The collision strength of the [Ne V] infrared fine-structure lines

The calculation of accurate collision strengths for atomic transitions has been a long standing problem in quantitative spectroscopy. Most modern calculations are based on the R-matrix method and problems pertaining to the use of this method have led to a discussion of the accuracy of these results. More in particular, based on an analysis of the spectra of NGC 3918 and NGC 6302, Clegg et al. (1987) and Oliva et al. (1996) have questioned R-matrix calculations for the infrared [Ne V] fine-structure transitions. Using improved flux measurements for the [Ne V] lines, we show that the conclusion that these collision strengths would be too high, is not correct. The discrepancies found by Clegg et al. (1987) can be explained by the inaccuracy of the [Ne V] 342.6 nm flux they adopted. The discrepancies found by Oliva et al. (1996) can be explained by the inaccuracy of the LRS flux for the [Ne V] 14.32 micron line. Based on the data presented in this paper there is no reason to assume that there are any problems with the R-matrix calculations for Ne^4+ of Lennon & Burke (1994). We show that the data are accurate at the 30 % level or better. This confirms the validity of the close coupling method.

Charge Transfer Between Neutral Atoms and Highly Ionized Species: Implications for ISO Observations

We estimate rate coefficients for charge transfer between neutral hydrogen and helium and moderate to highly ionized heavy elements. Although charge transfer does not have much influence on hot collisionally ionized plasmas, its effects on photoionized plasmas can be profound. We present several photoionization models which illustrate the significant effect of charge transfer on the far infrared lines detected by ISO.

Comment on a paper by M. A. Bautista ``Atomic data from the Iron Project. XVI. Photoionization cross sections and oscillator strengths for Fe V''

Recently, Bautista (1996, A&AS, 119, 105) reported new calculations of photoionization cross sections for Fe V, and compared them with the earlier results of Reilman & Manson (1979, ApJS, 40, 815) and Verner et al. (1993, Atomic Data Nucl. Data Tables, 55, 233). Bautista claimed that beyond 10 Ry the new cross sections ``converge well toward the results by Reilman and Manson'', whereas ``the calculations by Verner et al. still underestimate the cross section by almost factor of two''. We show that Bautista erroneously compared the total (summed over shells) cross sections from Reilman & Manson with the partial 3d-shell cross sections from Verner et al. Actually, the total cross sections from Verner et al. and Reilman & Manson agree within 3% at all energies.

Physical Conditions in Low Ionization Regions of the Orion Nebula

We reexamine the spectroscopic underpinnings of recent suggestions that [O I] and [Fe II] lines from the Orion H II region are produced in gas where the iron-carrying grains have been destroyed and the electron density is surprisingly high. Our new observations show that previous detections of [O I] 5577 were dominated by telluric emission. Our limits are consistent with a moderate density (10^4 cm^{-3}) photoionized gas. We show that a previously proposed model of the Orion H II region reproduces the observed [O I] and [Fe II] spectrum. These lines are fully consistent with formation in a dusty region of moderate density.

Atomic Data for Permitted Resonance Lines of Atoms and Ions from H to Si, and S, Ar, Ca and Fe

We list vacuum wavelengths, energy levels, statistical weights, transition probabilities and oscillator strengths for permitted resonance spectral lines of all ions of 18 astrophysically important elements (H through Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe). Using a compilation of experimental energy levels, we derived accurate wavelengths for 5599 lines of 1828 ground-term multiplets which have gf-values calculated in the Opacity Project. We recalculated the Opacity Project multiplet gf-values to oscillator strengths and transition probabilities of individual lines. For completeness, we added 372 resonance lines of NeI, ArI, FeI and FeII ions which are not covered by the Opacity Project. Intercombination and forbidden lines are not included in the present compilation.

Atomic Data for Astrophysics. II. New Analytic Fits for Photoionization Cross Sections of Atoms and Ions

We present a complete set of analytic fits to the non-relativistic photoionization cross sections for the ground states of atoms and ions of elements from H through Si, and S, Ar, Ca, and Fe. Near the ionization thresholds, the fits are based on the Opacity Project theoretical cross sections interpolated and smoothed over resonances. At higher energies, the fits reproduce calculated Hartree-Dirac-Slater photoionization cross sections.
