Strange baryon resonance production in $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV $p+p$ and $Au+Au$ collisions

We report the measurements of $Σ(1385)$ and $Λ(1520)$ production in $p+p$ and $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV from the STAR collaboration. The yields and the $p_{T}$ spectra are presented and discussed in terms of chemical and thermal freeze-out conditions and compared to model predictions. Thermal and microscopic models do not adequately describe the yields of all the resonances produced in central $Au+Au$ collisions. Our results indicate that there may be a time-span between chemical and thermal freeze-out during which elastic hadronic interactions occur.

Low temperature synthesis, magnetic and magnetotransport properties of (La1-xLux)0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (0 < x < 0.12) system

We have been able to synthesize Lu+3 substituted La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO) by an auto-combustion method. Synthesis of this compound is not successful by conventional ceramic or other chemical methods. Magnetic and electrical transport properties of the Lu substituted LCMO [(La1-xLux)0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (0 < x < 0.12)] system have been investigated and compared with those of the Y+3, Pr+3, Dy+3 and Tb+3 substituted LCMO systems. All the compounds show a ferromagnetic metal to paramagnetic insulator transition at TC. The tolerance factor reduces from 0.917 for x = 0 to 0.909 for x = 0.12 and for this range all are ferromagnetic metals indicating the dominance of the coupling between spins due to double exchange over the antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction. The transition temperatures and magnetization decrease as the Lu concentration increases. This is satisfactorily accounted for on the basis of transition from ferromagnetic at x = 0 to canted spin order for x > 0. All the samples show higher magnitude of MR compared to that in pure LCMO at 80 kOe field in the temperature range of 5 to 320K. A fairly high value of low field magnetoresistance (LFMR) of about 30% is obtained in all the samples at a field less than 5 kOe.

Cutoff in the TeV Energy Spectrum of Markarian 421 During Strong Flares in 2001

Exceptionally strong and long lasting flaring activity of the blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) occurred between January and March 2001. Based on the excellent signal-to-noise ratio of the data we derive the energy spectrum between 260 GeV - 17 TeV with unprecedented statistical precision. The spectrum is not well described by a simple power law even with a curvature term. Instead the data can be described by a power law with exponential cutoff: $\rm {{dN}\over{dE}} \propto \rm E^{-2.14 \pm 0.03_{stat}} \times e^{-E/E_{0}} m^{-2} s^{-1} TeV^{-1}$ with $\rm E_{0} = 4.3 \pm 0.3_{stat} TeV$. Mrk 421 is the second $γ$-ray blazar that unambiguously exhibits an absorption-like feature in its spectral energy distribution at 3-6 TeV suggesting that this may be a universal phenomenon, possibly due to the extragalactic infra-red background radiation.

The Bose Metal: gauge field fluctuations and scaling for field tuned quantum phase transitions

In this paper, we extend our previous discussion of the Bose metal to the field tuned case. We point out that the recent observation of the metallic state as an intermediate phase between the superconductor and the insulator in the field tuned experiments on MoGe films is in perfect consistency with the Bose metal scenario. We establish a connection between general dissipation models and gauge field fluctuations and apply this to a discussion of scaling across the quantum phase boundaries of the Bose metallic state. Interestingly, we find that the Bose metal scenario implies a possible {\em two} parameter scaling for resistivity across the Bose metal-insulator transition, which is remarkably consistent with the MoGe data. Scaling at the superconductor-metal transition is also proposed, and a phenomenolgical model for the metallic state is discussed. The effective action of the Bose metal state is described and its low energy excitation spectrum is found to be $ω\propto k^{3}$.

On the existence of a Bose Metal at T=0

This paper aims to justify, at a microscopic level, the existence of a two-dimensional Bose metal, i.e. a metallic phase made out of Cooper pairs at T=0. To this end, we consider the physics of quantum phase fluctuations in (granular) superconductors in the absence of disorder and emphasise the role of two order parameters in the problem, viz. phase order and charge order. We focus on the 2-d Bose Hubbard model in the limit of very large fillings, i.e. a 2-d array of Josephson junctions. We find that the algebra of phase fluctuations is that of the Euclidean group $E_{2}$ in this limit, and show that the model is equivalent to two coupled XY models in (2+1)-d, one corresponding to the phase degrees of freedom, and the other the charge degrees of freedom. The Bose metal, then, is the phase in which both these degrees of freedom are disordered(as a result of quantum frustration). We analyse the model in terms of its topological excitations and suggest that there is a strong indication that this state represents a surface of critical points, akin to the gapless spin liquid states. We find a remarkable consistency of this scenario with certain low-T_c thin film experiments.

Weakly localised bosons

In this paper, we argue that, in 2-d, the weak localisation of bosons, which occurs on the insulating side of the superconductor-insulator transition, is characterised by $ρ\sim ln(1/T)$, as compared to $σ\sim lnT$ for fermions. Such an unconventional behaviour is tied to the diffusion pole of the delocalised (uncondensed) vortices.
