Doping-induced magnetism in the semiconducting B20 compound RuGe

RuGe, a diamagnetic small-band gap semiconductor, and CoGe, a nonmagnetic semimetal, are both isostructural to the Kondo insulator FeSi and the skyrmion lattice host MnSi. Here, we have explored the magnetic and transport properties of Co-doped RuGe: Ru$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Ge. For small values of $x$, a magnetic ground state emerges with $T_{c}\approx$ 5 $-$ 9 K, which is accompanied by a moderate decrease in electrical resistivity and a Seebeck coefficient that indicates electron-like charge carriers. The magnetization, magnetoresistance, and the specific heat capacity all resemble that of Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si for similar Co substitution levels, suggesting that Ru$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Ge hosts equally as interesting magnetic and charge carrier transport properties.

Quantum oscillations and a non-trivial Berry phase in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor BiPd

We report the measurements of de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor BiPd. Several pieces of a complex multi-sheet Fermi surface are identified, including a small pocket (frequency 40 T) which is three dimensional and anisotropic. From the temperature dependence of the amplitude of the oscillations, the cyclotron effective mass is ($0.18$ $\pm$ 0.1) $m_e$. Further analysis showed a non-trivial $\pi$-Berry phase is associated with the 40 T pocket, which strongly supports the presence of topological states in bulk BiPd and may result in topological superconductivity due to the proximity coupling to other bands.

Complex superconductivity in the noncentrosymmetric compound Re$_{6}$Zr

We report the electronic structure, synthesis, and measurements of the magnetic, transport, and thermal properties of the polycrystalline noncentrosymmetric compound Re$_{6}$Zr. We observed a bulk superconducting transition at temperature $T_{c}$ $\sim$ 6.7 K, and measured the resistivity, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and the London penetration depth below the transition, as well as performed doping and pressure studies. From these measurements we extracted the critical field, and the superconducting parameters of Re$_{6}$Zr. Our measurements indicate a relatively weak to moderate contribution from a triplet component to the order parameter, and favor a full superconducting gap, although we cannot exclude the existence of point nodes based on our data.

A dynamical mean-field approximation study of a tight-binding model for Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As

The magneto-optical properties of the ferromagnetic semiconductor Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As are studied within the dynamical mean-field approximation (DMFA). A material-specific multiband $sp^{3}$ tight-binding Hamiltonian is employed for the dispersion of the GaAs host. The calculated density of states shows an impurity band and a distorted valence band for large and moderate values of magnetic coupling, respectively. Upon using the more realistic band structure, the ferromagnetic transition temperature is significantly closer to the experimental results than the previous predictions of $k\cdot p$ models. The optical conductivity shows a Drude-like peak at low frequencies which is suppressed by increasing of the magnetic coupling.

Structure and physical properties of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo3Al2C

We have synthesized polycrystalline samples of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo3Al2C by arc and RF melting, measured its transport, magnetic and thermodynamic properties, and computed its band structure. Experimental results indicate a bulk superconducting transition at Tc ~ 9.2 K, while the density of states at the Fermi surface is found to be dominated by Mo d-orbitals. Using the measured values for the lower critical field Hc1, upper critical field Hc2, and the specific heat C, we estimated the thermodynamic critical field Hc(0), coherence length ξ(0), penetration depth λ(0), and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ(0). The specific heat jump at Tc, ΔC/γTc = 2.14, suggests that Mo3Al2C is moderately-to-strongly coupled, consistent with the fast opening of the gap, as evidenced by the rapid release of entropy below Tc from our electronic specific heat measurements. Above 2K the electronic specific heat exhibits the power law behavior, suggesting that synthesis of single crystals and measurements at lower temperature are needed to establish whether the gap is anisotropic. The estimated value of the upper critical field Hc2(0) is close to the calculated Pauli limit, therefore further studies are needed to determine whether the absence of an inversion center results in a significant admixture of the triplet component of the order parameter.
