Moment of inertia, quadrupole moment, Love number of neutron star and their relations with strange matter equations of state

We investigate the impact of strange matter equations of state involving $Λ$ hyperons, Bose-Einstein condensate of $K^-$ mesons and first order hadron-quark phase transition on moment of inertia, quadrupole moment and tidal deformability parameter of slowly rotating neutron stars. All these equations of state are compatible with the 2 M$_{solar}$ constraint. The main findings of this investigation are the universality of the I-Q and I-Love number relations, which are preserved by the EoSs including $Λ$ hyperons and antikaon condensates, but broken in presence of a first order hadron-quark phase transition. Furthermore, it is also noted that the quadrupole moment approaches the Kerr value of a black hole for maximum mass neutron stars.

Illuminating Gravitational Waves: A Concordant Picture of Photons from a Neutron Star Merger

Merging neutron stars offer an exquisite laboratory for simultaneously studying strong-field gravity and matter in extreme environments. We establish the physical association of an electromagnetic counterpart EM170817 to gravitational waves (GW170817) detected from merging neutron stars. By synthesizing a panchromatic dataset, we demonstrate that merging neutron stars are a long-sought production site forging heavy elements by r-process nucleosynthesis. The weak gamma-rays seen in EM170817 are dissimilar to classical short gamma-ray bursts with ultra-relativistic jets. Instead, we suggest that breakout of a wide-angle, mildly-relativistic cocoon engulfing the jet elegantly explains the low-luminosity gamma-rays, the high-luminosity ultraviolet-optical-infrared and the delayed radio/X-ray emission. We posit that all merging neutron stars may lead to a wide-angle cocoon breakout; sometimes accompanied by a successful jet and sometimes a choked jet.

EoS constraints from nuclear masses and radii in a meta-modeling approach

The question of correlations among empirical equation of state (EoS) parameters constrained by nuclear observables is addressed in a fully empirical meta-modeling approach. A recently proposed meta-modeling for the nuclear EoS in nuclear matter, is augmented with a single finite size term to produce a minimal unified EoS functional able to describe the smooth part of the nuclear ground state properties. This meta-model can reproduce the predictions of a large variety of models, and interpolate continuously between them. The parameter space is sampled and filtered through the constraint of nuclear mass reproduction. We show that this simple analytical meta-modeling has a predictive power on masses, radii, and skins comparable to full HF or ETF calculations with realistic energy functionals. The covariance analysis on the posterior distribution shows that no physical correlation is present between the different EoS parameters. Concerning nuclear observables, a strong correlation between the slope of the symmetry energy and the neutron skin is observed, in agreement with previous studies.

Nonlinear Landau damping of wave envelopes in a quantum plasma

The nonlinear theory of Landau damping of electrostatic wave envelopes (WEs) is revisited in a quantum electron-positron (EP) pair plasma. Starting from a Wigner-Moyal equation coupled to the Poisson equation and applying the multiple scale technique, we derive a nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation which governs the evolution of electrostatic WEs. It is shown that the coefficients of the NLS equation, including the nonlocal nonlinear term, which appears due to the resonant particles having group velocity of the WEs, are significantly modified by the particle dispersion. The effects of the quantum parameter $H$ (the ratio of the plasmon energy to the thermal energy densities), associated with the particle dispersion, are examined on the Landau damping rate of carrier waves, as well as on the modulational instability of WEs. It is found that the Landau damping rate and the decay rate of the solitary wave amplitude are greatly reduced compared to their classical values $(H=0)$.

On the maximum mass of magnetised white dwarfs

We develop a detailed and self-consistent numerical model for extremely-magnetised white dwarfs, which have been proposed as progenitors of overluminous Type Ia supernovae. This model can describe fully-consistent equilibria of magnetic stars in axial symmetry, with rotation, general-relativistic effects and realistic equations of state (including electron-ion interactions and taking into account Landau quantisation of electrons due to the magnetic field). We study the influence of each of these ingredients onto the white dwarf structure and, in particular, on their maximum mass. We perform an extensive stability analysis of such objects, with their highest surface magnetic fields reaching $\sim 10^{13}~G$ (at which point the star adopts a torus-like shape). We confirm previous speculations that although very massive strongly magnetised white dwarfs could potentially exist, the onset of electron captures and pycnonuclear reactions may severely limit their stability. Finally, the emission of gravitational waves by these objects is addressed, showing no possibility of detection by the currently planned space-based detector eLISA.

