Determination of quadrupole strengths in the gamma*p-->Delta(1232) transition at Q2= 0.20 (GeV/c)2

We report new precise p$(\vec{e},e^\prime p)π^0$ measurements at the peak of the $Δ^{+}(1232)$ resonance at $Q^2=\unit[0.20](GeV/c)^2$ performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI). The new data are sensitive to both the electric quadrupole ($E2$) and the coulomb quadrupole ($C2$) amplitudes of the $γ^* N\toΔ$ transition. They yield precise quadrupole to dipole amplitude ratios CMR $= (-5.09 \pm 0.28_{stat+sys}\pm 0.30_{model})%$ and EMR $= (-1.96 \pm 0.68_{stat+sys} \pm 0.41_{model})%$ for $M^{3/2}_{1+} = (39.57 \pm 0.75_{stat+sys}\pm 0.40_{model})(10^{-3}/m_{π^+})$. The new results are in disagreement with Constituent Quark Model predictions and in qualitative agreement with models that account for mesonic contributions, including recent Lattice calculations. They thus give further credence to the conjecture of deformation in hadronic systems favoring the attribution of the origin of deformation to the dominance of mesonic effects.

Measurement of Rlt and Atl in the 4He(e,e'p)3H Reaction at pmiss of 130-300 MeV/c

We have measured the 4He(e,e'p)3H reaction at missing momenta of 130-300 MeV/c using the three-spectrometer facility at the Mainz microtron MAMI. Data were taken in perpendicular kinematics to allow us to determine the response function Rlt and the asymmetry term Atl. The data are compared to both relativistic and non-relativistic calculations.

Laser Stabilization Controls for the ISAC Beam Polarizer

The ISAC polarized beam facility uses a Ti:Sapphire laser for producing spin-polarized beams of short-lived radioactive isotopes, initially 7Li. The laser power and spectral content must be tightly controlled and monitored. The control system to accomplish this task uses techniques that combine operator interface, data reduction, and closed loop automation. The laser stabilization application uses input data acquired from a spectrum analyzer, in the form of a waveform array repetitively acquired from a GPIB-interfaced oscilloscope. A Labview based operator interface allows the selection of features from within the waveform, which are then used as the basis for closed loop control, in concert with the existing EPICS control system software and related hardware. Part of the challenge stems from using input data which are subject to human interpretation and require distillation into a hard numeric format suitable for use in a control system.

Status Update on the ISAC Control System

Implementation and commissioning of the EPICS based control system for the ISAC radioactive beam facility was completed. The target ion source, mass separator, and low-energy beam-lines started beam production for experiments. In parallel, controls for the accelerator system, a radio-frequency quadrupole followed by a drift-tube linac, and several high-energy beam-lines were implemented and commissioned. The number of controlled devices more than doubled since the last report. An overview of relational database usage, software engineering and quality control methods used will be given.

Far Infrared Spectroscopy of Normal Galaxies: Physical Conditions in the Interstellar Medium

The most important cooling lines of the neutral interstellar medium (ISM) lie in the far-infrared (FIR). We present measurements by the Infrared Space Observatory Long Wavelength Spectrometer of seven lines from neutral and ionized ISM of 60 normal, star-forming galaxies. The galaxy sample spans a range in properties such as morphology, FIR colors (indicating dust temperature), and FIR/Blue ratios (indicating star-formation activity and optical depth). In two-thirds of the galaxies in this sample, the [CII] line is proportional to FIR dust continuum. The other one-third show a smooth decline in [CII]/FIR with increasing F60/F100 and FIR/B, spanning a range of a factor of more than 50. Two galaxies, at the warm and active extreme of the range have [CII]/FIR < 2 \times 10^{-4} (3-sigma upper limit). This is due to increased positive grain charge in the warmer and more active galaxies, which leads to less efficient heating by photoelectrons from dust grains. The ratio of the two principal photodissociation region (PDR) cooling lines [CII]/[OI] shows a tight correlation with F60/F100, indicating that both gas and dust temperatures increase together. We derive a theoretical scaling between [NII] and [CII] from ionized gas and use it to separate [CII] emission from neutral PDRs and ionized gas. Comparison of PDR models of Kaufman et al. (1999) with observed ratios of (a) [OI]/[CII] and ([CII]+[OI])/FIR and (b) [OI]/FIR and F60/F100 yields far-UV flux G0 and gas density n. The derived G0 scales as n to the power 1.4. We interpret this correlation as arising from Stromgren sphere scalings if much of the line and continuum luminosity arises near star-forming regions. The differences in G0 and n may be due to differences in the physical properties of the star-forming clouds.(Short abstract)

The Interstellar Medium of Star-forming Irregular Galaxies: The View with ISO

We present mid-infrared imaging and far-infrared (FIR) spectroscopy of 5 IBm galaxies observed by ISO as part of our larger study of the inter- stellar medium of galaxies. Most of the irregulars in our sample are very actively forming stars. The mid-infrared imaging was in a band centered at 6.75 microns that is dominated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and in a band centered at 15 microns that is dominated by small dust grains. The spectroscopy of 3 of the galaxies includes [CII]158 microns and [OI]63 microns, important coolants of photodissociation regions (PDRs), and [OIII]88 microns and [NII]122 microns, which come from ionized gas. [OI]145 microns and [OIII]52 microns were measured in one galaxy as well. These data are combined with PDR and HII region models to deduce properties of the interstellar medium of these galaxies.

