Exact Topological Twistons in Crystalline Polyethylene

We investigate the presence of topological twistons in crystalline polyethylene. We describe crystalline polyethylene with a model that couples the torsional and longitudinal degrees of freedom of the polymeric chain by means of a system of two real scalar fields. This model supports topological twistons, which are described by exact and stable topological solutions that appear when the interaction between torsional and longitudinal fields is polynomial, containing up to the sixth power in the fields. We calculate the energy of the topological twiston, and the result is in very good agreement with the value obtained via molecular simulation.

Black hole formation in bidimensional dilaton gravity coupled to scalar matter systems

This work deals with the formation of black hole in bidimensional dilaton gravity coupled to scalar matter fields. We investigate two scalar matter systems, one described by a sixth power potential and the other defined with two scalar fields containing up to the fourth power in the fields. The topological solutions that appear in these cases allow the formation of black holes in the corresponding dilaton gravity models.

Bags, junctions, and networks of BPS and non-BPS defects

We investigate several models of coupled scalar fields that present discrete Z_2, Z_2 x Z_2, Z_3 and other symmetries. These models support topological domain wall solutions of the BPS and non-BPS type. The BPS solutions are stable, but the stability of the non-BPS solutions may depend on the parameters that specify the models. The BPS and non-BPS states give rise to bags, and also to three-junctions that may allow the presence of networks of topological defects. In particular, we show that the non-BPS defects of a specific model that engenders the Z_3 symmetry give rise to a stable regular hexagonal network of domain walls.

Chaotic behavior in a Z_2 x Z_2 field theory

We investigate the presence of chaos in a system of two real scalar fields with discrete Z_2 x Z_2 symmetry. The potential that identify the system is defined with a real parameter r and presents distinct features for r>0 and for r<0. For static field configurations, the system supports two topological sectors for r>0, and only one for r<0. Under the assumption of spatially homogeneous fields, the system exhibts chaotic behavior almost everywhere in parameter space. In particular a more complex dynamics appears for r>0; in this case chaos can decrease for increasing energy, a fact that is absent for r<0.

Tiling the plane without supersymmetry

We present a way of tiling the plane with a regular hexagonal network of defects. The network is stable and follows in consequence of the three-junctions that appear in a model of two real scalar fields that presents $Z_3$ symmetry. The $Z_3$ symmetry is effective in both the vacuum and defect sectors, and no supersymmetry is required to build the network.

Topological solitons in a vacuumless system

We investigate a model for a real scalar field in bidimensional space-time, described in terms of a positive semi-definite potential that presents no vacuum state. The system presents topological solutions of the BPS type, with energy density that follows a Lorentzian law. These BPS solutions differ from the standard $\tanh$-type kink, but they also support bosonic and fermionic zero modes.

Domain defects in systems of two real scalar fields

In this work we investigate the role of the symmetry of the Lagrangian on the existence of defects in systems of coupled scalar fields. We focus attention mainly on solutions where defects may nest defects. When space is non-compact we find topological BPS and non-BPS solutions that present internal structure. When space is compact the solutions are nontopological sphalerons, which may be nested inside the topological defects. We address the question of classical stability of these topological and nontopological solutions and investigate how the thermal corrections may modify the classical scenario.

Galileo invariant system and the motion of relativistic d-branes

We follow recent work and study the relativistic d-brane system in (d+1,1) dimensions and its connection with a Galileo invariant system in (d,1) dimensions. In particular, we solve d-brane systems in (2,1), (3,1) and (4,1) dimensions and show that their solutions solve the corresponding Galileo invariant systems in (1,1), (2,1), and (3,1) dimensions. The results are extended to higher dimensions.

Topological Twistons in Crystalline Polyethylene

We introduce an alternate model to describe twistons in crystalline polyethylene. The model couples torsional and longitudinal degrees of freedom and appears as an extension of a model that describes only the torsional motion. We find exact solutions that describe stable topological twistons, in good agreement with the torsional and longitudinal interactions in polyethylene.

Chiral Solitons in Generalized Korteweg-de Vries Equations

Generalizations of the Korteweg-de Vries equation are considered, and some explicit solutions are presented. There are situations where solutions engender the interesting property of being chiral, that is, of having velocity determined in terms of the parameters that define the generalized equation, with a definite sign.

