Local generation of entanglement with Redfield dynamics

In phenomenological applications, time evolutions of Bloch-Redfield type are widely adopted for modelling open system dynamics, despite their non-positive preserving character: this physical inconsistency, that in general shows up at small times, is usually cured by suitably restricting the space of allowed initial states. Nevertheless, additional problems may arise in relation to entanglement: specifically, we show that Redfield dynamics can generate entanglement through a purely local action, and this unphysical effect can persist for finite times.

Random generators of Markovian evolution: A quantum-classical transition by superdecoherence

Continuous-time Markovian evolution appears to be manifestly different in classical and quantum worlds. We consider ensembles of random generators of $N$-dimensional Markovian evolution, quantum and classical ones, and evaluate their universal spectral properties. We then show how the two types of generators can be related by superdecoherence. In analogy with the mechanism of decoherence, which transforms a quantum state into a classical one, superdecoherence can be used to transform a Lindblad operator (generator of quantum evolution) into a Kolmogorov operator (generator of classical evolution). We inspect spectra of random Lindblad operators undergoing superdecoherence and demonstrate that, in the limit of complete superdecoherence, the resulting operators exhibit spectral density typical to random Kolmogorov operators. By gradually increasing strength of superdecoherence, we observe a sharp quantum-to-classical transition. Furthermore, we define an inverse procedure of supercoherification that is a generalization of the scheme used to construct a quantum state out of a classical one. Finally, we study microscopic correlation between neighbouring eigenvalues through the complex spacing ratios and observe the horse-shoe distribution, emblematic of the Ginibre universality class, for both types of random generators. Remarkably, it survives superdecoherence and supercoherification.

Detecting Entanglement can be More Effective with Inequivalent Mutually Unbiased Bases

Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) provide a standard tool in the verification of quantum states, especially when harnessing a complete set for optimal quantum state tomography. In this work, we investigate the detection of entanglement via inequivalent sets of MUBs, with a particular focus on unextendible MUBs. These are bases for which an additional unbiased basis cannot be constructed and, consequently, are unsuitable for quantum state verification. Here, we show that unextendible MUBs, as well as other inequivalent sets in higher dimensions, can be more effective in the verification of entanglement. Furthermore, we provide an efficient and systematic method to search for inequivalent MUBs and show that such sets occur regularly within the Heisenberg-Weyl MUBs, as the dimension increases. Our findings are particularly useful for experimentalists since adding optimal MUBs to an experimental setup enables a step-by-step approach to detect a larger class of entangled states.

Probability representation of quantum dynamics using pseudostochastic maps

In this work, we consider a probability representation of quantum dynamics for finite-dimensional quantum systems with the use of pseudostochastic maps acting on true probability distributions. These probability distributions are obtained via symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measure (SIC-POVM) and can be directly accessible in an experiment. We provide SIC-POVM probability representations both for unitary evolution of the density matrix governed by the von Neumann equation and dissipative evolution governed by Markovian master equation. In particular, we discuss whereas the quantum dynamics can be simulated via classical random processes in terms of the conditions for the master equation generator in the SIC-POVM probability representation. We construct practical measures of nonclassicality non-Markovianity of quantum processes and apply them for studying experimental realization of quantum circuits realized with the IBM cloud quantum processor.

Comparative study of non-Markovianity measures in exactly solvable one and two qubit models

In this paper we present a detailed critical study of several recently proposed non-Markovianity measures. We analyse their properties for single qubit and two-qubit systems in both pure-dephasing and dissipative scenarios. More specifically we investigate and compare their computability, their physical meaning, their Markovian to non-Markovian crossover, and their additivity properties with respect to the number of qubits. The bottom-up approach that we pursue is aimed at identifying similarities and differences in the behavior of non-Markovianity indicators in several paradigmatic open system models. This in turn allows us to infer the leading traits of the variegated phenomenon known as non-Markovian dynamics and, possibly, to grasp its physical essence.

Markovian semigroup from non-Markovian evolutions

It is shown that a convex combination of two non-Markovian evolutions may lead to Markovian semigroup. This shows that convex combination of quantum evolutions displaying nontrivial memory effects may result in a perfectly memoryless evolution.

On pseudo-stochastic matrices and pseudo-positive maps

Stochastic matrices and positive maps in matrix algebras proved to be very important tools for analysing classical and quantum systems. In particular they represent a natural set of transformations for classical and quantum states, respectively. Here we introduce the notion of pseudo-stochastic matrices and consider their semigroup property. Unlike stochastic matrices, pseudo-stochastic matrices are permitted to have matrix elements which are negative while respecting the requirement that the sum of the elements of each column is one. They also allow for convex combinations, and carry a Lie group structure which permits the introduction of Lie algebra generators. The quantum analog of a pseudo-stochastic matrix exists and is called a pseudo-positive map. They have the property of transforming a subset of quantum states (characterized by maximal purity or minimal von Neumann entropy requirements) into quantum states. Examples of qubit dynamics connected with "diamond" sets of stochastic matrices and pseudo-positive maps are dealt with.

Local numerical range for a class of $2\otimes d$ hermitian operators

A local numerical range is analyzed for a family of circulant observables and states of composite $2 \otimes d$ systems. It is shown that for any $2\otimes d$ circulant operator $\cal O$ there exists a basis giving rise to the matrix representation with real non-negative off-diagonal elements. In this basis the problem of finding extremum of $\cal O$ on product vectors $\ket{x}\otimes \ket{y} \in \mathbb{C}^2\otimes \mathbb{C}^d$ reduces to the corresponding problem in $\mathbb{R}^2\otimes \mathbb{R}^d$. The final analytical result for $d=2$ is presented.

Entanglement witnesses for $d \otimes d$ systems and new classes of entangled qudit states

We provide a new class of entanglement witnesses for $d \ot d$ systems (two qudits). Our construction generalizes the one proposed recently by Jafarizadeh et al. for $d=3$ and $d=4$ on the basis of semidefinite linear programming. Moreover, we provide a new class of PPT entangled states detected by our witnesses which generalizes well known family of states constructed by Horodecki et al. for $d=3$.

Stochastic evolution of finite level systems: classical vs. quantum

Quantum dynamics of the density operator in the framework of a single probability vector is analyzed. In this framework quantum states define a proper convex quantum subset in an appropriate simplex. It is showed that the corresponding dynamical map preserving a quantum subset needs not be stochastic contrary to the classical evolution which preserves the entire simplex. Therefore, violation of stochasticity witnesses quantumness of evolution.

On classical and quantum liftings

We analyze the procedure of lifting in classical stochastic and quantum systems. It enables one to `lift' a state of a system into a state of `system+reservoir'. This procedure is important both in quantum information theory and the theory of open systems. We illustrate the general theory of liftings by a particular class related to so called circulant states.
