The Cavity Approach to Parallel Dynamics of Ising Spins on a Graph

We use the cavity method to study parallel dynamics of disordered Ising models on a graph. In particular, we derive a set of recursive equations in single site probabilities of paths propagating along the edges of the graph. These equations are analogous to the cavity equations for equilibrium models and are exact on a tree. On graphs with exclusively directed edges we find an exact expression for the stationary distribution of the spins. We present the phase diagrams for an Ising model on an asymmetric Bethe lattice and for a neural network with Hebbian interactions on an asymmetric scale-free graph. For graphs with a nonzero fraction of symmetric edges the equations can be solved for a finite number of time steps. Theoretical predictions are confirmed by simulation results. Using a heuristic method, the cavity equations are extended to a set of equations that determine the marginals of the stationary distribution of Ising models on graphs with a nonzero fraction of symmetric edges. The results of this method are discussed and compared with simulations.

On the spectra of large sparse graphs with cycles

We present a general method for obtaining the spectra of large graphs with short cycles using ideas from statistical mechanics of disordered systems. This approach leads to an algorithm that determines the spectra of graphs up to a high accuracy. In particular, for (un)directed regular graphs with cycles of arbitrary length we derive exact and simple equations for the resolvent of the associated adjacency matrix. Solving these equations we obtain analytical formulas for the spectra and the boundaries of their support.

Spectra of sparse regular graphs with loops

We derive exact equations that determine the spectra of undirected and directed sparsely connected regular graphs containing loops of arbitrary length. The implications of our results to the structural and dynamical properties of networks are discussed by showing how loops influence the size of the spectral gap and the propensity for synchronization. Analytical formulas for the spectrum are obtained for specific length of the loops.

On the localization transition in symmetric random matrices

We study the behaviour of the inverse participation ratio and the localization transition in infinitely large random matrices through the cavity method. Results are shown for two ensembles of random matrices: Laplacian matrices on sparse random graphs and fully-connected Lévy matrices. We derive a critical line separating localized from extended states in the case of Lévy matrices. Comparison between theoretical results and diagonalization of finite random matrices is shown.

The phase diagram of Lévy spin glasses

We study the Lévy spin-glass model with the replica and the cavity method. In this model each spin interacts through a finite number of strong bonds and an infinite number of weak bonds. This hybrid behaviour of Lévy spin glasses becomes transparent in our solution: the local field contains a part propagating along a backbone of strong bonds and a Gaussian noise term due to weak bonds. Our method allows to determine the complete replica symmetric phase diagram, the replica symmetry breaking line and the entropy. The results are compared with simulations and previous calculations using a Gaussian ansatz for the distribution of fields.

Gallager error correcting codes for binary asymmetric channels

We derive critical noise levels for Gallager codes on asymmetric channels as a function of the input bias and the temperature. Using a statistical mechanics approach we study the space of codewords and the entropy in the various decoding regimes. We further discuss the relation of the convergence of the message passing algorithm with the endogeny property and complexity, characterizing solutions of recursive equations of distributions for cavity fields.

Small-world hypergraphs on a bond-disordered Bethe lattice

We study the thermodynamic properties of spin systems with bond-disorder on small-world hypergraphs, obtained by superimposing a one-dimensional Ising chain onto a random Bethe graph with p-spin interactions. Using transfer-matrix techniques, we derive fixed-point equations describing the relevant order parameters and the free energy, both in the replica symmetric and one step replica symmetry breaking approximation. We determine the static and dynamic ferromagnetic transition and the spinglass transition within replica symmetry for all temperatures, and demonstrate corrections to these results when one step replica symmetry breaking is taken into account. The results obtained are in agreement with Monte-Carlo simulations.

The synchronous BEG neural network with variable dilution

The thermodynamic and retrieval properties of the Blume-Emery-Griffiths neural network with synchronous updating and variable dilution are studied using replica mean-field theory. Several forms of dilution are allowed by pruning the different types of couplings present in the Hamiltonian. The appearance and properties of two-cycles are discussed. Capacity-temperature phase diagrams are derived for several values of the pattern activity. The results are compared with those for sequential updating. The effect of self-coupling is studied. Furthermore, the optimal combination of dilution parameters giving the largest critical capacity is obtained.

Two-cycles in spin systems: multi-state Ising-type ferromagnets

Hamiltonians for general multi-state spin-glass systems with Ising symmetry are derived for both sequential and synchronous updating of the spins. The possibly different behaviour caused by the way of updating is studied in detail for the (anti)-ferromagnetic version of the models, which can be solved analytically without any approximation, both thermodynamically via a free-energy calculation and dynamically using the generating functional approach. Phase diagrams are discussed and the appearance of two-cycles in the case of synchronous updating is examined. A comparative study is made for the Q-Ising and the Blume-Emery-Griffiths ferromagnets and some interesting physical differences are found. Numerical simulations confirm the results obtained.

A replica approach to the state-dependent synapses neural network

The replica method is applied to a neural network model with state-dependent synapses built from those patterns having a correlation with the state of the system greater than a certain threshold. Replica-symmetric and first-step replica-symmetry-breaking results are presented for the storage capacity at zero temperature as a function of this threshold value. A comparison is made with existing results based upon mean-field equations obtained by using a statistical method.

Categorization by a three-state attractor neural network

The categorization properties of an attractor network of three-state neurons which infers three-state concepts from examples are studied. The evolution equations governing the parallel dynamics at zero temperature for the overlap between the state of the network and the examples, the state of the network and the concepts as well as the neuron activity are discussed in the limit of extreme dilution. A transition from a retrieval region to a categorization region is found when the number of examples or their correlations are increased. If the pattern activity is small enough, the examples (concepts) are very well retrieved (categorized) for an appropriate choice of the zero-activity threshold of the neurons.

Parallel dynamics of fully connected Q-Ising neural networks

Using a probabilistic approach we study the parallel dynamics of fully connected Q-Ising neural networks for arbitrary Q. A Lyapunov function is shown to exist at zero temperature. A recursive scheme is set up to determine the time evolution of the order parameters through the evolution of the distribution of the local field. As an illustrative example, an explicit analysis is carried out for the first three time steps. For the case of the Q=3 model these theoretical results are compared with extensive numerical simulations. Finally, equilibrium fixed-point equations are derived and compared with the thermodynamic approach based upon the replica-symmetric mean-field approximation.
