New measurements of $B^+_c$ decays into single charm final states

Using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9 \,\textrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment, searches are performed for $B^+_c$ mesons decaying to a charm and a charmless meson pair. Five products of branching fraction, ${\cal B}(B^+_c\!\to DX)$, and fragmentation ratio $f_c\big/f_u$ are reported, \begin{align*} R_{D^+ K^{*0}} &= ( 1.42 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.11 ) \times 10^{-6}, \\ R_{D^{*0} K^+} &= (1.46 \pm 0.30 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.05 ) \times 10^{-6}, \\ R_{D^+_s \phi}\ \ \ &= ( 4.0\pm 1.3 \pm 0.2 \pm 0.5) \times 10^{-7 }, \\ R_{D^0 K^+}\ &= ( 9.7 \pm 1.0 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.3 ) \times 10^{-7}, \\ R_{D^0 \pi^+}\ &<\ 1.4 \times 10^{-7}\ \text{at 95\% CL}. \end{align*} In each case, the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third includes external uncertainties. The first result is a first observation, the second and third exhibit clear evidence and the fourth improves the precision of previous measurements by a factor two. Additionally, the $CP$ asymmetry in $B^+_c\!\to D^0 K^+$ decays is measured and found to be compatible with zero.

Improved branching-fraction measurements of $B^0_{(s)} \to K_S^0 h^+ h^{'-}$ decays and first observation of $B^0_{s} \to K_S^0 K^+ K^-$

This paper presents a study of the charmless three-body decays ${B^0_{(s)} \to K_{\mathrm{S}}^0 h^+ h^{\prime -}}$ (where $h^{(\prime)} = \pi, K$), using a sample of $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9\mbox{\,fb}^{-1}$. The decay ${B^0_s \to K_{\mathrm{S}}^0 K^+ K^-}$ is observed for the first time, and the following ratios of branching fractions are measured: \begin{alignat*}{6} &\frac{{\cal B}(B^0 \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} K^+ K^-)}{{\cal B}(B^0 \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} \pi^+\pi^-)} &&= 0.578 &&\pm 0.007 &&\pm 0.017\,, &\frac{{\cal B}(B^0 \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} K^\pm\pi^\mp)}{{\cal B}(B^0 \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} \pi^+\pi^-)} &&= 0.1363 &&\pm 0.0035 &&\pm 0.0051\,, &\frac{{\cal B}(B^0_s \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} \pi^+\pi^-)}{{\cal B}(B^0 \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} \pi^+\pi^-)} &&= 0.269 &&\pm 0.011 &&\pm 0.015 && \pm 0.008\,, &\frac{{\cal B}(B^0_s \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} K^+ K^-)}{{\cal B}(B^0 \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} \pi^+\pi^-)} &&= 0.0303 &&\pm 0.0041 &&\pm 0.0025 && \pm 0.0009\,, &\frac{{\cal B}(B^0_s \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} K^\pm\pi^\mp)}{{\cal B}(B^0 \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} \pi^+\pi^-)} &&= 1.818 &&\pm 0.021 &&\pm 0.031 && \pm 0.056\,, \end{alignat*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to knowledge of the ratio of hadronisation fractions of the $B^0_s$ and $B^0$ mesons, respectively.

Sensor operating point calibration and monitoring of the ALICE Inner Tracking System during LHC Run 3

The new Inner Tracking System (ITS2) of the ALICE experiment began operation in 2021 with the start of LHC Run 3. Compared to its predecessor, ITS2 offers substantial improvements in pointing resolution, tracking efficiency at low transverse momenta, and readout-rate capabilities. The detector employs silicon Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) featuring a pixel size of 26.88$\times$29.24 $\mu$m$^2$ and an intrinsic spatial resolution of approximately 5 $\mu$m. With a remarkably low material budget of 0.36% of radiation length ($X_{0}$) per layer in the three innermost layers and a total sensitive area of about 10 m$^2$, the ITS2 constitutes the largest-scale application of MAPS technology in a high-energy physics experiment and the first of its kind operated at the LHC. For stable data taking, it is crucial to calibrate different parameters of the detector, such as in-pixel charge thresholds and the masking of noisy pixels. The calibration of 24120 monolithic sensors, comprising a total of 12.6$\times$10$^{9}$ pixels, represents a major operational challenge. This paper presents the methods developed for the calibration of the ITS2 and outlines the strategies for monitoring and dynamically adjusting the detector's key performance parameters over time.

