Electric field effect on BiFeO$_3$ single crystal investigated by Raman spectroscopy

Micro-Raman spectroscopy has been used to study lattice dynamics associated with the ferroelectric domains of a BiFeO$_3$ single crystal at low temperature. The phonon assignment shows a large frequency splitting between the transverse and longitudinal components of the A$_1$ phonon mode related to the Bi-O bonds in contrast with thin films where the splitting is negligible. Applying an external electric field induces frequency shifts of the low energy modes related to the Bi-O bonds. These softenings are due to a tensile stress via the piezoelectric effect. We give estimates of the phonon deformation potentials.

Investigations on the relationship between $T_c$ and the superconducting gap under magnetic and non-magnetic impurity substitutions in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$

We report electronic Raman scattering measurements on optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7 where Zn or Ni impurities have been substituted by Cu. Using Raman selection rules, we have probed the superconducting gap in the nodal and antinodal regions. We show that under impurity substitutions, the energy of the antinodal peak detected in the superconducting state is not related to the critical temperature Tc and that signatures of superconductivity disappear in the nodal regions. Our experimental findings advocate in favor of gapless arcs around the nodes. The breakdown of the relationship between the antinodal gap amplitude and Tc is discussed in terms of local superconducting gap and pseudogap.

Infrared phonon dynamics of multiferroic BiFeO3 single crystal

We discuss the first infrared reflectivity measurement on a BiFeO3 single crystal between 5 K and room temperature. The 9 predicted ab-plane E phonon modes are fully and unambiguously determined. The frequencies of the 4 A1 c-axis phonons are found. These results settle issues between theory and data on ceramics. Our findings show that the softening of the lowest frequency E mode is responsible for the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant, indicating that the ferroelectric transition in BiFeO3 is soft-mode driven.

Evolution of the gaps through the cuprate phase-diagram

The actual physical origin of the gap at the antinodes, and a clear identification of the superconducting gap are fundamental open issues in the physics of high-$T_c$ superconductors. Here, we present a systematic electronic Raman scattering study of a mercury-based single layer cuprate, as a function of both doping level and temperature. On the deeply overdoped side, we show that the antinodal gap is a true superconducting gap. In contrast, on the underdoped side, our results reveal the existence of a break point close to optimal doping below which the antinodal gap is gradually disconnected from superconductivity. The nature of both the superconducting and normal state is distinctly different on each side of this breakpoint.

Very large spontaneous electric polarization in BiFeO3 single crystals at room temperature and its evolution under cycling fields

Electric polarization loops are measured at room temperature on highly pure BiFeO3 single crystals synthesized by a flux growth method. Because the crystals have a high electrical resistivity, the resulting low leakage currents allow us to measure a large spontaneous polarization reaching 100 microC.cm^{-2}, a value never reported in the bulk. During electric cycling, the slow degradation of the material leads to an evolution of the hysteresis curves eventually preventing full saturation of the crystals.

Total suppression of superconductivity by high magnetic fields in YBa2 Cu3O6.6

We have studied in fields up to 60T the variation of the transverse magnetoresistance (MR) of underdoped YBCO6.6 crystals either pure or with Tc reduced down to 3.5K by electron irradiation. We evidence that the normal state MR is restored above a threshold field H'c(T), which is found to vanish at T'c>>Tc. In the pure YBCO6.6 sample a 50 Tesla field is already required to completely suppress the superconducting fluctuations at Tc. While disorder does not depress the pseudogap temperature, it reduces drastically the phase coherence established at Tc and weakly H'c(0), T'c and the onset Tnu of the Nernst signal which are more characteristic of the 2D local pairing.

Coupling between quasiparticles and a bosonic mode in the normal state of HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$

We report a doping dependent study of the quasiparticles dynamics in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ via Electronic Raman Scattering. A well-defined energy scale is found in the normal state dynamics of the quasiparticles over a broad doping range. It is interpreted as evidence for coupling between the quasiparticles and a collective bosonic mode whose energy scale depend only weakly with doping. We contrast this behavior with that of the superconducting gap whose amplitude near the node continuously decreases towards the underdoped regime. We discuss the implications of our findings on the nature of the collective mode and argue that electron-phonon coupling is the most natural explanation.

