On thermal fluctuations in quantum magnets

The effect of thermal fluctuations on the dynamics of a gapped quantum magnet is studied using inelastic neutron scattering on copper nitrate, a model material for the one-dimensional (1D) bond alternating Heisenberg chain, combined with theoretical and numerical analysis. We observe and interpret the thermally induced central peak due to intraband scattering as well as the thermal development of an asymmetric continuum of scattering. We relate this asymmetric line broadening to hard core constraints and quasi-particle interactions. Our findings are a counter example to recent assertions of universality of line broadening in 1D systems and are to be considered as a new paradigm of behaviour, applicable to a broad range of quantum systems.

A study of the quantum classical crossover in the spin dynamics of the 2D S=5/2 antiferromagnet Rb2MnF4: neutron scattering, computer simulations, and analytic theories

We report comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic excitations in the 2D spin-5/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet Rb2MnF4 as a function of temperature from deep in the Neel ordered phase up to paramagnetic, 0.13 < kBT/4JS < 1.4. Well defined spin-waves are found for wave-vectors larger than the inverse correlation length $η^{-1}$ for temperatures up to near the Curie-Weiss temperature, $Θ_{CW}$. For wave-vectors smaller than $η^{-1}$, relaxational dynamics occurs. The observed renormalization of spin-wave energies, and evolution of excitation line-shapes, with increasing temperature are quantitatively compared with finite-temperature spin-wave theory, and computer simulations for classical spins. Random phase approximation calculations provide a good description of the low-temperature renormalisation of spin-waves. In contrast, lifetime broadening calculated using the first Born approximation shows, at best, modest agreement around the zone boundary at low temperatures. Classical dynamics simulations using an appropriate quantum-classical correspondence were found to provide a good description of the intermediate- and high-temperature regimes over all wave-vector and energy scales, and the crossover from quantum to classical dynamics observed around $Θ_{CW}/S$, where the spin S=5/2. A characterisation of the data over the whole wave-vector/energy/temperature parameter space is given. In this, $T^2$ behaviour is found to dominate the wave-vector and temperature dependence of the line widths over a large parameter range, and no evidence of hydrodynamic behaviour or dynamical scaling behaviour found within the accuracy of the data sets.

Nature of the spin dynamics and 1/3 magnetization plateau in azurite

We present a specific heat and inelastic neutron scattering study in magnetic fields up into the 1/3 magnetization plateau phase of the diamond chain compound azurite Cu$_3$(CO$_3$)$_2$(OH)$_2$. We establish that the magnetization plateau is a dimer-monomer state, {\it i.e.}, consisting of a chain of $S = 1/2$ monomers, which are separated by $S = 0$ dimers on the diamond chain backbone. The effective spin couplings $J_{mono}/k_B = 10.1(2)$ K and $J_{dimer}/k_B = 1.8(1)$ K are derived from the monomer and dimer dispersions. They are associated to microscopic couplings $J_1/k_B = 1(2)$ K, $J_2/k_B = 55(5)$ K and a ferromagnetic $J_3/k_B = -20(5)$ K, possibly as result of $d_{z^2}$ orbitals in the Cu-O bonds providing the superexchange pathways.

Patterning of sodium ions and the control of electrons in sodium cobaltate

NaxCoO2 has emerged as a material of exceptional scientific interest due to the potential for thermoelectric applications, and because the strong interplay between the magnetic and superconducting properties has led to close comparisons with the physics of the high-Tc cuprates. The density, x, of the sodium in the intercalation layers can be altered electrochemically, directly changing the number of conduction electrons on triangular Co layers. Recent electron diffraction measurements reveal a kaleidoscope of Na+ ion patterns as a function of concentration. Here we use single-crystal neutron diffraction supported by numerical simulations to determine the long-range three-dimensional superstructures of these ions. We show that the sodium ordering and its associated distortion field are governed by pure electrostatics, and the organizational principle is the stabilization of charge droplets that order long range at some simple fractional fillings. Our results provide a good starting point to understand the electronic properties in terms of a Hubbard Hamiltonian taking into account the electrostatic potential from the Na superstructures. The resulting depth of potential wells in the Co layer is greater than the single-particle hopping kinetic energy. As a consequence, holes occupy preferentially the lowest potential regions and, therefore, the Na+ ion patterning plays a decisive role in the transport and magnetic properties.

Formation of a Nematic Fluid at High Fields in Sr3Ru2O7

In principle, a complex assembly of strongly interacting electrons can self-organise into a wide variety of collective states, but relatively few such states have been identified in practice. We report that, in the close vicinity of a metamagnetic quantum critical point, high purity Sr3Ru2O7 possesses a large magnetoresistive anisotropy, consistent with the existence of an electronic nematic fluid. We discuss a striking phenomenological similarity between our observations and those made in high purity two-dimensional electron fluids in GaAs devices.

