Terahertz Electrodynamics of Mixed-Valent YbAl$_3$ and LuAl$_3$ Thin Films

We present THz measurements of thin films of mixed-valent YbAl$_3$ and its structural analogue LuAl$_3$. Combined with traditional Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, the extended Drude formalism is utilized to study the low-frequency transport of these materials. We find that LuAl$_3$ demonstrates conventional Drude transport whereas at low temperatures YbAl$_3$ demonstrates a sharply renormalized Drude peak and a mid-infrared (MIR) peak in the conductivity, indicative of the formation of a heavy Fermi liquid. In YbAl$_3$ the extended Drude framework shows a consistency of the scattering rate with Fermi-liquid behavior below $T < 40$ K and a moderate mass enhancement. While a $ω^2$ Fermi liquid-like frequency dependence is not clearly exhibited, the temperature dependence of the Drude scattering rate and effective mass is consistent with the formation of a low-temperature moderately heavy Fermi liquid, albeit one with a smaller mass than observed in single crystals. The extended Drude analysis also supports a slow crossover between the Fermi liquid state and the normal state in YbAl$_3$.

A Large Effective Phonon Magnetic Moment in a Dirac Semimetal

We investigated the magnetoterahertz response of the Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$As$_2$ and observed a particularly low frequency optical phonon, as well as a very prominent and field sensitive cyclotron resonance. As the cyclotron frequency is tuned with field to pass through the phonon, the phonon become circularly polarized as shown by a notable splitting in their response to right- and left-hand polarized light. This splitting can be expressed as an effective phonon magnetic moment that is approximately 2.7 times the Bohr magneton, which is almost four orders of magnitude larger than ab initio calculations predict for phonon magnetic moments in nonmagnetic insulators. This exceedingly large value is due to the coupling of the phonons to the cyclotron motion and is controlled directly by the electron-phonon coupling constant. This field tunable circular-polarization selective coupling provides new functionality for nonlinear optics to create light-induced topological phases in Dirac semimetals.

Terahertz conductivity of the magnetic Weyl semimetal Mn$_{3}$Sn films

Mn$_{3}$Sn is a non-collinear antiferromagnet which displays a large anomalous Hall effect at room temperature. It is believed that the principal contribution to its anomalous Hall conductivity comes from Berry curvature. Moreover, dc transport and photoemission experiments have confirmed that Mn$_{3}$Sn may be an example of a time-reversal symmetry breaking Weyl semimetal. Due to a small, but finite moment in the room temperature inverse triangular spin structure, which allows control of the Hall current with external field, this material has garnered much interest for next generation memory devices and THz spintronics applications. In this work, we report a THz range study of oriented Mn$_{3}$Sn thin films as a function of temperature. At low frequencies we found the optical conductivity can be well described by a single Drude oscillator. The plasma frequency is strongly suppressed in a temperature dependent fashion as one enters the 260 K helical phase. This may be associated with partial gapping of the Fermi surfaces that comes from breaking translational symmetry along the c-axis. The scattering rate shows quadratic temperature dependence below 200 K, highlighting the possible important role of interactions in this compound.