Amplitude analysis of the $\Xi^+_c\to pK^-\pi^+$ decay and $\Xi^+_c$ baryon polarization measurement in semileptonic beauty-hadron decays

An amplitude analysis of the $\Xi^+_c\to pK^-\pi^+$ decay together with a measurement of the $\Xi^+_c$ polarization vector in semileptonic beauty-hadron decays is presented. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$. An amplitude model is developed and the resonance fractions as well as two- and three-body decay parameters are reported. A sizeable $\Xi^+_c$ polarization is found. A large sensitivity of the $\Xi^+_c\to pK^-\pi^+$ decay to the polarization is seen, making the amplitude model suitable for $\Xi^+_c$ polarization measurements in other systems.

Coherent photoproduction of $\rho^0, \omega$ and excited vector mesons in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions

The invariant-mass distribution for the coherent photoproduction of dipions in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions is measured using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $224.6 \pm 9.6 \mu$b$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment in 2018 at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV. In the mass range from 400 to 1200 MeV, the results are consistent with previous experiments, with the spectrum dominated by the $\rho^0$ meson, which interferes with a nonresonant component, together with a smaller $\omega$ meson contribution. In an extended mass range up to 2300 MeV, models previously used do not fit the data and a consistent description requires the introduction of two resonances at masses of $1350\pm20$ MeV and $1790\pm20$ MeV with widths of about 300 MeV. The cross-section for each meson is measured differentially in twelve bins of rapidity from 2.05 to 4.90. The $\rho^0$ cross-section increases with rapidity from about 400 to 600 mb and is measured with a typical precision of 8\%, while the cross-section times branching fraction for the $\omega,\rho^\prime$ and $\rho^{\prime\prime}$, with the statistical precision of the data, do not have a pronounced rapidity dependence and are between 0.5 and 1.5 mb, with uncertainties up to 30\%. A large nuclear suppression is observed for the $\rho^0$ meson compared to expectations based on photoproduction on the proton that use the impulse approximation. Significant suppression is also observed compared to that predicted by elastic scattering described in the Glauber approach, or with the addition of inelastic scattering in a Gribov--Glauber model.

Measurements of charmed meson and antimeson production asymmetries at $\sqrt{s} =13.6$ TeV

This article presents doubly differential measurements of the asymmetries in production rates between mesons containing a charm quark and those containing an anticharm quark in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV using data recorded by the LHCb experiment. The asymmetries of $D^0$, $D^+$ and $D_s^+$ mesons are measured for two-dimensional intervals in transverse momentum and pseudorapidity, within the range $2.5<p_T<25.0$ GeV$/c$ and $2.0<\eta<4.5$. No significant production asymmetries are observed. Comparisons to the Pythia 8 and Herwig 7 event generators are also presented, and their agreement with the data is evaluated. These measurements constitute the first measurements of production asymmetries at this centre-of-mass energy of colliding beams, and the first measurements with the LHCb Run 3 detector.

Measurement of the branching fraction ratio $R_K$ at large dilepton invariant mass

A test of lepton universality between muons and electrons is performed using $B^+\to K^+\ell^+\ell^-$ decays (where $\ell$ = $e$, $\mu$), in the dilepton invariant-mass-squared region above 14.3 GeV$^2/c^4$. The data used for the measurement consists of beauty meson decays produced in proton-proton collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 $\text{fb}^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment between 2011 and 2018. The ratio of branching fractions for $B^+\to K^+\mu^+\mu^-$ and $B^+\to K^+e^+e^-$ decays is measured to be $R_K = 1.08^{+0.11}_{-0.09}\;(\text{stat})\;^{+0.04}_{-0.04}\;(\text{syst})$, which is consistent with the Standard Model prediction of unity. This constitutes the most precise test of lepton flavour universality using $B^+\to K^+\ell^+\ell^-$ decays with dilepton invariant-mass-squared above the $\psi(2S)$ mass, whilst being the first of its kind at a hadron collider.

