Weak localization of light in hot atomic vapors

We theoretically explore the possibility to detect weak localization of light in a hot atomic vapor, where one usually expects the fast thermal motion of the atoms to destroy any interference in multiple scattering. To this end, we compute the coherent backscattering peak, assuming high temperature and taking into account the quantum level structure of the atomic scatterers. It is found that the decoherence due to thermal motion can be partially counterbalanced by working at large laser detuning and using small atomic cells with an elongated geometry. Under these conditions, our estimates suggest that weak localization in a hot vapor should be within reach of experimental detection.

Quantum boomerang effect: beyond the standard Anderson model

It was recently shown that wavepackets with skewed momentum distribution exhibit a boomerang-like dynamics in the Anderson model due to Anderson localization: after an initial ballistic motion, they make a U-turn and eventually come back to their starting point. In this paper, we study the robustness of the quantum boomerang effect in various kinds of disordered and dynamical systems: tight-binding models with pseudo-random potentials, systems with band random Hamiltonians, and the kicked rotor. Our results show that the boomerang effect persists in models with pseudo-random potentials. It is also present in the kicked rotor, although in this case with a specific dependency on the initial state. On the other hand, we find that random hopping processes inhibit any drift motion of the wavepacket, and consequently the boomerang effect. In particular, if the random nearest-neighbor hopping amplitudes have zero average, the wavepacket remains in its initial position.

Resonant-light diffusion in a disordered atomic layer

Light scattering in dense media is a fundamental problem of many-body physics, which is also relevant for the development of optical devices. In this work we investigate experimentally light propagation in a dense sample of randomly positioned resonant scatterers confined in a layer of sub-wavelength thickness. We locally illuminate the atomic cloud and monitor spatially-resolved fluorescence away from the excitation region. We show that light spreading is well described by a diffusion process, involving many scattering events in the dense regime. For light detuned from resonance we find evidence that the atomic layer behaves as a graded-index planar waveguide. These features are reproduced by a simple geometrical model and numerical simulations of coupled dipoles.

Postquench prethermalization in a disordered quantum fluid of light

We study the coherence of a disordered and interacting quantum light field after propagation along a nonlinear optical fiber. Disorder is generated by a cross-phase modulation with a randomized auxiliary classical light field, while interactions are induced by self-phase modulation. When penetrating the fiber from free space, the incoming quantum light undergoes a disorder and interaction quench. By calculating the coherence function of the transmitted quantum light, we show that the decoherence induced by the quench spreads in a light-cone fashion in the nonequilibrium many-body quantum system, leaving the latter prethermalize with peculiar features originating from disorder.

Cooperative emission of a pulse train in an optically thick scattering medium

An optically thick cold atomic cloud emits a coherent flash of light in the forward direction when the phase of an incident probe field is abruptly changed. Because of cooperativity, the duration of this phenomena can be much shorter than the excited lifetime of a single atom. Repeating periodically the abrupt phase jump, we generate a train of pulses with short repetition time, high intensity contrast and high efficiency. In this regime, the emission is fully governed by cooperativity even if the cloud is dilute.

Cooperative Emission of a Coherent Superflash of Light

We investigate the transient coherent transmission of light through an optically thick cold stron-tium gas. We observe a coherent superflash just after an abrupt probe extinction, with peak intensity more than three times the incident one. We show that this coherent superflash is a direct signature of the cooperative forward emission of the atoms. By engineering fast transient phenomena on the incident field, we give a clear and simple picture of the physical mechanisms at play.

Coherent forward scattering in 2D disordered systems

We present a detailed numerical and theoretical analysis of the recently discovered phenomenon of coherent forward scattering. This effect manifests itself as a macroscopic interference peak in the forward direction of the momentum distribution of a matter wave launched with finite velocity in a random potential. Focusing on the two-dimensional case, we show that coherent forward scattering generally arises due the confinement of the wave in a finite region of space, and explain under which conditions it can be seen as a genuine signature of Anderson localization.

Extracting information from non adiabatic dynamics: excited symmetric states of the Bose-Hubbard model

Using Fourier transform on a time series generated by unitary evolution, we extract many-body eigenstates of the Bose-Hubbard model corresponding to low energy excitations, which are generated when the insulator-superfluid phase transition is realized in a typical experiment. The analysis is conducted in a symmetric external potential both without and with and disorder. A simple classification of excitations in the absence disorder is provided. The evolution is performed assuming the presence of the parity symmetry in the system rendering many-body quantum states either symmetric or antisymmetric. Using symmetry-breaking technique, those states are decomposed into elementary one-particle processes.

Universality of the Anderson transition with the quasiperiodic kicked rotor

We report a numerical analysis of the Anderson transition in a quantum-chaotic system, the quasiperiodic kicked rotor with three incommensurate frequencies. It is shown that this dynamical system exhibits the same critical phenomena as the truly random 3D-Anderson model. By taking proper account of systematic corrections to one-parameter scaling, the universality of the critical exponent is demonstrated. Our result $ν= 1.59 \pm 0.01$ is in perfect agreement with the value found for the Anderson model.