Spectral and Temporal Properties of MAXI J1836-194 during 2011 Outburst

We study black hole candidate (BHC) MAXI~J1836-194 during its 2011 outburst with Two Component Advective Flow (TCAF) model using RXTE/PCU2 data in $2.5-25$~keV band. From spectral fit, accretion flow parameters such as Keplerian disk rate ($\dot{m_d}$), sub-Keplerian halo rate ($\dot{m_h}$), shock location ($X_{s}$) and compression ratio (R) are extracted directly. During the entire phase of the outburst, quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are observed sporadically. From the nature of the variation of accretion rate ratio (ARR=$\dot{m_h}$ / $\dot{m_d}$) and QPOs, entire period of the outburst is classified in two spectral states, such as, hard (HS), hard-intermediate (HIMS). Unlike other transient BHCs, no signature of soft (SS) and soft-intermediate (SIMS) spectral states are observed during entire phase of the outburst

Characterization of few transient black hole candidates during their X-ray outbursts with TCAF Solution

The theoretical concept of Chakrabarti-Titarchuk two Component Advective Flow (TCAF) model was introduced around two decade ago in mid-90s. Recently after the inclusion of TCAF model into XSPEC as an additive table model, we find that it is quite capable to fit spectra from different phases of few transient black hole candidates (TBHCs) during their outbursts. This quite agrees with our theoretical understanding. Here, a brief summary of our recent studies of spectral and temporal properties of few TBHCs during their X-ray outbursts with TCAF will be discussed.

Nonlinear Landau damping and modulation of electrostatic waves in a nonextensive electron-positron-pair plasma

The nonlinear theory of amplitude modulation of electrostatic wave envelopes in a collisionless electron-positron (EP) pair plasma is studied by using a set of Vlasov-Poisson equations in the context of Tsallis' $q$-nonextensive statistics. In particular, the previous linear theory of Langmuir oscillations in EP plasmas [Phys. Rev. E {\bf87}, 053112 (2013)] is rectified and modified. Applying the multiple scale technique (MST), it is shown that the evolution of electrostatic wave envelopes is governed by a nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation with a nonlocal nonlinear term $\propto {\cal{P}}\int|ϕ(ξ',τ)|^2dξ'ϕ/(ξ-ξ') $ [where ${\cal P}$ denotes the Cauchy principal value, $ϕ$ is the small-amplitude electrostatic (complex) potential, and $ξ$ and $τ$ are the stretched coordinates in MST] which appears due to the wave-particle resonance. It is found that a subregion $1/3<q\lesssim3/5$ of superextensivity $(q<1)$ exists where the carrier wave frequency can turn over with the group velocity going to zero and then to negative values. The effects of the nonlocal nonlinear term and the nonextensive parameter $q$ are examined on the modulational instability (MI) of wave envelopes as well as on the solitary wave solution of the NLS equation. It is found that the modulated wave packet is always unstable (nonlinear Landau damping) due to the nonlocal nonlinearity in the NLS equation. Furthermore, the effect of the nonlinear Landau damping is to slow down the amplitude of the wave envelope, and the corresponding decay rate can be faster the larger is the number of superthermal particles in pair plasmas.

Implications for compact stars of a soft nuclear equation of state from heavy-ion data

We study the implications on compact star properties of a soft nuclear equation of state determined from kaon production at subthreshold energies in heavy-ion collisions. On one hand, we apply these results to study radii and moments of inertia of light neutron stars. Heavy-ion data provides constraints on nuclear matter at densities relevant for those stars and, in particular, to the density dependence of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter. On the other hand, we derive a limit for the highest allowed neutron star mass of three solar masses. For that purpose, we use the information on the nucleon potential obtained from the analysis of the heavy-ion data combined with causality on the nuclear equation of state.

Is there still a strong CP problem?

The role of a chiral U(1) phase in the quark mass in QCD is analysed from first principles. In operator formulation, there is a parity symmetry and the phase can be removed by a change in the representation of the Dirac gamma matrices. Moreover, these properties are also realized in a Pauli-Villars regularized version of the theory. In the functional integral scenario, attempts to remove the chiral phase by a chiral transformation are thought to be obstructed by a nontrivial Jacobian arising from the fermion measure and the chiral phase may therefore seem to break parity. But if one starts from the regularized action with the chiral phase also present in the regulator mass term, the Jacobian for a combined chiral rotation of quarks and regulators is seen to be trivial and the phase can be removed by a combined chiral rotation. This amounts to a taming of the strong CP problem.
