Fermi surface in the hidden-order state of URu$_2$Si$_2$ under intense pulsed magnetic fields up to 81~T

We present measurements of the resistivity $ρ_{x,x}$ of URu2Si2 high-quality single crystals in pulsed high magnetic fields up to 81~T at a temperature of 1.4~K and up to 60~T at temperatures down to 100~mK. For a field \textbf{H} applied along the magnetic easy-axis \textbf{c}, a strong sample-dependence of the low-temperature resistivity in the hidden-order phase is attributed to a high carrier mobility. The interplay between the magnetic and orbital properties is emphasized by the angle-dependence of the phase diagram, where magnetic transition fields and crossover fields related to the Fermi surface properties follow a 1/$\cosθ$-law, $θ$ being the angle between \textbf{H} and \textbf{c}. For $\mathbf{H}\parallel\mathbf{c}$, a crossover defined at a kink of $ρ_{x,x}$, as initially reported in [Shishido et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{102}, 156403 (2009)], is found to be strongly sample-dependent: its characteristic field $μ_0H^*$ varies from $\simeq20$~T in our best sample with a residual resistivity ratio RRR of $225$ to $\simeq25$~T in a sample with a RRR of $90$. A second crossover is defined at the maximum of $ρ_{x,x}$ at the sample-independent characteristic field $μ_0H_{ρ,max}^{LT}\simeq30$~T. Fourier analyzes of SdH oscillations show that $H_{ρ,max}^{LT}$ coincides with a sudden modification of the Fermi surface, while $H^*$ lies in a regime where the Fermi surface is smoothly modified. For $\mathbf{H}\parallel\mathbf{a}$, i) no phase transition is observed at low temperature and the system remains in the hidden-order phase up to 81~T, ii) quantum oscillations surviving up to 7~K are related to a new and almost-spherical orbit - for the first time observed here - at the frequency $F_λ\simeq1400$~T and associated with a low effective mass $m^*_λ=(1\pm0.5)\cdot m_0$, and iii) no Fermi surface modification occurs up to 81~T.

Magnetic order in Ce0.95Nd0.05CoIn5: the Q-phase at zero magnetic field

We report neutron scattering experiment results revealing the nature of the magnetic order occurring in the heavy fermion superconductor Ce0.95Nd0.05CoIn5, a case for which an antiferromagnetic state is stabilized at a temperature below the superconducting transition one. We evidence an incommensurate order and its propagation vector is found to be identical to that of the magnetic field induced antiferromagnetic order occurring in the stoichiometric superconductor CeCoIn5, the so-called Q-phase. The commonality between these two cases suggests that superconductivity is a requirement for the formation of this kind of magnetic order and the proposed mechanism is the enhancement of nesting condition by d-wave order parameter with nodes in the nesting area.

Strong Pauli-limiting behavior of $H_{c2}$ and uniaxial pressure dependencies in KFe2As2

KFe2As2 single crystals are studied using specific-heat, high-resolution thermal-expansion, magnetization, and magnetostriction measurements. The magnetization and magnetostriction data provide clear evidence for strong Pauli limiting effects for magnetic fields parallel to the FeAs planes, suggesting that KFe2As2 may be a good candidate to search for the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. Using standard thermodynamic relations, the uniaxial pressure derivatives of the critical temperature ($T_{c}$), the normal-state Sommerfeld coefficient ($γ_{n}$), the normal-state susceptibility ($χ$), and the thermodynamic critical field ($H_{c}$) are calculated from our data. We find that the close relationship between doping and pressure as found in other Fe-based systems does not hold for KFe2As2.

Metamagnetic Transition in UCoAl Probed by Thermoelectricity Measurements

We report field and temperature dependent measurements of the thermoelectric power (TEP) and the Nernst effect in the itinerant metamagnet UCoAl. The magnetic field is applied along the easy magnetization c-axis in the hexagonal crystal structure. The metamagnetic transition from the paramagnetic phase at zero field to the field induced ferromagnetic (FM) state is of first order at low temperatures and becomes a broad crossover above the critical temperature $T^{\star}_{M} \sim 11$ K. The field-dependence of the TEP reveals that the effective mass of the hole carriers changes significantly at the metamagnetic transition. The TEP experiment reflects the existence of different carrier types in good agreement with band structure calculations and previous Hall effect experiments. According to the temperature dependence of the TEP, no Fermi liquid behavior appears in the paramagnetic state down to 150 mK, but is achieved only in the field induced ferromagnetic state.

