On the statistical detection of propagating waves in polar coronal hole

Waves are important for the heating of the solar corona and the acceleration of the solar wind. We have examined a long spectral time series of a southern coronal hole observed on the 25th February 1997, with the SUMER spectrometer on-board SoHO. The observations were obtained in a transition region N IV 765 A line and in a low coronal Ne VIII 770 A line. Our observations indicate the presence of compressional waves with periods of 18 min. We also find significant power in shorter periods. Using Fourier techniques, we measured the phase delays between intensity as well as velocity oscillations in the two chosen lines over a frequency domain. From this we are able to measure the travel time of the propagating oscillations and, hence, the propagation speeds of the waves producing the oscillations. As the measured propagation speeds are subsonic, we conclude that the detected waves are slow magneto-acoustic in nature.

On the statistical detection of propagating waves in polar coronal holes

Waves are important for the heating of the solar corona and the acceleration of the solar wind. We have examined a long spectral time series of a northern coronal hole observed on the 20th October 1996, with the SUMER spectrometer onboard SoHO. The observations were obtained in a transition region N IV 765 A line and in a low coronal Ne VIII 770 A line. Our observations indicate the presence of compressional waves with periods of ~25 min. Using Fourier techniques, we measured the phase delays between intensity as well as velocity oscillations in the two chosen lines. From this we are able to measure the travel time of the propagating oscillations and, hence, the propagation speeds of the waves producing the oscillations. We found that there is a difference in the nature of the propagation in bright ('network') and dark ('internetwork') regions with the latter sometimes showing evidence for downwardly propagating waves that is not seen in the former. As, in all cases, the measured propagation speeds are subsonic, we concluded that the detected waves are slow magnetoacoustic in nature.

Qubit rotation and Berry Phase

A quantized fermion can be represented by a scalar particle encircling a magnetic flux line. It has the spinor structure which can be constructed from quantum gates and qubits. We have studied here the role of Berry phase in removing dynamical phase during one qubit rotation of a quantized fermion. The entanglement of two qubit inserting spin-echo to one of them results the change of Berry phase that can be considered as a measure of entanglement. Some effort is given to study the effect of noise on the Berry phase of spinor and their entangled states.

Anisotropy of electron momentum distribution in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_(8+d)$ superconductor studied by positron annihilation technique

The temperature dependent (30 K to 300 K) Doppler broadening of the positron annihilated g-radiation (DBPAR) measurement has been carried out on single crystalline Bi-2212 high Tc superconducting sample along two different crystallographic orientations. It has been observed that throughout the temperature range the electron momentum distribution has a relatively large value along the crystallographic c-axis than a-b plane. The temperature dependent DBPARL analysis shows a step like increase of S-parameter at the temperature region 92 K to 116 K.
