Aerogel Waveplates

Optical transmission measurements were made on 98% porosity silica aerogel samples under various degrees of uniaxial strain. Uniaxially compressed aerogels exhibit large birefringence, proportional to the amount of compression, up to the 15% strain studied. The birefringence is mostly reversible and reproducible through multiple compression-decompression cycles. Our study demonstrates that uniaxially strained high porosity aerogels can be used as tunable waveplates in a broad spectral range.

Bosonic spectral density of epitaxial thin-film La1.83Sr0.17CuO4 superconductors from infrared conductivity measurements

We use optical spectroscopy to investigate the excitations responsible for the structure in the optical self-energy of thin epitaxial films of La1.83Sr0.17CuO4. Using Eliashberg formalism to invert the optical spectra we extract the electron-boson spectral function and find that at low temperature it has a two component structure closely matching the spin excitation spectrum recently measured by magnetic neutron scattering. We contrast the temperature evolution of the spectral density and the two-peak behavior in La2-xSrxCuO4 with another high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d. The bosonic spectral functions of the two materials account for the low Tc of LSCO as compared to Bi-2212.

The unusual thickness dependence of superconductivity in $α$-MoGe thin films

Thin films of $α$-MoGe show progressively reduced $T_{c}$'s as the thickness is decreased below 30 nm and the sheet resistance exceeds 100 $Ω/\Box$. We have performed far-infrared transmission and reflection measurements for a set of $α$-MoGe films to characterize this weakened superconducting state. Our results show the presence of an energy gap with ratio $2Δ_0/k_BT_{c} = 3.8 \pm 0.1$ in all films studied, slightly higher than the BCS value, even though the transition temperatures decrease significantly as film thickness is reduced. The material properties follow BCS-Eliashberg theory with a large residual scattering rate except that the coherence peak seen in the optical scattering rate is found to be strongly smeared out in the thinner superconducting samples. A peak in the optical mass renormalization at $2Δ_0$ is predicted and observed for the first time.

Resonantly Enhanced Axion-Photon Regeneration

We point out that photon regeneration-experiments that search for the axion, or axion-like particles, may be resonantly enhanced by employing matched Fabry-Perot optical cavities encompassing both the axion production and conversion magnetic field regions. Compared to a simple photon regeneration experiment, which uses the laser in a single-pass geometry, this technique can result in a gain in rate of order ${\cal F}^2$, where ${\cal F}$ is the finesse of the cavities. This gain could feasibly be $10^{(10-12)}$, corresponding to an improvement in sensitivity in the axion-photon coupling, $g_{aγγ}$ , of order ${\cal F}^{1/2} \sim 10^{(2.5-3)}$, permitting a practical purely laboratory search to probe axion-photon couplings not previously excluded by stellar evolution limits, or solar axion searches.

Study of charge dynamics in transparent single-walled carbon nanotube films

We report the transmission over a wide frequency range (far infrared - visible) of pristine and hole-doped, free-standing carbon nanotube films at temperatures between 50 K and 300 K. Optical constants are estimated by Kramers-Kronig analysis of transmittance. We see evidence in the far infrared for a gap below 10 meV. Hole doping causes a shift of spectral weight from the first interband transition into the far infrared. Temperature dependence in both the doped and undoped samples is restricted to the far-infrared region.

A High Resolution Search for Dark-Matter Axions

We have performed a high resolution search for galactic halo axions in cold flows using a microwave cavity detector. The analysis procedure and other details of this search are described. No axion signal was found in the mass range 1.98-2.17 micro-eV. We place upper limits on the density of axions in local discrete flows based on this result.

Results of a Search for Cold Flows of Dark Matter Axions

Theoretical arguments predict that the distribution of cold dark matter in spiral galaxies has peaks in velocity space associated with non-thermalized flows of dark matter particles. We searched for the corresponding peaks in the spectrum of microwave photons from axion to photon conversion in the cavity detector of dark matter axions. We found none and place limits on the density of any local flow of axions as a function of the flow velocity dispersion over the axion mass range 1.98 to 2.17 $μ$eV.

Photoinduced time-resolved electrodynamics of superconducting metals and alloys

The photoexcited state in superconducting metals and alloys was studied via pump-probe spectroscopy. A pulsed Ti:sapphire laser was used to create the non-equilibrium state and the far-infrared pulses of a synchrotron storage ring, to which the laser is synchronized, measured the changes in the material optical properties. Both the time- and frequency- dependent photoinduced spectra of Pb, Nb, NbN, Nb{0.5}Ti{0.5}N, and Pb{0.75}Bi{0.25} superconducting thin films were measured in the low-fluence regime. The time dependent data establish the regions where the relaxation rate is dominated either by the phonon escape time (phonon bottleneck effect) or by the intrinsic quasiparticle recombination time. The photoinduced spectra measure directly the reduction of the superconducting gap due to an excess number of quasiparticles created by the short laser pulses. This gap shift allows us to establish the temperature range over which the low fluence approximation is valid.

An Improved RF Cavity Search for Halo Axions

The axion is a hypothetical elementary particle and cold dark matter candidate. In this RF cavity experiment, halo axions entering a resonant cavity immersed in a static magnetic field convert into microwave photons, with the resulting photons detected by a low-noise receiver. The ADMX Collaboration presents new limits on the axion-to-photon coupling and local axion dark matter halo mass density from a RF cavity axion search in the axion mass range 1.9-2.3 microeV, broadening the search range to 1.9-3.3 microeV. In addition, we report first results from an improved analysis technique.