Two Energy Scales and two Quasiparticle Dynamics in the Superconducting State of Underdoped Cuprates

The superconducting state of underdoped cuprates is often described in terms of a single energy-scale, associated with the maximum of the (d-wave) gap. Here, we report on electronic Raman scattering results, which show that the gap function in the underdoped regime is characterized by two energy scales, depending on doping in opposite manners. Their ratios to the maximum critical temperature are found to be universal in cuprates. Our experimental results also reveal two different quasiparticle dynamics in the underdoped superconducting state, associated with two regions of momentum space: nodal regions near the zeros of the superconducting gap and antinodal regions. While antinodal quasiparticles quickly loose coherence as doping is reduced, coherent nodal quasiparticles persist down to low doping levels. A theoretical analysis using a new sum-rule allows us to relate the low-frequency-dependence of the Raman response to the temperature-dependence of the superfluid density, both controlled by nodal excitations.

Nernst effect and disorder in the normal state of high-T_{c} cuprates

We have studied the influence of disorder induced by electron irradiation on the Nernst effect in optimally and underdoped YBa2Cu3O(7-d) single crystals. The fluctuation regime above T_{c} expands significantly with disorder, indicating that the T_{c} decrease is partly due to the induced loss of phase coherence. In pure crystals the temperature extension of the Nernst signal is found to be narrow whatever the hole doping, contrary to data reported in the low-T_{c} cuprates families. Our results show that the presence of "intrinsic" disorder can explain the enhanced range of Nernst signal found in the pseudogap phase of the latter compounds.

ESR study of the single-ion anisotropy in the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd2Sn2O7

Single-ion anisotropy is of importance for the magnetic ordering of the frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnets Gd2Ti2O7 and Gd2Sn2O7. The anisotropy parameters for the Gd2Sn2O7 were measured using the electron spin resonance (ESR) technique. The anisotropy was found to be of the easy plane type, with the main constant D=140mK. This value is 35% smaller than the value of the corresponding anisotropy constant in the related compound Gd2Ti2O7.

Effects of Magnetic and non-Magnetic Impurities on the Superconducting State of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$

We report Electronic Raman Scattering measurements on optimally doped Zn and Ni substituted YBCO in A$_{1g}$ and B$_{1g}$ channels. We show that the superconducting gap energy is independant of magnetic Ni and non-magnetic Zn substitutions. On the contrary the collective A$_{1g}$ mode follows the critical temperature $T_c$ with two distinct slopes for Ni and Zn, and tracks the magnetic resonance seen in inelastic neutron scattering. We explain the unconventionnal energy dependence of the superconducting gap and discuss the behaviour of the A$_{1g}$ mode within magnetic and non-magnetic impurities.

Influence of parasitic phases on the properties of BiFeO3 epitaxial thin films

We have explored the influence of deposition pressure and temperature on the growth of BiFeO3 thin films by pulsed laser deposition onto (001)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates. Single-phase BiFeO3 films are obtained in a region close to 10-2 mbar and 580C. In non-optimal conditions, X-ray diffraction reveals the presence of Fe oxides or of Bi2O3. We address the influence of these parasitic phases on the magnetic and electrical properties of the films and show that films with Fe2O3 systematically exhibit a ferromagnetic behaviour, while single-phase films have a low bulk-like magnetic moment. Conductive-tip atomic force microscopy mappings also indicate that Bi2O3 conductive outgrowths create shortcuts through the BiFeO3 films, thus preventing their practical use as ferroelectric elements in functional heterostructures.

