Depletion and fluctuations of a trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in the roton regime

We consider the non-condensate density and density fluctuations of a trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate, focusing on the regime where a roton-like excitation spectrum develops. Our results show that a characteristic peak in the non-condensate density occurs at trap center due to the rotons. In this regime we also find that the anomalous density becomes positive and peaked, giving rise to enhanced density fluctuations. We calculate the non-condensate density in momentum space and show that a small momentum halo is associated with the roton excitations.

Finite-temperature trapped dipolar Bose gas

We develop a finite temperature Hartree theory for the trapped dipolar Bose gas. We use this theory to study thermal effects on the mechanical stability of the system and density oscillating condensate states. We present results for the stability phase diagram as a function of temperature and aspect ratio. In oblate traps above the critical temperature for condensation we find that the Hartree theory predicts significant stability enhancement over the semiclassical result. Below the critical temperature we find that thermal effects are well described by accounting for the thermal depletion of the condensate. Our results also show that density oscillating condensate states occur over a range of interaction strengths that broadens with increasing temperature.

Magnetostriction and exchange effects in trapped dipolar Bose and Fermi gases

We examine the magnetostrictive position and momentum space distortions that occur in harmonically confined dipolar Bose and Fermi gases. Direct interactions give rise to position space magnetostriction and exchange interactions give rise to momentum space magnetostriction. While the position space magnetostriction is similar in Bose and Fermi systems, the momentum space magnetostriction is markedly different: the Bose gas momentum distribution distorts in the opposite sense to that of the Fermi gas. By relating exchange effects to short range correlations between the particles we discuss the energetic origin of this difference. Our main calculations are based on Hartree-Fock theory, but we also provide analytic approximations for the magnetostriction effects at zero and finite temperature. Our predictions should be verifiable in current experiments with ultra-cold polar molecules.

A local exchange theory for trapped dipolar gases

We develop a practical Hartree-Fock theory for trapped Bose and Fermi gases that interact with dipole-dipole interactions. This theory is applicable at zero and finite temperature. Our approach is based on the introduction of local momentum distortion fields that characterize the exchange effects in terms of a local effective potential. We validate our theory against existing theories, finding excellent agreement with full Hartree-Fock calculations.

Roton spectroscopy in a harmonically trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

We study a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with dipole-dipole interactions in a regime where a roton spectrum emerges. We show that the roton spectrum is clearly revealed in the static and dynamic structure factors which can be measured using Bragg spectroscopy. We develop and validate a theory based on the local density approximation for the dynamic structure factor.

Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method for cold atom dynamics: classical Boltzmann equation in the quantum collision regime

In this paper we develop a direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method for simulating highly nonequilibrium dynamics of nearly degenerate ultra-cold gases. We show that our method can simulate the high-energy collision of two thermal clouds in the regime observed in experiments [Thomas, et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{93}, 173201 (2004)], which requires the inclusion of beyond s-wave scattering. We also consider the long-time dynamics of this system, demonstrating that this would be a practical experimental scenario for testing the Boltzmann equation and studying rethermalization.

Finite temperature stability of a trapped dipolar Bose gas

We calculate the stability diagram for a trapped normal Bose gas with dipole-dipole interactions. Our study characterizes the roles of trap geometry, temperature, and short-ranged interactions on the stability. We predict a robust double instability feature in oblate trapping geometries arising from the interplay of thermal gas saturation and the anisotropy of the interaction. Our results are relevant to current experiments with polar molecules and will be useful in developing strategies to obtain a polar molecule Bose-Einstein condensate.

Impact of spin-orbit coupling on the Holstein polaron

We utilize an exact variational numerical procedure to calculate the ground state properties of a polaron in the presence of a Rashba-like spin orbit interaction. Our results corroborate with previous work performed with the Momentum Average approximation and with weak coupling perturbation theory. We find that spin orbit coupling increases the effective mass in the regime with weak electron phonon coupling, and decreases the effective mass in the intermediate and strong electron phonon coupling regime. Analytical strong coupling perturbation theory results confirm our numerical results in the small polaron regime. A large amount of spin orbit coupling can lead to a significant lowering of the polaron effective mass.

