Beurling-Lax type theorems and Cuntz relations

We prove various Beurling-Lax type theorems, when the classical backward-shift operator is replaced by a general resolvent operator associated with a rational function. We also study connections to the Cuntz relations. An important tool is a new representation result for analytic functions, in terms of composition and multiplication operators associated with a given rational function. Applications to the theory of de Branges-Rovnyak spaces, also in the indefinite metric setting, are given.

Positive and generalized positive real lemma for slice hyperholomorphic functions

In this paper we prove a quaternionic positive real lemma as well as its generalized version, in case the associated kernel has negative squares for slice hyperholomorphic functions. We consider the case of functions with positive real part in the half space of quaternions with positive real part, as well as the case of (generalized) Schur functions in the open unit ball.

The $H^\infty$ functional calculus based on the $S$-spectrum for quaternionic operators and for $n$-tuples of noncommuting operators

In this paper we extend the $H^\infty$ functional calculus to quaternionic operators and to $n$-tuples of noncommuting operators using the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions and the associated functional calculus, called $S$-functional calculus. The $S$-functional calculus has two versions one for quaternionic-valued functions and one for Clifford algebra-valued functions and can be considered the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus based on slice hyperholomorphicity because it shares with it the most important properties. The $S$-functional calculus is based on the notion of $S$-spectrum which, in the case of quaternionic normal operators on a Hilbert space, is also the notion of spectrum that appears in the quaternionic spectral theorem. The main purpose of this paper is to construct the $H^\infty$ functional calculus based on the notion of $S$-spectrum for both quaternionic operators and for $n$-tuples of noncommuting operators. We remark that the $H^\infty$ functional calculus for $(n+1)$-tuples of operators applies, in particular, to the Dirac operator.

Adaptive orthonormal systems for matrix-valued functions

In this paper we consider functions in the Hardy space $\mathbf{H}_2^{p\times q}$ defined in the unit disc of matrix-valued. We show that it is possible, as in the scalar case, to decompose those functions as linear combinations of suitably modified matrix-valued Blaschke product, in an adaptive way. The procedure is based on a generalization to the matrix-valued case of the maximum selection principle which involves not only selections of suitable points in the unit disc but also suitable orthogonal projections. We show that the maximum selection principle gives rise to a convergent algorithm. Finally, we discuss the case of real-valued signals.

An extension of Herglotz's theorem to the quaternions

A classical theorem of Herglotz states that a function $n\mapsto r(n)$ from $\mathbb Z$ into $\mathbb C^{s\times s}$ is positive definite if and only there exists a $\mathbb C^{s\times s}$-valued positive measure $dμ$ on $[0,2π]$ such that $r(n)=\int_0^{2π}e^{int}dμ(t)$for $n\in \mathbb Z$. We prove a quaternionic analogue of this result when the function is allowed to have a number of negative squares. A key tool in the argument is the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions, and the representation of such functions which have a positive real part in the unit ball of the quaternions. We study in great detail the case of positive definite functions.

Boundary interpolation for slice hyperholomorphic Schur functions

A boundary Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem is posed and solved in the quaternionic setting. Given nonnegative real numbers $κ_1, \ldots, κ_N$, quaternions $p_1, \ldots, p_N$ all of modulus $1$, so that the $2$-spheres determined by each point do not intersect and $p_u \neq 1$ for $u = 1,\ldots, N$, and quaternions $s_1, \ldots, s_N$, we wish to find a slice hyperholomorphic Schur function $s$ so that $$\lim_{\substack{r\rightarrow 1\\ r\in(0,1)}} s(r p_u) = s_u\quad {\rm for} \quad u=1,\ldots, N,$$ and $$\lim_{\substack{r\rightarrow 1\\ r\in(0,1)}}\frac{1-s(rp_u)\overline{s_u}}{1-r}\leκ_u,\quad {\rm for} \quad u=1,\ldots, N.$$ Our arguments relies on the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces.

The spectral theorem for unitary operators based on the $S$-spectrum

The quaternionic spectral theorem has already been considered in the literature, see e.g. [22], [31], [32], however, except for the finite dimensional case in which the notion of spectrum is associated to an eigenvalue problem, see [21], it is not specified which notion of spectrum underlies the theorem. In this paper we prove the quaternionic spectral theorem for unitary operators using the $S$-spectrum. In the case of quaternionic matrices, the $S$-spectrum coincides with the right-spectrum and so our result recovers the well known theorem for matrices. The notion of $S$-spectrum is relatively new, see [17], and has been used for quaternionic linear operators, as well as for $n$-tuples of not necessarily commuting operators, to define and study a noncommutative versions of the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus. The main tools to prove the spectral theorem for unitary operators are the quaternionic version of Herglotz's theorem, which relies on the new notion of $q$-positive measure, and quaternionic spectral measures, which are related to the quaternionic Riesz projectors defined by means of the $S$-resolvent operator and the $S$-spectrum. The results in this paper restore the analogy with the complex case in which the classical notion of spectrum appears in the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus as well as in the spectral theorem.

Infinite product representations for kernels and iterations of functions

We study infinite products of reproducing kernels with view to their use in dynamics (of iterated function systems), in harmonic analysis, and in stochastic processes. On the way, we construct a new family of representations of the Cuntz relations. Then, using these representations we associate a fixed filled Julia set with a Hilbert space. This is based on analysis and conformal geometry of a fixed rational mapping $R$ in one complex variable, and its iterations.

