Relativistic Attosecond Electron Bunches from Laser-Illuminated Droplets

The generation of relativistic attosecond electron bunches is observed in three-dimensional, relativistic particle-in-cell simulations of the interaction of intense laser light with droplets. The electron bunches are emitted under certain angles which depend on the ratios of droplet radius to wavelength and plasma frequency to laser frequency. The mechanism behind the multi-MeV attosecond electron bunch generation is investigated using Mie theory. It is shown that the angular distribution and the high electron energies are due to a parameter-sensitive, time-dependent local field enhancement at the droplet surface.

Strong Field Ionization Rate for Arbitrary Laser Frequencies

A simple, analytical, nonrelativistic ionization rate formula for atoms and positive ions in intense ultraviolet and x-ray electromagnetic fields is derived. The rate is valid at arbitrary values of the Keldysh parameter and confirmed by results from ab initio numerical solutions of the single active electron, time-dependent Schroedinger equation. The proposed rate is particularly relevant for experiments employing the new free electron laser (FEL) sources under construction worldwide.

Recollision-Induced Plasmon Excitation in Strong Laser Fields

Recolliding electrons are responsible for many of the interesting phenomena observed in the interaction of strong laser fields with atoms and molecules. We show that in multielectron targets such as C60 a new important recollision pathway opens up: the returning electron may excite collective modes even if the laser frequency is far off-resonant. We formulate a simple analytical theory which predicts that the recollision-induced excitation of collective modes should dominate over the "usual" harmonic generation yield at 800nm wavelength. In this case the tomographic imaging of complex multielectron systems may be obscured. We employ a time-dependent density functional model of C60 and show that with increasing laser wavelength the dynamics becomes more and more single active electron-like, suggesting that long wavelengths are to be preferred for imaging purposes.

Collisionless Absorption of Intense Laser Beams by Anharmonic Resonance

Two decades after the invention of chirped pulse amplification the physical mechanism of collisionless absorption of intense laser radiation in overdense matter is still not sufficiently well understood. We show that anharmonic resonance in the self-generated plasma potential of the single plasma layers (cold plasma model) or of the individual electrons (warm plasma), respectively, constitutes the leading physical mechanism of collisionless absorption in an overdense plasma. Analogously to collisions, resonance provides for the finite phase shift of the free electron current relative to the driving laser field which is compulsory for energy transfer from the laser beam to any medium. An efficient new scenario of wave breaking is also indicated.

Harmonic emission from cluster nanoplasmas subject to intense short laser pulses

Harmonic emission from cluster nanoplasmas subject to short intense infrared laser pulses is studied. In a previous publication [M. Kundu et al., Phys. Rev. A 76, 033201 (2007)] we reported particle-in-cell simulation results showing resonant enhancements of low-order harmonics when the Mie plasma frequency of the ionizing and expanding cluster resonates with the respective harmonic frequency. Simultaneously we found that high-order harmonics were barely present in the spectrum, even at high intensities. The current paper is focused on the analytical modeling of the process. We show that dynamical stochasticity owing to nonlinear resonance inhibits the emission of high order harmonics.

Strong Field Approximation for Systems with Coulomb Interaction

A theory describing above-threshold ionization of atoms and ions in a strong electromagnetic field is presented. It is based on the widely known strong field approximation and incorporates the Coulomb interaction between the photoelectron and the nucleus using the method of complex classical trajectories. A central result of the theory is the Coulomb-corrected ionization amplitude whose evaluation requires little extra numerical effort. By comparing our predictions with the results of ab initio numerical solutions for two examples we show that the new theory provides a significant improvement of the Coulomb-free strong field approximation. For the case of above-threshold ionization in elliptically polarized fields a comparison with available experimental data is also presented.