Probing the Interstellar Medium in Early type galaxies with ISO observations

Four IRAS-detected early type galaxies were observed with ISO. With the exception of the 15 micron image of NGC1052, the mid-IR emission from NGC1052, NGC1155, NGC5866 and NGC6958 at 4.5, 7 and 15 microns show extended emission. Mid-IR emission from NGC1052, NGC1155, and NGC6958 follows a de Vaucouleurs profile. The ratio of 15/7 micron flux decreases with radius in these galaxies, approaching the values empirically observed for purely stellar systems. In NGC5866, the 7 and 15 micron emission is concentrated in the edge-on dust lane. All the galaxies are detected in the [CII] line, and the S0s NGC1155 and NGC5866 are detected in the [OI] line as well. The ISO-LWS observations of the [CII] line are more sensitive measures of cool, neutral ISM than HI and CO by about a factor of 10-100. Three of four early type galaxies, namely NGC1052, NGC6958 and NGC5866, have low ratio FIR/Blue and show a lower [CII]/FIR, which is due to a softer radiation field from old stellar populations. The low [CII]/CO ratio in NGC5866 ([CII]/CO(1-0) < 570) confirms this scenario. We estimate the UV radiation expected from the old stellar populations in these galaxies and compare it to that needed to heat the gas to account for the cooling observed [CII] and [OI] lines. In three out of four galaxies, NGC1052, NGC5866 and NGC6958, the predicted UV radiation falls short by a factor of 2-3. In view of the observed intrinsic scatter in the "UV-upturn" in elliptical galaxies and its great sensitivity to age and metallicity effects, this is not significant. However, the much larger difference (about a factor of 20) between the UV radiation from old stars and that needed to produce the FIR lines for NGC 1155 is strong evidence for the presence of young stars, in NGC1155.

High-precision Studies of the $^{\bf{3}}$He(e,e$^{\bf{\prime}}$p) Reaction at the Quasielastic Peak

Precision studies of the reaction $^{3}$He(e,e$^\prime$p) using the three-spectrometer facility at the Mainz microtron MAMI are presented. All data are for quasielastic kinematics at $|\vec{q} | =685$ MeV/c. Absolute cross sections were measured at three electron kinematics. For the measured missing momenta range from 10 to 165 MeV/c, no strength is observed for missing energies higher than 20 MeV. Distorted momentum distributions were extracted for the two-body breakup and the continuum. The longitudinal and transverse behavior was studied by measuring the cross section for three photon polarizations. The longitudinal and transverse nature of the cross sections is well described by a currently accepted and widely used prescription of the off-shell electron-nucleon cross-section. The results are compared to modern three-body calculations and to previous data.

A Measurement of the Interference Structure Function, R_LT, for the 12C(e,e'p) reaction in the Quasielastic Region

The coincidence cross-section and the interference structure function, R_LT, were measured for the 12C(e,e'p) 11B reaction at quasielastic kinematics and central momentum transfer of q=400 MeV/c. The measurement was at an opening angle of theta_pq=11 degrees, covering a range in missing energy of E_m = 0 to 65 MeV. The R_LT structure function is found to be consistent with zero for E_m > 50 MeV, confirming an earlier study which indicated that R_L vanishes in this region. The integrated strengths of the p- and s-shell are compared with a Distorted Wave Impulse Approximation calculation. The s-shell strength and shape are compared with a Hartree Fock-Random Phase Approximation calculation. The DWIA calculation overestimates the cross sections for p- and s-shell proton knockout as expected, but surprisingly agrees with the extracted R_LT value for both shells. The HF-RPA calculation describes the data more consistently, which may be due to the inclusion of 2-body currents in this calculation.

A Comparison of Polarization Observables in Electron Scattering from the Proton and Deuteron

Recoil proton polarization observables were measured for both the p($\vec {\rm e}$,e$^\prime\vec{\rm p}\,$) and d($\vec {\rm e}$,e$^\prime\vec{\rm p}\,)$n reactions at two values of Q$^2$ using a newly commissioned proton Focal Plane Polarimeter at the M.I.T.-Bates Linear Accelerator Center. The hydrogen and deuterium spin-dependent observables $D_{\ell\ell}$ and $D_{{\ell}t}$, the induced polarization $P_n$ and the form factor ratio $G^p_E/G^p_M$ were measured under identical kinematics. The deuterium and hydrogen results are in good agreement with each other and with the plane-wave impulse approximation (PWIA).

Measurement of the Induced Proton Polarization P_n in the 12C(e,e'\vec{p}) Reaction

The first measurements of the induced proton polarization, P_n, for the 12C (e,e'\vec{p}) reaction are reported. The experiment was performed at quasifree kinematics for energy and momentum transfer (ω,q) \approx (294 MeV, 756 MeV/c) and sampled a recoil momentum range of 0-250 MeV/c. The induced polarization arises from final-state interactions and for these kinematics is dominated by the real part of the spin-orbit optical potential. The distorted-wave impulse approximation provides good agreement with data for the 1p_{3/2} shell. The data for the continuum suggest that both the 1s_{1/2} shell and underlying l > 1 configurations contribute.
