Incidence of the boundary shape in the effective theory of fractional quantum Hall edges

Starting from a microscopic description of a system of strongly interacting electrons in a strong magnetic field in a finite geometry, we construct the boundary low energy effective theory for a fractional quantum Hall droplet taking into account the effects of a smooth edge. The effective theory obtained is the standard chiral boson theory (chiral Luttinger theory) with an additional self-interacting term which is induced by the boundary. As an example of the consequences of this model, we show that such modification leads to a non-universal reduction in the tunnelling exponent which is independent of the filling fraction. This is in qualitative agreement with experiments, that systematically found exponents smaller than those predicted by the ordinary chiral Luttinger liquid theory.

Fermi Liquid instabilities in two-dimensional lattice models

We develop a procedure for detecting Fermi liquid instabilities by extending the analysis of Pomeranchuk to two-dimensional lattice systems. The method is very general and straightforward to apply, thus providing a powerful tool for the search of exotic phases. We test it by applying it to a lattice electron model with interactions leading to $s$ and d-wave instabilities.

Incidence of the boundary shape in the tunnelling exponent of electrons into fractional quantum Hall edges

Experiments on tunneling into fractional quantum Hall droplets systematically found tunneling exponents smaller than those predicted by the ordinary chiral Luttinger liquid theory. In this note, by considering the effects of a smooth boundary, we propose a modification of the theory that predicts a reduced exponent, in qualitative agreement with experiments. Such modification consists on a self-interaction cubic term, containing higher derivatives of the chiral boson field, that provides a non-universal one loop correction to the propagator.

Quantum phase transitions in trimerized zig-zag spin ladders

We analyze the effects of a trimerized modulation in a quantum spin $S=\frac12$ zig-zag ladder at the magnetization plateau $M=1/3$. Such periodicity is argued to be stemmed from lattice deformations by phonons. The interplay between frustration and exchange modulation is well described by an effective triple sine-Gordon field theory close to the homogeneous ladder and by block-spin perturbation theory in the weakly coupled trimers regime. The characteristic triple degeneracy of the ground state for homogeneous ladders gives place to modulation driven quantum phase transitions, leading to a rich phase diagram including up-up-down, quantum plateau and gapless plateau states.

Excitations with fractional spin less than 1/2 in frustrated magnetoelastic chains

We study the magnetic excitations on top of the plateaux states recently discovered in spin-Peierls systems in a magnetic field. We show by means of extensive density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) computations and an analytic approach that one single spin-flip on top of $M=1-\frac2N$ ($N=3,4,...$) plateau decays into $N$ elementary excitations each carrying a fraction $\frac1N$ of the spin. This fractionalization goes beyond the well-known decay of one magnon into two spinons taking place on top of the M=0 plateau. Concentrating on the $\frac13$ plateau (N=3) we unravel the microscopic structure of the domain walls which carry fractional spin-$\frac13$, both from theory and numerics. These excitations are shown to be noninteracting and should be observable in x-ray and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments.

The spin-Peierls transition beyond the adiabatic approximation

We develop a theory of the spin-Peierls transition taking into account the three dimensional character of the phonon field. Our approach does not rely on the adiabatic or mean field treatment for the phonons. It is instead based in the exact integration of the phonon field, the exact long wavelength solution of the one chain spin problem, and then a mean field approximation for the interchain interaction. We show that the spin gap and the critical temperature are strongly reduced due to the finite frequency effects of the phonon coupling transverse to the magnetic chains. We claim that our results should be applicable to the inorganic spin-Peierls compound CuGeO$_3$. We show that the long standing discussion on absence of a soft mode in this compound can be naturally resolved within our theory.

Finite-temperature ordering in a two-dimensional highly frustrated spin model

We investigate the classical counterpart of an effective Hamiltonian for a strongly trimerized kagome lattice. Although the Hamiltonian only has a discrete symmetry, the classical groundstate manifold has a continuous global rotational symmetry. Two cases should be distinguished for the sign of the exchange constant. In one case, the groundstate has a 120^\circ spin structure. To determine the transition temperature, we perform Monte-Carlo simulations and measure specific heat, the order parameter as well as the associated Binder cumulant. In the other case, the classical groundstates are macroscopically degenerate. A thermal order-by-disorder mechanism is predicted to select another 120^\circ spin-structure. A finite but very small transition temperature is detected by Monte-Carlo simulations using the exchange method.

Influence of lattice distortions in classical spin systems

We investigate a simple model of a frustrated classical spin chain coupled to adiabatic phonons under an external magnetic field. A thorough study of the magnetization properties is carried out both numerically and analytically. We show that already a moderate coupling with the lattice can stabilize a plateau at 1/3 of the saturation and discuss the deformation of the underlying lattice in this phase. We also study the transition to saturation where either a first or second order transition can occur, depending on the couplings strength.

