Field-dependent diamagnetic transition in magnetic superconductor $Sm_{1.85} Ce_{0.15} Cu O_{4-y}$

The magnetic penetration depth of single crystal $\rm{Sm_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-y}}$ was measured down to 0.4 K in dc fields up to 7 kOe. For insulating $\rm{Sm_2CuO_4}$, Sm$^{3+}$ spins order at the Néel temperature, $T_N = 6$ K, independent of the applied field. Superconducting $\rm{Sm_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-y}}$ ($T_c \approx 23$ K) shows a sharp increase in diamagnetic screening below $T^{\ast}(H)$ which varied from 4.0 K ($H = 0$) to 0.5 K ($H =$ 7 kOe) for a field along the c-axis. If the field was aligned parallel to the conducting planes, $T^{\ast}$ remained unchanged. The unusual field dependence of $T^{\ast}$ indicates a spin freezing transition that dramatically increases the superfluid density.

High-Resolution Thermal Expansion of MgB2

The thermal expansion of polycrystalline MgB2 from 5-300 K is studied using high-resolution capacitance dilatometry. The thermal expansivity exhibits a small jump of -5.8x10-8 K-1 at Tc (in accord with expectations from the Ehrenfest relationship and published specific heat and pressure data) and a negative peak-like feature close to 5 K. No indications of any structural instabilities are observed.

Nodal Order Parameter in Electron-Doped Superconducting Films Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-y) (x=0.13, 0.15 and 0.17)

The London penetration depth, lambda{ab}(T), is reported for thin films of the electron-doped superconductor Pr{2-x}Ce{x}CuO{4-y} at three doping levels (x = 0.13, 0.15 and 0.17). Measurements down to 0.35 K were carried out using a tunnel diode oscillator with excitation fields applied both perpendicular and parallel to the conducting planes. For all samples and both field orientations lambda{ab}(T) showed power law behavior implying a superconducting gap with nodes.

Evidence for Two Superconducting Gaps in $MgB_2$

We have measured the Raman spectra of polycrystalline MgB$_{2}$ from 25 {\cm} to 1200 {\cm}. When the temperature was decreased below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, we observed a superconductivity-induced redistribution in the electronic Raman continuum. Two pair-breaking peaks appear in the spectra, suggesting the presence of two superconducting gaps. Furthermore, we have analyzed the measured spectra using a quasi two-dimensional model in which two s-wave superconducting gaps open on two sheets of Fermi surface. For the gap values we have obtained $Δ_1 = 22 cm^{-1}$ (2.7 meV) and $Δ_2 = 50 cm^{-1}$ (6.2 meV). Our results suggest that a conventional phonon-mediated pairing mechanism occurs in the planar boron $σ$ bands and is responsible for the superconductivity of MgB$_{2}$.
