable to or even larger than those involving interference with the s-channel resonant Higgs boson amplitude and that both of these are subleading with respect to all other (non-Higgs) diagrams through that order. We also compute the contribution through ${\cal O}(α_S^2α_W^2)$ of resonant Higgs boson production (i.e. Higgs production via $gg$ fusion) as well as the pure QCD ones of ${\cal O}(α_S^3)$. Altogether, we show that the well known peak-dip structure of the $M_{t\bar t}$ spectrum emerging from interference effects between the $t,u$-channel $gg$-induced Leading Order (LO) QCD diagrams and the one due to a Higgs boson in s-channel via $gg$-fusion is drastically swamped by the remainder of the terms of ${\cal O}(α_S^2α_W)$ discussed above.

Indirect Evidence for New Physics at the 10 TeV Scale

We show that the supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model modifies the structure of the low lying BFKL discrete pomeron states (DPS) which give a sizable contribution to the gluon structure function in the HERA x and Q2 region. The comparison of the gluon density, determined within DPS with N=1 SUSY, with data favours a supersymmetry scale of the order of 10 TeV. The DPS method described here could open a new window to the physics beyond the Standard Model.

Using HERA Data to Determine the Infrared Behaviour of the BFKL Amplitude

We determine the infrared behaviour of the BFKL forward amplitude for gluon-gluon scattering. Our approach, based on the discrete pomeron solution, leads to an excellent description of the new combined inclusive HERA data at low values of x (<0.01) and at the same time determines the unintegrated gluon density inside the proton, for squared transverse momenta of the gluon less than 100 GeV^2. The phases of this amplitude are sensitive to the non-perturbative gluonic dynamics and could be sensitive to the presence of Beyond-the-Standard-Model particles at very high energies.

Full one-loop electroweak corrections to e+e- to 3 jets at linear colliders

We describe the impact of the full one-loop electroweak terms of O(alpha_s alpha_EM^3) entering the electron-positron into three-jet cross-section from sqrt(s)=M_Z to TeV scale energies. We include both factorisable and non-factorisable virtual corrections and photon bremsstrahlung. Their importance for the measurement of alpha_S from jet rates and shape variables is explained qualitatively and illustrated quantitatively, also in presence of b-tagging.

We describe the impact of the full one-loop EW terms of O(alpha_s alpha_EM^3) entering the electron-positron into three-jet cross-section from \sqrt{s}=M_Z to TeV scale energies. We include both factorisable and non-factorisable virtual corrections, photon bremsstrahlung but not the real emission of W and Z bosons. Their importance for the measurement of alpha_S from jet rates and shape variables is explained qualitatively and illustrated quantitatively.

One-loop Electro-Weak Corrections to the Event Orientation of e+e- into 3 jet Processes

We compute the full one-loop Electro-Weak (EW) contributions of O(alpha_S alpha_EM^3) entering the electron-positron into a quark-antiquark pair plus one gluon cross section at the Z peak and LC energies in presence of polarisation of the initial state and by retaining the event orientation of the final state. We include both factorisable and non-factorisable virtual corrections, photon bremsstrahlung but not the real emission of W^\pm and Z bosons. Their importance for the final state orientation is illustrated for beam polarisation setups achieved at SLC and foreseen at ILC and CLIC.

One-loop Electro-Weak Corrections to Three-jet Observables of b-quarks in e+e- Annihilations

We compute the full one-loop EW contributions of O(α_S alpha_EM^3) entering the electron-positron into two b-quarks and one gluon cross section at the Z peak and LC energies. We include both factorisable and non-factorisable virtual corrections, photon bremsstrahlung but not the real emission of W^\pm and Z bosons. Their importance for the measurement of alpha_S from jet rates and shape variables is explained qualitatively and illustrated quantitatively. Their impact on the forward-backward asymmetry is also analysed.

Evidence for the Discrete Asymptotically-Free BFKL Pomeron from HERA Data

We show that the next-to-leading-order renormalization-group-improved asymptotically-free BFKL Pomeron provides a good fit to HERA data on virtual photoproduction at small x and large Q^2. The leading discrete Pomeron pole reproduces qualitatively the Q^2 dependence of the HERA data for x ~10^{-3}, and a fit using the three leading discrete singularities reproduces quantitatively the Q^2 and x dependence of the HERA data for x < 10^{-2}. This fit fixes the phase for all the BFKL wavefunctions at a chosen infrared scale.

Weak corrections to gluon-induced top-antitop hadro-production

We calculate purely weak virtual one-loop corrections to the production cross section of top-antitop pairs at the Large Hadron Collider via the gluon-gluon fusion subprocess. We find very small negative corrections to the total cross section, of order -0.6%, but significantly larger effects to the differential one, particularly in the transverse momentum distribution, of order -5% to -10% (in observable regions). In case of parity-conserving spin-asymmetries of the final state, $α_{\mathrm{S}}^2α_{\mathrm{W}}$ corrections are typically of a few negative percent, with the exception of positive and negative peaks at $+12%$ and -5%, respectively (near where the tree-level predictions change sign), while those arising in parity-violating asymmetries (which are identically zero in QCD) are typically at a level of a few permille.
