The CLEO-c Research Program

The CLEO-c research program will include studies of leptonic, semileptonic and hadronic charm decays, searches for exotic and gluonic matter, and test for physics beyond the Standard Model. In the summer of 2003 the experiment and the CESR accelerator were modified to operate at center-of-mass energies between 3 and 5 GeV. Data at the psi(3770) resonance were recorded with the CLEO-c detector in September 2003. beginning a new era in the exploration of the charm sector.

New results for a photon-photon collider

We present new results from studies in progress on physics at a two-photon collider. We report on the sensitivity to top squark parameters of MSSM Higgs boson production in two-photon collisions; Higgs boson decay to two photons; radion production in models of warped extra dimensions; chargino pair production; sensitivity to the trilinear Higgs boson coupling; charged Higgs boson pair production; and we discuss the backgrounds produced by resolved photon-photon interactions.

Higgs Physics with a gamma gamma Collider Based on CLIC 1

We present the machine parameters and physics capabilities of the CLIC Higgs Experiment (CLICHE), a low-energy $γγ$ collider based on CLIC 1, the demonstration project for the higher-energy two-beam accelerator CLIC. CLICHE is conceived as a factory capable of producing around 20,000 light Higgs bosons per year. We discuss the requirements for the CLIC 1 beams and a laser backscattering system capable of producing a $γγ$ total (peak) luminosity of $2.0 (0.36) \times 10^{34}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ with $E_{CM}(γγ) \sim 115$ GeV. We show how CLICHE could be used to measure accurately the mass, $\bar b b$, $WW$ and $γγ$ decays of a light Higgs boson. We illustrate how these measurements may distinguish between the Standard Model Higgs boson and those in supersymmetric and more general two-Higgs-doublet models, complementing the measurements to be made with other accelerators. We also comment on other prospects in $γγ$ and $e^- γ$ physics with CLICHE.

Hadronic Structure in the Decay $τ^{-}\to ν_τπ^{-}π^{0}π^{0}$ and the Sign of the Tau Neutrino Helicity

Based on a sample corresponding to 4.3 million produced tau-pair events, we have studied hadronic dynamics in the decay tau- --> nu_tau pi- pi0 pi0 in data recorded by the CLEO II detector operating at the CESR e+e- collider. The decay is dominated by the process tau --> nu_tau a_1(1260), with the a_1 meson decaying to three pions predominantly via the lowest dimensional (mainly S-wave) a_1 --> rho pi Born amplitude. From fits to the Dalitz plot and angular observables, we find significant additional contributions from amplitudes for a_1 decay to sigma pi, f_0(1370) pi and f_2(1270) pi, as well as higher dimensional a_1 --> rho pi and rho' pi amplitudes. The squared sigma pi amplitude accounts for ~15% of the total tau- --> nu_tau pi- pi0 pi0 rate in the models considered. We have searched for additional contributions from tau --> nu_tau pi'(1300). We place 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fraction for this channel of between 1.0*10^{-4} and 1.9*10^{-4}, depending on the pi' decay mode. The pi- pi0 pi0 mass spectrum is parametrized by a Breit-Wigner form with a mass-dependent width which is specified according to the results of the Dalitz plot fits plus a coupling to an a_1 --> K* K amplitude. From a chi^2 fit, we extract the pole mass and width of the a_1, as well as the magnitude of the K* K coupling. We have also investigated the impact of a possible contribution from the a_1'(1700) meson on this spectrum. Finally, exploiting the parity-violating angular asymmetry in a_1 --> 3pi decay, we determine the signed value of the tau neutrino helicity to be h_{ν_τ} = -1.02 +- 0.13(stat.) +- 0.03(syst.+model), confirming the left-handedness of the tau neutrino.

Radiative Decay Modes of the $D^{0}$ Meson

Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR we have searched for four radiative decay modes of the $D^0$ meson: $D^0\toϕγ$, $D^0\toωγ$, $D^0\to\bar{K}^{*}γ$, and $D^0\toρ^0γ$. We obtain 90% CL upper limits on the branching ratios of these modes of $1.9\times 10^{-4}$, $2.4\times 10^{-4}$, $7.6\times 10^{-4}$ and $2.4\times 10^{-4}$ respectively.
