Inverse turbulent cascades and conformally invariant curves

We offer a new example of conformal invariance far from equilibrium -- the inverse cascade of Surface Quasi-Geostrophic (SQG) turbulence. We show that temperature isolines are statistically equivalent to curves that can be mapped into a one-dimensional Brownian walk (called Schramm-Loewner Evolution or SLE$_κ$). The diffusivity is close to $κ=4$, that is iso-temperature curves belong to the same universality class as domain walls in the O(2) spin model. Several statistics of temperature clusters and isolines are measured and shown to be consistent with the theoretical expectations for such a spin system at criticality. We also show that the direct cascade in two-dimensional Navier-Stokes turbulence is not conformal invariant. The emerging picture is that conformal invariance may be expected for inverse turbulent cascades of strongly interacting systems.

Conformal invariance in two-dimensional turbulence

Simplicity of fundamental physical laws manifests itself in fundamental symmetries. While systems with an infinity of strongly interacting degrees of freedom (in particle physics and critical phenomena) are hard to describe, they often demonstrate symmetries, in particular scale invariance. In two dimensions (2d) locality often promotes scale invariance to a wider class of conformal transformations which allow for nonuniform re-scaling. Conformal invariance allows a thorough classification of universality classes of critical phenomena in 2d. Is there conformal invariance in 2d turbulence, a paradigmatic example of strongly-interacting non-equilibrium system? Here, using numerical experiment, we show that some features of 2d inverse turbulent cascade display conformal invariance. We observe that the statistics of vorticity clusters is remarkably close to that of critical percolation, one of the simplest universality classes of critical phenomena. These results represent a new step in the unification of 2d physics within the framework of conformal symmetry.

Dipolar SLEs

We present basic properties of Dipolar SLEs, a new version of stochastic Loewner evolutions (SLE) in which the critical interfaces end randomly on an interval of the boundary of a planar domain. We present a general argument explaining why correlation functions of models of statistical mechanics are expected to be martingales and we give a relation between dipolar SLEs and CFTs. We compute SLE excursion and/or visiting probabilities, including the probability for a point to be on the left/right of the SLE trace or that to be inside the SLE hull. These functions, which turn out to be harmonic, have a simple CFT interpretation. We also present numerical simulations of the ferromagnetic Ising interface that confirm both the probabilistic approach and the CFT mapping.

SLE_k growth processes and conformal field theories

SLE_k stochastic processes describe growth of random curves which, in some cases, may be identified with boundaries of two dimensional critical percolating clusters. By generalizing SLE_k growths to formal Markov processes on the central extension of the 2d conformal group, we establish a connection between conformal field theories with central charges c_k=(3k-8)(6/k-1)/2 and zero modes -- observables which are conserved in mean -- of the SLE_k stochastic processes.

Maximal entropy random networks with given degree distribution

Using a maximum entropy principle to assign a statistical weight to any graph, we introduce a model of random graphs with arbitrary degree distribution in the framework of standard statistical mechanics. We compute the free energy and the distribution of connected components. We determine the size of the percolation cluster above the percolation threshold. The conditional degree distribution on the percolation cluster is also given. We briefly present the analogous discussion for oriented graphs, giving for example the percolation criterion.

Four-wave interaction in gas and vacuum. Definition of a third order nonlinear effective susceptibility in vacuum

Semiclassical methods are used to study the nonlinear interaction of light in vacuum in the context of four wave mixing. This study is motivated by a desire to investigate the possibility of using recently developed powerful ultrashort (femtosecond) laser pulses to demonstrate the existence of nonlinear effects in vacuum, predicted by quantum electrodynamics (QED). An approach, similar to classical nonlinear optics in a medium, is developed in this article. A third order nonlinear effective susceptibility of vacuum is then introduced .

Large N spin quantum Hall effect

We introduce a large N version of the spin quantum Hall transition problem. It is formulated as a problem of Dirac fermions coupled to disorder, whose Hamiltonian belong to the symmetry class C. The fermions carry spin degrees of freedom valued in the algebra sp(2N), the spin quantum Hall effect corresponding to N=1. Arguments based on renormalization group transformations as well as on a sigma model formulation, valid in the large N limit, indicate the existence of a crossover as N varies. Contrary to the N=1 case, the large N models are shown to lead to localized states at zero energy. We also present a sigma model analysis for the system of Dirac fermions coupled to only sp(2N) random gauge potentials, which reproduces known exact results.

Nonperturbative renormalization in a scalar model within Light-Front Dynamics

Within the covariant formulation of Light-Front Dynamics, in a scalar model with the interaction Hamiltonian $H=-gψ^{2}(x)ϕ(x)$, we calculate nonperturbatively the renormalized state vector of a scalar "nucleon" in a truncated Fock space containing the $N$, $Nπ$ and $Nππ$ sectors. The model gives a simple example of non-perturbative renormalization which is carried out numerically. Though the mass renormalization $δm^2$ diverges logarithmically with the cutoff $L$, the Fock components of the "physical" nucleon are stable when $L\to\infty$.