Magnetic Excitation Spectrum of the Square Lattice S=1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet K2V3O8

We have explored the magnetic excitation spectrum of the S=1/2 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet, K2V3O8 using both triple-axis and time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. The long-wavelength spin waves are consistent with the previously determined Hamiltonian for this material. A small energy gap of 72+/-9 micro-eV is observed at the antiferromagnetic zone center and the near-neighbor exchange constant is determined to be 1.08+/-0.03 meV. A finite ferromagnetic interplanar coupling is observed along the crystallographic c-axis with a magnitude of Jc=-0.0036+/-0.006 meV. However, upon approaching the zone boundary, the observed excitation spectrum deviates significantly from the expectation of linear spin wave theory resulting in split modes at the (pi/2,pi/2) zone boundary point. The effects of magnon-phonon interaction, orbital degrees of freedom, multimagnon scattering, and dilution/site randomness are considered in the context of the mode splitting. Unfortunately, no fully satisfactory explanation of this phenomenon is found and further theoretical and experimental work is needed.

One- and Two-Triplon Spectra of a Cuprate Ladder

We have performed inelastic neutron scattering on the near ideal spin-ladder compound La4Sr10Cu24O41, which will serve as a model system for the investigation of doped ladders. A key feature in the analysis was the separation of one-triplon and two-triplon scattering contributions due to an antiphase rung modulation. This enabled extraction of the one-triplon dispersion which has a spin gap of 26.4+/-0.3 meV, and for the first time two-triplon scattering is clearly observed. The exchange constants are determined by fitting the data to be Jleg=186 meV and Jrung=124 meV along the leg and the rung respectively. In addition to the surprisingly large difference between Jleg and Jrung a substantial ring exchange of Jcyc=31 meV was confirmed.

On the Ordering of Na$^+$ Ions in Na$_x$CoO$_2$

The influence of electrostatic interactions on the ordering of sodium ions in Na$_x$CoO$_2$ is studied theoretically through Monte-Carlo simulations. For large $x$ small di- or tri-vacancy clusters are stable with respect to isolated Na vacancies. At commensurate fillings these small clusters order in triangular superstructures. These results agree with recent electron diffraction data at $x=1/2$ and 3/4. We have performed neutron Laüe diffraction experiments at higher $x$, which confirm the predictions of this simple model. The consequences on the properties of the electronic charges in the Co layers are discussed.

2D Ferromagnetism in the High-Tc Analogue Cs_2AgF_4

Although the precise mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity in the layered cuprates remains unknown, it is generally thought that strong 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnetism combined with disruptive hole doping is an essential aspect of the phenomenon. Intensive studies of other layered 3d transition metal systems have greatly extended our understanding of strongly correlated electron states, but to date have failed to show strong 2D antiferromagnetism or high-Tc superconductivity. For this reason the largely unexplored 4d^9 Ag^II fluorides, which are structurally and perhaps magnetically similar to the 3d^9 Cu^II cuprates, merit close study. Here we present a comprehensive study of magnetism in the layered Ag^II fluoride Cs_2AgF_4, using magnetic susceptometry, neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. We find that this material is well described as a 2D Heisenberg ferromagnet, in sharp contrast to the high-Tc cuprates. The exchange constant J is the largest known for any material of this type. We suggest that orbital ordering may be the origin of the ferromagnetism we observe in this material.

Magnetic excitations in {Mo72Fe30}

We report cold-neutron inelastic neutron scattering measurements on deuterated samples of the giant polyoxomolybdate magnetic molecule {Mo72Fe30}. The 30 s = 5/2 Fe+3 ions occupy the vertices of an icosidodecahedron, and interact via antiferromagnetic nearest neighbor coupling. The measurements reveal a band of magnetic excitations near E ~ 0.6 meV. The spectrum broadens and shifts to lower energy as the temperature is increased, and also is strongly affected by magnetic fields. The results can be interpreted within the context of an effective three-sublattice spin Hamiltonian.

Two-magnon excitations observed by neutron scattering in the two-dimensional spin-5/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet Rb2MnF4

The low-temperature magnetic excitations of the two-dimensional spin-5/2 square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet Rb2MnF4 have been probed using pulsed inelastic neutron scattering. In addition to dominant sharp peaks identified with one-magnon excitations, a relatively weak continuum scattering is also observed at higher energies. This is attributed to neutron scattering by pairs of magnons and the observed intensities are consistent with predictions of spin wave theory.

Longitudinal Magnetic Dynamics and Dimensional Crossover in the Quasi-One-Dimensional, Spin-1/2, Heisenberg Antiferromagnet KCuF3

The spin dynamics of coupled spin-1/2, antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains is predicted to exhibit a novel longitudinal mode at low energies and temperatures below the Neel temperature. This mode is a dimensional crossover effect and reveals the presence of a limited amount of long-range antiferromagnetic order co-existing with quantum fluctuations. In this paper the existence of such a mode is confirmed in the model material KCuF3 using polarized and unpolarized inelastic neutron scattering and the longitudinal polarization of the mode is definitively established. The lineshape is broadened suggesting a reduced lifetime due to decay into spin-waves. In addition the data shows evidence of continuum scattering with a lower edge greater than the longitudinal mode energy. A detailed comparison is made with theoretical predictions and experimental work on other model materials.

