The sub-Jupiter mass transiting exoplanet WASP-11b

We report the discovery of a sub-Jupiter mass exoplanet transiting a magnitude V=11.7 host star 1SWASP J030928.54+304024.7. A simultaneous fit to the transit photometry and radial-velocity measurements yield a planet mass M_p=0.53+-0.07M_J, radius R_p=0.91^{+0.06}_{-0.03}R_J and an orbital period of 3.722465^{+0.000006}_{-0.000008} days. The host star is of spectral type K3V, with a spectral analysis yielding an effective temperature of 4800+-100K and log g=4.45+-0.2. It is amongst the smallest, least massive and lowest luminosity stars known to harbour a transiting exoplanet. WASP-11b is the third least strongly irradiated transiting exoplanet discovered to date, experiencing an incident flux F_p=1.9x10^8 erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} and having an equilibrium temperature T_eq=960+-70K.

Spin-Incoherent Transport in Quantum Wires

When a quantum wire is weakly confined, a conductance plateau appears at e^2/h with decreasing carrier density in zero magnetic field accompanied by a gradual suppression of the 2e^2/h plateau. Applying an in-plane magnetic field B|| does not alter the value of this quantization; however, the e^2/h plateau weakens with increasing B|| up to 9 T, and then strengthens on further increasing B||, which also restores the 2e^2/h plateau. Our results are consistent with spin-incoherent transport in a one-dimensional wire.

Pauli spin blockade in carbon nanotube double quantum dots

We report Pauli spin blockade in an impurity defined carbon nanotube double quantum dot. We observe a pronounced current suppression for negative source-drain bias voltages which is investigated for both symmetric and asymmetric coupling of the quantum dots to the leads. The measured differential conductance agrees well with a theoretical model of a double quantum dot system in the spin-blockade regime which allows us to estimate the occupation probabilities of the relevant singlet and triplet states. This work shows that effective spin-to-charge conversion in nanotube quantum dots is feasible and opens the possibility of single-spin readout in a material that is not limited by hyperfine interaction with nuclear spins.

Charge pumping in carbon nanotube quantum dots

We investigate charge pumping in carbon nanotube quantum dots driven by the electric field of a surface acoustic wave. We find that at small driving amplitudes, the pumped current reverses polarity as the conductance is tuned through a Coulomb blockade peak using a gate electrode. We study the behavior as a function of wave amplitude, frequency and direction and develop a model in which our results can be understood as resulting from adiabatic charge redistribution between the leads and quantum dots on the nanotube.

Field-tunable magnetic phases in a semiconductor-based two-dimensional Kondo lattice

We show the existence of intrinsic localized spins in mesoscopic high-mobility GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. Non-equilibrium transport spectroscopy reveals a quasi-regular distribution of the spins, and indicates that the spins interact indirectly via the conduction electrons. The interaction between spins manifests in characteristic zero-bias anomaly near the Fermi energy, and indicates gate voltage-controllable magnetic phases in high-mobility heterostructures. To address this issue further, we have also designed electrostatically tunable Hall devices, that allow a probing of Hall characteristics at the active region of the mesoscopic devices. We show that the zero field Hall coefficient has an anomalous contribution, which can be attributed to scattering by the localized spins. The anomalous contribution can be destroyed by an increase in temperature, source drain bias, or field range.

Sensitivity of the magnetic state of a spin lattice on itinerant electron orbital phase

Spatially extended localized spins can interact via indirect exchange interaction through Friedel oscillations in the Fermi sea. In arrays of localized spins such interaction can lead to a magnetically ordered phase. Without external magnetic field such a phase is well understood via a "two-impurity" Kondo model. Here we employ non-equilibrium transport spectroscopy to investigate the role of the orbital phase of conduction electrons on the magnetic state of a spin lattice. We show experimentally, that even tiniest perpendicular magnetic field can influence the magnitude of the inter-spin magnetic exchange.