Thermodynamics and coherence of a trapped dipolar Fermi gas

We develop a meanfield treatment of a polarized trapped Fermi gas with dipole-dipole interactions. Our approach is based on self-consistent semiclassical Hartree-Fock theory that accounts for direct and exchange interactions. We discuss our procedure for numerically implementing the calculation. We study the thermodynamic and the first and second order correlation properties of the system. We find that the system entropy depends on the trap geometry, allowing the system to be cooled as the trap aspect ratio is increased, and that exchange interactions cause the correlation functions to be anisotropic in the low temperature regime. We also find that many uniform gas thermodynamic predictions, for which direct interaction effects vanish, are qualitatively unreliable for trapped systems, most notably for oblate traps. We develop a simplified Hartree formalism that is applicable to anisotropic harmonic traps.

Geometric scale invariance as a route to macroscopic degeneracy: loading a toroidal trap with a Bose or Fermi gas

An easily scalable toroidal geometry presents an opportunity for creating large scale persistent currents in Bose-Einstein condensates, for studies of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, and for investigations of toroidally trapped degenerate Fermi gases. We consider in detail the process of isentropic loading of a Bose or Fermi gas from a harmonic trap into the scale invariant toroidal regime that exhibits a high degree of system invariance when increasing the radius of the toroid. The heating involved in loading a Bose gas is evaluated analytically and numerically, both above and below the critical temperature. Our numerical calculations treat interactions within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov-Popov theory. Minimal change in degeneracy is observed over a wide range of initial temperatures, and a regime of cooling is identified. The scale invariant property is further investigated analytically by studying the density of states of the system, revealing the robust nature of scale invariance in this trap, for both bosons and fermions. We give analytical results for a Thomas-Fermi treatment. We calculate the heating due to loading a spin-polarized Fermi gas and compare with analytical results for high and low temperature regimes. The Fermi gas is subjected to irreducible heating during loading, caused by the loss of one degree of freedom for thermalization.

Ground state properties of the Holstein model near the adiabatic limit

We adapt a variational procedure to calculate ground state properties of the Holstein model in the adiabatic limit. At strong coupling, this adaption leads to rapid convergence of results. The intermediate coupling regime is further handled with an adaptive algorithm. We also use semi-classically derived results for the adiabatic end-point, along with weak coupling perturbation theory. These establish weak and strong coupling (or large and small polaron, respectively) regimes in two dimensions or higher. As is well known, these are connected smoothly, but the cross-over becomes increasingly abrupt as the phonon frequency decreases.

Critical temperature of a Bose gas in an optical lattice

We present theory for the critical temperature of a Bose gas in a combined harmonic lattice potential based on a mean-field description of the system. We develop practical expressions for the ideal-gas critical temperature, and corrections due to interactions, the finite-size effect, and the occupation of excited bands. We compare our expressions to numerical calculations and find excellent agreement over a wide parameter regime.

Finite temperature theory of superfluid bosons in optical lattices

A practical finite temperature theory is developed for the superfluid regime of a weakly interacting Bose gas in an optical lattice with additional harmonic confinement. We derive an extended Bose-Hubbard model that is valid for shallow lattices and when excited bands are occupied. Using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov-Popov mean-field approach, and applying local density and coarse-grained envelope approximations, we arrive at a theory that can be numerically implemented accurately and efficiently. We present results for a three-dimensional system, characterizing the importance of the features of the extended Bose-Hubbard model and compare against other theoretical results and show an improved agreement with experimental data.

Analysis of the Holzmann-Chevallier-Krauth theory for the trapped quasi-two-dimensional Bose gas

We provide an in depth analysis of the theory proposed by Holzmann, Chevallier and Krauth (HCK) [Europhys. Lett., {\bf 82}, 30001 (2008)] for predicting the temperature at which the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition to a superfluid state occurs in the harmonically trapped quasi-two-dimensional (2D) Bose gas. Their theory is based on a meanfield model of the system density and we show that the HCK predictions change appreciably when an improved meanfield theory and identification of the transition point is used. In this analysis we develop a consistent theory that provides a lower bound for the BKT transition temperature in the trapped quasi-2D Bose gas.
