Observation of near-scission "polar" and "equatorial" proton emission in heavy-ion induced fission

Proton and $α$-particle energy spectra were measured in coincidence with fission fragments at different relative angles in $^{16}$O (96 MeV) + $^{232}$Th reaction. The multiplicity spectra were analyzed within the framework of a Moving Source Disentangling Analysis (MSDA) to determine contributions from different emission stages. The MSDA conclusively shows ``Near Scission Emission (NSE)" as an essential component in the multiplicity spectra. In contrast to NSE $α$ particles which emit mainly perpendicular (``equatorial emission"), the NSE protons are observed to be emitted perpendicular as well as parallel (``polar emission") to the fission axis with similar intensities ($\sim$20\% for each). Thus, around 40\% of total pre-scission protons are emitted near the scission stage, whereas the same fraction for $α$ particles is only around 10\%. The inevitable presence of ``polar" and ``equatorial" NSE protons in a heavy-ion induced fission has been observed for the first time. Present results open up a new avenue to study the heavy-ion induced fission dynamics.

Measurement of relative isotopic yield distribution of even-even fission fragments from $^{235}$U($n_{th}$,$f$) following $γ$ ray spectroscopy

A detailed investigation on the relative isotopic distributions has been carried out for the first time in case of even-even correlated fission fragments for the $^{235}$U($n_{th}$,$f$) fission reaction. High-statistics data were obtained in a prompt $γ$ ray spectroscopy measurement during the EXILL campaign at ILL, Grenoble, France. The extensive off-line analysis of the coincidence data have been carried out using four different coincidence methods. Combining the results from 2-dimensional $γ-γ$ and 3-dimensional $γ-γ-γ$ coincidence analysis, a comprehensive picture of the relative isotopic yield distributions of the even-even neutron-rich fission fragments has emerged. The experimentally observed results have been substantiated by the theoretical calculations based on a novel approach of isospin conservation, and a reasonable agreement has been obtained. The calculations following the semi-empirical GEF model have also been carried out. The results from the GEF model calculations are found to be in fair agreement with the experimental results.

Determination of hexadecapole ($β_{4}$) deformation of the light-mass nucleus $^{24}$Mg using quasi-elastic measurement

Quasi-elastic scattering measurements have been performed using $^{16}$O and $^{24}$Mg projectiles off $^{90}$Zr at energies around the Coulomb barrier. Experimental data have been analyzed in the framework of coupled channels (CC) calculations using the code CCFULL. The quasi-elastic scattering excitation function and derived barrier distribution for $^{16}$O + $^{90}$Zr reaction are well reproduced by the CC calculations using the vibrational coupling strengths for $^{90}$Zr reported in the literature. Using these vibrational coupling strengths, a Bayesian analysis is carried out for $^{24}$Mg + $^{90}$Zr reaction. The $β_{2}$ and $β_{4}$ values for $^{24}$Mg are determined to be $+0.43 \pm 0.02$ and $ - 0.11 \pm 0.02$, respectively. The $β_{2}$ parameter determined in the present work is in good agreement with results obtained using inelastic scattering probes. The hexadecapole deformation of $^{24}$Mg has been measured very precisely for the first time. Present results establish that quasi-elastic scattering could provide a useful probe to determine the ground state deformation of atomic nuclei.

No influence of a N=126 Neutron Shell Closure in Fission Fragment Mass Distributions

Mass distributions of the fragments in the fission of $^{206}$Po and the N=126 neutron shell closed nucleus $^{210}$Po have been measured. No significant deviation of mass distributions has been found between $^{206}$Po and $^{210}$Po, indicating the absence of shell correction at the saddle point in both the nuclei, contrary to the reported angular anisotropy and pre-scission neutron multiplicity results. This new result provides benchmark data to test the new fission dynamical models to study the effect of shell correction on the potential energy surface at saddle point.

Small Quadrupole Deformation for the Dipole Bands in 112In

High spin states in $^{112}$In were investigated using $^{100}$Mo($^{16}$O, p3n) reaction at 80 MeV. The excited level have been observed up to 5.6 MeV excitation energy and spin $\sim$ 20$\hbar$ with the level scheme showing three dipole bands. The polarization and lifetime measurements were carried out for the dipole bands. Tilted axis cranking model calculations were performed for different quasi-particle configurations of this doubly odd nucleus. Comparison of the calculations of the model with the B(M1) transition strengths of the positive and negative parity bands firmly established their configurations.