Observation of the decay $B^0_{s}\to K^0 p \bar{p}$ and measurement of the $B^0_{(s)} \to K^0 p \bar{p}$ branching fractions

A study of the charmless baryonic decays $B^0_{(s)} \to K^0 p \bar{p}$ is presented, where $B^0_{(s)}$ denotes either a $B^0$ or a $B^0_s$ meson. The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and $13~\mathrm{Tev}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. The decay $B^0_s \to K^0 p \bar{p}$ is observed for the first time, with a measured branching fraction of $(9.14 \pm 1.69 \pm 0.90 \pm 0.33 \pm 0.20) \times 10^{-7}$ and a significance of $5.6\sigma$. The uncertainties respectively account for statistical and systematic contributions, the precision of the branching fraction of the normalisation channel $B^0 \to K^0 \pi^{+} \pi^{-}$ and the fragmentation fraction ratio ${f_s}/{f_d}$. The branching fraction determined for $B^0 \to K^0 p \bar{p}$ is $(2.82 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.10) \times 10^{-6}$, which is the most precise measurement to date.

Observation of the very rare $\Sigma^+ \to p \mu^+ \mu^-$ decay

The first observation of the $\Sigma^+ \to p \mu^+ \mu^-$ decay is reported with high significance using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\,\rm{fb}^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13~TeV. A yield of $237\pm 16$ $\Sigma^+ \to p \mu^+ \mu^-$ decays is obtained, where the uncertainty is statistical only. A branching fraction of $(1.08 \pm 0.17) \times 10^{-8}$ is measured, where the uncertainty includes statistical and systematic sources. No evidence of resonant structures is found in the dimuon invariant-mass distribution. All results are compatible with Standard Model expectations. This represents the rarest decay of a baryon ever observed.

Observation of the doubly-charmed-baryon decay ${\it \Xi}_{cc}^{++}\to{\it \Xi}_{c}^{0}\pi^{+}\pi^{+}$

A search for the doubly-charmed-baryon decay ${\it \Xi}_{cc}^{++}\to{\it \Xi}_{c}^{0}\pi^{+}\pi^{+}$ is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of $13\text{TeV}$ and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\text{fb}^{-1}$. A significant structure consistent with the ${\it \Xi}_{cc}^{++}$ baryon is observed in the ${\it \Xi}_{c}^{0} \pi^{+}\pi^{+}$ invariant-mass spectrum. Using the ${\it \Xi}_{cc}^{++}\to{\it \Lambda}_{c}^{+}K^{-}\pi^{+}\pi^{+}$ decay as the normalisation channel, the branching fraction ratio, $\frac{{\cal B}({\it \Xi}_{cc}^{++} \to {\it \Xi}_{c}^{0}\pi^{+}\pi^{+})} {{\cal B}({\it \Xi}_{cc}^{++}\to{\it \Lambda}_{c}^{+} K^{-}\pi^{+}\pi^{+})}$, is measured to be $1.37\pm 0.18\text{(stat)} \pm 0.09\text{(syst)} \pm 0.35\text{(ext)}$. This measurement provides critical input for testing QCD factorisation methods in the weak decays of doubly-heavy baryons, particularly in quantifying nonperturbative effects such as final-state interactions and resonance contributions to the hadronisation process.

Search for the $B^+_c\rightarrow \chi_{c1}(3872)\pi^+$ decay

A search for the decay $B^+_c\rightarrow \chi_{c1}(3872)\pi^+$ is reported using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018 at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 $TeV$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9fb^{-1}$. No significant signal is observed. Using the decay $B^+_c\rightarrow \psi(2S)\pi^+$ as a normalisation channel, an upper limit for the ratio of branching fractions $$ \mathcal{R}^{\chi_{c1}(3872)}_{\psi(2S)} = \frac{\mathcal{B}_{B^+_c\rightarrow \chi_{c1}(3872)\pi^+}} {\mathcal{B}_{B^+_c\rightarrow \psi(2S)\pi^+}} \times \frac{\mathcal{B}_{\chi_{c1}(3872)\rightarrow J/\psi\pi^+\pi^-}} {\mathcal{B}_{\psi(2S)\rightarrow J/\psi \pi^+\pi^-}} < 0.05\,(0.06)\,, $$ is set at the 90\,(95)\% confidence level.

