Breakdown of the escape dynamics in Josephson junctions

We have identified anomalous behavior of the escape rate out of the zero-voltage state in Josephson junctions with a high critical current density Jc. For this study we have employed YBa2Cu3O7-x grain boundary junctions, which span a wide range of Jc and have appropriate electrodynamical parameters. Such high Jc junctions, when hysteretic, do not switch from the superconducting to the normal state following the expected stochastic Josephson distribution, despite having standard Josephson properties such as a Fraunhofer magnetic field pattern. The switching current distributions (SCDs) are consistent with nonequilibrium dynamics taking place on a local rather than a global scale. This means that macroscopic quantum phenomena seem to be practically unattainable for high Jc junctions. We argue that SCDs are an accurate means to measure nonequilibrium effects. This transition from global to local dynamics is of relevance for all kinds of weak links, including the emergent family of nanohybrid Josephson junctions. Therefore caution should be applied in the use of such junctions in, for instance, the search for Majorana fermions.

Weak continuous monitoring of a flux qubit using coplanar waveguide resonator

We study a flux qubit in a coplanar waveguide resonator by measuring transmission through the system. In our system with the flux qubit decoupled galvanically from the resonator, the intermediate coupling regime is achieved. In this regime dispersive readout is possible with weak backaction on the qubit. The detailed theoretical analysis and simulations give a good agreement with the experimental data and allow to make the qubit characterization.

Mesoscopic conductance fluctuations in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ grain boundary Junction at low temperature

The magneto-conductance in YBCO grain boundary Josephson junctions, displays fluctuations at low temperatures of mesoscopic origin. The morphology of the junction suggests that transport occurs in narrow channels across the grain boundary line, with a large Thouless energy. Nevertheless the measured fluctuation amplitude decreases quite slowly when increasing the voltage up to values about twenty times the Thouless energy, of the order of the nominal superconducting gap. Our findings show the coexistence of supercurrent and quasiparticle current in the junction conduction even at high nonequilibrium conditions. Model calculations confirm the reduced role of quasiparticle relaxation at temperatures up to 3 Kelvin.

Coherent Rabi response of a charge-phase qubit under microwave irradiation

We report on radio-frequency measurements of the charge-phase qubit being under continuous microwave irradiation in the state of weak coupling to a radio-frequency tank circuit. We studied the rf impedance dependence on the two important parameters such as power of microwave irradiation whose frequency is close to the gap between the two lowest qubit energy levels, and temperature of the internal heat bath. We have found that backaction effects of the qubit on the rf tank, and vice versa, tank on the qubit, lead to a negative as well as a positive real part of the qubit impedance Re$Z(\omega)$ seen by the tank. We have implemented noise spectroscopy measurements for direct impedance readout at the extreme points corresponding to maximum voltage response and obtained absolute values of about 0.017 $\Omega$ for the negative and positive Re$Z(\omega)$. Our results demonstrate the existence and persistence of the coherent single- and multi-photon Rabi dynamics of the qubit with both negative and positive dynamic resistance inserted into the tank in the temperature range of 10 to 200 mK.

Superconductivity in Sr2RuO4-Sr3Ru2O7 eutectic crystals

Superconducting behavior has been observed in the Sr2RuO4-Sr3Ru2O7 eutectic system as grown by the flux-feeding floating zone technique. A supercurrent flows across a single interface between Sr2RuO4 and Sr3Ru2O7 areas at distances that are far beyond those expected in a conventional proximity scenario. The current-voltage characteristics within the Sr3Ru2O7 macrodomain, as extracted from the eutectic, exhibit signatures of superconductivity in the bilayered ruthenate. Detailed microstructural, morphological and compositional analyses address issues on the concentration and the size of Sr2RuO4 inclusions within the Sr3Ru2O7 matrix. We speculate on the possibility of inhomogeneous superconductivity in the eutectic Sr3Ru2O7 and exotic pairing induced by the Sr2RuO4 inclusions.