Quantum bright soliton in a disorder potential

At very low temperature, a quasi-one-dimensional ensemble of atoms with attractive interactions tend to form a bright soliton. When exposed to a sufficiently weak external potential, the shape of the soliton is not modified, but its external motion is affected. We develop in detail the Bogoliubov approach for the problem, treating, in a non-perturbative way, the motion of the center of mass of the soliton. Quantization of this motion allows us to discuss its long time properties. In particular, in the presence of a disordered potential, the quantum motion of the center of mass of a bright soliton may exhibit Anderson localization, on a localization length which may be much larger than the soliton size and could be observed experimentally.

Quantum Diffusion of Matter Waves in 2D Speckle Potentials

This paper investigates quantum diffusion of matter waves in two-dimensional random potentials, focussing on expanding Bose-Einstein condensates in spatially correlated optical speckle potentials. Special care is taken to describe the effect of dephasing, finite system size, and an initial momentum distribution. We derive general expressions for the interference-renormalized diffusion constant, the disorder-averaged probability density distribution, the variance of the expanding atomic cloud, and the localized fraction of atoms. These quantities are studied in detail for the special case of an inverted-parabola momentum distribution as obtained from an expanding condensate in the Thomas-Fermi regime. Lastly, we derive quantitative criteria for the unambiguous observation of localization effects in a possible 2D experiment.

Coherent Matter Wave Transport in Speckle Potentials

This article studies multiple scattering of matter waves by a disordered optical potential in two and in three dimensions. We calculate fundamental transport quantities such as the scattering mean free path $\ell_s$, the Boltzmann transport mean free path $\elltrb$, and the Boltzmann diffusion constant $D_B$, using a diagrammatic Green functions approach. Coherent multiple scattering induces interference corrections known as weak localization which entail a reduced diffusion constant. We derive the corresponding expressions for matter wave transport in an correlated speckle potential and provide the relevant parameter values for a possible experimental study of this coherent transport regime, including the critical crossover to the regime of strong or Anderson localization.

Comment on ``Intensity correlations and mesoscopic fluctuations of diffusing photons in cold atoms''

In a recent Letter (Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{98}, 083601 (2007), arXiv:cond-mat/0610804), O. Assaf and E. Akkermans claim that the angular correlations of the light intensity scattered by a cloud of cold atoms with internal degeneracy (Zeeman sublevels) of the ground state overcome the usual Rayleigh law. More precisely, they found that they become exponentially large with the size of the sample. In what follows, we will explain why their results are wrong and, in contrary, why the internal degeneracy leads to lower intensity correlations.

Localization of Matter Waves in 2D-Disordered Optical Potentials

We consider ultracold atoms in 2D-disordered optical potentials and calculate microscopic quantities characterizing matter wave quantum transport in the non-interacting regime. We derive the diffusion constant as function of all relevant microscopic parameters and show that coherent multiple scattering induces significant weak localization effects. In particular, we find that even the strong localization regime is accessible with current experimental techniques and calculate the corresponding localization length.

Coherent Backscattering with Nonlinear Atomic Scatterers

We study coherent backscattering of a quasi-monochromatic laser by a dilute gas of cold two-level atoms. We consider the perturbative regime of weak intensities, where nonlinear effects arise from {\em inelastic} two-photon scattering processes. Here, coherent backscattering can be formed by interference between {\em three} different scattering amplitudes. Consequently, if elastically scattered photons are filtered out from the photodetection signal by means of suitable frequency-selective detection, we find the nonlinear backscattering enhancement factor to exceed the linear barrier two.

Coherent backscattering of light by atoms in the saturated regime

We present the first calculation of coherent backscattering with inelastic scattering by saturated atoms. We consider the scattering of a quasi-monochromatic laser pulse by two distant atoms in free space. By restricting ourselves to scattering of two photons, we employ a perturbative approach, valid up to second order in the incident laser intensity. The backscattering enhancement factor is found to be smaller than two (after excluding single scattering), indicating a loss of coherence between the doubly scattered light emitted by both atoms. Since the undetected photon carries information about the path of the detected photon, the coherence loss can be explained by a which-path argument, in analogy with a double-slit experiment.

Quantum three body Coulomb problem in two dimensions

We study the three-body Coulomb problem in two dimensions and show how to calculate very accurately its quantum properties. The use of a convenient set of coordinates makes it possible to write the Schrödinger equation only using annihilation and creation operators of four harmonic oscillators, coupled by various terms of degree up to twelve. We analyse in details the discrete symmetry properties of the eigenstates. The energy levels and eigenstates of the two-dimensional helium atom are obtained numerically, by expanding the Schrödinger equation on a convenient basis set, that gives sparse banded matrices, and thus opens up the way to accurate and efficient calculations. We give some very accurate values of the energy levels of the first bound Rydberg series. Using the complex coordinate method, we are also able to calculate energies and widths of doubly excited states, i.e. resonances above the first ionization threshold. For the two-dimensional $H^{-}$ ion, only one bound state is found.

Hanle effect in coherent backscattering

We study the shape of the coherent backscattering (CBS) cone obtained when resonant light illuminates a thick cloud of laser-cooled rubidium atoms in presence of a homogenous magnetic field. We observe new magnetic field-dependent anisotropies in the CBS signal. We show that the observed behavior is due to the modification of the atomic radiation pattern by the magnetic field (Hanle effect in the excited state).