Energy-dependent tunnelling from few-electron dynamic quantum dots

We measure the electron escape-rate from surface-acoustic-wave dynamic quantum dots (QDs) through a tunnel barrier. Rate-equations are used to extract the tunnelling rates, which change by an order of magnitude with tunnel-barrier gate voltage. We find that the tunnelling rates depend on the number of electrons in each dynamic QD because of Coulomb energy. By comparing this dependence to a saddle-point-potential model, the addition energies of the second and third electron in each dynamic QD are estimated. The scale (a few meV) is comparable to those in static QDs as expected.

Probing e-e interactions in a periodic array of GaAs quantum wires

We present the results of non-linear tunnelling spectroscopy between an array of independent quantum wires and an adjacent two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a double-quantum-well structure. The two layers are separately contacted using a surface-gate scheme, and the wires are all very regular, with dimensions chosen carefully so that there is minimal modulation of the 2DEG by the gates defining the wires. We have mapped the dispersion spectrum of the 1D wires down to the depletion of the last 1D subband by measuring the conductance \emph{G} as a function of the in-plane magnetic field \emph{B}, the interlayer bias $V_{\rm dc}$ and the wire gate voltage. There is a strong suppression of tunnelling at zero bias, with temperature and dc-bias dependences consistent with power laws, as expected for a Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid caused by electron-electron interactions in the wires. In addition, the current peaks fit the free-electron model quite well, but with just one 1D subband there is extra structure that may indicate interactions.

Surface-acoustic-wave-driven luminescence from a lateral p-n junction

The authors report surface-acoustic-wave-driven luminescence from a lateral p-n junction formed by molecular beam epitaxy regrowth of a modulation doped GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well on a patterned GaAs substrate. Surface-acoustic-wave-driven transport is demonstrated by peaks in the electrical current and light emission from the GaAs quantum well at the resonant frequency of the transducer. This type of junction offers high carrier mobility and scalability. The demonstration of surface-acoustic-wave luminescence is a significant step towards single-photon applications in quantum computation and quantum cryptography.

The WASP Project and the SuperWASP Cameras

The SuperWASP Cameras are wide-field imaging systems sited at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, and the Sutherland Station of the South African Astronomical Observatory. Each instrument has a field of view of some ~482 square degrees with an angular scale of 13.7 arcsec per pixel, and is capable of delivering photometry with accuracy better than 1% for objects having V ~ 7.0 - 11.5. Lower quality data for objects brighter than V ~15.0 are stored in the project archive. The systems, while designed to monitor fields with high cadence, are capable of surveying the entire visible sky every 40 minutes. Depending on the observational strategy, the data rate can be up to 100GB per night. We have produced a robust, largely automatic reduction pipeline and advanced archive which are used to serve the data products to the consortium members. The main science aim of these systems is to search for bright transiting exo-planets systems suitable for spectroscopic followup observations. The first 6 month season of SuperWASP-North observations produced lightcurves of ~6.7 million objects with 12.9 billion data points.

Fano effect and Kondo effect in quantum dots formed in strongly coupled quantum wells

We present lateral transport measurements on strongly, vertically coupled quantum dots formed in separate quantum wells in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. Coulomb oscillations are observed forming a honeycomb lattice consistent with two strongly coupled dots. When the tunnel barriers in the upper well are reduced we observe the Fano effect due to the interfering paths through a resonant state in the lower well and a continuum state in the upper well. In both regimes an in plane magnetic field reduces the coupling between the wells when the magnetic length is comparable to the center to center separation of the wells. We also observe the Kondo effect which allows the spin states of the double dot system to be probed.

Coherent instabilities of intense high-energy "white" charged-particle beams in the presence of nonlocal effects within the context of the Madelung fluid description

A hydrodynamical description of coherent instabilities that take place in the longitudinal dynamics of a charged-particle coasting beam in a high-energy accelerating machine is presented. This is done in the framework of the Madelung fluid picture provided by the Thermal Wave Model. The well known coherent instability charts in the complex plane of the longitudinal coupling impedance for monochromatic beams are recovered. The results are also interpreted in terms of the deterministic approach to modulational instability analysis usually given for monochromatic large amplitude wave train propagation governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The instability analysis is then extended to a non-monochromatic coasting beam with a given thermal equilibrium distribution, thought as a statistical ensemble of monochromatic incoherent coasting beams ("white" beam). In this hydrodynamical framework, the phenomenon of Landau damping is predicted without using any kinetic equation governing the phase space evolution of the system.

