WKB - type approximations in the theory of vacuum particle creation in strong fields

Within the theory of vacuum creation of an $e^{+}e^{-}$ - plasma in the strong electric fields acting in the focal spot of counter-propagating laser beams we compare predictions on the basis of different WKB-type approximations with results obtained in the framework of a strict kinetic approach. Such a comparison demonstrates a considerable divergence results. We analyse some reasoning for this observation and conclude that WKB-type approximations have an insufficient foundation for QED in strong nonstationary fields. The results obtained in this work on the basis of the kinetic approach are most optimistic for the observation of an $e^{+}e^{-}$ - plasma in the range of optical and x-ray laser facilities. We discuss also the influence of unphysical features of non-adiabatic field models on the reliability of predictions of the kinetic theory.

Dynamical Schwinger effect: Properties of the $e^{+}e^{-}$ plasma created from vacuum in strong laser fields

We study the dynamical Schwinger effect in the vacuum excitation of the electron-positron plasma under action of a "laser pulse" of the simplest configuration: a linearly polarized, time-dependent and spatially homogeneous electric field. Methodical basis of this investigation is the kinetic equation which is an exact consequence of the basic equations of motion of QED in the considered field model. In the present work we investigate some features of the residual electron-positron plasma and the transient process of its formation.

Finite-size effects at the hadron-quark transition and heavy hybrid stars

We study the role of finite-size effects at the hadron-quark phase transition in a new hybrid equation of state constructed from an ab-initio Brückner-Hartree-Fock equation of state with the realistic Bonn-B potential for the hadronic phase and a covariant non-local Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model for the quark phase. We construct static hybrid star sequences and find that our model can support stable hybrid stars with an onset of quark matter below $2 M_\odot$ and a maximum mass above $2.17 M_\odot$ in agreement with recent observations. If the finite-size effects are taken into account the core is composed of pure quark matter. Provided that the quark vector channel interaction is small, and the finite size effects are taken into account, quark matter appears at densities 2-3 times the nuclear saturation density. In that case the proton fraction in the hadronic phase remains below the value required by the onset of the direct URCA process, so that the early onset of quark matter shall affect on the rapid cooling of the star.

Generalized Beth--Uhlenbeck approach to mesons and diquarks in hot, dense quark matter

An important first step in the program of hadronization of chiral quark models is the bosonization in meson and diquark channels. This procedure is presented at finite temperatures and chemical potentials for the SU(2) flavor case of the NJL model with special emphasis on the mixing between scalar meson and scalar diquark modes which occurs in the 2SC color superconducting phase. The thermodynamic potential is obtained in the gaussian approximation for the meson and diquark fields and it is given the Beth-Uhlenbeck form. This allows a detailed discussion of bound state dissociation in hot, dense matter (Mott effect) in terms of the in-medium scattering phase shift of two-particle correlations. It is shown for the case without meson-diquark mixing that the phase shift can be separated into a continuum and a resonance part. In the latter, the Mott transition manifests itself by a change of the phase shift at threshold by π in accordance with Levinson's theorem, when a bound state transforms to a resonance in the scattering continuum. The consequences for the contribution of pionic correlations to the pressure are discussed by evaluating the Beth-Uhlenbeck equation of state in different approximations. A similar discussion is performed for the scalar diquark channel in the normal phase. Further developments and applications of the developed approach are outlined.

Pion dissociation and Levinson's theorem in hot PNJL quark matter

Pion dissociation by the Mott effect in quark plasma is described within the generalized Beth-Uhlenbeck approach on the basis of the PNJL model which allows for a unified description of bound, resonant and scattering states. As a first approximation, we utilize the Breit-Wigner ansatz for the spectral function and clarify its relation to the complex mass pole solution of the pion Bethe-Salpeter equation. Application of the Levinson theorem proves that describing the pion Mott dissociation solely by means of spectral broadening of the pion bound state beyond T_Mott leaves out a significant aspect. Thus we acknowledge the importance of the continuum of scattering states and show its role for the thermodynamics of pion dissociation.

Crossover transition to quark matter in heavy hybrid stars

We study the possibility that the transition from hadron matter to quark matter at vanishing temperatures proceeds via crossover, similar to the crossover behavior found with lattice QCD studies at high temperatures. The purpose is to examine astrophysical consequences of this postulate by constructing hybrid star sequences fulfilling current experimental data.

Effective degrees of freedom in QCD thermodynamics

An effective model reproducing the equation of state of hadronic matter as obtained in recent lattice QCD simulations and from hadron resonance gas data is presented. The hadronic phase is described by means of an extended Mott-Hagedorn resonance gas while the QGP phase is described by the extended PNJL model. The dissociation of hadrons is obtained by including the state dependent hadron resonance width. The model gives a quantitative estimate for partial fractions of hadronic and partonic degrees of freedom above $T_c$.