Quantum criticality and universal scaling of a quantum antiferromagnet

Quantum effects dominate the behaviour of many diverse materials. Of particular current interest are those systems in the vicinity of a quantum critical point (QCP). Their physical properties are predicted to reflect those of the nearby QCP with universal features independent of the microscopic details. The prototypical QCP is the Luttinger liquid (LL) which is of relevance to many quasi-one-dimensional materials. The magnetic material KCuF3 realizes an array of weakly-coupled spin chains (or LLs) and thus lies close to but not exactly at the Luttinger liquid quantum critical point. By using inelastic neutron scattering we have collected a complete data set of the magnetic correlations of KCuF3 as a function of momentum, energy, and temperature. The LL description is found to be valid over an extensive range of these parameters, and departures from this behaviour at high and low energies and temperatures have been identified and explained.

Three-Dimensional Spin Fluctuations in Na0.75CoO2

We report polarized- and unpolarized-neutron scattering measurements of magnetic excitations in single-crystal Na0.75CoO2. The data confirm ferromagnetic correlations within the cobalt-layers and reveal antiferromagnetic correlations perpendicular to the layers, consistent with an A-type antiferromagnetic ordering. The magnetic modes propagating perpendicular to the layers are sharp, and reach a maximum energy of ~12 meV. From a minimal spin wave model, containing only nearest-neighbour Heisenberg exchange interactions, we estimate the inter- and intra-layer exchange constants to be 12.2 +/- 0.5 meV and -6 +/- 2 meV, respectively. We conclude that the magnetic fluctuations in Na0.75CoO2 are highly three-dimensional.

Ferromagnetic in-plane spin fluctuations in NaxCoO2 observed by neutron inelastic scattering

We present neutron scattering spectra taken from a single crystal of Na0.75CoO2, the precursor to a novel cobalt-oxide superconductor. The data contain a prominent inelastic signal at low energies (~10 meV), which is localized in wavevector about the origin of two-dimensional reciprocal space. The signal is highly dispersive, and decreases in intensity with increasing temperature. We interpret these observations as direct evidence for the existence of ferromagnetic spin fluctuations within the cobalt-oxygen layers.

Magnetic Studies of Polycrystalline and Single-Crystal NaxCoO2

We have investigated the preparation and bulk magnetic properties of NaxCoO2 in the range 0.5<x<0.95, including those for single crystals grown by the floating-zone method in an image furnace. To characterize the samples and ascertain their quality we performed x-ray powder diffraction, electron-probe microanalysis (EPMA) and magnetization measurements. Based on our findings we are able to report conditions for the preparation of single-phase polycrystalline and single-crystal samples in the range 0.65<x<0.95. For lower concentration samples, however, i.e. x<0.65, residual Co3O4 impurities above the detectable limit remained, and conditions to eliminate this have still to be identified. Investigations of the anisotropic magnetization of NaxCoO2 single crystals show: (i) transitions at ~320 K, ~275K and ~22 K present for all Na doping levels investigated, (ii) a strong increase in magnetization below ~8 K, (iii) a crossover in sense for the anisotropy around 8-10 K, and (iv) a hysteresis in the magnetization for certain Na doping levels at temperatures below ~15 K. Notably, neither of the high temperature anomalies (275 K, 320 K) could be observed in the powder samples.

Observation of extended scattering continua characteristic of spin fractionalization in the 2D frustrated quantum magnet Cs2CuCl4 by neutron scattering

The magnetic excitations of the quasi-2D spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on an anisotropic triangular lattice Cs2CuCl4 are explored throughout the 2D Brillouin zone using inelastic neutron scattering. In the spin liquid phase above the transition to magnetic order extended excitation continua are observed, characteristic of fractionalization of S=1 spin waves into pairs of deconfined S=1/2 spinons and the hallmark of a resonating-valence-bond (RVB) state. The weak inter-layer couplings stabilize incommensurate spiral order at low temperatures and in this phase sharp magnons carrying a small part of the total scattering weight are observed at low energies below the continuum lower boundary. Linear spin-wave theory including one- and two-magnon processes can describe the sharp magnon excitation, but not the dominant continuum scattering, which instead is well described by a parameterized two-spinon cross-section. Those results suggest a cross-over in the nature of excitations from S=1 spin waves at low energies to S=1/2 spinons at medium to high energies, which could be understood if Cs2CuCl4 was in the close proximity of a transition between a fractional spin liquid and a magnetically-ordered phase.

A neutron scattering study of two-magnon states in the quantum magnet copper nitrate

We report measurements of the two-magnon states in a dimerized antiferromagnetic chain material, copper nitrate (Cu(NO3)2*2.5D2O). Using inelastic neutron scattering we have measured the one and two magnon excitation spectra in a large single crystal. The data are in excellent agreement with a perturbative expansion of the alternating Heisenberg Hamiltonian from the strongly dimerized limit. The expansion predicts a two-magnon bound state for q ~ (2n+1)pi*d which is consistent with the neutron scattering data.