Transverse modulational instability of partially incoherent soliton stripes

Based on the Wigner distribution approach, an analysis of the effect of partial incoherence on the transverse instability of soliton structures in nonlinear Kerr media is presented. It is explicitly shown, that for a Lorentzian incoherence spectrum the partial incoherence gives rise to a damping which counteracts, and tends to suppress, the transverse instability growth. However, the general picture is more complicated and it is shown that the effect of the partial incoherence depends crucially on the form of the incoherence spectrum. In fact, for spectra with finite rms-width, the partial incoherence may even increase both the growth rate and the range of unstable, transverse wave numbers.

New features of modulational instability of partially coherent light; importance of the incoherence spectrum

It is shown that the properties of the modulational instability of partially coherent waves propagating in a nonlinear Kerr medium depend crucially on the profile of the incoherent field spectrum. Under certain conditions, the incoherence may even enhance, rather than suppress, the instability. In particular, it is found that the range of modulationally unstable wave numbers does not necessarily decrease monotonously with increasing degree of incoherence and that the modulational instability may still exist even when long wavelength perturbations are stable.

Light bullets and optical collapse in vacuum

In quantum electrodynamics, photon--photon scattering can be the result of the exchange of virtual electron--positron pairs. Effectively, this gives rise to self-interaction terms in Maxwell's equations, similar to the nonlinearities due to polarization in nonlinear optics. These self-interaction terms vanish in the limit of parallel propagating waves. However if the modes generated in bounded regions are used, there will be a non-zero total effect. We show that stationary two-dimensional light bullets can form in guiding structures, due to the balancing effect of quantum electrodynamical vacuum nonlinearities on dispersion and diffraction. These light bullets are unstable and exhibit the possibility of self-focusing collapse. The consequences of our results are also discussed.

Fermat's principle and variational analysis of an optical model for light propagation exhibiting a critical radius

Fermat's principle and variational analysis is used to analyze the trajectories of light propagating in a radially inhomogeneous medium with a singularity in the center. It is found that the light trajectories are similar to those around a black hole, in the sense that there exists a critical radius within which the light cannot escape, but spirals into the singularity.

Landau damping of partially incoherent Langmuir waves

It is shown that partial incoherence, in the form of stochastic phase noise, of a Langmuir wave in an unmagnetized plasma gives rise to a Landau-type damping. Starting from the Zakharov equations, which describe the nonlinear interaction between Langmuir and ion-acoustic waves, a kinetic equation is derived for the plasmons by introducing the Wigner-Moyal transform of the complex Langmuir wave field. This equation is then used to analyze the stability properties of small perturbations on a stationary solution consisting of a constant amplitude wave with stochastic phase noise. The concomitant dispersion relation exhibits the phenomenon of Landau-like damping. However, this damping differs from the classical Landau damping in which a Langmuir wave, interacting with the plasma electrons, loses energy. In the present process, the damping is non-dissipative and is caused by the resonant interaction between an instantaneously-produced disturbance, due to the parametric interactions, and a partially incoherent Langmuir wave, which can be considered as a quasi-particle composed of an ensemble of partially incoherent plasmons.

The Majorana Ge-76 Double-Beta Decay Project

The Majorana Experiment is a next-generation Ge-76 double-beta decay search. It will employ 500 kg of Ge, isotopically enriched to 86% in Ge-76, in the form of 200 detectors in a close-packed array for high granularity. Each crystal will be electronically segmented, with each region fitted with pulse-shape analysis electronics. A half-life sensitivity is predicted of 4.2e27 y or < 0.02-0.07 eV, depending on the nuclear matrix elements used to interpret the data.
