Magneto-optical Control of Ordering Kinetics and Vacancy Behavior in Fe-Al Thin Films Quenched by Laser

One of issues arising in materials science is a behavior of non-equilibrium point defects in the atomic lattice, which defines the rates of chemical reactions and relaxation processes as well as affects the physical properties of solids. It is previously theoretically predicted that melting and rapid solidification of metals and alloys provides a vacancy concentration in the quenched material, which can be comparable to that quantity at the point of melting. Here, the vacancy behavior is studied exerimentally in thin films of the near equiatomic Fe-Al alloy subjected to nanosecond laser annealing with intensities up to film ablation. The effects of laser irradiation are studied by monitoring magneto-optically the ordering kinetics in the alloy at the very ablation edge, within a narrow (micron-scale) ring-shaped region around the ablation zone. Quantitatively, the vacancy supersaturation in the quenched alloy has been estimated by fitting a simulated temporal evolution of the long-range chemical order to the obtained experimental data. Laser quenching (LQ) of alloys and single-element materials would be a tool for obtaining novel phase states within a small volume of the crystal.

Giant interfacial induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in polycrystalline Co/Pt multilayers

Multilayers of heavy metals and ferromagnets are the basis for the formation of various structures with inhomogeneous chiral magnetic distributions. The most informative method for studying magnetic states in such structures with a high spatial resolution is Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (L-TEM). Here, we report on the observation of chiral Néel domain walls by means of L-TEM in Co/Pt multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We explain the existence of chiral Néel internal structure due to the overcritical, giant interfacial induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Our results are confirmed by micromagnetic modeling, which allows taking into account the effect of local inhomogeneity of the magnetic anisotropy of polycrystalline films on formation of spin textures.

Effect of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on polarized neutrons reflection

The antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in noncentrosymmetric systems leads to various nonuniform chiral magnetic textures. Polarized neutron scattering is a powerful method for investigation such chiral distributions. The most used technique is a small-angle neutrons scattering (SANS). Multilayered magnetic films with the interface induced DMI (iDMI) can't be investigated by SANS because of their small volume. The appropriate technique is a polarized neutron reflectometry. Within the framework of the continuum theory of micromagnetics, we explore the impact of the iDMI on the polarized neutrons reflection from multilayers with random magnetic anisotropy. It is shown that the iDMI gives rise to a polarization-dependent asymmetric term in the reflection.

Diode effect in the lateral spin valve

We propose a possible experimental setup for nonreciprocal electron transport in a lateral spin valve due to noncoplanar distribution of magnetic moment (and field) in the system. Some metals (Al, Cu) and semiconductors (GaAs, InSb etc.) demonstrate spin accumulation even at room temperatures due to large spin flip lengths (0.3--2.0 $μm$). The Hanle precession was observed in lateral spin valves based on such materials and two parallel magnetic electrodes. We provide theoretical estimations which show that the nonreciprocal effect in a configuration with non-parallel magnetic electrodes is of the same order of value as the effect that arise due to Hanle precession. This makes it possible to observe the nonreciprocal electron transport as a manifestation of the noncommutativity of spin-1/2 algebra for them in the proposed system. Such property of noncoplanar magnetic system has a potential of application in a noncoplanar type of spintronic devices.

Studying of the interlayer interaction in magnetic multilayers (FM/I/FM) measuring the FMR peak asymmetry

We experimentally study the interlayer interaction in a magnetic multilayer system ferromagnet/insulator/ferromagnet with different spacer thickness. We demonstrate that the sign and the magnitude of the interaction can be deduced from the FMR peak shape rather than from the FMR peak shift. The proposed technique allows studying the interlayer interaction using a single sample (without a reference sample for comparison).

Nonreciprocal transmission of neutrons through the noncoplanar magnetic system

We report on observation of the time reversal symmetry breaking in unpolarized neutrons scattering experiment. Neutron transmittivity through the system consisting of two magnetic mirrors placed in an external magnetic field is measured. Time reversal symmetry holds for coplanar magnetic configuration, meaning that transmitted intensity does not change when interchanging neutron source and detector. Contrarily, for noncoplanar magnetic configuration the time reversal symmetry breaks down. In this case the transmitted intensity changes when interchanging the source and detector. The observed time reversal symmetry breaking is the consequence of the one of the most fundamental properties of quantum mechanics, namely the non-commutativity of spin algebra.
