Quantum phases of tilted dipolar bosons in two-dimensional optical lattice

We consider a minimal model to describe the quantum phases of ultracold dipolar bosons in two-dimensional (2D) square optical lattices. The model is a variation of the extended Bose-Hubbard model and apt to study the quantum phases arising from the variation in the tilt angle $θ$ of the dipolar bosons. At low tilt angles $0^{\circ}\leqslantθ\apprle25^{\circ}$, the ground state of the system are phases with checkerboard order, which could be either checkerboard supersolid or checkerboard density wave. For high tilt angles $55^{\circ}\apprgeθ\apprge35^{\circ}$, phases with striped order of supersolid or density wave are preferred. In the intermediate domain $25^{\circ}\apprleθ\apprle35^{\circ}$ an emulsion or SF phase intervenes the transition between the checkerboard and striped phases. The attractive interaction dominates for $θ\apprge55^{\circ}$, which renders the system unstable and there is a density collapse. For our studies we use Gutzwiller mean-field theory to obtain the quantum phases and the phase boundaries. In addition, we calculate the phase boundaries between an incompressible and a compressible phase of the system by considering second order perturbation analysis of the mean-field theory. The analytical results, where applicable, are in excellent agreement with the numerical results.

Dynamics of the creation of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate by two-photon Raman transition using Laguerre-Gaussian pulse

We examine the dynamics associated with the creation of a vortex in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), from another nonrotating BEC using two-photon Raman transition with Gaussian (G) and Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) laser pulses. In particular, we consider BEC of Rb atoms at their hyperfine ground states confined in a quasi two dimensional harmonic trap. Optical dipole potentials created by G and LG laser pulses modify the harmonic trap in such a way that density profiles of the condensates during the Raman transition process depend on the sign of the generated vortex. We investigate the role played by the Raman coupling parameter manifested through dimensionless peak Rabi frequency and intercomponent interaction on the dynamics of the population transfer process and on the final population of the rotating condensate. During the Raman transition process, the two BECs tend to have larger overlap with each other for stronger intercomponent interaction strength.

Enhancement of the Bose glass phase in the presence of an artificial gauge field

We examine the effects of an artificial gauge field and finite temperature in a two-dimensional disordered Bose-Hubbard model. The disorder considered is diagonal and quenched in nature. A signature of disorder in the Bose-Hubbard model is the Bose glass phase. Our work shows that the introduction of an artificial gauge field enhances the domain of the Bose glass phase in the phase diagram. Most importantly, the size of the domain can be tuned with the strength of the artificial gauge field. The introduction of the finite temperature effects is essential to relate theoretical results with the experimental realizations. For our studies we use the single site and cluster Gutzwiller mean-field theories. The results from the latter are more reliable as it better describes the correlation effects. Our results show that the Bose glass phase has a larger domain with the latter method.

Electric dipole polarizability of group-IIIA ions using PRCC: Large correlation effects from nonlinear terms

We compute the ground-state electric dipole polarizability of group-IIIA ions using the perturbed relativistic coupled-cluster (PRCC) theory. To account for the relativistic effects and QED corrections, we use the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian with the corrections from the Uehling potential and the self-energy. The effects of triple excitations are considered perturbatively in the PRCC. Our PRCC results for $α$ are good in agreement with the previous theoretical results for all the ions. From our computations we find that the nonlinear terms in PRCC have significant contributions and must be included to obtain the accurate value of $α$ for group-IIIA ions. For the correction from the Breit interaction, we find that it is largest for Al$^+$ and decreases as we go towards the heavier ions. The corrections from the vacuum polarization and the self-energy increase from lighter to heavier ions.

Bosonic quantum Hall states in single-layer two-dimensional optical lattices

Quantum Hall (QH) states of 2D single layer optical lattices are examined using Bose-Hubbard model (BHM) in presence of artificial gauge field. We study the QH states of both the homogeneous and inhomogeneous systems. For the homogeneous case we use cluster Gutzwiller mean field (CGMF) theory with cluster sizes ranging from $2\times 2$ to $5\times 5$. We, then, consider the inhomogeneous case, which is relevant to experimental realization. In this case, we use CGMF and exact diagonalization (ED). The ED studies are using lattice sizes ranging from $3\times 3$ to $4\times 12$. Our results show that the geometry of the QH states are sensitive to the magnetic flux $α$ and cluster sizes. For homogeneous system, among various combinations of $1/5\leqslant α\leqslant 1/2$ and filling factor $ν$, only the QH state of $α=1/4$ with $ν=1/2$, $1$, $3/2$ and $2$ occur as ground states. For other combinations, the competing superfluid (SF) state is the ground state and QH state is metastable. For BHM with envelope potential all the QH states observed in homogeneous system exist for box potentials, but none for the harmonic potential. The QH states also persist for very shallow Gaussian envelope potential. As a possible experimental signature we study the two point correlations of the QH and SF states.