Evidence of Strong Correlations and Coherence-Incoherence Crossover in the Iron Pnictide Superconductor KFe2As2

Using resistivity, heat-capacity, thermal-expansion, and susceptibility measurements we study the normal-state behavior of KFe2As2. We find that both the Sommerfeld coefficient gamma = 103 mJ mol-1 K-2 and the Pauli susceptibility chi = 4x10-4 are strongly enhanced, which confirm the existence of heavy quasiparticles inferred from previous de Haas-van Alphen and ARPES experiments. We discuss this large enhancement using a Gutzwiller slave-boson mean-field calculation, which reveals the proximity of KFe2As2 to an orbital-selective Mott transition. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the thermal expansion provide strong experimental evidence for the existence of a coherence-incoherence crossover, similar to what is found in heavy fermion and ruthenate compounds, due to Hund's coupling between orbitals.

High-field moment polarization in the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe

We report magnetization and magnetoresistivity measurements on the isostructural ferromagnetic superconductors UCoGe and URhGe in magnetic fields up to 60 T and temperatures from 1.5 to 80 K. At low-temperature, a moment polarization in UCoGe in a field $μ_0\mathbf{H}\parallel\mathbf{b}$ of around 50 T leads to well-defined anomalies in both magnetization and magnetoresistivity. These anomalies vanish in temperatures higher than 30-40 K, where maxima in the magnetic susceptibility and the field-induced variation of the magnetoresistivity are found. A comparison is made between UCoGe and URhGe, where a moment reorientation in a magnetic field $μ_0\mathbf{H}\parallel\mathbf{b}$ of 12 T leads to field-induced reentrant superconductivity.

Temperature dependent tunneling spectroscopy in the heavy fermion CeRu2Si2 and in the antiferromagnet CeRh2Si2

CeRu2Si2 and CeRh2Si2 are two similar heavy fermion stoichiometric compounds located on the two sides of the magnetic quantum critical phase transition. CeRh2Si2 is an antiferromagnet below T_N=36 K with moderate electronic masses whereas CeRu2Si2 is a paramagnetic metal with particularly heavy electrons. Here we present tunneling spectroscopy measurements as a function of temperature (from 0.15 K to 45 K). The tunneling conductance at 0.15 K reveals V-shaped dips around the Fermi level in both compounds, which disappear in CeRu2Si2 above the coherence temperature, and above the Néel temperature in CeRh2Si2. In the latter case, two different kinds of V-shaped tunneling conductance dips are found.

Tunneling spectroscopy of the superconducting state of URu2Si2

We present measurements of the superconducting gap of URu$_2$Si$_2$ made with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) using a superconducting tip of Al. We find tunneling conductance curves with a finite value at the Fermi level. The density of states is V shaped at low energies, and the quasiparticle peaks are located at values close to the expected superconducting gap from weak coupling BCS theory. Our results point to rather opened gap structures and gap nodes on the Fermi surface.

Heavy fermions in high magnetic field

We give an overview on experimental studies performed in the last 25 years on heavy-fermion systems in high magnetic field. The properties of field-induced magnetic transitions in heavy-fermion materials close to a quantum antiferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic instability are presented. Effects of a high magnetic field to the Fermi surface, in particular the splitting of spin-up and spin-down bands, are also considered. Finally, we review on recent advances on the study of non-centrosymmetric compounds and ferromagnetic superconductors in a high magnetic field.