Observation of charge-parity symmetry breaking in baryon decays

The Standard Model of particle physics-the theory of particles and interactions at the smallest scale-predicts that matter and antimatter interact differently due to violation of the combined symmetry of charge conjugation ($C$) and parity ($P$). Charge conjugation transforms particles into their antimatter particles, whereas the parity transformation inverts spatial coordinates. This prediction applies to both mesons, which consist of a quark and an antiquark, and baryons, which are composed of three quarks. However, despite having been discovered in various meson decays, $CP$ violation has yet to be observed in baryons, the type of matter that makes up the observable Universe. Here we report a study of the decay of the beauty baryon $\Lambda^{0}_{b}$ to the $p K^{-} \pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ final state and its $CP$-conjugated process, using data collected by the Large Hadron Collider beauty experiment at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). The results reveal significant asymmetries between the decay rates of the $\Lambda^{0}_{b}$ baryon and its $CP$-conjugated antibaryon, providing, to our knowledge, the first observation of $CP$ violation in baryon decays and demonstrating the different behaviours of baryons and antibaryons. In the Standard Model, $CP$ violation arises from the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism, and new forces or particles beyond the Standard Model could provide additional contributions. This discovery opens a new path in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Branching fraction measurement of the decay $B^+ \to \psi(2S) \phi(1020) K^+$

The branching fraction of the decay $B^+\to \psi(2S)\phi(1020)K^+$, relative to the topologically similar decay $B^+\to J/\psi \phi(1020) K^+$, is measured using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. The ratio is found to be $0.061 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.009$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Using the world-average branching fraction for $B^+ \to J/\psi \phi(1020) K^+$, the branching fraction for the decay $B^+\to \psi(2S) \phi(1020) K^+$ is found to be $ (3.0 \pm 0.2 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-6}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third is due to the branching fraction of the normalization channel.

Observation of a new charmed baryon decaying to $\Xi_c^+ \pi^- \pi^+$

The $\Xi_c^+ \pi^- \pi^+$ spectrum is investigated using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment during 2016--2018. Four states are observed with high significance, and their masses and widths are measured to be \begin{align*} m[\Xi_c(2815)^{+}] &= 2816.65 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.23 ~\text{MeV}, \Gamma[\Xi_c(2815)^{+}] &= 2.07 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.12~\text{MeV},\\[5pt] m[\Xi_c(2923)^{+}] &= 2922.8 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.2~\text{MeV}, \Gamma[\Xi_c(2923)^{+}] &= 5.3 \pm 0.9 \pm 1.4~\text{MeV},\\[5pt] m[\Xi_c(2970)^{+}] &= 2968.6 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.2~\text{MeV}, \Gamma[\Xi_c(2970)^{+}] &= 31.7 \pm 1.7 \pm 1.9~\text{MeV},\\[5pt] m[\Xi_c(3080)^{+}] &= 3076.8 \pm 0.7 \pm 1.3 \pm 0.2~\text{MeV}, \Gamma[\Xi_c(3080)^{+}] &= 6.8 \pm 2.3 \pm 0.9~\text{MeV}, \end{align*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the limited precision on the $\Xi_c^+$ mass, respectively. The $\Xi_c(2923)^{+}$ baryon is observed for the first time, and is consistent with being the isospin partner of the previously observed $\Xi_c(2923)^{0}$ state. Most of the measured parameters are more precise than existing world averages.