Nonlinear Realization of a Dynamical Poincare Symmetry by a Field-dependent Diffeomorphism

We consider a description of membranes by (2,1)-dimensional field theory, or alternatively a description of irrotational, isentropic fluid motion by a field theory in any dimension. We show that these Galileo-invariant systems, as well as others related to them, admit a peculiar diffeomorphism symmetry, where the transformation rule for coordinates involves the fields. The symmetry algebra coincides with that of the Poincare group in one higher dimension. Therefore, these models provide a nonlinear representation for a dynamical Poincare group.

Exact Kink Solitons in the Presence of Diffusion, Dispersion, and Polynomial Nonlinearity

We describe exact kink soliton solutions to nonlinear partial differential equations in the generic form u_{t} + P(u) u_{x} + νu_{xx} + δu_{xxx} = A(u), with polynomial functions P(u) and A(u) of u=u(x,t), whose generality allows the identification with a number of relevant equations in physics. We emphasize the study of chirality of the solutions, and its relation with diffusion, dispersion, and nonlinear effects, as well as its dependence on the parity of the polynomials $P(u)$ and $A(u)$ with respect to the discrete symmetry $u\to-u$. We analyze two types of kink soliton solutions, which are also solutions to 1+1 dimensional phi^{4} and phi^{6} field theories.

Travelling Wave Solutions in Nonlinear Diffusive and Dispersive Media

We investigate the presence of soliton solutions in some classes of nonlinear partial differential equations, namely generalized Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers, Korteveg-de Vries-Huxley, and Korteveg-de Vries-Burgers-Huxley equations, which combine effects of diffusion, dispersion, and nonlinearity. We emphasize the chiral behavior of the travelling solutions, whose velocities are determined by the parameters that define the equation. For some appropriate choices, we show that these equations can be mapped onto equations of motion of relativistic 1+1 dimensional phi^{4} and phi^{6} field theories of real scalar fields. We also study systems of two coupled nonlinear equations of the types mentioned.

Chiral Solutions to Generalized Burgers and Burgers-Huxley Equations

We investigate generalizations of the Burgers and Burgers-Huxley equations. The investigations we offer focus attention mainly on presenting explict analytical solutions by means of relating these generalized equations to relativistic 1+1 dimensional systems of scalar fields where topological solutions are known to play a role. Emphasis is given on chiral solutions, that is, on the possibility of finding solutions that travel with velocities determined in terms of the parameters that identify the generalized equation, with a definite sign.

Soliton Stability in Systems of Two Real Scalar Fields

In this paper we consider a class of systems of two coupled real scalar fields in bidimensional spacetime, with the main motivation of studying classical or linear stability of soliton solutions. Firstly, we present the class of systems and comment on the topological profile of soliton solutions one can find from the first-order equations that solve the equations of motion. After doing that, we follow the standard approach to classical stability to introduce the main steps one needs to obtain the spectra of Schrödinger operators that appear in this class of systems. We consider a specific system, from which we illustrate the general calculations and present some analytical results. We also consider another system, more general, and we present another investigation, that introduces new results and offers a comparison with the former investigations.

Alternate route to soliton solutions in hydrogen-bonded chains

In this paper we offer an alternate route for investigating soliton solutions in hydrogen-bonded chains. This is done by examining a class of systems of two coupled real scalar fields. We show that this route allows investigating several models for hydrogen-bonded chains in a unified manner. We also show how to investigate interesting issues, in particular the one concerning classical or linear stability of solitonic solutions.

Gauge Invariant Effective Potential for Abelian Maxwell-Chern-Simons Systems

We investigate the effective potential for Abelian Maxwell--Chern--Simons systems. The calculations follow an alternate approach, recently proposed as a gauge invariant formulation of the effective potential, constructed in terms of a gauge invariant order parameter. We compare the results with another investigation, obtained within a standard route of calculating the effective potential.

Domain Ribbons Inside Domain Walls at Finite Temperature

In this paper we deal with defects inside defects in systems of two scalar fields in 3+1 dimensions. The systems we consider are defined by potentials containing two real scalar fields, and so we are going to investigate domain ribbons inside domain walls. After introducing some general comments on the possibility of finding defects that support internal structure in two specific systems, we introduce thermal effects to show how the picture for domain walls hosting domain ribbons appears at high temperature.
