Correlated electronic states at a ferromagnetic oxide interface

We propose a minimal tight-binding model for the electronic interface layer of the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructure with oxygen vacancies. In this model, the effective carriers are subject to oxygen vacancy induced magnetic impurities. Both the effects of random on-site potentials and Zeeman-like exchange interactions between correlated carriers and magnetic impurities are taken into account. By applying the combined coherent potential approximation (CPA) and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) for a ferromagnetic state, we uncover a disordered Fermi-liquid regime for the majority-spins and a low energy scale which controls the transport of the minority-spin carriers, both induced by the magnetic impurities.

Exact Floquet solutions in a Parity-Time-Symmetric Rabi Model

It is shown that a semiclassical Rabi model with parity-time (PT) symmetry has a hidden $sl(2)$ symmetry and hence possesses quasi-exact solutions. These are located precisely at the exceptional points of the spectrum, the boundaries of the PT-symmetric phase. The corresponding constraints on the model parameters can be interpreted as a resonance relationship between the constant and periodic driving terms.

Decoherence Effects Break Reciprocity in Matter Transport

The decoherence of quantum states defines the transition between the quantum world and classical physics. Decoherence or, analogously, quantum mechanical collapse events pose fundamental questions regarding the interpretation of quantum mechanics and are technologically relevant because they limit the coherent information processing performed by quantum computers. We have discovered that the transition regime enables a novel type of matter transport. Applying this discovery, we present nanoscale devices in which decoherence, modeled by random quantum jumps, produces fundamentally novel phenomena by interrupting the unitary dynamics of electron wave packets. Noncentrosymmetric conductors with mesoscopic length scales act as two-terminal rectifiers with unique properties. In these devices, the inelastic interaction of itinerant electrons with impurities acting as electron trapping centers leads to a novel steady state characterized by partial charge separation between the two leads, or, in closed circuits to the generation of persistent currents. The interface between the quantum and the classical worlds therefore provides a novel transport regime of value for the realization of a new category of mesoscopic electronic devices.

Phase Filters for a Novel Kind of Asymmetric Transport

We present the concept of nonreciprocal interferometers. These two-way devices let particles pass in both directions, but in one direction break the phase of the particles' wave functions. Such filters can be realized by using, for example, asymmetric quantum rings. Furthermore, we propose arrangements of these interferometers to obtain larger interferometers which are expected to exhibit a puzzling behavior that resembles Maxwell demon action. We indicate an opportunity to resolve this puzzle experimentally.

Entanglement Classification with Algebraic Geometry

We approach multipartite entanglement classification in the symmetric subspace in terms of algebraic geometry, its natural language. We show that the class of symmetric separable states has the structure of a Veronese variety and that its $k$-secant varieties are SLOCC invariants. Thus SLOCC classes gather naturally into families. This classification presents useful properties such as a linear growth of the number of families with the number of particles, and nesting, i.e. upward consistency of the classification. We attach physical meaning to this classification through the required interaction length of parent Hamiltonians. We show that the states $W_N$ and GHZ$_N$ are in the same secant family and that, effectively, the former can be obtained in a limit from the latter. This limit is understood in terms of tangents, leading to a refinement of the previous families. We compute explicitly the classification of symmetric states with $N\leq 4$ qubits in terms of both secant families and its refinement using tangents. This paves the way to further use of projective varieties in algebraic geometry to solve open problems in entanglement theory.

Spectral collapse via two-phonon interactions in trapped ions

Two-photon processes have so far been considered only as resulting from frequency-matched second-order expansions of light-matter interaction, with consequently small coupling strengths. However, a variety of novel physical phenomena arises when such coupling values become comparable with the system characteristic frequencies. Here, we propose a realistic implementation of two-photon quantum Rabi and Dicke models in trapped-ion technologies. In this case, effective two-phonon processes can be explored in all relevant parameter regimes. In particular, we show that an ion chain under bichromatic laser drivings exhibits a rich dynamics and highly counterintuitive spectral features, such as interaction-induced spectral collapse.

Solution of the two-mode quantum Rabi model using extended squeezed states

The two-mode quantum Rabi model with bilinear coupling is studied using extended squeezed states. We derive $G$-functions for each Bargmann index $q$% . They share a common structure with the $G$-function of the one-photon and two-photon quantum Rabi models. The regular spectrum is given by zeros of the $G$-function while the conditions for the presence of doubly degenerate (exceptional) eigenvalues are obtained in closed form through the lifting property. The simple singularity structure of the $G$-function allows to draw conclusions about the distribution of eigenvalues along the real axis and to understand the spectral collapse phenomenon when the coupling reaches a critical value.

Observation of a Griffiths phase in paramagnetic La1-xSrxMnO3

We report on the discovery of a novel triangular phase regime in the system La1-xSrxMnO3 by means of electron spin resonance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. This phase is characterized by the coexistence of ferromagnetic entities within the globally paramagnetic phase far above the magnetic ordering temperature. The nature of this phase can be understood in terms of Griffiths singularities arising due to the presence of correlated quenched disorder in the orthorhombic phase.

On the Spectrum of the XXZ-chain at roots of unity

In a recent paper (cond-mat/0009279), Fabricius and McCoy studied the spectrum of the spin 1/2 XXZ-model at Delta = (q+q^{-1})/2 and q^{2N}=1 for integer N >1. They found a certain pattern of degeneracies and linked it to the sl(2)-loop symmetry present in the commensurable spin sector (N divides S^z). We show that the degeneracies are due to zero-energy, transparent excitations, the cyclic bound states. These exist both in commensurable and incommensurable sectors, indicating a symmetry, of which sl(2)-loop is a partial manifestation. Our approach treats both sectors on even footing and yields an analytical expression for the degeneracies in the case N = 3.

Physical picture of the gapped excitation spectrum of the one-dimensional Hubbard model

A simple picture for the spectrum of the one-dimensional Hubbard model is presented using a classification of the eigenstates based on an intuitive bound-state Bethe-Ansatz approach. This approach allows us to prove a "string hypothesis" for complex momenta and derive an exact formulation of the Bethe-Ansatz equations including all states. Among other things we show that all gapped eigenstates have the Bethe-Ansatz form, contrary to assertions in the literature. The simplest excitations in the upper Hubbard band are computed: we find an unusual dispersion close to half-filling.

Bound States in the One-dimensional Hubbard Model

The Bethe Ansatz equations for the one-dimensional Hubbard model are reexamined. A new procedure is introduced to properly include bound states. The corrected equations lead to new elementary excitations away from half-filling.

Competition of Phonons and Magnetic Interaction in One-Dimensional Fermion Systems

We consider a system of spin-dependent fermions on a one-dimensional lattice which is coupled to phonons. The phonons create either a Peierls instability by breaking the translational invariance or create long range correlations. On the other hand, there is a spin-dependent Hubbard-like interaction which competes with the effective fermion-fermion interaction induced by the phonons. We investigate the competition of both interactions using a renormalization group calculation for weak interaction. The renormalization group transformation creates a third interaction. It turns out that non-interacting fermions represent a semi-stable fixed point of the fermion system.

Spontaneous Magnetization in the Disorder dominated Phase of the Twodimensional Random Bond Ising Model

The selfconsistent approach to the 2D Ising Model with quenched random bonds is extended to the full lattice theory of four real fermions. The additional degrees of freedom, neglected in the renormalization-group theory, lead to a new phase between the ferromagnetic and the paramagnetic phase. The disorder averaged spin-spin correlation function decays exponentially with distance. The corresponding correlation length is $1/η^2$, where $η$ denotes the order parameter of the new phase introduced by Ziegler.