An insulating grid spacer for large-area MICROMEGAS chambers

We present an original design for large area gaseous detectors based on the MICROMEGAS technology. This technology incorporates an insulating grid, sandwiched between the micro-mesh and the anode-pad plane, which provides an uniform 200 $μ$m amplification gap. The uniformity of the amplification gap thickness has been verified under several experimental conditions. The gain performances of the detector are presented and compared to the values obtained with detectors using cylindrical micro spacers. The new design presents several technical and financial advantages.

Even-visiting random walks: exact and asymptotic results in one dimension

We reconsider the problem of even-visiting random walks in one dimension. This problem is mapped onto a non-Hermitian Anderson model with binary disorder. We develop very efficient numerical tools to enumerate and characterize even-visiting walks. The number of closed walks is obtained as an exact integer up to 1828 steps, i.e., some $10^{535}$ walks. On the analytical side, the concepts and techniques of one-dimensional disordered systems allow to obtain explicit asymptotic estimates for the number of closed walks of $4k$ steps up to an absolute prefactor of order unity, which is determined numerically. All the cumulants of the maximum height reached by such walks are shown to grow as $k^{1/3}$, with exactly known prefactors. These results illustrate the tight relationship between even-visiting walks, trapping models, and the Lifshitz tails of disordered electron or phonon spectra.

Quasi-Spin-Charge Separation and the Spin Quantum Hall Effect

We use quantum field theory methods to study the network model for the spin quantum hall transition. When the couplings are fine tuned in a certain way, the spin and charge degrees of freedom, corresponding to the supercurrent algebras su(2) and osp(2|2) respectively, decouple in the renormalization group flow. The infrared fixed point of this simpler theory is the coset osp(4|4)/su(2) which is closely related to the current algebra osp(2|2) but not identical. Some critical exponents are computed and shown to agree with the recent predictions based on percolation.

Poisson algebra of 2d dimensionally reduced gravity

Using a Lax pair based on twisted affine $sl(2,R)$ Kac-Moody and Virasoro algebras, we deduce a r-matrix formulation of two dimensional reduced vacuum Einstein's equations. Whereas the fundamental Poisson brackets are non-ultralocal, they lead to pure c-number modified Yang-Baxter equations. We also describe how to obtain classical observables by imposing reasonable boundaries conditions.

Twisted Self-Duality of Dimensionally Reduced Gravity and Vertex Operators

The Geroch group, isomorphic to the SL(2,R) affine Kac-Moody group, is an infinite dimensional solution generating group of Einstein's equations with two surface orthogonal commuting Killing vectors. We introduce another solution generating group for these equations, the dressing group, and discuss its connection with the Geroch group. We show that it acts transitively on a dense subset of moduli space. We use a new Lax pair expressing a twisted self-duality of this system and we study the dressing problem associated to it. We also describe how to use vertex operators to solve the reduced Einstein's equations. In particular this allows to find solutions by purely algebraic computations.

Differential Equations for Sine-Gordon Correlation Functions at the Free Fermion Point

We demonstrate that for the sine-Gordon theory at the free fermion point, the 2-point correlation functions of the fields $\exp (i\al Φ)$ for $0< \al < 1$ can be parameterized in terms of a solution to a sinh-Gordon-like equation. This result is derived by summing over intermediate multiparticle states and using the form factors to express this as a Fredholm determinant. The proof of the differential equations relies on a $\Zmath_2$ graded multiplication law satisfied by the integral operators of the Fredholm determinant. Using this methodology, we give a new proof of the differential equations which govern the spin and disorder field correlators in the Ising model.

Errata for: Differential Equations for Sine-Gordon Correlation Functions at the Free Fermion Point

We present some important corrections to our work which appeared in Nucl. Phys. B426 (1994) 534 (hep-th/9402144). Our previous results for the correlation functions $\langle e^{iαΦ(x)} e^{iα' Φ(0) } \rangle$ were only valid for $α= α'$, due to the fact that we didn't find the most general solution to the differential equations we derived. Here we present the solution corresponding to $α\neq α'$.

Null-vectors in Integrable Field Theory

The form factor bootstrap approach allows to construct the space of local fields in the massive restricted sine-Gordon model. This space has to be isomorphic to that of the corresponding minimal model of conformal field theory. We describe the subspaces which correspond to the Verma modules of primary fields in terms of the commutative algebra of local integrals of motion and of a fermion (Neveu-Schwarz or Ramond depending on the particular primary field). The description of null-vectors relies on the relation between form factors and deformed hyper-elliptic integrals. The null-vectors correspond to the deformed exact forms and to the deformed Riemann bilinear identity. In the operator language, the null-vectors are created by the action of two operators $\CQ$ (linear in the fermion) and $\CC$ (quadratic in the fermion). We show that by factorizing out the null-vectors one gets the space of operators with the correct character. In the classical limit, using the operators $\CQ$ and $\CC$ we obtain a new, very compact, description of the KdV hierarchy. We also discuss a beautiful relation with the method of Whitham.

Logarithmic Yangians in WZW models

A new action of the Yangians in the WZW models is displayed. Its structure is generic and level independent. This Yangian is the natural extension at the conformal point of the one unravelled in massive theories with current algebras. Expectingly, this new symmetry of WZW models will lead to a deeper understanding of the integrable structure of conformal field theories and their deformations.