Coherent quasiparticle transport in grain boundary junctions employing high-Tc superconductors

Magneto-fluctuations of the normal resistance RN have been reproducibly observed in YBa2Cu3O7-d biepitaxial grain boundary junctions at low temperatures. We attribute them to mesoscopic transport in narrow channels across the grain boundary line, occurring in an unusual energy regime. The Thouless energy appears to be the relevant energy scale. Possible implications on the understanding of coherent transport of quasiparticles in HTS and of the dissipation mechanisms are discussed.

Observation of mesoscopic conductance fluctuations in YBaCuO grain boundary Josephson Junctions

Magneto-fluctuations of the normal resistance R_N have been reproducibly observed in high critical temp erature superconductor (HTS) grain boundary junctions, at low temperatures. We attribute them to mesoscopic transport in narrow channels across the grain boundary line. The Thouless energy appears to be the relevant energy scale. Our findings have significant implications on quasiparticle relaxation and coherent transport in HTS grain boundaries.

Multiphoton transitions between energy levels in a phase-biased Cooper-pair box

We investigated both theoretically and experimentally dynamic features of a phase-biased charge qubit consisting of a single-Cooper-pair transistor closed by a superconducting loop. The effective inductance of the qubit was probed by a high-quality tank circuit. In the presence of a microwave power, with a frequency of the order of the qubit energy level separation, an alteration of the qubit inductance was observed. We demonstrate that this effect is caused by the redistribution of the qubit level population. The excitation of the qubit by one-, two-, and three-photon processes was detected. Quantitative agreement between theory and experimental data was found.

Dissipation in ultra-thin current-carrying superconducting bridges; evidence for quantum tunneling of Pearl vortices

We have made current-voltage (IV) measurements of artificially layered high-$T_c$ thin-film bridges. Scanning SQUID microscopy of these films provides values for the Pearl lengths $Λ$ that exceed the bridge width, and shows that the current distributions are uniform across the bridges. At high temperatures and high currents the voltages follow the power law $V \propto I^n$, with $n=Φ_0^2/8π^2Λk_B T+1$, and at high temperatures and low-currents the resistance is exponential in temperature, in good agreement with the predictions for thermally activated vortex motion. At low temperatures, the IV's are better fit by $\ln V$ linear in $I^{-2}$. This is expected if the low temperature dissipation is dominated by quantum tunneling of Pearl vortices.

Reading-out the state inductively and microwave spectroscopy of an interferometer-type charge qubit

We implemented experimentally an interferometer-type charge qubit consisting of a single-Cooper-pair transistor closed by a superconducting loop that is in flip-chip configuration inductively coupled to a radio frequency tank circuit. The tank permits to readout the qubit state, acting as inductance measuring apparatus. By applying continuous microwave power to the quantum device, we observed inductance alterations caused by redistributions of the energy level populations. From the measured data, we extracted the energy gap between ground and upper levels as a function of the transistor quasicharge as well as the Josephson phase across both junctions.

Radio-Frequency Method for Investigation of Quantum Properties of Superconducting Structures

We implement the impedance measurement technique (IMT) for characterization of interferometer-type superconducting qubits. In the framework of this method, the interferometer loop is inductively coupled to a high-quality tank circuit. We show that the IMT is a powerful tool to study a response of externally controlled two-level system to different types of excitations. Conclusive information about qubits is obtained from the read-out of the tank properties.

Low-frequency measurement of the tunneling amplitude in a flux qubit

We have observed signatures of resonant tunneling in an Al three-junction qubit, inductively coupled to a Nb LC tank circuit. The resonant properties of the tank oscillator are sensitive to the effective susceptibility (or inductance) of the qubit, which changes drastically as its flux states pass through degeneracy. The tunneling amplitude is estimated from the data. We find good agreement with the theoretical predictions in the regime of their validity.