Condensates in double-well potential with synthetic gauge potentials and vortex seeding

We demonstrate an enhancement in the vortex generation when artificial gauge potential is introduced to condensates confined in a double well potential. This is due to the lower energy required to create a vortex in the low condensate density region within the barrier. Furthermore, we study the transport of vortices between the two wells, and show that the traverse time for vortices is longer for the lower height of the well. We also show that the critical value of synthetic magnetic field to inject vortices into the bulk of the condensate is lower in the double-well potential compared to the harmonic confining potential.

Collective modes in multicomponent condensates with anisotropy

We report the effects of anisotropy in the confining potential on two component Bose-Einstein condensates (TBECs) through the properties of the low energy quasiparticle excitations. Starting from generalized Gross Pitaevskii equation, we obtain the Bogoliubov de-Gennes (BdG) equation for TBECs using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theory. Based on this theory, we present the influence of radial anisotropy on TBECs in the immiscible or the phase-separated domain. In particular, the TBECs of $^{85}$Rb~-$^{87}$Rb and $^{133}$Cs~-$^{87}$Rb TBECs are chosen as specific examples of the two possible interface geometries, shell-structured and side by side, in the immiscible domain. We also show that the dispersion relation for the TBEC shell-structured interface has two branches, and anisotropy modifies the energy scale and structure of the two branches.

Dynamics of phase separation in two species Bose-Einstein condensates with vortices

We examine the dynamics associated with the miscibility-immiscibility transition of trapped two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (TBECs) of dilute atomic gases in presence of vortices. In particular, we consider TBECs of Rb hyperfine states, and Rb-Cs mixture. There is an enhancement of the phase-separation when the vortex is present in both condensates. In the case of a singly charged vortex in only one of the condensates, there is enhancement when the vortex is present in the species which occupy the edges at phase-separation. But, suppression occurs when the vortex is in the species which occupies the core region. To examine the role of the vortex, we quench the inter-species interactions to propel the TBEC from miscible to immiscible phase, and use the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation to probe the phenomenon of phase-separation. We also examine the effect of higher charged vortex.

RCCPAC: A parallel relativistic coupled-cluster program for closed-shell and one-valence atoms and ions in FORTRAN

We report the development of a parallel FORTRAN code, RCCPAC, to solve the relativistic coupled-cluster equations for closed-shell and one-valence atoms and ions. The parallelization is implemented through the use of message passing interface, which is suitable for distributed memory computers. The coupled-cluster equations are defined in terms of the reduced matrix elements, and solved iteratively using Jacobi method. The ground and excited states coupled-cluster wave functions obtained from the code could be used to compute different properties of closed-shell and one-valence atom or ion. As an example we compute the ground state correlation energy, attachment energies, $E$1 reduced matrix elements and hyperfine structure constants.

Bifurcations, stability, and mode evolution in segregated condensate mixtures

We present new features of low energy Bogoliubov quasiparticle excitations of a two component Bose-Einstein condensate (TBEC) in quasi-2D geometry at zero temperature using Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB). We, in particular, consider the TBECs of $^{133}$Cs~-$^{87}$Rb and $^{85}$Rb~-$^{87}$Rb, and show specific features in the low energy excitation spectrum as a function of the interaction strength. For $^{85}$Rb~-$^{87}$Rb TBEC, the appearance of a new zero energy mode is observed. Whereas for $^{133}$Cs~-$^{87}$Rb TBEC we report a bifurcation of the softened Kohn mode at the point of transition from miscible to immiscible domain. The lower energy mode, after the bifurcation, goes soft and becomes a new Goldstone mode of the system.

Finite temperature expansion dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates

We explore the effects of finite temperature on the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) after it is released from the confining potential. In addition, we examine the variation in the expansion dynamics of the BECs as the confining potential is transformed from a multiply to a simply connected geometry. To include the effects of finite temperatures we use the frozen thermal cloud approximation, and observe unique features of the condensate density distribution when released from the confining potential. We find that at $T\neq 0$, during the initial stages of expansion, the multiply connected condensate has more pronounced interference rings compared to the case of zero temperature. Such difference in the dynamical evolution is also evident for simply connected condensates.