On the class SI of J-contractive functions intertwining solutions of linear differential equations

In the PhD thesis of the second author under the supervision of the third author was defined the class SI of J-contractive functions, depending on a parameter and arising as transfer functions of overdetermined conservative 2D systems invariant in one direction. In this paper we extend and solve in the class SI, a number of problems originally set for the class SC of functions contractive in the open right-half plane, and unitary on the imaginary line with respect to some preassigned signature matrix J. The problems we consider include the Schur algorithm, the partial realization problem and the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem. The arguments rely on a correspondence between elements in a given subclass of SI and elements in SC. Another important tool in the arguments is a new result pertaining to the classical tangential Schur algorithm.

Krein systems and canonical systems on a finite interval: accelerants with a jump discontinuity at the origin and continuous potentials

This paper is devoted to connections between accelerants and potentials of Krein systems and of canonical systems of Dirac type, both on a finite interval. It is shown that a continuous potential is always generated by an accelerant, provided the latter is continuous with a possible jump discontinuity at the origin. Moreover, the generating accelerant is uniquely determined by the potential. The results are illustrated on pseudo-exponential potentials. The paper is a continuation of the earlier paper of the authors [1] dealing with the direct problem for Krein systems.

Linear State space theory in the white noise space setting

We study state space equations within the white noise space setting. A commutative ring of power series in a countable number of variables plays an important role. Transfer functions are rational functions with coefficients in this commutative ring, and are characterized in a number of ways. A major feature in our approach is the observation that key characteristics of a linear, time invariant, stochastic system are determined by the corresponding characteristics associated with the deterministic part of the system, namely its average behavior.

Krein systems

In the present paper we extend results of M.G. Krein associated to the spectral problem for Krein systems to systems with matrix valued accelerants with a possible jump discontinuity at the origin. Explicit formulas for the accelerant are given in terms of the matrizant of the system in question. Recent developments in the theory of continuous analogs of the resultant operator play an essential role.

The Schur transformation for Nevanlinna functions: operator representations, resolvent matrices, and orthogonal polynomials

A Nevanlinna function is a function which is analytic in the open upper half plane and has a non-negative imaginary part there. In this paper we study a fractional linear transformation for a Nevanlinna function $n$ with a suitable asymptotic expansion at $\infty$, that is an analogue of the Schur transformation for contractive analytic functions in the unit disc. Applying the transformation $p$ times we find a Nevanlinna function $n_p$ which is a fractional linear transformation of the given function $n$. The main results concern the effect of this transformation to the realizations of $n$ and $n_p$, by which we mean their representations through resolvents of self-adjoint operators in Hilbert space. Our tools are block operator matrix representations, $u$--resolvent matrices, and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces.

Matrix-J-unitary non-commutative rational formal power series

In this paper, a theory of realization and minimal factorization of rational matrix-valued functions which are $J$-unitary on the imaginary line or on the unit circle is extended to the setting of non-commutative rational formal power series. The property of $J$-unitarity holds on $N$-tuples of $n\times n$ skew-Hermitian versus unitary matrices ($n=1,2,...$), and a rational formal power series is called \emph{matrix-$J$-unitary} in this case. The close relationship between minimal realizations and structured Hermitian solutions $H$ of the Lyapunov or Stein equations is established. The results are specialized for the case of \emph{matrix-$J$-inner} rational formal power series. In this case $H>0$, however the proof of that is more elaborated than in the one-variable case and involves a new technique. For the rational \emph{matrix-inner} case, i.e., when $J=I$, the theorem of Ball, Groenewald and Malakorn on unitary realization of a formal power series from the non-commutative Schur--Agler class admits an improvement: its finite-dimensionality and uniqueness up to a unitary similarity is proved. A version of the theory for \emph{matrix-selfadjoint} rational formal power series is also presented. The concept of non-commutative formal reproducing kernel Pontryagin spaces is introduced, and in this framework the backward shift realization of a matrix-$J$-unitary rational formal power series in a finite-dimensional non-commutative de Branges--Rovnyak space is described.

Rational hyperholomorphic functions in (\mathbb R^4)

We introduce the notion of rationality for hyperholomorphic functions (functions in the kernel of the Cauchy-Fueter operator). Following the case of one complex variable, we give three equivalent definitions: the first in terms of Cauchy-Kovalevskaya quotients of polynomials, the second in terms of realizations and the third in terms of backward-shift invariance. Also introduced and studied are the counterparts of the Arveson space and Blaschke factors.

Notes on interpolation in the generalized Schur class. II. Nudel'man's problem

An indefinite generalization of Nudel'man's problem is used in a systematic approach to interpolation theorems for generalized Schur and Nevanlinna functions with interior and boundary data. Besides results on existence criteria for Pick-Nevanlinna and Caratheodory-Fejer interpolation, the method yealds new results on generalized interpolation in the sense of Sarason and boundary interpolation, including properties of the finite Hilbert transform relative to weights. The main theorem appeals to the Ball and Helton almost-commutant lifting theorem to provide criteria for the existence of a solution to Nudel'man's problem.

A note on interpolation in the generalized Schur class

Realization theory for operator colligations on Pontryagin spaces is used to study interpolation and factorization in generalized Schur classes. Several criteria are derived which imply that a given function is almost the restriction of a generalized Schur function. The role of realization theory in coefficient problems is also discussed.