Interplay of magnetism, Fermi surface reconstructions, and hidden-order in the heavy-fermion material URu$_2$Si$_2$

URu$_2$Si$_2$ is surely one of the most mysterious of the heavy-fermion compounds. Despite more than twenty years of experimental and theoretical works, the order parameter of the transition at $T_0 = 17.5$ K is still unknown. The state below $T_0$ remains called "hidden-order phase" and the stakes are still to identify the energy scales driving the system to this phase. We present new magnetoresistivity and magnetization measurements performed on very-high-quality single crystals in pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T. We show that the transition to the hidden-order state in URu$_2$Si$_2$ is initially driven by a high-temperature crossover at around 40-50 K, which is a fingerprint of inter-site electronic correlations. In a magnetic field $\mathbf{H}$ applied along the easy-axis $\bf{c}$, the vanishing of this high-temperature scale precedes the polarization of the magnetic moments, as well as it drives the destabilization of the hidden-order phase. Strongly impurity-dependent magnetoresistivity confirms that the Fermi surface is reconstructed below $T_0$ and is strongly modified in a high magnetic field applied along $\mathbf{c}$, i.e. at a sufficiently-high magnetic polarization. The possibility of a sharp crossover in the hidden-order state controlled by a field-induced change of the Fermi surface is pointed out.

Transverse and Longitudinal Magnetic-Field Responses in the Ising Ferromagnets URhGe, UCoGe and UGe2

The field dependence of the electronic specific heat gamma(H) of URhGe is determined using temperature-dependent magnetization measurements and Maxwell's relation for all three orthorhombic directions. A large (40 %) enhancement of gamma(H) is found at the reorientational transition for fields applied along the b hard axis, which we argue occurs when the field-induced moment is of the same size as the zero-field ordered moment M0. Fields applied along the easy direction, on the other hand, lead to a rapid suppression of gamma(H). We emphasize that this behavior is also applicable to the closely related ferromagnetic superconductors UCoGe and UGe2 and discuss implications for the novel field-induced/enhanced superconductivity in these materials.

Tricritical point and wing structure in the itinerant ferromagnet UGe2

Precise resistivity measurements on the ferromagnetic superconductor UGe2 under pressure p and magnetic field H reveal a previously unobserved change of the anomaly at the Curie temperature. Therefore, the tricritical point (TCP) where the paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transition changes from a second order to a first order transition is located in the p-T phase diagram. Moreover, the evolution of the TCP can be followed under the magnetic field in the same way. It is the first report of the boundary of the first order plane which appears in the p-T-H phase diagram of weak itinerant ferromagnets. This line of critical points starts from the TCP and will terminate at a quantum critical point. These measurements provide the first estimation of the location of the quantum critical point in the p-H plane and will inspire similar studies of the other weak itinerant ferromagnets.

Trends in Heavy Fermion Matter

A brief review on major advances in heavy fermion physics is presented including the Ce metal phase diagram, the huge effective mass detected in CeAl3, and the successive discoveries of unconventional superconductivity in CeCu2Si2 and three U based compounds, UBe13, UPt3 and URu2Si2. In order to track the origin of the huge effective mass, the case of intermediate valence compounds is discussed with emphasis of the differences between Yb and Ce materials. The formation of the effective mass is analyzed by two regular- and singular-part contributions. Examples are given for both, antiferromagnetic (CeRu2Si2 series) and ferromagnetic tricriticalities (UGe2). Pressure and magnetic-field studies on the ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe illustrate the role of the singular effective mass enhancement on the superconducting pairing. The discovery of the Ce-115 material gives the opportunity to study deeply the interplay of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. This is clearly demonstrated by field re-entrance AF inside the SC phase just below the superconducting upper critical field (Hc2) for CeCoIn5 or on both side of Hc2 within a restricted pressure window for CeRhIn5. The present status of the search for the hidden-order parameter of URu2Si2 is given and we emphasize that it may correspond to a lattice unit-cell doubling which leads to a drastic change in the band structure and spin dynamic, with the possibility of competition between multipolar ordering and antiferromagnetism.