Medium induced Lorentz symmetry breaking effects in nonlocal PNJL models

In this paper we detail the thermodynamics of two flavor nonlocal Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models for different parametrizations of the quark interaction regulators. The structure of the model is upgraded in order to allow for terms in the quark selfenergy which violate Lorentz invariance due to the presence of the medium. We examine the critical properties, the phase diagram as well as the equation of state. Furthermore, some aspects of the Mott effect for pions and sigma mesons are discussed explicitly within a nonlocal Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. In particular, we continued the meson polarization function in the complex energy plane and under certain approximations, we were able to extract the imaginary part as a function of the meson energy. We were not able to calculate the dynamical meson mass, and therefore resorted to a technical study of the temperature dependence of the meson width by replacing the meson energy with the temperature dependent spatial meson mass. Our results show that while the temperature behavior of the meson widths is qualitatively the same for a wide class of covariant regulators, the special case where the nonlocal interactions are introduced via the instanton liquid model singles out with a drastically different behavior.

Pion and sigma meson dissociation in a modified NJL model at finite temperature

We investigate pion and sigma meson correlations in hot quark matter within a modified NJL model. Special emphasis is on the transformation of mesonic bound states to resonances (Mott dissociation) when due to the partial chiral symmetry restoration with increasing temperature the threshold of quark-antiquark continuum states drops below the meson mass at the corresponding Mott temperature. The description is based on evaluating the polarization functions for quark-antiquark (meson) correlations as a function of the temperature and the results can be represented by introducing modulus and phase of the complex propagator functions for the mesonic states. We study the effect of modelling confinement by introducing a low-momentum cutoff in loop integrals. We make the ansatz that this cutoff is identified with the dynamically generated quark mass gap and find an increase of the continuum threshold which makes the otherwise unbound sigma meson a bound state in the vacuum. We discuss the in-medium behavior of the mesonic phase shifts including the Mott effect and find accordance with the Levinson theorem.

Effects of the liquid-gas phase transition and cluster formation on the symmetry energy

Various definitions of the symmetry energy are introduced for nuclei, dilute nuclear matter below saturation density and stellar matter, which is found in compact stars or core-collapse supernovae. The resulting differences are exemplified by calculations in a theoretical approach based on a generalized relativistic density functional for dense matter. It contains nucleonic clusters as explicit degrees of freedom with medium dependent properties that are derived for light clusters from a quantum statistical approach. With such a model the dissolution of clusters at high densities can be described. The effects of the liquid-gas phase transition in nuclear matter and of cluster formation in stellar matter on the density dependence of the symmetry energy are studied for different temperatures. It is observed that correlations and the formation of inhomogeneous matter at low densities and temperatures causes an increase of the symmetry energy as compared to calculations assuming a uniform uncorrelated spatial distribution of constituent baryons and leptons.

Nuclear medium cooling scenario in the light of new Cas A cooling data and the 2 M_sun pulsar mass measurements

Recently, Elshamounty et al. performed a reanalysis of the surface temperature of the neutron star in the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A on the basis of Chandra data measured during last decade, and added a new data point. We show that all reliably known temperature data of neutron stars including those belonging to Cassiopea A can be comfortably explained in our "nuclear medium cooling" scenario of neutron stars. The cooling rates account for medium-modified one-pion exchange in dense matter, polarization effects in the pair-breaking-formation processes operating on superfluid neutrons and protons paired in the 1S_0 state, and other relevant processes. The emissivity of the pair-breaking-formation process in the 3P_2 state is a tiny quantity within our scenario. Crucial for a successful description of the Cassiopeia A cooling proves to be the thermal conductivity from both, the electrons and nucleons, being reduced by medium effects. Moreover, we exploit an EoS which stiffens at high densities due to an excluded volume effect and is capable of describing a maximum mass of 2.1 M_sun, thus including the recent measurements of PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0348+0432.

An effective model of QCD thermodynamics

A combined effective model reproducing the equation of state of hadronic matter as obtained in recent lattice QCD simulations is presented. The model reproduces basic physical characteristics encountered in dense hadronic matter in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) phase and the lower temperature hadron resonance gas phase. The hadronic phase is described by means of an extended Mott-Hagedorn resonance gas while the QGP phase is described by the extended PNJL model. The dissociation of hadrons is obtained by including the state dependent hadron resonance width.

