Macrospin Dynamics in Antiferromagnets Triggered by Sub-20 femtosecond Injection of Nanomagnons

The understanding of how the sub-nanoscale exchange interaction evolves in macroscale correlations and ordered phases of matter, such as magnetism and superconductivity, requires to bridge the quantum and classical worlds. This monumental challenge has so far only been achieved for systems close to their thermodynamical equilibrium. Here we follow in real time the ultrafast dynamics of the macroscale magnetic order parameter triggered by the impulsive optical generation of spin excitations with the shortest possible nanometer-wavelength and femtosecond-period. Our experiments also disclose a possibility for the coherent control of these femtosecond nanomagnons, which are defined by the exchange energy. These findings open up novel opportunities for fundamental research on the role of short-wavelength spin excitations in magnetism and high-temperature superconductivity, since they provide a macroscopic probe of the femtosecond dynamics of sub-nanometer spin-spin correlations and, ultimately, of the exchange energy. With this approach it becomes possible to trace the dynamics of such short-range magnetic correlations for instance during phase transitions. Moreover, our work suggests that nanospintronics and nanomagnonics can employ phase-controllable spin waves with frequencies in the 20 THz domain.

Constraining angular momentum transport processes in stellar interiors with red-giant stars in the open cluster NGC6819

Clusters are excellent test benches for verification and improvement of stellar evolution theory. The recent detection of solar-like oscillations in G-K giants in the open cluster NGC6819 with Kepler provides us with independent constraints on the masses and radii of stars on the red giant branch, as well as on the distance to clusters and their ages. We present, for NGC6819, evolutionary models by considering rotation-induced mixing ; and the theoretical low-l frequencies of our stellar models.

Competition between the Pseudogap and Superconducting States of Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca$_{0.92}$Y$_{0.08}$Cu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ Single Crystals Revealed by Ultrafast Broadband Optical Reflectivity

Ultrafast broadband transient reflectivity experiments are performed to study the interplay between the non-equilibrium dynamics of the pseudogap and the superconducting phases in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca$_{0.92}$Y$_{0.08}$Cu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$. Once superconductivity is established the relaxation of the pseudogap proceeds $\sim$ 2 times faster than in the normal state, and the corresponding transient reflectivity variation changes sign after $\sim$ 0.5 ps. The results can be described by a set of coupled differential equations for the pseudogap and for the superconducting order parameter. The sign and strength of the coupling term suggest a remarkably weak competition between the two phases, allowing their coexistence.