Experimental Constraints on the Axion Dark Matter Halo Density

Most of the mass of the Milky Way galaxy is contributed by its halo, presumably in the form of non-interacting cold dark matter. The axion is a compelling cold dark matter candidate. We report results from a search which probes the local galactic halo axion density using the Sikivie RF cavity technique. Candidates over the frequency range 550$$ $\le$ f $\le$$$ 810 MHz (2.3$$ $μ$eV $\le$$$ m$_{a}$ $\le$ 3.4 $μ$eV) were investigated. The absence of a signal suggests that KSVZ axions contribute no more than 0.45 GeV/cm$^3$ of mass density to the local dark matter halo over this mass range.

Phonon anomaly at the charge ordering transition in 1T-TaS2

The infrared reflectance of the transition metal chalcogenide 1T-TaS2 has been measured at temperatures from 30K to 360K over 30-45,000cm^-1 (4meV-5.5eV). The optical conductivity was obtained by Kramers-Kronig analysis. At 360K only modest traces of the phonon lines are noticeable. The phonon modes are followed by a pseudogap-like increase of the optical conductivity, with direct optical transitions observed at frequencies above 1eV. As the temperature decreases, the low frequency conductivity also decreases, phonon modes become more pronounced and pseudogap develops into a gap at 800cm^-1 (100meV). We observe an anomalous frequency dependence of the 208cm^-1 infrared-active phonon mode. This mode demonstrates softening as the temperature decreases below the 180K metal-to-insulator transition. The same mode demonstrates strong hysteresis of the frequency and linewidth changes, similar in its temperature behavior to the hysteresis in the dc-resistivity. We discuss a possible relation of the observed softening of the mode to the structural changes associated with the metal-to-insulator transition.

Dynamic Resonance of Light in Fabry-Perot Cavities

The dynamics of light in Fabry-Perot cavities with varying length and input laser frequency are analyzed and the exact condition for resonance is derived. This dynamic resonance depends on the light transit time in the cavity and the Doppler effect due to the mirror motions. The response of the cavity to length variations is very different from its response to laser frequency variations. If the frequency of these variations is equal to multiples of the cavity free spectral range, the response to length is maximized while the response to the laser frequency is zero. Implications of these results for the detection of gravitational waves using kilometer-scale Fabry-Perot cavities are discussed.

Ordered low-temperature structure in K4C60 detected by infrared spectroscopy

Infrared spectra of a K4C60 single-phase thin film have been measured between room temperature and 20 K. At low temperatures, the two high-frequency T1u modes appear as triplets, indicating a static D2h crystal-field stabilized Jahn-Teller distortion of the (C60)4- anions. The T1u(4) mode changes into the known doublet above 250 K, a pattern which could have three origins: a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect, static disorder between "staggered" anions, or a phase transition from an orientationally-ordered phase to one where molecular motion is significant.

Sub-nanosecond, time-resolved, broadband infrared spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation

A facility for sub-nanosecond time-resolved (pump-probe) infrared spectroscopy has been developed at the National Synchrotron Light Source of Brookhaven National Laboratory. A mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser produces 2 ps duration, tunable near-IR pump pulses synchronized to probe pulses from a synchrotron storage ring. The facility is unique on account of the broadband infrared from the synchrotron, which allows the entire spectral range from 2 cm-1 (0.25 meV) to 20,000 cm-1 (2.5 eV) to be probed. A temporal resolution of 200 ps, limited by the infrared synchrotron-pulse duration, is achieved. A maximum time delay of 170 ns is available without gating the infrared detector. To illustrate the performance of the facility, a measurement of electron-hole recombination dynamics for an HgCdTe semiconductor film in the far- and mid infrared range is presented.

Infrared and Raman studies of the Verwey transition in magnetite

We present infrared and Raman measurements of magnetite (Fe_3O_4). This material is known to undergo a metal-insulator and a structural transition (Verwey transition) at T_V=120K. At temperatures below T_V, we observe a strong gap-like suppression of the optical conductivity below 1000 cm^-1. The structural aspect of the Verwey transition demonstrates itself by the appearance of additional infrared- and Raman-active phonons. The frequencies of the infrared-active phonons show no significant singularities at the transition whereas their linewidths increase. The frequency and linewidth of the Raman-active phonon at 670 cm^-1 changes abruptly at the transition. For T<T_V, we observe fine structures in the infrared and Raman spectra which may indicate strong anharmonicity of the system below the transition. Our estimate of the effective mass of the carriers above the transition to be about 100 m, where m is the free electron mass. Our measurements favor a polaronic mechanism of conductivity and underline the importance of the electron-phonon interaction in the mechanism of the Verwey transition.

Giant Magneto-Resistance in Nd$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ at Optical Frequencies

The optical properties of Nd$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ thin films have been studied from 5 meV to 25 meV and from 0.25 eV to 3 eV, at temperatures from 15 K to 300 K and magnetic fields up to 8.9 T. A large transfer of spectral weight from high energy to low energy occurs as the temperature is decreased below 180 K, where the dc resistivity peaks, or as the magnetic field is increased. The optical data are found to be consistent with models that include both the double exchange interaction and the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect on the Mn$^{3+}$ e$_g$ levels.

Axion detection in the milli-eV mass range

We propose an experimental scheme to search for galactic halo axions with mass $m_a \sim 10^{-3}$eV, which is above the range accessible with cavity techniques. The detector consists of a large number of parallel superconducting wires embedded in a material transparent to microwave radiation. The wires carry a current configuration which produces a static, inhomogeneous magnetic field $\vec{B}_0(\vec{x})$ within the detector volume. Axions which enter this volume may convert to photons. We discuss the feasibility of the detector and its sensitivity.
