Assessing the ultracentral flow puzzle in hydrodynamic modeling of heavy-ion collisions

An outstanding problem in heavy-ion collisions is the inability for models to accurately describe ultra-central experimental flow data, despite that being precisely the regime where a hydrodynamic description should be most applicable. We reassess the status of this puzzle by computing the flow in ultra-central collisions obtained from multiple recent Bayesian models that were tuned to various observables in different collision systems at typical centralities. While central data can now be described with better accuracy than in previous calculations, tension with experimental observation remains and worsens as one goes to ultra-central collisions. Tuning the model parameters cannot remove this tension without destroying the fit at other centralities. As such, new elements are likely needed in the standard modeling of heavy-ion collisions.

QCD Challenges from pp to A-A Collisions

This paper is a write-up of the ideas that were presented, developed and discussed at the third International Workshop on QCD Challenges from pp to A-A, which took place in August 2019 in Lund, Sweden. The goal of the workshop was to focus on some of the open questions in the field and try to come up with concrete suggestions for how to make progress on both the experimental and theoretical sides. The paper gives a brief introduction to each topic and then summarizes the primary results.

A next-generation LHC heavy-ion experiment

The present document discusses plans for a compact, next-generation multi-purpose detector at the LHC as a follow-up to the present ALICE experiment. The aim is to build a nearly massless barrel detector consisting of truly cylindrical layers based on curved wafer-scale ultra-thin silicon sensors with MAPS technology, featuring an unprecedented low material budget of 0.05% X$_0$ per layer, with the innermost layers possibly positioned inside the beam pipe. In addition to superior tracking and vertexing capabilities over a wide momentum range down to a few tens of MeV/$c$, the detector will provide particle identification via time-of-flight determination with about 20~ps resolution. In addition, electron and photon identification will be performed in a separate shower detector. The proposed detector is conceived for studies of pp, pA and AA collisions at luminosities a factor of 20 to 50 times higher than possible with the upgraded ALICE detector, enabling a rich physics program ranging from measurements with electromagnetic probes at ultra-low transverse momenta to precision physics in the charm and beauty sector.

Color reconnection effects on resonance production

We present studies that show how multi-parton interaction and color reconnection affect the hadro-chemistry in proton-proton (pp) collisions with special focus on the production of resonances using the PYTHIA8 event generator. We find that color reconnection suppresses the relative production of meson resonances such as $ρ_{0}$ and K*, providing an alternative explanation for the K*/K decrease observed in proton-proton collisions as a function of multiplicity by the ALICE collaboration. Detailed studies of the underlying mechanism causing meson resonance suppression indicate that color reconnection leads to shorter, less energetic strings whose fragmentation is less likely to produce more massive hadrons for a given quark content, therefore reducing ratios such as K*/K and $ρ_0/π$ in high-multiplicity pp collisions. In addition, we have also studied the effects of allowing string junctions to form and found that these may also contribute to resonance suppression.

A Very High Momentum Particle Identification Detector

The construction of a new detector is proposed to extend the capabilities of ALICE in the high transverse momentum (pT) region. This Very High Momentum Particle Identification Detector (VHMPID) performs charged hadron identification on a track-by-track basis in the 5 GeV/c < p < 25 GeV/c momentum range and provides ALICE with new opportunities to study parton-medium interactions at LHC energies. The VHMPID covers up to 30% of the ALICE central barrel and presents sufficient acceptance for triggered- and tagged-jet studies, allowing for the first time identified charged hadron measurements in jets. This Letter of Intent summarizes the physics motivations for such a detector as well as its layout and integration into ALICE.

Strange and Multi-Strange Particle Production in ALICE

The production of strange and multi-strange hadrons in proton-proton (pp) and lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions is studied with the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC. These particles are reconstructed via their weak decay topologies, exploiting the tracking and particle identification capabilities of ALICE. Measurements of central rapidity yields of $Λ$, $Ξ^{-}$ and $Ω^{-}$ baryons, their antiparticles and ${\mathrm K}^{0}_{S}$ mesons are presented as a function of transverse momentum for Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV. They are compared to those observed in pp collisions as well as to results from lower energy nucleus-nucleus measurements.

Multi-strange particle measurements in 7 TeV proton-proton and 2.76 TeV PbPb collisions with the ALICE experiment at the LHC

The production of charged multi-strange particles is studied with the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC. Measurements of the central rapidity yields of $Ξ^-$ and $Ω^-$ baryons, as well as their antiparticles, are presented as a function of transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{t}$) for inelastic pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV and compared to existing measurements performed at the same and/or at lower energies. The results are also compared to predictions from two different tunes of the PYTHIA event generator. We find that data significantly exceed the production rates from those models. Finally, we present the status of the multi-strange particle production studies in Pb-Pb at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV performed as a function of collision centrality.

A Non-extensive Equilibrium analysis of $π^{+}$ $p_{T}$ Spectra at RHIC

By analyzing the dynamical properties of particle production in relativistic heavy ion collisions, it is possible to characterize the final stage of the equilibration process occurring in the collision fireball. In this work, we use the Hagedorn model coupled with non-extensive statistics to evaluate the transverse momentum spectra of positive pions for various event centrality classes in Au+Au collisions at RHIC with center-of-mass energies of 62.4GeV/A and 200GeV/A. We find that, by assuming an energy distribution that incorporates particle correlations, it is possible to explain the entire $π^{+}$ $p_{T}$ spectrum as measured by RHIC. We find that spectra from central collisions, when compared to peripheral collisions, are consistent with a system that has smaller values of the non-extensivity parameter "q" and higher values of temperature. Comparison between different beam energies also shows a variation of the "q" parameter. The result is discussed using the interpretation that the "q" parameter is a measure of particle correlations within the system. Under this assumption, our results show that more central collisions are consistent with a system with less particle correlations.