Optimizing the ionization and energy absorption of laser-irradiated clusters

It is known that rare-gas or metal clusters absorb incident laser energy very efficiently. However, due to the intricate dependencies on all the laser and cluster parameters it is difficult to predict under which circumstances ionization and energy absorption is optimal. With the help of three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of xenon clusters (up to 17256 atoms) we find that for a given laser pulse energy and cluster an optimum wavelength exists which corresponds to the approximate wavelength of the transient, linear Mie-resonance of the ionizing cluster at an early stage of negligible expansion. In a single ultrashort laser pulse, the linear resonance at this optimum wavelength yields much higher absorption efficiency than in the conventional, dual-pulse pump-probe set-up of linear resonance during cluster expansion.

Nonperturbative resonant strong field ionization of atomic hydrogen

We investigate resonant strong field ionization of atomic hydrogen with respect to the 1s-2p-transition. By "strong" we understand that Rabi-periods are executed on a femtosecond time scale. Ionization and AC Stark shifts modify the bound state dynamics severely, leading to nonperturbative signatures in the photoelectron spectra. We introduce an analytical model, capable of predicting qualitative features in the photoelectron spectra such as the positions of the Autler-Townes peaks for modest field strengths. Ab initio solutions of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation show a pronounced shift and broadening of the left Autler-Townes peak as the field strength is increased. The right peak remains rather narrow and shifts less. This result is analyzed and explained with the help of exact AC Stark shifts and ionization rates obtained from Floquet theory. Finally, it is demonstrated that in the case of finite pulses as short as 20fs the Autler-Townes duplet can still be resolved. The fourth generation light sources under construction worldwide will provide bright, coherent radiation with photon energies ranging from a tenth of a meV up to tens of keV, hence covering the regime studied in the paper so that measurements of nonperturbative, relative AC Stark shifts should become feasible with these new light sources.

Harmonic Generation from Laser-Irradiated Clusters

The harmonic emission from cluster nanoplasmas subject to short, intense infrared laser pulses is analyzed by means of particle-in-cell simulations. A pronounced resonant enhancement of the low-order harmonic yields is found when the Mie plasma frequency of the ionizing and expanding cluster resonates with the respective harmonic frequency. We show that a strong, nonlinear resonant coupling of the cluster electrons with the laser field inhibits coherent electron motion, suppressing the emitted radiation and restricting the spectrum to only low-order harmonics. A pump-probe scheme is suggested to monitor the ionization dynamics of the expanding clusters.

Momentum distributions in time-dependent density functional theory: Product phase approximation for non-sequential double ionization in strong laser fields

We investigate the possibility to deduce momentum space properties from time-dependent density functional calculations. Electron and ion momentum distributions after double ionization of a model Helium atom in a strong few-cycle laser pulse are studied. We show that, in this case, the choice of suitable functionals for the observables is considerably more important than the choice of the correlation potential in the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equations. By comparison with the solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation, the insufficiency of functionals neglecting electron correlation is demonstrated. We construct a functional of the Kohn-Sham orbitals, which in principle yields the exact momentum distributions of the electrons and the ion. The product-phase approximation is introduced, which reduces the problem of approximating this functional significantly.

Harmonium in intense laser fields: excitation, absorption, and transparency

It is known that the dynamics of two (Coulomb-interacting) nonrelativistic electrons confined by a parabolic potential and driven by a classical, intense laser field (in dipole approximation) is exactly soluble. We calculate the time-dependent population of the harmonic oscillator states and the energy absorbed from the laser. It turns out that the key entity on which all observables sensitively depends is the modulus square of the Fourier-transformed vector potential of the laser field, evaluated at the harmonic oscillator frequency. The system is transparent to laser field configurations for which this entity vanishes. We discuss the Poisson statistics behavior of the transition probabilities and analyze the conditions for the complete survival and full depletion of the initial state.