Angular analysis of $B^0\rightarrow K^{*0}e^{+}e^{-}$ decays

An angular analysis of $B^0\rightarrow K^{*0}e^{+}e^{-}$ decays is presented using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$. The analysis is performed in the region of the dilepton invariant mass squared of 1.1-6.0 GeV$^{2}/c^{4}$. In addition, a test of lepton flavour universality is performed by comparing the obtained angular observables with those measured in $B^0\rightarrow K^{*0}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ decays. In general, the angular observables are found to be consistent with the Standard Model expectations as well as with global analyses of other $b \rightarrow s \ell^{+} \ell^{-}$ processes, where $\ell$ is either a muon or an electron. No sign of lepton-flavour-violating effects is observed.

Search for resonance-enhanced $CP$ and angular asymmetries in the $\Lambda^+_{c}\to p\mu^+\mu^-$ decay at LHCb

The first measurement of the $CP$ asymmetry of the decay rate ($A_{CP}$) and the $CP$ average ($\Sigma A_{\text{FB}}$) and $CP$ asymmetry ($\Delta A_{\text{FB}}$) of the forward-backward asymmetry in the muon system of $\mathit{\Lambda}^+_c\to p\mu^+\mu^-$ decays is reported. The measurement is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions, recorded by the LHCb experiment from 2016 to 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13$\text{ TeV}$, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.4$\text{ fb}^{-1}$. The asymmetries are measured in two regions of dimuon mass near the $\phi$-meson mass peak. The dimuon-mass integrated results are \begin{align*} A_{CP} &= (-1.1 \pm 4.0 \pm 0.5)\%,\\ \Sigma A_{\text{FB}} &= (\phantom{-}3.9 \pm 4.0 \pm 0.6)\%,\\ \Delta A_{\text{FB}} &= (\phantom{-}3.1 \pm 4.0 \pm 0.4)\%, \end{align*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The results are consistent with the conservation of $CP$ symmetry and the Standard Model expectations.

Evidence for $B^-\rightarrow D^{**0}\tau^-\overline{\nu_{\tau}}$ decays

The first evidence for the decay $B^-\rightarrow D^{**0}\tau^-\overline{\nu_{\tau}}$ is obtained using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$ , at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 Tev. Here, the $D^{**0}$ meson represents any of the three excited charm mesons $D_{1}(2420)^{0}$, $D_{2}^{*}(2460)^{0}$, and $D_{1}^{'}(2400)^{0}$. The $B^-\rightarrow D^{**0}\tau^-\overline{\nu_{\tau}}$ signal is measured with a significance of 3.5 $\sigma$, including systematic uncertainties. The combined branching fraction $BR(B^-\rightarrow D^{**0}_{1,2}\tau^-\overline{\nu_{\tau}})\times BR(D^{**0}_{1,2}\rightarrow D^{*+}\pi^-)$, where $D^{**0}_{1,2}$ denotes both $D_{1}(2420)^{0}$ and $D_{2}^{*}(2460)^{0}$ contributions, is measured to be $(0.051\pm0.013(stat)\pm 0.006(syst)\pm 0.009(\rm{ext}) )\%$, where the last uncertainty reflects that of the branching fraction of the normalisation channel $B^-\rightarrow D^{**0}_{1,2}D_s^{(*)-}$. The ratio between the tauonic and muonic semileptonic $B$ decays, with the latter taken from world average values, is also determined and found to be ${\cal R}(D^{**0}_{1,2})=0.13\pm0.03(stat)\pm0.01(syst)\pm0.02\,(\rm{ext})$.

Measurement of the multiplicity dependence of $\mit\Upsilon$ production ratios in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

The $\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{2}S)$ and $\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{3}S)$ production cross-sections are measured relative to that of the $\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{1}S)$ meson, as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $13$ TeV. The measurement uses data collected by the LHCb experiment in 2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 $\text{fb}^{-1}$. Both the $\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{2}S)$-to-$\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{1}S)$ and $\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{3}S)$-to-$\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{1}S)$ cross-section ratios are found to decrease significantly as a function of event multiplicity, with the $\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{3}S)$-to-$\mit{\Upsilon}(\mathrm{1}S)$ ratio showing a steeper decline towards high multiplicity. This hierarchy is qualitatively consistent with the comover model predictions, indicating that final-state interactions play an important role in bottomonia production in high-multiplicity events.