Magnetization plateaux induced by a coupling to the lattice

We investigate a simple model of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled to adiabatic phonons under an external magnetic field. Using field theoretic methods complemented by extensive Density Matrix Renormalisation Group techniques generalized to include self-consistent lattice distortions, we show that magnetization plateaux at non-trivial rational values of the magnetization can be stabilized by the lattice coupling. We suggest that such a scenario could be relevant for some low dimensional frustrated spin-Peierls compounds.

Quantum kagome antiferromagnet in a magnetic field: Low-lying non-magnetic excitations versus valence-bond crystal order

We study the ground state properties of a quantum antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice in the presence of a magnetic field, paying particular attention to the stability of the plateau at magnetization 1/3 of saturation and the nature of its ground state. We discuss fluctuations around classical ground states and argue that quantum and classical calculations at the harmonic level do not lead to the same result in contrast to the zero-field case. For spin S=1/2 we find a magnetic gap below which an exponential number of non-magnetic excitations are present. Moreover, such non-magnetic excitations also have a (much smaller) gap above the three-fold degenerate ground state. We provide evidence that the ground state has long-range order of valence-bond crystal type with nine spins in the unit cell.

Ground state and low-lying excitations of the spin-1/2 XXZ model on the kagome lattice at magnetization 1/3

We study the ground state and low-lying excitations of the S=1/2 XXZ antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice at magnetization one third of the saturation. An exponential number of non-magnetic states is found below a magnetic gap. The non-magnetic excitations also have a gap above the ground state, but it is much smaller than the magnetic gap. This ground state corresponds to an ordered pattern with resonances in one third of the hexagons. The spin-spin correlation function is short ranged, but there is long-range order of valence-bond crystal type.

Bound states in weakly disordered spin ladders

We study the appearance of bound states in the spin gap of spin-1/2 ladders induced by weak bond disorder. Starting from the strong-coupling limit, i.e., the limit of weakly coupled dimers, we perform a projection on the single-triplet subspace and derive the position of bound states for the single impurity problem of one modified coupling as well as for small impurity clusters. The case of a finite concentration of impurities is treated with the coherent-potential approximation in the strong-coupling limit and compared with numerical results. Furthermore, we analyze the details in the structure of the density of states and relate their origin to the influence of impurity clusters.

Bond-impurity induced bound states in disordered spin-1/2 ladders

We discuss the effect of weak bond-disorder in two-leg spin ladders on the dispersion relation of the elementary triplet excitations with a particular focus on the appearance of bound states in the spin gap. Both the cases of modified exchange couplings on the rungs and the legs of the ladder are analyzed. Based on a projection on the single-triplet subspace, the single-impurity and small cluster problems are treated analytically in the strong-coupling limit. Numerically, we study the problem of a single impurity in a spin ladder by exact diagonalization to obtain the low-lying excitations. At finite concentrations and to leading order in the inter-rung coupling, we compare the spectra obtained from numerical diagonalization of large systems within the single-triplet subspace with the results of diagrammatic techniques, namely low-concentration and coherent-potential approximations. The contribution of small impurity clusters to the density of states is also discussed.

Transport in dimerized and frustrated spin systems

We analyze the Drude weight for both spin and thermal transport of one-dimensional spin-1/2 systems by means of exact diagonalization at finite temperatures. While the Drude weights are non-zero for finite systems, we find indications of a vanishing of the Drude weights in the thermodynamic limit for non-integrable models implying normal transport behavior.

Thermal conductivity of one-dimensional spin-1/2 systems

We analyze the thermal conductivity of frustrated spin-1/2 chains within linear-response theory focusing on its frequency dependence at finite temperatures. Using exact diagonalization, the low-frequency limit of the thermal conductivity is discussed in the high-temperature regime.

Comment on "Anomalous Thermal Conductivity of Frustrated Heisenberg Spin Chains and Ladders"

In a recent letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 156603 (2002); cond-mat/0201300], Alvarez and Gros have numerically analyzed the Drude weight for thermal transport in spin ladders and frustrated chains of up to 14 sites and have proposed that it remains finite in the thermodynamic limit. In this comment, we argue that this conclusion cannot be sustained if the finite-size analysis is taken to larger system sizes.

Ground states of quantum kagome antiferromagnets in a magnetic field

We study the ground state properties of a quantum antiferromagnet in the kagome lattice in the presence of a magnetic field, paying particular attention to the stability of the plateau at magnetization 1/3 of saturation. While the plateau is reinforced by certain deformations of the lattice, like the introduction of structural defect lines and against an Ising anisotropy, ground state correlations are seen to be quite different and the undistorted SU(2) case appears to be rather special.

Numerical Jordan-Wigner approach for two dimensional spin systems

We present a numerical self consistent variational approach based on the Jordan-Wigner transformation for two dimensional spin systems. We apply it to the study of the well known quantum (S=1/2) antiferromagnetic XXZ system as a function of the easy-axis anisotropy Δon a periodic square lattice. For the SU(2) case the method converges to a Néel ordered ground state irrespectively of the input density profile used and in accordance with other studies. This shows the potential utility of the proposed method to investigate more complicated situations like frustrated or disordered systems.
