Precision measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters with 10 years of data from the NOvA experiment

This Letter reports measurements of muon-neutrino disappearance and electron-neutrino appearance and the corresponding antineutrino processes between the two NOvA detectors in the NuMI neutrino beam. These measurements use a dataset with double the neutrino mode beam exposure that was previously analyzed, along with improved simulation and analysis techniques. A joint fit to these samples in the three-flavor paradigm results in the most precise single-experiment constraint on the atmospheric neutrino mass splitting, $Δm^2_{32}= 2.431^{+0.036}_{-0.034} (-2.479^{+0.036}_{-0.036}) \times 10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV}^2$ if the mass ordering is normal (inverted). In both orderings, a region close to maximal mixing with $\sin^2 θ_{23}=0.55^{+0.02}_{-0.06}$ is preferred. The NOvA data show a mild preference for the normal mass ordering with a Bayes factor of 2.4 (corresponding to 70% of the posterior probability), indicating that the normal ordering is 2.4 times more probable than the inverted ordering. When incorporating a 2D $Δm^2_{32}\text{--}\sin^2 2θ_{13}$ constraint based on Daya Bay data, this preference strengthens to a Bayes factor of 6.6 (87%).

Joint neutrino oscillation analysis from the T2K and NOvA experiments

The landmark discovery that neutrinos have mass and can change type (or "flavor") as they propagate -- a process called neutrino oscillation -- has opened up a rich array of theoretical and experimental questions being actively pursued today. Neutrino oscillation remains the most powerful experimental tool for addressing many of these questions, including whether neutrinos violate charge-parity (CP) symmetry, which has possible connections to the unexplained preponderance of matter over antimatter in the universe. Oscillation measurements also probe the mass-squared differences between the different neutrino mass states ($Δm^2$), whether there are two light states and a heavier one (normal ordering) or vice versa (inverted ordering), and the structure of neutrino mass and flavor mixing. Here, we carry out the first joint analysis of data sets from NOvA and T2K, the two currently operating long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments (hundreds of kilometers of neutrino travel distance), taking advantage of our complementary experimental designs and setting new constraints on several neutrino sector parameters. This analysis provides new precision on the $Δm^2_{32}$ mass difference, finding $2.43^{+0.04}_{-0.03}\ \left(-2.48^{+0.03}_{-0.04}\right)\times 10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV}^2$ in the normal (inverted) ordering, as well as a $3σ$ interval on $δ_{\rm CP}$ of $[-1.38π,\ 0.30π]$ $\left([-0.92π,\ -0.04π]\right)$ in the normal (inverted) ordering. The data show no strong preference for either mass ordering, but notably if inverted ordering were assumed true within the three-flavor mixing paradigm, then our results would provide evidence of CP symmetry violation in the lepton sector.

Sharp estimates for the covering numbers of the Weierstrass fractal kernel

In this paper, we present sharp estimates for the covering numbers of the embedding of the reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) associated with the Weierstrass fractal kernel into the space of continuous functions. The method we apply is based on the characterization of the infinite-dimensional RKHS generated by the Weierstrass fractal kernel and it requires estimates for the norm operator of orthogonal projections on the RKHS.

The CLIC Potential for New Physics

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a mature option for the future of high energy physics. It combines the benefits of the clean environment of $e^+e^-$ colliders with operation at high centre-of-mass energies, allowing to probe scales beyond the reach of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for many scenarios of new physics. This places the CLIC project at a privileged spot in between the precision and energy frontiers, with capabilities that will significantly extend knowledge on both fronts at the end of the LHC era. In this report we review and revisit the potential of CLIC to search, directly and indirectly, for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Partial (Co)Actions of Multiplier Hopf Algebras: Morita and Galois Theories

In this work we deal with partial (co)action of multiplier Hopf algebras on not necessarily unital algebras. Our main goal is to construct a Morita context relating the coinvariant algebra $R^{\underline{coA}}$ with a certain subalgebra of the smash product $R\#\widehat{A}$. Besides this we present the notion of partial Galois coaction, which is closely related to this Morita context.

CP tests of Higgs couplings in $t\bar{t}h$ semileptonic events at the LHC

The CP nature of the Higgs coupling to top quarks is addressed in this paper, in single charged lepton final states of $t\bar{t}h$ events produced in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Pure scalar ($h=H$) and pseudo-scalar ($h=A$) Higgs boson signal events, generated with MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, are fully reconstructed using a kinematic fit. Angular distributions of the decay products, as well as CP-sensitive asymmetries, are exploited to separate and gain sensitivity to possible pseudo-scalar components of the Higgs boson and reduce the contribution from the dominant irreducible background $t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$. Significant differences are found between the pure CP-even and -odd signal hypotheses as well as with respect to the Standard Model background, in particular the $t\bar{t} b\bar{b}$ contribution. Such differences survive the event reconstruction, allowing to define optimal observables to extract the Higgs couplings parameters from a global fit. A dedicated analysis is applied to efficiently identify signal events and reject as much as possible the expected Standard Model background. The results obtained are compared with a similar analysis in the dilepton channel. We show that the single lepton channel is more promising overall and can be used in combination to study the CP nature of the Higgs coupling to top quarks.

Equivalence of modes of convergence on reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces

Let $(X,μ)$ be a strictly-positive Borel measure space. We show that the modes of convergence in a reproducing kernel Hilbert (RKHS) space, pointwise, weak and strong are all equivalents. From this we describe some important consequences such as an association with positive operators and positive definite kernels and a compact embedding condition for a RKHS in $L^{2}(X,μ)$.

Dynamical Casimir effect with Robin boundary conditions in a three dimensional open cavity

We consider a massless scalar field in 1+1 dimensions inside a cavity composed by a fixed plate, which imposes on the field a Robin BC, and an oscillating one, which imposes on the field a Dirichlet BC. Assuming that the plate moves for a finite time interval, and considering parametric resonance, we compute the total number of created particles inside the cavity. We generalize our results to the case of two parallel plates in 3+1 dimensions.
