Determination of the width of the top quark

We extract the total width of the top quark, Gamma_t, from the partial decay width Gamma(t -> W b) measured using the t-channel cross section for single top quark production and from the branching fraction B(t -> W b) measured in ttbar events using up to 2.3 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 Collaboration at the Tevatron ppbar Collider. The result is Gamma_t = 1.99 +0.69 -0.55 GeV, which translates to a top-quark lifetime of tau_t = (3.3 +1.3 -0.9) x 10^-25 s. Assuming a high mass fourth generation b' quark and unitarity of the four-generation quark-mixing matrix, we set the first upper limit on |Vtb'| < 0.63 at 95% C.L.

Tube Width Fluctuations in F-Actin Solutions

We determine the statistics of the local tube width in F-actin solutions, beyond the usually reported mean value. Our experimental observations are explained by a segment fluid theory based on the binary collision approximation (BCA). In this systematic generalization of the standard mean-field approach effective polymer segments interact via a potential representing the topological constraints. The analytically predicted universal tube width distribution with a stretched tail is in good agreement with the data.

Study of the interactions of pions in the CALICE silicon-tungsten calorimeter prototype

A prototype silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter for an ILC detector was tested in 2007 at the CERN SPS test beam. Data were collected with electron and hadron beams in the energy range 8 to 80 GeV. The analysis described here focuses on the interactions of pions in the calorimeter. One of the main objectives of the CALICE program is to validate the Monte Carlo tools available for the design of a full-sized detector. The interactions of pions in the Si-W calorimeter are therefore confronted with the predictions of various physical models implemented in the GEANT4 simulation framework.

Construction and Commissioning of the CALICE Analog Hadron Calorimeter Prototype

An analog hadron calorimeter (AHCAL) prototype of 5.3 nuclear interaction lengths thickness has been constructed by members of the CALICE Collaboration. The AHCAL prototype consists of a 38-layer sandwich structure of steel plates and highly-segmented scintillator tiles that are read out by wavelength-shifting fibers coupled to SiPMs. The signal is amplified and shaped with a custom-designed ASIC. A calibration/monitoring system based on LED light was developed to monitor the SiPM gain and to measure the full SiPM response curve in order to correct for non-linearity. Ultimately, the physics goals are the study of hadron shower shapes and testing the concept of particle flow. The technical goal consists of measuring the performance and reliability of 7608 SiPMs. The AHCAL was commissioned in test beams at DESY and CERN. The entire prototype was completed in 2007 and recorded hadron showers, electron showers and muons at different energies and incident angles in test beams at CERN and Fermilab.

Persistence in Advection of Passive Scalar

We consider the persistence phenomenon in advectecd passive scalar equation in 1-dimension. The velocity field is random with the $ \sim |k|^{-(2+α)}$. In presence of the non-linearity the complete Green's function becomes $G^{-1}=-iω+Dk^2+Σ$. We determine $Σ$ self-consistently from the correlation function which gives $Σ\sim k^β$, with $β=(1-α)/2$. The effect of the non-linear term in the equation in the $\mathcal{O}(ε^2)$ is to replace the diffusion term due to molecular viscosity by an effective term of the form $Σ_0 k^β$. The stationary correlator for this system is $[\mathrm{Sech}(T/2)]^{1/β}$. Using the self-consistent theory we have determined the relation between $β$ and $α$. Finally, IIA is used to determine the persistent exponent.

Design and Electronics Commissioning of the Physics Prototype of a Si-W Electromagnetic Calorimeter for the International Linear Collider

The CALICE collaboration is studying the design of high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters for future International Linear Collider detectors. For the electromagnetic calorimeter, the current baseline choice is a high granularity sampling calorimeter with tungsten as absorber and silicon detectors as sensitive material. A ``physics prototype'' has been constructed, consisting of thirty sensitive layers. Each layer has an active area of 18x18 cm2 and a pad size of 1x1 cm2. The absorber thickness totals 24 radiation lengths. It has been exposed in 2006 and 2007 to electron and hadron beams at the DESY and CERN beam test facilities, using a wide range of beam energies and incidence angles. In this paper, the prototype and the data acquisition chain are described and a summary of the data taken in the 2006 beam tests is presented. The methods used to subtract the pedestals and calibrate the detector are detailed. The signal-over-noise ratio has been measured at 7.63 +/- 0.01. Some electronics features have been observed; these lead to coherent noise and crosstalk between pads, and also crosstalk between sensitive and passive areas. The performance achieved in terms of uniformity and stability is presented.

Persistence in Random Walk in Composite Media

We consider a class of inhomogeneous media known as composite media that is often encountered in experimental sciences and investigate the persistence probability of a random walker in such a system. Analytical and numerical results for the crossover time scales has been obtained for a composite system with two homogeneous components and three homogeneous components respectively.

Global Persistence Exponent in Critical Dynamics: Finite Size induced Crossover

We extend the definition of a global order parameter to the case of a critical system confined between two infinite parallel plates separated by a finite distance $L$. For a quench to the critical point we study the persistence property of the global order parameter and show that there is a crossover behaviour characterized by a non universal exponent which depends on the ratio of the system size to a dynamic length scale.

Finite Size Effect in Persistence

We have investigated the random walk problem in a finite system and studied the crossover induced in the the persistence probability scales by the system size.Analytical and numerical work show that the scaling function is an exponentially decaying function. The particle here is trapped with in a box of size $L$ . We have also considered the problem when the particle in trapped in a potential. Direct calculation and numerical result show that the scaling function here also an exponentially decaying function. We also present numerical works on harmonically trapped randomly accelerated particle and randomly accelerated particle with viscous drag.

LCDG4 and DigiSim - Simulation activities at NICADD/NIU

We present two software packages developed to support detector R&D studies for the International Linear Collider. LCDG4 is a full-detector simulator that provides energy deposits from particles traversing the sensitive volumes of the detector. It has been extensively used within the American ILC community, providing data for algorithm development and detector optimization studies. DigiSim models real-life digitization effects, converting the idealized response into simulated detector readout. It has many useful features to improve the realism in modeling detector response. The main characteristics of these two complementary packages are discussed.

Review of Top Quark Physics

We present an overview of Top Quark Physics - from what has been learned so far at the Tevatron, to the searches that lie ahead at present and future colliders. We summarize the richness of the measurements and discuss their possible impact on our understanding of the Standard Model by pointing out their key elements and limitations. When possible, we discuss how the top quark may provide a connection to new or unexpected physics.