Geometry-induced modification of fluctuation spectrum in quasi-two-dimensional condensates

We report the structural transformation of the low-lying spectral modes, especially the Kohn mode, from radial to circular topology as harmonic confining potential is modified to a toroidal one, and this corresponds to a transition from simply to multiply connected geometry. For this we employ the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory to examine the evolution of low energy quasiparticles. We, then, use the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with the Popov approximation to demonstrate the two striking features of quantum and thermal fluctuations. At $T=0$, the non-condensate density due to interaction induced quantum fluctuations increases with the transformation from pancake to toroidal geometry. The other feature is, there is a marked change in the density profile of the non-condensate density at finite temperatures with the modification of trapping potential. In particular, the condensate and non-condensate density distributions have overlapping maxima in the toroidal condensate, which is in stark contrast to the case of pancake geometry. The genesis of this difference lies in the nature of the thermal fluctuations.

Ramifications of topology and thermal fluctuations in quasi-2D condensates

We explore the topological transformation of quasi-2D Bose-Einstein condensates of dilute atomic gases, and changes in the low-energy quasiparticles associated with the geometry of the confining potential. In particular, we show the density profile of the condensate and quantum fluctuation follow the transition from a multiply to a simply connected geometry of the confining potential. The thermal fluctuations, in contrast, remain multiply connected. The genesis of the key difference lies in the structure of the low-energy quasiparticles. For which we use the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov, and study the evolution of quasiparticles, the dipole or the Kohn mode in particular. We, then employ the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with the Popov approximation to investigate the density and the momentum distribution of the thermal atoms.

Optical lattice influenced geometry of quasi-2D binary condensates and quasiparticle spectra

We explore the collective excitations of optical lattices filled with two-species Bose-Einstein condensates (TBECs). We use a set of coupled discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations to describe the system, and employ Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theory with the Popov approximation to analyze the quasiparticle spectra at zero temperature. The ground state geometry, evolution of quasiparticle energies, structure of quasiparticle amplitudes, and dispersion relations are examined in detail. The trends observed are in stark contrast to the case of TBECs only with a harmonic confining potential. One key observation is the quasiparticle energies are softened as the system is tuned towards phase separation, but harden after phase separation and mode degeneracies are lifted.

Thermal suppression of phase separation in condensate mixtures

We examine the role of thermal fluctuations in binary condensate mixtures of dilute atomic gases. In particular, we use Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov with Popov approximation to probe the impact of non-condensate atoms to the phenomenon of phase-separation in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. We demonstrate that, in comparison to $T=0$, there is a suppression in the phase-separation of the binary condensates at $T\neq0$. This arises from the interaction of the condensate atoms with the thermal cloud. We also show that, when $T\neq0$ it is possible to distinguish the phase-separated case from miscible from the trends in the correlation function. However, this is not the case at $T=0$.

Observation of the nuclear magnetic octupole moment of $^{173}$Yb from precise measurements of hyperfine structure in the ${^3P}_2$ state

We measure hyperfine structure in the metastable ${^3P}_2$ state of $^{173}$Yb and extract the nuclear magnetic octupole moment. We populate the state using dipole-allowed transitions through the ${^3P}_1$ and ${^3S}_1$ states. We measure frequencies of hyperfine transitions of the ${^3P}_2 \rightarrow {^3S}_1$ line at 770 nm using a Rb-stabilized ring cavity resonator with a precision of 200 kHz. Second-order corrections due to perturbations from the nearby ${^3P}_1$ and ${^1P}_1$ states are below 30 kHz. We obtain the hyperfine coefficients as: $A=-742.11(2)$ MHz, $B=1339.2(2)$ MHz, which represent two orders-of-magnitude improvement in precision, and $C=0.54(2)$ MHz. From atomic structure calculations, we obtain the nuclear moments: quadrupole $Q=2.46(12)$ b and octupole $Ω=-34.4(21)$ b\,$\times μ_N$.

Evolution of Goldstone mode in binary condensate mixtures

We show that the third Goldstone mode in the two-species condensate mixtures, which emerges at phase-separation, gets hardened when the confining potentials have separated trap centers. The {\em sandwich} type condensate density profiles, in this case, acquire a {\em side-by-side} density profile configuration. We use Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Popov approximation to examine the mode evolution and density profiles for these phase transitions at $T=0$.

Fluctuation driven topological transition of binary condensates in optical lattices

We show the emergence of a third Goldstone mode in binary condensates at the phase-separation in quasi-1D optical lattices. We develop the coupled discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations (DNLSEs) using Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Popov approximation in the Bose-Hubbard model to investigate the mode evolution at zero temperature. In particular, as the system is driven from miscible to immiscible phase. We demonstrate that the position swapping of the species in $^{87}$Rb-$^{85}$Rb system is accompanied by a discontinuity in the excitation spectrum. Our results show that in quasi-1D optical lattices, the presence of the fluctuations dramatically change the geometry of the ground state density profile of TBEC.
