Coherence properties of the two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate

We present a detailed finite-temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) treatment of the two-dimensional trapped Bose gas. We highlight the numerical methods required to obtain solutions to the HFB equations within the Popov approximation, the derivation of which we outline. This method has previously been applied successfully to the three-dimensional case and we focus on the unique features of the system which are due to its reduced dimensionality. These can be found in the spectrum of low-lying excitations and in the coherence properties. We calculate the Bragg response and the coherence length within the condensate in analogy with experiments performed in the quasi-one-dimensional regime [Richard et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 010405 (2003)] and compare to results calculated for the one-dimensional case. We then make predictions for the experimental observation of the quasicondensate phase via Bragg spectroscopy in the quasi-two-dimensional regime.

Finite temperature theory of the trapped two dimensional Bose gas

We present a Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theoretical treatment of the two-dimensional trapped Bose gas and indicate how semiclassical approximations to this and other formalisms have lead to confusion. We numerically obtain results for the fully quantum mechanical HFB theory within the Popov approximation and show that the presence of the trap stabilizes the condensate against long wavelength fluctuations. These results are used to show where phase fluctuations lead to the formation of a quasicondensate.

Pulsed Raman output coupler for an atom laser

We theoretically study a pulsed stimulated two-photon Raman outcoupler for an atom laser using a full three-dimensional description. A finite-temperature trapped Bose-condensed atomic gas is treated self-consistently by the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations. The model is closely related to a recent experiment on optical outcoupling [E.W. Hagley et al., Science 283, 1706 (1999)]. We analyze the momentum distribution of the output atoms and show how the output beam may be used as a probe of the quantum state for the trapped atomic gas and how it could be engineered and controlled in a nonlinear way.

Quantitative test of thermal field theory for Bose-Einstein condensates

We present numerical results from a full second order quantum field theory of Bose-Einstein condensates applied to the 1997 JILA experiment [D. S. Jin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. Vol. 78, 764 (1997)]. Good agreement is found for the energies and decay rates for both the lowest-energy m = 2 and m = 0 modes. The anomalous behaviour of the m = 0 mode is due to experimental perturbation of the non-condensate. The theory includes the coupled dynamics of the condensate and thermal cloud, the anomalous pair average and all relevant finite size effects.

Riemann zeros, prime numbers and fractal potentials

Using two distinct inversion techniques, the local one-dimensional potentials for the Riemann zeros and prime number sequence are reconstructed. We establish that both inversion techniques, when applied to the same set of levels, lead to the same fractal potential. This provides numerical evidence that the potential obtained by inversion of a set of energy levels is unique in one-dimension. We also investigate the fractal properties of the reconstructed potentials and estimate the fractal dimensions to be $D=1.5$ for the Riemann zeros and $D = 1.8$ for the prime numbers. This result is somewhat surprising since the nearest-neighbour spacings of the Riemann zeros are known to be chaotically distributed whereas the primes obey almost poisson-like statistics. Our findings show that the fractal dimension is dependent on both the level-statistics and spectral rigidity, $Δ_3$, of the energy levels.

Magnetoplasmon excitations in arrays of circular and noncircular quantum dots

We have investigated the magnetoplasmon excitations in arrays of circular and noncircular quantum dots within the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac-von Weizsäcker approximation. Deviations from the ideal collective excitations of isolated parabolically confined electrons arise from local perturbations of the confining potential as well as interdot Coulomb interactions. The latter are unimportant unless the interdot separations are of the order of the size of the dots. Local perturbations such as radial anharmonicity and noncircular symmetry lead to clear signatures of the violation of the generalized Kohn theorem. In particular, the reduction of the local symmetry from SO(2) to $C_4$ results in a resonant coupling of different modes and an observable anticrossing behaviour in the power absorption spectrum. Our results are in good agreement with recent far-infrared (FIR) transmission experiments.

Effects of temperature upon the collapse of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a gas with attractive interactions

We present a study of the effects of temperature upon the excitation frequencies of a Bose-Einstein condensate formed within a dilute gas with a weak attractive effective interaction between the atoms. We use the self-consistent Hartree-Fock Bogoliubov treatment within the Popov approximation and compare our results to previous zero temperature and Hartree-Fock calculations The metastability of the condensate is monitored by means of the $l=0$ excitation frequency. As the number of atoms in the condensate is increased, with $T$ held constant, this frequency goes to zero, signalling a phase transition to a dense collapsed state. The critical number for collapse is found to decrease as a function of temperature, the rate of decrease being greater than that obtained in previous Hartree-Fock calculations.

Self-consistent effects of continuous wave output coupling of atoms from a Bose-Einstein condensate

We present a self-consistent mean field model of the extraction of atoms from a Bose-Einstein condensate to form a CW atom laser. The model is based upon the Hartree-Fock Bogoliubov equations within the Popov approximation, modified by the inclusion of spatially dependent source and sink terms, which lead to current flow within the condensate. The effects of this current flow are investigated for traps containing Rubidium (repulsive effective interaction) and Lithium (attractive interaction) atoms. The extra kinetic energy associated with this flow is shown to be able to stabilise the condensate in the attractive case against mechanical instability.

Gapless finite-$T$ theory of collective modes of a trapped gas

We present predictions for the frequencies of collective modes of trapped Bose-condensed $^{87}$Rb atoms at finite temperature. Our treatment includes a self-consistent treatment of the mean-field from finite-$T$ excitations and the anomolous average. This is the first gapless calculation of this type for a trapped Bose-Einstein condensed gas. The corrections quantitatively account for the downward shift in the $m=2$ excitation frequencies observed in recent experiments as the critical temperature is approached.

Excitations of a Bose-condensed gas in anisotropic traps

We investigate the zero-temperature collective excitations of a Bose-condensed atomic gas in anisotropic parabolic traps. The condensate density is determined by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation using a spherical harmonic expansion. The GP eigenfunctions are then used to solve the Bogoliubov equations to obtain the collective excitation frequencies and mode densities. The frequencies of the various modes, classified by their parity and the axial angular momentum quantum number, m, are mapped out as a function of the axial anisotropy. Specific emphasis is placed upon the evolution of these modes from the modes in the limit of an isotropic trap.

Finite temperature excitations of a trapped Bose gas

We present a detailed study of the temperature dependence of the condensate and noncondensate density profiles of a Bose-condensed gas in a parabolic trap. These quantitites are calculated self-consistently using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations within the Popov approximation. Below the Bose-Einstein transition the excitation frequencies have a realtively weak temperature dependence even though the condensate is strongly depleted. As the condensate density goes to zero through the transition, the excitation frequencies are strongly affected and approach the frequencies of a noninteracting gas in the high temperature limit.