Magnetic order and spin fluctuations in the spin liquid Tb$\_2$Sn$\_2$O$\_7$

We have studied the spin liquid Tb$\_2$Sn$\_2$O$\_7$ by neutron diffraction and specific heat measurements. Below about 2 K, the magnetic correlations change from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic. Magnetic order settles in two steps, with a smeared transition at 1.3(1) K then an abrupt transition at 0.87(2) K. A new magnetic structure is observed, not predicted by current models, with both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic character. It suggests that the spin liquid degeneracy is lifted by dipolar interactions combined with a finite anisotropy along $<111>$ axes. In the ground state, the Tb$^{3+}$ ordered moment is reduced with respect to the free ion moment (9 $μ\_{\rm B}$). The moment value of 3.3(3) $μ\_{\rm B}$ deduced from the specific heat is much smaller than derived from neutron diffraction of 5.9(1) $μ\_{\rm B}$. This difference is interpreted by the persistence of slow collective magnetic fluctuations down to the lowest temperatures.

Two Distinct Electronic Contributions in the Fully Symmetric Raman Response of High $T_{c}$ Cuprates

We show by non resonant effect in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg-1201)and by Zn substitutions in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (Y-123) compounds that the fully symmetric Raman spectrum has two distinct electronic contributions. The A$_{1g}$ response consists in the superconducting pair breaking peak at the 2$Δ$ energy and a collective mode close to the magnetic resonance energy. These experimental results reconcile the \textit{d-wave} model to the A$_{1g}$ Raman response function in so far as a collective mode that is distinct from the pair breaking peak is present in the A$_{1g}$ channel.

Interplay between the pseudogap and superconductivity in HgBa$_2$CuO$_4$ single crystals

We report a doping dependant Electronic Raman Scattering (ERS) study of HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg-1201) single crystals. We investigate the dynamics of the antinodal and nodal quasiparticles. We show that the dynamical response of the antinodal quasiparticles is strongly reduced towards the underdoped regime in both the normal and superconducting states. When probing the nodal quasiparticles, we are able to distinguish between the energy scale of the pseudogap and that of the superconducting gap. A simple model relating the suppression of the dynamical response of the antinodal quasiparticles to fluctuations related to a competing phase is proposed.

Series of Bulk Magnetic Phase Transitions in NaxCoO2: a muSR study

Using muon spin rotation, well-defined bulk ~ 100% magnetic phases in NaxCoO2 are revealed. A novel magnetic phase is detected for x = 0.85 with the highest transition temperature ever observed for x >= 0.75. This stresses the diversity of x >=0.75 magnetic phases and the link between magnetic and structural degrees of freedom. For the charge-ordered x = 0.50 compound, a cascade of transitions is observed below 85 K. From a detailed analysis of our data, we conclude that the ordered moment varies continuously with temperature and suggest that the two secondary transitions at 48 K and 29 K correspond to a moderate reorientation of antiferromagnetically coupled moments.

Resonant Raman scattering in mercurate single crystals

We report resonant electronic Raman scattering in optimally doped single layer HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg-1201) and trilayer HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+δ}$ (Hg-1223) single crystals. Analysis of the $B_{1g}$ and B$_{2g}$ channels in the superconducting state of Hg-1201 advocates for a gap having d-wave symmetry. In addition a resonant study $B_{1g}$ pair-breaking peak and the $A_{1g}$ peak suggests that the $A_{1g}$ peak is not directly related to the d-wave superconducting gap amplitude. Comparison with trilayer Hg-1223 demonstrates the universal behavior of this two energy scales in optimally doped cuprates.

Determination and Control of Oxygen Stoichiometry in the Cuprate Bi2sr2cuo6+D

The relatively low Tc of Bi2Sr2CuO6+D allows to study normal-state down to low temperatures and the non-substituted compound is intrinsically strongly overdoped. Hole concentration can be adjusted trough oxygen excess, but few data exist in the literature about the quantitative control of D. The synthesis, achieved in air by solid-state reaction, needs long-time annealing to obtain pure phase with stoichiometric cationic ratios. Thermogravimetric techniques were used to explore oxygen non-stoichiometry. Absolute oxygen content was determined by reduction with hydrogen, while the oxygen exchange was studied between 300 C and 670 C with different PO2. Oxygen excess varies between 0.14 and 0.18, with possibly two regimes of oxygen intercalation. These results are compared to Bi-2212.