Similarity of Fermi Surface in the Hidden Order State and in the Antiferromagnetic State of URu2Si2

Shubnikov-de Haas measurements of high quality URu2Si2 single crystals reveal two previously unobserved Fermi surface branches in the so-called hidden order phase. Therefore about 55% of the enhanced mass is now detected. Under pressure in the antiferromagnetic state, the Shubnikov-de Haas frequencies for magnetic fields applied along the crystalline c axis show little change compared with the zero pressure data. This implies a similar Fermi surface in both the hidden order and antiferromagnetic states, which strongly suggests that the lattice doubling in the antiferromagnetic phase due to the ordering vector QAF = (0 0 1) already occurs in the hidden order. These measurements provide a good test for existing or future theories of the hidden order parameter.

Convergence of the enhancement of the effective mass under pressure and magnetic field in heavy-fermion compounds: CeRu2Si2, CeRh2Si2, and CeIn3

Emphasis is given on the observation of a convergence to a critical value of the effective mass of a heavy fermion compound by tuning it through a quantum instability either by applying pressure or magnetic field from an antiferromagnetic (AF) to a paramagnetic (PM) ground state. Macroscopic and microscopic results are discussed and the main message is to rush to the discovery of an ideal material whose Fermi surface could be fully observed on both sides of each quantum phase transition.

High-field metamagnetism in the antiferromagnet CeRh$_2$Si$_2$

A study of the antiferromagnet CeRh$_2$Si$_2$ by torque, magnetostriction, and transport in pulsed magnetic fields up to 50 Tesla and by thermal expansion in static fields up to 13 Tesla is presented. The magnetic field-temperature phase diagram of CeRh$_2$Si$_2$, where the magnetic field is applied along the easy axis $\mathbf{c}$, is deduced from these measurements. The second-order phase transition temperature $T_{N}$ and the first-order phase transition temperature $T_{1,2}$ (=~36 K and 26 K at zero-field, respectively) decrease with increasing field. The field-induced antiferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic borderline $H_c$, which equals 26 T at 1.5 K, goes from first-order at low temperature to second-order at high temperature. The magnetic field-temperature phase diagram is found to be composed of (at least) three different antiferromagnetic phases. These are separated by the first-order lines $H_{1,2}$, corresponding to $T_{1,2}$ at H=0, and $H_{2,3}$, which equals 25.5 T at 1.5 K. A maximum of the $T^2$-coefficient $A$ of the resistivity is observed at the onset of the high-field polarized regime, which is interpreted as the signature of an enhanced effective mass at the field-induced quantum instability. The magnetic field dependence of the $A$ coefficient in CeRh$_2$Si$_2$ is compared with its pressure dependence, and also with the field dependence of $A$ in the prototypal heavy-fermion system CeRu$_2$Si$_2$.

Pressure-phase diagram of UCoGe by ac-susceptibility and resistivity measurements

UCoGe is one of the few compounds showing the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity at ambient pressure. With T_Curie = 3 K and T_SC = 0.6 K it is near a quantum phase transition; the pressure needed to suppress the magnetism is slightly higher than 1 GPa. We report simultaneous resistivity and ac-susceptibility measurements under pressure on a polycrystal with very large single-crystalline domains and a resistivity ratio of about 6. Both methods confirm the phase diagram established before by resistivity measurements on a polycrystal. The ferromagnetic phase is suppressed for P approximately 1.2 GPa. Astonishingly, the superconductivity persists at pressures up to at least 2.4 GPa. In other superconducting and ferromagnetic heavy fermion compounds like UGe2 and URhGe, the superconducting state is situated only inside the larger ferromagnetic region. Therefore, UCoGe seems to be the first example where superconductivity extends from the ferromagnetic to the paramagnetic region.

Mass Enhancement and Reentrant Ground State in Magnetic Field

Three different cases of magnetic field reentrant ground states in heavy fermion systems, URhGe, UGe$_2$ and CeRhIn$_5$ recently studied in Grenoble, are discussed. URhGe is a ferromagnetic superconductor with reentrace of superconductivity under magnetic field ($H$) which is associated to the spin reorientation field. UGe$_2$ is a ferromagnetic superconductor with an enhancement of the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ of superconductivity at its metamagnetic transition between 2 ferromagnetic phases. CeRhIn$_5$ is a superconductor with $H$ reentrant antiferromagnetism. We analyze the links between the $H$ enhancement of the different contributions to the effective mass and the field reentrant phase.