Quantum mechanical model for J/psi suppression in the LHC era

We discuss the interplay of screening, absorption and regeneration effects, on the quantum mechanical evolution of quarkonia states, within a time-dependent harmonic oscillator (THO) model with complex oscillator strength. We compare the results with data for R_AA/R_AA(CNM) from CERN and RHIC experiments. In the absence of a measurement of cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects at LHC we estimate their role and interpret the recent data from the ALICE experiment. We also discuss the temperature dependence of the real and imaginary parts of the oscillator frequency which stand for screening and absorption/regeneration, respectively. We point out that a structure in the J/psi suppression pattern for In-In collisions at SPS is possibly related to the recently found X(3872) state in the charmonium spectrum. Theoretical support for this hypothesis comes from the cluster expansion of the plasma Hamiltonian for heavy quarkonia in a strongly correlated medium.

Proving the CEP with compact stars?

We present a model for hybrid compact stars composed of a quark core and a hadronic mantle with an abrupt first order phase transition at the interface and in accordance with the latest astrophysical measurements of two 2 M_sun pulsars. We demonstrate the possibility of a disconnected mass-radius sequence (third family) of high-mass pulsars as a distinct feature due to a large jump $Δε$ in the energy density of the first order phase transition setting in at $ε_{\rm crit}\approx 500$ MeV/fm$^3$ and fulfilling $Δε/ε_{\rm crit} > 0.6$. We conclude that the measurement of so called \textit{twin} compact stars at high mass (~ 2 M_sun) would support the existence of a first order phase transition in symmetric matter at zero temperature entailing the existence of a critical end point (CEP) in the QCD phase diagram.

Chiral condensate in hadronic matter

The finite temperature chiral condensate for 2+1 quark flavors is considered in the framework of the hadron resonance gas model. This requires some dynamical information, for which two models are employed: one based on the quark structure of hadrons combined with the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio approach to chiral symmetry breaking, and one originating from gauge/gravity duality. Using these insights, hadronic sigma terms are discussed in the context of recent first principles results following from lattice QCD and chiral perturbation theory. For the condensate, in generic agreement with lattice data it is found that chiral symmetry restoration in the strange quark sector takes place at higher temperatures than in the light quark sector. The importance of this result for a recently proposed dynamical model of hadronic freeze-out in heavy-ion collisions is outlined.

Cluster virial expansion for nuclear matter within a quasiparticle statistical approach

Correlations in interacting many-particle systems can lead to the formation of clusters, in particular bound states and resonances. Systematic quantum statistical approaches allow to combine the nuclear statistical equilibrium description (law of mass action) with mean-field concepts. A chemical picture, which treats the clusters as distinct entities, serves as an intuitive concept to treat the low-density limit. Within a generalized Beth-Uhlenbeck approach, the quasiparticle virial expansion is extended to include arbitrary clusters, where special attention must be paid to avoid inconsistencies such as double counting. Correlations are suppressed with increasing density due to Pauli blocking. The contribution of the continuum to the virial coefficients can be reduced by considering clusters explicitly and introducing quasiparticle energies. The cluster-virial expansion for nuclear matter joins known benchmarks at low densities with those near saturation density.

Strangeness in the cores of neutron stars

The measurement of the mass 1.97 +/- 0.04 M_sun for PSR J1614-2230 provides a new constraint on the equation of state and composition of matter at high densities. In this contribution we investigate the possibility that the dense cores of neutron stars could contain strange quarks either in a confined state (hyperonic matter) or in a deconfined one (strange quark matter) while fulfilling a set of constraints including the new maximum mass constraint. We account for the possible appearance of hyperons within an extended version of the density-dependent relativistic mean-field model, including the phi-meson interaction channel. Deconfined quark matter is described by the color superconducting three-flavor NJL model.

Core collapse supernovae in the QCD phase diagram

We compare two classes of hybrid equations of state with a hadron-to-quark matter phase transition in their application to core collapse supernova simulations. The first one uses the quark bag model and describes the transition to three-flavor quark matter at low critical densities. The second one employs a Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model with parameters describing a phase transition to two-flavor quark matter at higher critical densities. These models possess a distinctly different temperature dependence of their transition densities which turns out to be crucial for the possible appearance of quark matter in supernova cores. During the early post bounce accretion phase quark matter is found only if the phase transition takes place at sufficiently low densities as in the study based on the bag model. The increase critical density with increasing temperature, as obtained for our PNJL parametrization, prevents the formation of quark matter. The further evolution of the core collapse supernova as obtained applying the quark bag model leads to a structural reconfiguration of the central proto-neutron star where, in addition to a massive pure quark matter core, a strong hydrodynamic shock wave forms and a second neutrino burst is released during the shock propagation across the neutrinospheres. We discuss the severe constraints in the freedom of choice of quark matter models and their parametrization due to the recently observed 2 solar mass pulsar and their implications for further studies of core collapse supernovae in the QCD phase diagram.