Nonsequential Double Recombination in Intense Laser Fields

A second plateau in the harmonic spectra of laser-driven two-electron atoms is observed both in the numerical solution of a low-dimensional model helium atom and using an extended strong field approximation. It is shown that the harmonics well beyond the usual cut-off are due to the simultaneous recombination of the two electrons, which were emitted during different, previous half-cycles. The new cut-off is explained in terms of classical trajectories. Classical predictions and the time-frequency analysis of the ab initio quantum results are in excellent agreement. The mechanism corresponds to the inverse single photon double ionization process in the presence of a (low frequency) laser field.

Adiabatic Approximation of the Correlation Function in the Density-Functional Treatment of Ionization Processes

The ionization of a one-dimensional model Helium atom in short laser pulses using time-dependent density functional theory is investigated. We calculate ionization probabilities as a function of laser intensity by approximating the correlation function of the system adiabatically with an explicit dependence on the fractional number of bound electrons. For the correlation potential we take the derivative discontinuity at integer numbers of bound electrons explicitly into account. This approach reproduces ionization probabilities from the solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation, in particular the so-called "knee" due to nonsequential ionization.

Collisionless energy absorption in the short-pulse intense laser-cluster interaction

In a previous Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 123401 (2006)] we have shown by means of three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and a simple rigid-sphere model that nonlinear resonance absorption is the dominant collisionless absorption mechanism in the intense, short-pulse laser cluster interaction. In this paper we present a more detailed account of the matter. In particular we show that the absorption efficiency is almost independent of the laser polarization. In the rigid-sphere model, the absorbed energy increases by many orders of magnitude at a certain threshold laser intensity. The particle-in-cell results display maximum fractional absorption around the same intensity. We calculate the threshold intensity and show that it is underestimated by the common over-barrier ionization estimate.

Nonlinear resonance absorption in laser-cluster interaction

Rare gas or metal clusters are known to absorb laser energy very efficiently. Upon cluster expansion the Mie plasma frequency may become equal to the laser frequency. This linear resonance has been well studied both experimentally and theoretically employing pump probe schemes. In this work we focus on the few-cycle regime or the early stage of the cluster dynamics where linear resonance is not met but nevertheless efficient absorption of laser energy persists. By retrieving time-dependent oscillator frequencies from particle-in-cell simulation results, we show that nonlinear resonance is the dominant mechanism behind outer ionization and energy absorption in near infrared laser-driven clusters.

QPROP: A Schroedinger-solver for intense laser-atom interaction

The Qprop package is presented. Qprop has been developed to study laser-atom interaction in the nonperturbative regime where nonlinear phenomena such as above-threshold ionization, high order harmonic generation, and dynamic stabilization are known to occur. In the nonrelativistic regime and within the single active electron approximation, these phenomena can be studied with Qprop in the most rigorous way by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in three spatial dimensions. Because Qprop is optimized for the study of quantum systems that are spherically symmetric in their initial, unperturbed configuration, all wavefunctions are expanded in spherical harmonics. Time-propagation of the wavefunctions is performed using a split-operator approach. Photoelectron spectra are calculated employing a window-operator technique. Besides the solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in single active electron approximation, Qprop allows to study many-electron systems via the solution of the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equations.

Strong-field approximation for intense-laser atom processes: the choice of gauge

The strong-field approximation can be and has been applied in both length gauge and velocity gauge with quantitatively conflicting answers. For ionization of negative ions with a ground state of odd parity, the predictions of the two gauges differ qualitatively: in the envelope of the angular-resolved energy spectrum, dips in one gauge correspond to humps in the other. We show that the length-gauge SFA matches the exact numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation.

Attosecond double-slit experiment

A new scheme for a double-slit experiment in the time domain is presented. Phase-stabilized few-cycle laser pulses open one to two windows (``slits'') of attosecond duration for photoionization. Fringes in the angle-resolved energy spectrum of varying visibility depending on the degree of which-way information are observed. A situation in which one and the same electron encounters a single and a double slit at the same time is discussed. The investigation of the fringes makes possible interferometry on the attosecond time scale. The number of visible fringes, for example, indicates that the slits are extended over about 500as.
